My Thoughts:

I have to say, I really didn't know what to expect when I first picked up Wrong Side of the Grave. The synopsis really left me interested, but I didn't quite know where to place it in my head. It's definitely not something I'd ever read before, but I couldn't wait to take the plunge. What did I think? Well, it's complicated.

I guess I should start out by saying that I love paranormal, but I'm not the biggest sci-fi fan. When the genres cross paths, I've seldom seen good results. Thankfully, to my surprise, Butler pulled it off pretty well. You see, I love vampires. They're among my favorite of all paranormal creatures, but I'd never quite seen anything like what Butler has done to the trope. Vampires depicted as otherworldly beings? Now that's a twist.

This being said, I'm not entirely sure the vampire aspect was quite what I was looking for. Butler did a great job with the world building in this novel. Keeps the mysterious, yet historical setting for the novel at an incredible pace, giving readers just enough to keep them reading, but not spoiling any surprises until the very end. This is were the vampire-aspect of the characters gets a bit odd. In all actuality, I don't see why it was important for the characters in question to be vampires, because in the end, the fact that they are actually aliens is what drives the story. When it comes to vampires, you really have to hit the historical aspect pretty hard on the head (in most instances), but, aside from one scene, this one fell flat on the vampire-trope for me.

Now that doesn't mean I didn't fall hard for the story, just don't go in expecting your standard run-of-the-mill vampire novel, because you will be disappointed,

Now, the alien, other-worldly aspect of Wrong Side of the Grave? Butler killed it. Seriously. Alien technology, secret government agencies, hidden spaceships: what's not to like? As I mentioned before, I'm generally not a sci-fi fan, but Butler did a great job capturing my attention from the very beginning.

Now that we've covered the genre aspect of the novel, let's talk about the story.

I have to say that I found the plot of WSotG to be very original.

Anyone can be a superhero, even the ones who donât have hearts...

I met with writer Nick Courage on Thursday, April 9th, to chat with him about his first novel, The Loudness. It is a comingÂofÂage novel that is set in the future, after a series of destructive natural disasters, called The Tragedies. The main character, Henry Long, is bored in his quiet little town of the Green Zone, one of the few habitable areas left. He hopes to have a little excitement in his heart for once. That is, if he had a heart. His is artificial. Henryâs wish becomes a reality when he visits the Other Side, a community where Henry feels truly happy. But nothing really lasts for long. When his father and mother, the acting mayor of the Green Zone, are kidnapped on their trip to The City, he is thrust into a world he isnât ready for. As he travels to save his parents, he finds out more about the issues around him, and that anyone can be a superhero, even the ones who donât have hearts.

I first asked Nick (He said I could call him Nick) about âthe loudnessâ, asking if it is a literal, tangible thing? A metaphor for something bigger? He told me that there were a few scenes in the book where Henry blacked out, and that it was pretty fun to write those scenes. He also liked writing things with multiple ways to be interpreted. He said it was like âdescribing the indescribable.â Nick said readers should think of it how they wantÂÂÂ thereâs no wrong answer.

I began my next question by stating a simple one regarding a female character with many names: âWhich one is it: Ava, Evelyn, or Freckles?â He laughed and said, âIâm happy you decided to start that question that way! Ultimately, itâs Ava. Ava is Henryâs âgirlfriend.ââ Itâs hard to be in love when everything around you is falling apart. My followÂ-up question was, âHow do you think Ava/Evelyn/Freckles relationship with Henry changes how he looks at himself and the world around him?â Nick thought it was funny that, for about half the book, Henry didnât even know what her real name was, even though they were together so much! It was also very empowering to Henry to have someone who cared about him so much.

An Atmospheric YA Contemporary Fantasy

SERIES INFO: This is Book #1 of 2.5 (so far) in the Flora Series. According to the author, the final novella (#2.5) & book (#3) will likely be released in 2017. The audiobook for #2, Open Thy Heart, has been delayed; but she hopes to release it in late spring. And she is in the process of searching for the *perfect* narrator for #1.5 By Sun and Candlelight.

CHARACTERS:

Dahlia: She seems like someone I would have enjoyed hanging out with in high school. Bookish, with just a few close friends.

Rowan: I like that he is careful about proprieties and mindful of the age difference. So many YA heroes arent anyone I would want my daughter (if I had one) to be interested in. BUT, his constant mysteriousness was very frustrating (although we learn the reasons for it later on).

