Regency Romance Short Story w/ a bit of Mystery

A Christmas Code by Jacki Delecki is a quaint regency romance short story in the Code Breaker series. The story centers around Viscount Ashworth who has one last undercover mission for His Majesty's service before he can retire to his familys estate in the country. This relatively simple assignment to protect the Prince Regent at a Christmas party turns into anything but a simple assignment after his childhood friend, Lady Gwyneth, is nearly killed more than once.

Although it is obvious that Ash and Gwyneth have feelings for each other beyond mere friendship, we don't get to see their relationship develop or mature, and to be honest, I just didnt feel any chemistry between the two. That having been said, I did like how Ash came to realize that Gwyneth was smarter than the traditional single female and together they figured out who intended to kill the Prince Regent.

Pearl Hewitt did a fantastic job narrating, as she did with the first book in the series. She brought the characters to life giving each one their own distinct voice, both male and female characters. She also has great intonation and pace, making this an entertaining experience. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.

Okay but not the best

I enjoyed parts of it but sometimes I cringed from the cheesiness and the narrator's multiple accents. However, I hated the ending and had no real feel of justice.

My Second read (listen) from author Jacki Delecki! Wonderful character development. I own both the Kindle and the Audible editions, so I followed along as I was being read to. The narrator did a good job of mixing her voice inflections to give character to the characters. Action and suspense (and romance) build throughout the book, until near the end you cannot wait to turn the next page! Delecki has created a series of books that you cannot wait to get to the next one.

I enjoyed this tale. Even though it is simple and predictable. And yes, Tim Campbell makes everything he reads fabulous so that is a huge bonus! But it was a sweet experience that had enough chemistry to make it sexy and the HEA that leaves a smile.

Lovely story

Well-written. I loved the characters. Good character development and nice, if predictable, story line. I enjoyed listening to this story and I like this narrator as well; he does a nice job with all the voices. I will listen to more from this author.

Gives Romance novels a bad name

The story is weak and the characters are weak. The premiums could have been entertaining but the author took this book in a very trite and simplistic direction.

Love Sin & Love Tim!

I've love Sin. He was charming in each of his other appearances in this series and I found him charming now. A shorter story than the rest in this series, but certainly worth a listen.

And yes, it's a little bit predictable at times. Overall, though, it follows the formula just fine and, like always, Christi Caldwell does a lovely job of it. My only complaint is that it felt a little rushed while the rest of the books in this series follow along at an even pace.

I must say, though, that if I had read this story rather than listening to it, I don't think I'd have enjoyed it quite so much. Tim Campbell makes every story he narrates come alive. I absolutely love his voice and the way he breathes life into the characters. He's just brilliant!

Really Dumb Heroine

The story wasnt bad, if rather simple. The hero seemed to be a great guy who handled the sudden, life changing situation in an adult, rational manner. Rafe lived up to the ducal contract to the letter and tried to make things as easy for Serafina as he possible could. He did not want to marry any more than she did.

Yes, Serafina had a miserable childhood. All emphasis was on her beauty and not much confirmation of her other attributes. Her parents were not kind and she didnt experience any love that I could see. Her original fiancé raped her repeatedly before his death. But she seemed to get past that fairly quickly when she was taught gentle loving by her new husband.

Aside from all that, I just wanted to smack her. It was obvious from the start that her husband adored her, but he had made a bargain with her before their marriage to allow her to live freely on her own and she was determined not to accept his love and to force him to let her leave. Of course, she didnt really WANT to leave, but had decided it was best for both of them.

The story left me wanting something more. A heroine with a brain would have helped. Im interested in hearing about Rafes sister, so Im hoping the second book in the series is better.

One other thing while the narrators voice was very good she constantly mispronounced words. Im not talking about foreign or difficult words. Im talking about simple words. Has Audible done away with editing entirely?

Worth a credit? Definitely not. I paid a miniscule amount because I wanted the Kindle book as well. And thats about what it was worth.

Listen for the Love Scenes....

Not embarrassed to admit ...sometimes I just wanna listen to a book for the love / sex scenes. There are plenty in this book. Is the story great - not really.

Good book!

I really enjoyed hearing Davy's story. the narrator was great, she is one of my favorite!!

The book is good. It would of been better if she would off just read the book ,instead of changing her voice.

Love blooms in a Wyoming winter...

A truly sweet historical romance in the tradition of Janette Oke. Her Convenient Cowboy is the story of a young couple adjusting to a life together after being thrust into marriage by need and the weather. I enjoyed the interaction between Davy and Rose, quickly coming to care about them both.

