    Publisher's Summary:
After months of maternity leave, tough-talking Espoo police detective Maria Kallio is ready to return to work. But before assuming her new post as head of the Violent Crime Unit, she vacations with her husband and daughter on the island of Rödskär. There Kallio learns that, one year earlier, her ex-boyfriend Harri had mysteriously fallen to his death from the isle's steep and treacherous cliffs.
On the anniversary of that event, Harri's boss, the CEO of an allegedly nontoxic paint company, loses his life on those very same rocks. In light of such a coincidence, Kallio searches for the link between these two tragedies and is soon convinced that they weren't accidents - they were murders. As the Finnish nights grow longer, so too does the list of suspects. Was the CEO's disillusioned wife involved? His environmental-activist son? Or perhaps his rebellious daughter? Or might the culprit be his half-brother, an adventurous sailor whom Kallio finds altogether a little too intriguing?
From internationally bestselling Finnish author Leena Lehtolainen comes the sixth book of the gripping Maria Kallio Mystery series.

Love the narrator, always makes me feel comfortable, so I can relax and enjoy the story!
    Excellent story with ourstanding narration
Fatal Headwind is the most recent novel in the 6 book Maria Kallio series. I've now completed Books 3-6, will soon listen to Books 1& 2, and look forward to the release of Book 7 next April. This series of police detective novels is set in Finland and the author is Finnish. Lawyer turned police detective Maria Kallio is back from maternity leave and is now a police lieutenant. He husband is staying home with the baby. Kallio's coworker who acted as police lieutenant in her absence is unhappy about relinquishing the role and reporting to Kallio. The murder Kallio's team is investigating is of a man whose family owns a paint family. The family is dysfunctional to understate the case. I really like this series and strongly recommend it.
    Good story..bad reading
The story is well put togather in the cold Helsinki autum.
This kind of the american language does not suits this story.
It is difficult to listen to.

It's 1983. Vancouver is on the precipice of transforming itself from a dirty little town to a blandly sophisticated big city. Convertibles cruise beneath runty palm trees, and the air is filled with the delicious tang of ocean breezes, cheeseburgers, and pot smoke.
In this fast and furious crime novel set in the midst of a long West Coast summer, an Eastern European immigrant named Irina absconds with a shipment of drugs and $300,000 in dirty money, setting into motion a wild chain reaction involving bounty hunters, corrupt cops, lowbrow scammers, and her bewildered, straitlaced ex-husband. High-end sushi bars, nightclubs, and New Wave art galleries all figure in this stylish neon noir that blows the roof off traditional crime fiction: a slick and sexy tonic that takes listeners on a genre bender of dizzying proportions.

    Publisher's Summary:
When a body wrapped in a blue plastic tarp and tied up with twine is discovered by the bushes near a quiet suburban Tokyo neighborhood, Lieutenant Reiko Himekawa and her squad take the case. The victim was slaughtered brutally - his wounds are bizarre, and no one can figure out the "what" or the "why" of this crime.
At age 29 Reiko Himekawa of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police's Homicide Division is young to have been made lieutenant, particularly because she lacks any kind of political or family connections. Despite barriers created by age, gender, and lack of connections, she is mentally tough and oblivious to danger and has an impressive ability to solve crimes.
Reiko makes a discovery that leads the police to uncover 11 other bodies, all wrapped in the same sort of plastic. Few of the bodies are identifiable, but the ones that are have no connection to each other. The only possible clue is a long-shot lead to a website spoken of only in whispers on the Internet, something on the dark web known as Strawberry Night.
But while Reiko is hunting the killer, the killer is hunting her...and she may very well have been marked as the next victim.

