I Loved This Book!!

My Truly Wonderful brother-In-law was a firefighter. When he was diagnosed with cancer I watched his brother and sister firefighters form a silent net of support around him and his family. A casual comment about firewood resulted in three firefighters, chopping and delivering a cord of firewood the next day. This was just one tiny example of the many ways they rallied around the family.... It made a powerful impression on my because the firewood comment was so fleeting and unimportant in the dinner spent with one of the firefighters and his wife. It was like they watched carefully for any way they could help, and we're so connected to the whole family that they filled needs before a request was ever voiced.

Kathryn Shay' captures the heroism, hard work, pride, and this powerful brotherhood bond perfectly. I was sorry to close the book and leave behind these people who had made such an impact.

I am seriously thinking about baking some cookies for the firefighters who protect my neighborhood!!! And I will definitely be reading more of Kathryn Shay!!'

The narrator wrecked the whole book.

I really like the first book but who picked this narrator made a big mistake. But even the book was boring. I had to fast forward just to try and get through the book. I hate it when they have a series and then change the reader. I don't know if I want to download book 3 since I was so disappointed in book 2.

3.5 DISAPPOINTED STARS - I HATE TO SAY IT BUT....

After the success of book 1 in the series I was expecting something equally as good from this second instalment and, whilst it was an ok listen, it unfortunately lacked so much that book 1 had... such as sizzling chemistry, humor, friendship and hot sex scenes. As 18 yr old runaway bride Aylen hides from her Father (and the religious sect) with sexy Lead Guitarist Carter and they slowly journey home her naivety, constant refererring to her total lack of knowledge of life and her flashbacks got very repetitive.

Don't get me wrong, this book was fairly enjoyable, and necessary if you intend to follow the series, but it was much slower than book 1, it lacked the humor, lacked the great chemistry the rest of the band have with each other, lacked passionate hot sex scenes and lacked any updates to Rebecca and Kent's love life... in fact when they were briefly mentioned Kent came across as cold.

Yes! This book is a winner! Romance, intrigue, mystery, suspense. I liked all of the series so far, but this was the best!

There is a glaring error, however. Matthew 28:46 was quoted, but the correct passage is Matthew 27:46.

Not as good as first two volumes

The first story was okay, and these books are generally a lot of fun to read. The author really cares about her characters, and she is able to make the reader care about them. Despite the fact that the male and female protagonists behave like really immature 12 year olds, the books are a nice read when you need escapism and entertainment and they won't tax your brain much. The plots are always waving away at you, and if you can't figure them out from the first chapter or two, you aren't paying attention. That being said, I really didn't like Lone Star Baby much. I made it half way through before throwing the book across the room. It's a given that the denizens of Promise are an interfering bunch of gossiping but affectionate goody two shoes, but they really pulled out all the stops on this one. I found it totally unbelievable that the good citizens were determined to make a match between the genial, hapless pastor and the unwed mother. It just wouldn't and couldn't happen. Most of her stories read like fairy tales, but this one read like a joke. I found myself disliking the characters a lot when I actually read the story. Before I started, I was amused by the concept, but the execution left a lot to be desired. This could have been much better than it was, but it was poorly written, a real disappointment. Forester once said that for fiction to succeed, it required a willing suspension of disbelief. With all the will in the world I couldn't muster up even a shred of belief in this silly and childish story. With a better writer, or better writing, the story could have succeeded. Instead, it came off as juvenile and tasteless. I enjoy the Cedar Cove stories, and find that the characters, even with all their faults, are more believable than these sweet but clueless frauds. It is a given that Debbie's fans don't expect great literature, but we do expect not to be insulted with silliness at every turn.

As always a great love story...

Those of us who read - and keep reading - Debbie Macomber novels usually know from the beginning how they will end.

It's the twists and turns along the way and the way she makes us feel we know these people that keeps us reading.

The Story:

I previously read this story as an ebook and part of "The Plus One Chronicle" Boxed Set. So last time I got the whole story at one. This however is just the first part and does an awesome job of whetting your appetite. In this installment we meet Kat and Sloan.

Kat is the daughter of a rich and well educated family. They tend to look down on her because she doesn't follow the family dream of working at their drug company and creating new medicines. Instead she would rather own and work at her bakery. They are also extremely protective of her after she was involved in a mugging gone wrong 5 yrs ago leaving her with a bum leg and incomplete memories of the attack.