This was my first Lacy Williams historical but I felt that I was able to dive into the series and enjoy it even though I hadn't read any of the previous stories. Of course, I imagine that won't last long and that I will be looking for the rest of the series.

I truly enjoyed listening to the Audible version of this book. There was something about the narrator's voice that just fit the story perfectly. I'm sure coming up with the different voices for all of the characters was no easy task but the narrator was definitely up to it.

Overall Her Convenient Cowboy was a fun listen, one well worth the time spent with my ear glued to the speaker attached to my Kindle.

Too similar to Edgar's story

Had the same themes as Edgar and Jonas story teaching a city girl about ranch life even similar words like watching whether a horse ears were up or flat. Looking forward to Ricky's story but wish the girls were not so self critical and unable to survive. Brianna's story will be good if just for that alone!

I really liked how caring Davy was and how he understanding of all of Rose's fears.

She does a very good "timid" voice for Rose. It helped really show how scared Rose was.

I did not cry, but it was very heartwarming, especially Davy with the baby.

Very well written, NOT for everyone

Another very well written book by Laura Kinsale. N. Boulton, as usual, did an incredible job. He can truly make a book soooo much more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise. This book was a bit too dark for my taste. The hero had a tortured sole and as a result the book went down a very dark path. I am never able to not read a LK book straight through and with this book I found myself in need of relief from the angst. So I actually took about two weeks to complete this book vs the previous 24 hr ones by her. Overall a very well written and narrated book but not emotionally easy.

Flawed Characters Making a Glorious Mess!

Like many writers perhaps most -- Laura Kinsale says her characters take on a life of their own, behaving in ways that surprise even her. This must surely have been the case with the two leads in The Hidden Heart. Born with silver spoons in their mouths, at predictable stages in the story they spit them out and stomp on them. Shes a liar, and hes a coward. In later books, Ms. Kinsale does a better job of corralling her protagonists and quelling their more self-destructive tendencies; but, for me, following the adventures and misadventures of the H/h in The Hidden Heart is an exercise in frustration. (If another reviewer hadnt already used the word, Id use it here: infuriating!) They screw up at every possible turn.

But a Laura Kinsale book is always more than a romance. Her understanding of spoken English and its dialects would put Henry Higgins to shame. The captain of the steamer speaks a different English from the seaman on the deck -- which is different from the botanist/professor which is subtly different from the aristocrat. And Mr. Boulton captures it all with pitch-perfect clarity. There are wonderful ancillary characters the wretched Louisa, the adorable Mr. Sydney, the evil Stephen Eliot, and the Clarence Darrow Sergeant Wood -- all who come alive through Mr. Boultons voices and narration. And as someone who skimmed through the very-suspenseful black dungeon chapter in the paper-and-ink book, Mr. Boulton forced me to listen to the whole, excruciating scene making me realize, yet, again, that nobody does it better than Laura Kinsale.

This is not the best of this authors books. Buy it anyway. Youll still end up sitting in your car in your driveway with your ear-bud in while your ice cream melts in the back.

Laura Kinsale can make me cry. And laugh.

Sometimes I just have to stop listening so I can calm myself. Kinsale puts so many obstacles between her heroine and hero that the tension becomes excruciating yet so pleasurable I am compelled to keep listening well past my bedtime. Nicholas Boulton is a brilliant reader in a voice that makes the story full of life.

Of course, I highly recommend The Hidden Heart. What are you waiting for?

Love Laura Kinsale But...

Laura Kinsale's books are not easy, light romances, and if that is what you are looking for, these are not for you. Her characters are very, very complicated.

Good story

A good romance and plot. Unfortunately the last 2 books is the series seem to be getting slower with more meaningless conversation spread throughout the book resulting in less action. Also Bened seems to have lost this welch accent. I've liked this series from the beginning but I hope the author will cut out the childish conversations that feel like they have been written for semi-literates. Again, the basis for the whole series and its characters is very entertaining so I hope the author can streamline the next book.

This was a good story and I really liked Bened and Primrose. I was looking forward to Beneds story and Primrose suited him perfectly. She was kind and very brave. She thought nothing of holding a gun on someone, or bashing them in the head with a shovel. And when Morris and Brevan went to save Bened, who had been captured by Primroses murderous Aunt Augusta, she was right there with them. But it seemed to go on and on without any real excitement. This was a least favorite of the whole series. It was kind of repetitive, too. It could have been a much smaller book. 352 pages was too long. You could have dropped 100 pages and not missed a thing. I still liked it, because I like Bened, but I wouldnt read it again like I would the others.

The one thing that was so annoying was the sooo 21st century phrase, end her. We just need to end Aunt Augusta. Someone just needs to end her. When are we going to "end" her? Really? I think thats a totally stupid phrase to begin with and now I have to read it in a historical novel. UGH.