    Five Stars
must read if you love japanese crime novels
    Thriller set in TOKYO
The Silent Dead is not for the faint-hearted. It is Tokyo noir at its bestâ and most gruesome.
A series of twelve quite mind bogglingly evil and brutal murders threatens to confound the police. The investigation is led by Reiko Himekawa, an unusually young (and female) Lieutenant in the murder squad of Tokyo City Police. She has very little to go onâ possibly a connection to the second Sunday evening of the month, and possibly a dark web reference to âStrawberry Nightâ. She, herself, was a rape victim when young â and the experience still haunts her. She is a very tough and insightful detective â who proceeds as much on âinstinctâ as hard evidence. She is quite definitely a woman in a manâs world â and she suffers sexual harassment (and harassment in general) as she goes about her duties. The loyal team she leads is blatantly set up to compete with another fronted by the less than honest Lieutenant Kensaku Katsumata â and one of the key sub plots of The Silent Dead is the competition between them as they explore the murky existence of the Tokyo underworld and its inhabitants.
In parallel with the main story of the investigation, Honda also tracks back (one chapter in fourâ) to the very disturbed life of a young girl who was abused by her stepfather and eventually burnt him to death in the family home, before ending up in and out of psychiatric institutions. You will not be surprised to hear that the two stories eventually come togetherâ
For TripFiction readers this is locationally a great book. Very much set in Tokyo with good descriptions of many different areas (some less desirable to visit than othersâ). The Silent Dead sold over 4m copies in Japan alone and is the first in a series of five novels featuring Reiko Himekawa. It is also the first to be translated into English and is published simultaneously in the UK and the US.
As I said at the beginning, The Silent Dead is not for the faint hearted.

Female detective in a man's world
Borderline is a novel about two female detectives investigating a murder of a woman with borderline disorder, and as the story develops, this woman seems to have ruined many people's lives, so there are many suspects.
We also get insight in the two detectives personal lives, struggles and their constant struggle when it comes to female detectives in a man's world. There are a lot sexism in this book and it made it rather dull. We've heard enough about the sexism in law enforcement - guys, get over it!
I usually enjoy detective novels, but I also expect these novels to be filled with a good sense of humor. I didn't have any laughs even that the book is loaded with original characters, who actually could be funny. Most of the characters weren't very likeable, and that annoyed the heck out of me.
I'm sure this book has a large audience, so it could be just me not all that captivated by it. It was hard to hold the attention, even the plot is well-developed. However, I didn't feel the characters was developed enough.
Narrator Pamela Almand was outstanding in her performance, and did voices and accents very well. She was very lively and involved and I'd love to hear her in other genres. She didn't have a girly voice, which made her very good when it came to the many male voices in this book.
*This book was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review. Read all my reviews at mybookhype dot com.
    Strong Female Leads
I like that there were 2 strong female leads in this book. The story was definitely interesting and I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen. Some of the dialogue seemed a little strange to me, but overall, I liked where the story and characters went.
I believe this was my first experience with Pamela Almand's narration. She did a nice job with the various characters and capturing the experience of the female detectives.

Really enjoyable, entertaining and interesting murder mystery.
Inspired by actual events? The truth is stranger than fiction.
This one kept me guessing for a bit. The story is fast paced and constantly moves forward. Several intersecting plot lines along twists and turns and another murder add to the mystery.

    Extremely well written thriller/mystery!
A suspenseful thriller/mystery that grabbed my attention and held it tightly from the beginning, all the way through to the end. I didn't want to put the book down and found myself staying up late to continue reading it. Plot and details are real and the characters are well developed without being stereotyped. The author has a way of presenting characters and scenes that lets the reader feel, taste, smell, and hear the details, almost as if the reader were actually present in the story. Story locations and scene details are extremely well researched and never feel contrived.
I highly recommend this book and am anxiously awaiting the author's next publication so that I can get my next fix!
    Excellent Must-Read!!!
This is a great third book in the series (you do not have to read the first two in order to follow, though). You are basically following the same character(s) from the other books. Beginning from page one, the story is action-packed and fast paced. It's hard to put this book down!! Just like the other books, Drift and Deadout, the stories pull you in and keep you interested the entire time. There is also an element of humor and some romance in there, as well! The suspense and action, as well as the science related to GMOs, is all very intriguing and page-turning!
Jon McGoran has has put together another great book with curent issues that affect everyone's future