Dahlia & Rowan: The main thing that kept this from being a 4* book was that there was too much tell and not enough show for their relationship. We are basically told that it is developing over time, as they meet & have great conversations; but we rarely get to hear those conversations for ourselves. We get lots of dialogue in the scenes with David, but skip over all but a few highlights of Dahlia & Rowans courtship. I would have like to spend more time with them, as they were getting to know one another. It might also have helped balance out the fact that he was careful to never talk about anything significant in his own life.

Dahlia & David: Oh man, I feel for you Dahlia. I have been in your exact situation with a long time friend, and it isnt any fun. / I appreciate that she compares David liking her to her liking Rowan, and is able to be compassionate.

WORLDBUILDING:

Her descriptions are especially good. Listen carefully when she first explains her "dreams." It is a verbal "map" to the land. I want to visit the beach, especially at night; a gorgeous guy as a companion would be plus too.

STORY:

As I said above, I found the extended "mysteriousness" of everything a bit frustrating. Once things started being explained, the story really got going and became more action packed. I think we could have gotten to the action sooner if we had spent less time in the daytime world. The ending definitely leaves everything hanging. (I don't want to say a lot more, lest I ruin the mystery)

NARRATION:

Note: there are some volume changes (e.g. when a character shrieks)

Pros: Her voice was very age appropriate / Good emoting w/o being overdramatic / Good speed. I actually listened on regular speed, rather than my usual 1.25.

Cons: Rowans voice took a little while to get into.

Monstrously good read!

Not as captivating as the first thrill ride but still a very good book. I hope we will see more of boy in the future. Recommend this and the first book to anyone that loves their monsters !

I recommend reading the first book in the series

I got this book not too long ago at my library and can't wait to own it. I recommend reading the first book in the series, you know, first (I only say this because I didn't), but I can say both "Man Made Boy" and "This Broken Wondrous World" are well-written, captivating, and can stand by themselves plot-wise without too much you have to remember to enjoy the sequel.

strong three, more than satisfying conclusion to series

Hour of Need is the concluding book in Michael Pryor's Laws of Magic's series and it brings a good series to a fitting and satisfying close. I won't bother recapping the general premise as you'll want to have read the prior (or should that be Pryor) books first so you can check out the setting etc. in my earlier reviews. Suffice to say it's set in an alternate Edwardian time period that has been moving toward and then finally arriving at their version of World War I involving both technology and magic.

All the major characters return for Hour of Need: Aubrey--whom I've described as a mix of Holmes, Tow Swift, and Hermione Granger; his best friend George--reliably strong and warm-hearted; Caroline--his crack shot, martial artist maybe-finally-girlfriend-this-book; and Sophie, coming into her own magically in this book as well as moving more seriously into her relationship with George. As one might expect in the conclusion, the villain--Dr. Tremaine--is here as well, and yes, he and Aubrey do have a final confrontation.

The book is darker that the earlier ones in the sense that while the first few were heading into the war and the last one has the group fighting at the fringes, here we see the actual front and it has all the horror as the non-alternate-universe WWI--the trenches, wire fencing, shell-shocked soldiers, are all here and it makes for a nice raising of the stakes as well as some strong, affecting imagery.

The grim nature and darker imagery in the middle section strengthen the book, as does the continued development of the relationship among the characters and the movement toward an awareness of the horror of war no matter which side (that isn't to say Pryor offers up any moral relativism here; he simply doesn't shy away from the sometimes monstrous things being done).

Hour of Need `s flaws will be familiar to readers of the series--though they are presented as difficult, it still feels that things come a bit too easily or quickly to Aubrey and that's true as well for Sophia, whose magic skills are moving perhaps a bit too fast. Though Pryor still does an excellent job in the presentation of the magic itself as a kind of science in its intellectual rigor. Tremaine remains a bit too abstract, the confrontation is a bit perfunctory, and this book, like others, could have lost 50-75 pages or so.

But overall, as mentioned, it's a fitting and satisfactory conclusion. I've called the series "charmingly old-fashioned" and it remains so to the end. Too old-fashioned for some I've no doubt, but personally I found it to be one of the series' greatest strengths and, to be fully honest, a bit of a relief amidst all the "gritty" or dystopic YA fiction.

Das Buch hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Die Sprecherin war super ausgewählt, ihre Stimme passt super dazu.

Ich freue mich schon auf das zweite Buch und bin gespannt auf den Film.

Abenteuer,Liebe, Zeitreisen...dazu liebevoll beschriebene Details und Karaktäre.
