Subtitle: A Stonechild and Rouleau Mystery
    Author: Brenda Chapman
    Narrator: Michelle St. John
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-30-17
    Publisher: Dundurn
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Police Procedurals
    Publisher's Summary:
Two separate crimes, two tragic outcomes.
Jacques Rouleau has moved to Kingston to look after his father and take up the position of head of the town's Criminal Investigations Division. One hot week in late September, university student Leah Sampson is murdered in her apartment. In another corner of the city, Della Munroe is raped by her husband. At first the crimes appear unrelated, but as Sergeant Rouleau and his new team of officers dig into the women's pasts, they discover unsettling coincidences.
When Kala Stonechild, one of Rouleau's former officers from Ottawa, suddenly appears in Kingston, Rouleau enlists her to help. Stonechild isn't sure if she wants to stay in Kingston, but agrees to help Rouleau in the short term. While she struggles with trying to decide if she can make a life in this new town, a ghost from her past starts to haunt her.
As the detectives delve deeper into the cases, it seems more questions pop up than answers. Who murdered Leah Sampson? And why does Della Monroe's name keep showing up in the murder investigation? Both women were hiding secrets that have unleashed a string of violence. Stonechild and Rouleau race to discover the truth before the violence rips more families apart.
    Critic Reviews:
"This novel is well-paced and well-plottedthe book also smartly sets up some subplots that will no doubt carry the series forward." (Edmonton Journal)

    Definitely has good potential!
This is the first book in a police procedural series, featuring Jacques Rouleau, head of the Criminal Investigations Division, and Kala Stonechild, whom he recruits to come work with him. It takes place in Canada, and was a pretty enjoyable listen.
The basic story involves the murder of an employee from a college campus mental health phone service, and a couple of side stories that do not, at first, seem to be connected but will prove to be quite important. Rouleau and Stonechild have personal stories that are opened here, and I assume will be more fleshed out in future books.
The narration was pretty good, the story was not perfect but seemed as though this author is laying the groundwork for future books. I certainly recommend this one, and think the whole series will be well worth listening to. I already have gotten the next book and look forward to hearing it.
    Just OK
This is a routine police procedural. It seems to be the first of a series of stories about the same characters. Perhaps the characters will become more interesting as they are developed. However, there was nothing that caught my interest enough to buy a second book.
Michelle St. John's voice has a pleasing tone and good diction. Howevert her narration didn't bring any of the characters to life.
This isn't a bad story, but there isn't anything very special about it.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1989, a school bus filled with young children disappears. It drove into a tunnel, a tunnel with no exits, and did not drive out. Witnesses saw the bus go in. No one saw it come out. It vanished into thin air as a community panics. Everyone panics.
Everyone except for a 24-year-old college dropout named Jacob Thorne.
In 2004, three people are brutally murdered, two of them in a sealed panic room, a room locked from the inside. The only trace evidence is a single hair from the suspect. A suspect that has been dead for three months, killed by the same people who were just murdered in the panic room. Everyone is convinced a ghost has come back from the grave to avenge a murder.
Everyone, that is, except for a young DC homicide detective suffering from PTSD named Emma Kane.
To be a profiler, it takes more than just research and hard work. It takes more than simply brains. It takes...talent. And you need to have it from the very beginning. Talents - An Emma Kane/Jacob Thorne thriller. An origin story of two very unique people.

    Loved It!
I loved this book, which is a prequel & shows how Emma & Jacob started working with the FBI. Jacob's background with his dad & his dad's partner are featured & show us a lot about how the Jacob of today came to be. Gives us the info on Emma's background too. Realistic situations & well written characters move the story along quickly. It was one of those rare books where I kept checking how far along I was on my Kindle, because I didn't want it to end.
If you like a good crime novel, check out this whole series. You won't be sorry.
    Another Winner!
Another winner for Todd Travis! This book is made up of two separate prequel stories involving Kane and Thorne's earlier years before the actions of the previous two books happened. A combination of crime mysteries coupled with their own personalities made this a hard book to stop reading. Jacob Thorne is a 24 year old spending his time making money from playing chess with strangers at $10 a win when Kimberly Stevens approches him with an offer of finding his father, but they end up with the mystery of the disappearance of a bus load of kids and their driver. Emma Kane's story takes place after "the Van Incident" where she is sent to solve a multiple murder mystery. The stories remind me of Sherlock Holmes where the reader is presented with a set of crime facts that is a real puzzle. I would have to say that the author writes some of the toughest women personalities in literature that I've read which I really enjoy. If you haven't read the other two books "Creatures of Appetites" and "Trophies" I highly recommend them for twisted crime stories. Looking forward to book number 4!
    Love him and his stories
Todd Travis is my dark hero. I love his complex characters and his involved stories that keep you reading through the night. I love to hate him when he leaves me literally hanging in every ending but it only makes the anticipation that much sweeter. I cant wait for his next one. Extra bonus.....we get to see what his next steps are as we have received a copy for review of his next novella. Thank you Todd!! You magic man
    Excellent characters
I absolutely loved these books. Read every one of them in less than 2 days.