    Interesting story, great narration
Although I thought the story had an interesting premise, the writing could have used some more extensive editing. There were so many instances of sentences ending in prepositions that I wanted to get out my red pencil. Additionally, for the audio version, I would recommend leaving out many of the ", he/she/name said" references, particularly in light of the narrator's ability to make the characters come to life with unique voices and inflections for each. I could have easily followed along without those descriptors. Finally, the last chapter got monotonous with excessive "he/I" references to the unexpected and cool twist described. I got it right away so it was unnecessary. Overall it was a very fun listen and I would add any sequels to my listening queue. I'm interested to know what happens next. Particular kudos to the narrator for painting a picture I could see in my mind as I enjoyed the story!
    Enjoyable
Loved it the time period that takes you back to days when movies were in black and white and gangsters ran the cities. The narrator's many voices , along with the colorfully written dialogue keep the story moving forward and wanting more. The twist at the end was totally surprising.
    A Nutso Pulpy Ride

A 1930's trumpet player is bequeathed a magic belt that saves his life and turns him into the Grim Spectre--a crime-fighting supernatural entity. In his effort to rid the city of corruption he takes on an unhinged ex-priest, a professional wrestler, a vodouist, and a doctor who has injected himself with simian DNA. And then things start to get weird.
The dialogue is snappy and humorous and the actor-reader does a great job trying on the different voices.

Detective Esa Khattak heads up Canada's Community Policing Section, which handles minority-sensitive cases across all levels of law enforcement. Khattak is still under scrutiny for his last case, so he's surprised when INSET, Canada's federal intelligence agency, calls him in on another potentially hot-button issue. For months, INSET has been investigating a local terrorist cell that is planning an attack on New Year's Day. INSET had an informant, Mohsin Dar, undercover inside the cell. But now, just weeks before the attack, Mohsin has been murdered at the group's training camp deep in the woods.
INSET wants Khattak to give the appearance of investigating Mohsin's death and then to bury the lead. They can't risk exposing their operation or Mohsin's role in it. But Khattak used to know Mohsin, and he knows he can't just let this murder slide. So Khattak sends his partner, Detective Rachel Getty, undercover into the ultraconservative mosque that houses the terrorist cell. As Rachel tentatively reaches out into the unfamiliar world of Islam and begins developing relationships with the people of the mosque and the terrorist cell within it, the potential reasons for Mohsin's murder seem only to multiply, from the political and ideological to the intensely personal.
The Unquiet Dead author Ausma Zehanat Khan once again dazzles with a brilliant mystery carefully woven into a profound and intimate story of humanity.

What would it be like to return to your hometown after 25 years in prison for a crime you have maintained you did not commit? And why would you?
Walter Desmond is back in Trafalgar, British Columbia, having been officially exonerated when new evidence showed corruption at worst, incompetence at best, by the Trafalgar City Police conducting the investigation. His pit-bull attorney is seeking five million in damages from the provincial government. But Walt has not returned to Trafalgar to pursue money or revenge. He just wants to know the why of it.
The family of the murdered girl, Sophia D'Angelo, is bitterly determined to see Walt returned to prison - or dead. But for Trafalgar's police, including Sergeant John Winters and Constable Molly Smith, the reality is that if Walter didn't kill Sophia, someone else did. So, case reopened, it lands on Winters' desk. The records are moldering. One investigating officer is dead, the other is retired - and not talking. The police are instructed to treat Walt as if he'd never been arrested or convicted.
Someone else apparently killed Sophia, someone still walking free. But too many minds remain closed. It's good luck for Walt that a group of women in town for the dragon boat race are staying in the B&B where he's booked - women with no local prejudices. But then a townswoman, then a boat woman, are attacked by a rapist, the media gets active, and tempers dangerously flare.

    Another Great Book
Although I miss the Jake Tiptree series, I am beginning to enjoy the the Lizzie Snow mysteries. Sarah Graves does a great job weaving a tale with realistic characters that readers can identify with. She also does a great job creating believable drama and tension in her stories. I look forward to the next book in this series.