Sloan is an ex UFC fighter turned billionaire from his chain of SLAM fitness gyms. He doesn't do relationships he does "Plus One" agreements. So he propositions Kat. With her agreement to be his plus one at his many business functions and of course sex on the side he will teach her to defend herself.

Kat wants nothing more than to become a stronger person able to stand on her own two feet so this appeals to her. Then she starts having snippets of flashbacks from her mugging which brings her ex boyfriends involvement into question, but SLoan can't help but be there to protect her.

The Narration:

Ok all I can say about the narration is Mr Hudson has one dreamy voice! I wasn't sure if I would like him with so much of the story being in Kat's voice but he did a great job with her, and when he was talking for Sloan I just wanted to melt !!

My Thoughts:

I really loved this audio book. I liked the story to begin with after reading it previously but adding the narration just heightens the enjoyment !!

Great read

This book draws you into to both Kat and Sloan so completely. You will find yourself waiting to read the entire series to find out happens next to these two "broken" souls

Just The First Installment

This is just the first part of a serial. Its delicious and like an appetizer but you're going to want the full meal. So be ready to purchase the next audiobook. Sloan and Kat are a sexy couple, and the narration only highlights that. I recommend this series on audio. It's a delicious listen.

Still interested, but a bit disappointed

This one isn't as light hearted as the other two-a beloved character passes away and others from the previous books are rarely seen. I didn't like the way two characters developed. Tom Armstrong goes from a guilt ridden, concerned older brother to a bully and Helen's mother is suddenly a protective loving mother after her history is reveled while for two books and a half books she has been a cold, cruel, manipulate and overbearing witch. I don't like it when characters make such a drastic change. I'm still going to listen to the next one though-

What made the experience of listening to The Nightingale Nurses the most enjoyable?

The story was addictive as I followed each nurse as they not only dealt with life on the wards but also their personal lives had me gripped. This is the third book in this fantastic series and the nurses who we met in the first book are coming to the end of their training it was thrilling to learn about what life was like back then for not only the nurses on the wards but the many different treatments which they firmly believed in along with the hero worshipping of the doctors was so fascinating and totally unbelievable.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dora was my favourite as she had so much to deal with at home, my heart ached for her - yet her love for being a nurse kept her going as she deals with the Sisters who ran the wards yet she would have done anything to ease a patient's pain.

What about Penelope Freemans performance did you like?

Penelope Freeman is now one of my favourite narrator - I could sit and listen to her narrating the phone book as with her vivid ear for accents and characters she acted out she separate character by changing her tone of voice and she did it so well I felt she did so well I was sitting on the side-lines watching a play taking place.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Thrilling yet heart-wrenching throughout...

I loved this series of books in audio, and even though I have previously read the series the audio opened up this series in a new and very engaging way.

Well written and an engaging story

I found the nightingale stories really addictive to listen too. Donna Douglas writes really well and the narration by Penelope Freeman is the best I ever listened to.

Not worth the money

When I purchased this I thought this would be an action/romance; however, What I discovered is that the author spends to much time describing the feelings of the characters and that, in turn, makes the story move entirely too slow. The reader gets that the primary female character has overcome severe trauma and that she doesn't function well from a physical or emotional standpoint. No need to keep repeating it over and over and over.

The narrator is not that great either.

When the first few chapters produced no action, I finally stopped listening - probably one of three books on which I have really wasted my money.

Awesome end to trilogy!

This audiobook gives us the story of Mike and Chloe (who is really Harry Bolts sister Chrissy). I loved this series so much! The writing is wonderful and characters are ones you don't forget. The romance relationship that developed is stymied by Harry's interference and Mike's past reputation. Love wins out in the end and narration was very well performed.

Yes to anyone interested in a little bit of suspense, a little bit of romance and a little bit of violence.

Still going strong...

ORIGINAL REVIEW: 4.5 stars -- AHHHHHH!!!! SON OF A *****! Another cliffhanger. The books in this series are getting better and better. This one was fabulous. Not only did you get some happiness with Mari and Trystan, but so much happened in such a small book. And that ending. GAH! I need the next book, and I sincerely hope there aren't many more, b/c I need closure now now NOW! Anyways, yeah. I really liked that they both have abusive situations at home...I think so many people, including those in the situations, downplay mental/emotional abuse...and Mari is no different. It's kind of nice to see that being addressed. OK, I am somewhat disappointed that I read these now not knowing the series wasn't complete, but I will get over it....someday....I need to start finding *completed* series....

