Henry and Elizabeth Goddard lived in a beautiful castle overlooking the sea. Elizabeth and Henry were so in love with each other. They were inseparable, they always did things together. It seemed they had it all, until one day when Henry's maid came into his study and locked the door behind her.
Catherine was her name and she had the most beautiful blue eyes and blonde hair on any woman around. Catherine had her eyes on Henry for quite some time. She couldn't control her feelings anymore and decided now was the time. Catherine approached the back of Henry's chair and put her hands on his shoulders, squeezing them ever so lightly. Catherine's touch would make any man's heart melt. She said, "Henry, you need to relax more often and not be so absorbed in your work. I can give you what you need anytime you want." Catherine bent over and blew in his ear and whispered, "Henry you know you need me as much as I need you," said Catherine. Lust and betrayal led to murder and an undead surprise.

Knock It Off
Despite what you might think, âKnock Three Times on My Graveâ is not a hitherto undiscovered new lyric to the hit Tony Orlando pop song. Instead, itâs a flash fiction story by Drac Von Stoller thatâs supposed to be scary. Unfortunately, the scariest thing associated with reading the story is that readers will start thinking about the Tony Orlando song theyâd tried to forget for years.
âKnock Three Timesâ is only seven pages long, so, needless to say, there isnât much room for plot subtleties or character development. A woman named Elizabeth Goddard discovers that her husband Henry has been cheating on her with the maid, so she poisons both Henry and the maid. For some strange reason, Henry doesnât bear a grudge and, instead, offers to give Elizabeth a supernatural helping hand in the future is she follows the advice in the storyâs title. For some even stranger reason, Elizabeth takes up with an abusive jerk named Harry and finds out that she needs Henryâs help sooner than she anticipated.
Flash horror fiction requires a deft touch, because the author has to establish the right tone and atmosphere for the story in, at best, a couple of pages. However, Von Stollerâs writing style is extremely wooden, so much so, I half suspected the author wasnât accustomed to using the English language. Whatever creepiness and sense of foreboding a good author might have instilled in a story like âKnock Three Timesâ is completely dissipated. Instead of wrestling with a sense of dread, readers wrestle with passages like âHenry would breathe his last breath in about twenty minutes later. Henry said, âWhy did you poison us?â said an angry Henry.â
When the grand finale does arrive, itâs over disappointingly quickly and without any sort of twist that might partially redeem the story. However, the story itself doesnât end there, as the author drags it out for another page for some unknown reason. Itâs hard to believe a seven-page story could be tiring, but âKnock Three Times on My Graveâ is a bit of a grind to sit (or read) through.
âKnock Three Times on My Graveâ is an example of the type of horror known as a campfire story, one told by Boy Scouts late at night in the woods.