I do love Modred (the Duke) and Dob. They are so real and down to earth. But then, so are Morris, Brevan, Argus, Lorelei and Penelope. And I really liked Simeon, Lilybet, Uncle George and Frederick. Aunt Augusta did get what she deserved but her crew of bad guys really did suck. Every time you turned around shed have to hire new ones because the others were either killed or overpowered and the magistrate was called to haul them away. That was really quite funny.

One reviewer called the sex in this book mild. I would have to beg to differ. Explicitly written sex, including oral, is far from mild. Which is fine with me but a lot of you dont like that so you might want to skip this book.

As to the narrator: The narrator was a little terrible this time. She was rather robotic and except for a couple of times yelling she had no emotions at all.

Great series!

Loved it as always! Love the continuation of characters from one book to the other...you feel like you are still connected to them.

The Springtime Mail Order Bride continues the journey of many characters that we have come to know in the Holiday Mail Order Bride series. The characters are entertaining and well developed. The story line is fresh and mingles characters from previous books so you feel like the story continues where it left off. The plot moves along at a good pace. This is a sweet and delightful story that will captivate you and keep your attention from the beginning to the end.

Michael Rahhal did a fantastic job on the narration. He really brought the characters to life. He did a great job with the different accents, especially the Irish accent. Sometimes his impersonations made me giggle. I had to laugh every single time he said uhh huh. You can hear the passion in his performance with the concise and clear speech while adding depth to the story.

Kit Morgan is one of my favorite authors. I know that when I pick up one of her books that I wont be disappointed. Even though this is part of a series, each book can be read as a stand-alone. I have read/listened to each book back to back. If you are looking for a good mail order bride series to start, then I recommend to start with the Holiday Mail Order Bride series. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a heartwarming mail order bride romance.

Medieval Melodrama

Sword fights, kidnappings, tantrums, and tyrants: this novel has all the ups and downs to keep a reader hooked. As with most romances half the fun is yelling from the sidelines things like "Get a clue!" And "you idiot, you love her!" Imagery and characters are developed beyond the superficial; I just wish the peril felt more dire. I was too certain he would save her every time. I liked that the plot had many twists and turn and that it didn't just end when the initial conflict was solved. It felt more like a full slice of life, albeit a rather improbable one. The only annoyance for me was the "innocence" of the protagonist; sometimes it just felt like pathetic airheadedness. Thankfully Diana was endearing in other ways.

Another Excellent Read

Where does My Desperate Highlander rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

I loved this story!!! awesome storyline, just the right amount of action adventure and romance.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Still love Logan and Gwyneth, Alex and Maddie, and all my other favorite characters, Brenna, Lily, Torrian, and all the other Grants and Ramsays. I have a bit less of a mental image of Michiel from this book which is a wee bit disappointing. I wish I knew how tall he is.

Mispronounced words an unfortunate distraction.

I loved the story, however the mispronounced words gave the impression of it being read by a computer. Instead of hearth she kept saying "herth", and there were many other similarly mispronounced words. I did finish the book, and I enjoyed the story very much, the characters were sweet.

how refreshing to listen to a story that I don't have to wade through foul language or other compromises with Christian values. it was an intriguing story with a good outcome and hard to put down.

Clean Romance with Substance

This well written and narrated hstorical romance takes place in Pennsylvania, USA. This book has memorable characters, a touch of mystery and a story that is both heart wrenching and triumphant. It is a clean Christian read that includes true to life events, which I'm sure, some Christians may find unappealing. I applaud the author for allowing these characters to sin and not be perfect. These imperfections enhanced the believability and made for a better story. Yes, bad things happen to good people....and this book shows that although God may allow a bad situation to happen He still holds our hand and guides us through it. I will definitely be getting the next book in this series.

If you enjoy clean romances with substance.......give this one a try.

Wholesome, yet Romantic

First book I've listened to from this author and just loved it! Wholesome, yet romantic. Loved the story and characters. The narrator was great also. Can't wait to read #2 in this series.

I just can't do it

I'm going to get a refund. I read the negative reviews on the narrator and thought I could power my way through it, since I love Laura Franz's writing so much. The narrator literally ruined the writing. Why, oh why, do the authors allow such horrid narrators to destroy their work? Ugh. I really wanted to "read' this. Maybe I'll pick it up in print someday and try again.

What a story

With twists and turns that I never expected, Loves Reckoning captured me and held me hostage until the end! Ive even found myself speaking with a Scottish rogue! The author did an amazing job of bringing to light the history of the period and weaving it with a special love story. Im a big fan!!