ON REREAD: 4 stars -- I wasn't quite as enamoured as last time apparently. I LOVED that we got to see Mari and Trystan come together, but I was disappointed in the Brie stuff...it felt kind of weird. But I'm still really enjoying watching the two of them navigate their relationship, and holy wow did things escalate at the end!

Loving this young adult series!

I'm definitely hooked! Your really find out what a piece of s**t Trystan's father is in this story and just how physically abusive he is to Trystan. Trystan is the popular guy in school and feels like he has this image to uphold even though his life is falling down around him. Trystan and Mari keep their relationship secret. Also in this story Trystan and Mari form a tighter bond and discover that they're home lives really aren't that different from each other - Trystan is physically abused by his father while Mari's parents verbally abuse her and steal her self-worth. There is still a secret that Trystan is keeping from everyone except Mari and by revealing this secret to the world, it could change his life dramatically. Story is too short - boo - and also ends in a major cliffy!

Mari finally knows that Tristan is in love with her

3.5 stars rounded up to 4

Finally, things are starting to pick up! Mari finally knows that Tristan is in love with her, and (spoiler) she finally admits that she loves him, too. This leads to a book that is much more enjoyable to read than the previous two. The back and forth is gone, and we get to see their relationship start to develop.

Where does Conflicting Hearts rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

One of the best books I've had the privilege to read. I highly recommend this book to any and all listeners. Some scenes may have a triggering effect, so readers beware. But, it's written tastefully, and the narration is wonderful.

What did you like best about this story?

The rawness and honesty from where the story is told. It's a true eye-opener.

Which character as performed by Andi Arndt was your favorite?

Rachel and I are polar opposites in relation to coping with our past abuse. We are both wired wrong, and struggling to find normal.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I listened to the audio version of this fantastic novel, as that's the format I prefer when I'm busy. I figured I would listen a little each day during some free moments. That didn't happen! I couldn't put it down and listened to the entire book in one day!

A fender-bender on the road, brings Rachel (an administrative assistant) and Ian (a promininant attorney) together by accident. Ian persues a relationship with the very reluctant Rachel, and finally succeeds in winning her trust. But when they attempt to consummate their relationship, he finds that loving her may not be enough to overcome her dark and haunting secrets. Yes...she is broken, but not ruined. The ensuing struggle to make this relationship work, not only awakened memories and nightmares from my own past, but it also touched my soul.

I never expected such a poignant and indepth journey into the mind and soul of a sexual abuse victim. This author captures the essence and nuances of a taboo subject, yet weaves them into a beautiful, gripping story of love, hope, pain, and rebirth, that stays with you long after you've finished the book. I had to ponder and digest my overwhelming and raw feelings for a few days, before I could write this review. The author brings to the forefront, a view of the damage left behind by a child abuser; the struggle to overcome, and the fight to be normal...whatever that is.

Bo & Morgan

Bo has been happy with his single lifestyle and had no reason to change. Until a quite, devastated Ella. He must now face life altering decisions for himself and young Ella. Morgan's life plan shattered and feels only a drastic change will help her cope. She must decide is she is willing and able to help Bo and Ella recover and make future plans. I love Morgan and her resilience but am irritated at her initial judgement against Bo.

Morgan is looking for an escape after some devastating news. She was hired at Castle Mountain Lodge to be the decorator for events of all kinds, but mostly weddings.

When she gets there she finds that she has been reassigned to lead the child activities section. The manager came to this decision because of Morgan's extensive resume a degree in child development and career working with children. Morgan wants nothing to do with it, she enjoys the focus on details that an event planner/decorator can work through in a methodical, mindless way.

Bo, Castle Mountain Lodge's mountain guide, has just discovered that he is a father to a young girl he never knew about, until her mother's untimely death. Known as the resident heartthrob and player at the lodge has no idea if he even wants to take on the responsibility of becoming a father.

Caught in the middle is this beautiful little girl who steals both of their hearts.

Notes: There is constant, subliminal sexual tension, however other than that this is a well-written, innocent book. (I didn't mind.)

Sweet romance!!

This is another super sweet romance in the series. Things are mostly light and fluffy between the two characters. They each have something deep to deal with and work out.