    Hard to put down
May has created a riveting suspense enmeshed with police procedures that often frustrate, childhood friends, business partners, and for Mandy, a hint of romance. The only person Mandy ever trusted was her brother Charlie, who died years before in the line of duty, and then her friend Alex. As the betrayals and double-dealings unfold, the similarities of these murders to Charlie's and the duplicity, infidelity, and deceit uncovered are consistent with the meaning of "perfidy."
I read this in two sittings, both times staying up too late. The pace is quick and murders and funerals come one after the other. The inter-relationships of the characters are woven gradually and when revealed make sense as does the identity of the murder. I liked Mandy as a stubborn and smart protagonist. Characters of Mel and Freeman are strong supporting characters. I hope we see more of them in the future. I've added INCONSPICUOUS (the second in the series) to my TBR list.
FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in the hopes that I would post an honest review. This has not affected the content of my review in any way.
    Top-Notch Mystery
I received a copy to facilitate my review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
From the time I first started reading chapter books, the mystery genre became my favorite. I have to say after all of these years reading mysteries I am still not real good at figuring out the mystery. When I read the synopsis of this book I knew it was one I wanted to read. We have a very dysfunctional family. Mandy is the daughter of a police officer. Her mother and fatherâs marriage began to fall apart when Mandyâs best friend, her brother, also a police officer was killed. Her mother is convinced her son was pushed into this line of work by Mandyâs father. Now Mandyâs mom has gone missing. The father doesnât seem worried because she often goes missing for short periods of time. This time however, theyâve found her car with traces of blood in it.
The author keeps you guessing as to who would have something against the mother. The story starts off very ominous. The tension is kept going from page one to the last page. The characters are very well developed. I have to say once again I was unable to figure it all out until the end.

    Super entertaining and twisting story
Williams takes her years of Philly FBI experience and weaves a twisty tale of classic city hall corruption along with personal trauma, emotional challenges and political infighting. Great story.
Great Story From an FBI Insider
Would you listen to Pay to Play again? Why?
Yes. Author knows the inner workings of an investigation, and it is fascinating to see how it really works.
What other book might you compare Pay to Play to and why?
If you like the procedural aspects of Michael Connelly but with a risque edge, you will love Pay to Play.
What does Melissa Reizian Frank bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Superb delivery.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
You are very interested in the main character, and want to race through the book to find out her secret.
    Any additional comments?
Author has a fantastic podcast that gives you insight into her writing process, and conducts interviews with retired FBI officers that shows she is a respected former FBI agent who knows the intricate details of how investigations are conducted.
    A Wild Ride
Pay to Play took my by surprise. I heard about it through the author on her podcast and was intrigued. The world Mrs. Williams creates is alive. It feels real, tangible, you become fully engulfed in it. It is full personal struggles and vices that the characters endure. You care for them and their families feeling the their plights as you go through the story. Overall, I was very pleased with the book and enjoyed it. There were some moments that were graphic and shocked me, but they lend to the authenticity of the world she creates. Would I recommend her book, yes. But be ready for a wild ride
    Exciting, Emotional, Very Realistic.
You will be excited with insight of actual FBI procedures. That will let you to know what really goes on behind the scenes.
But also the emotion that a well trained Special Agent must experience, and try to control.
There are several wow moments in the book.

Good narrator. Good Book. Perfect combination
I am reposting the review as my original Audible review for this book has disappeared.
In all of my reading - I have preferred reading paperback, ebook or hardcover books as opposed to audio books. I have not been impressed with audio books - the narrators' voices did not match the characters I had in mind, the inflections were off, they did not seem to get the plot. That is - until this book.
The narrator for this book is perfect. He has the deep, whiskey laden voice that is reminiscent of the old days of black and white TV Private Detective narrators. It evokes images of 'Dames, Gams, Whiskey, Martinis, smoke filled rooms, etc' and woos you into the life of a NYPD Officer instead of a Private Investigator.
The narrator's other voices are good as well. A couple of voices made me chuckle - in the best of ways.
This book (and hopefully series) is original and it is refreshing. It is not a spy book. It is not a Private Investigator book. Yet it has elements of both intertwined with the NYPD.
This book is a good peek into the life of a NYPD Detective, one of the good ones. The main character, Jake Turner, is a man, he is solid and he is not like the current psychobabble navel reflecting alpha turned beta males that are so common place in action books these days.
He is straightforward, all male, he has a brain, can think, strategize, plan and he can assess situations accurately. He is not a muscle bound oaf that requires a female to think for him. He has a good heart. Refreshing.
He is out to expose corruption and take down the corrupt even at the expense of his career.
The women are strong - USA Pioneer strong with a healthy dose of sass, wit, intelligence and humor as well. Feminine and strong.
I appreciate the end. For ONCE in a long time - unlike most books on the market today - we do not have some nefarious bad buy who got away with their deeds waiting to pop up in a future book.
It is nice to have closure - and a solid closure. One I think many will relate to.
I don't want to give the story away - so I will end this review here.
Given the landscape is in New York - I can only imagine the scenarios that can be painted for future books.

    Good second book in series...
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
When a Mexican woman and later her father are arrested for murder and then arson I knew this was going to be a good book. Add to that Racial unrest and wealthy bad boys who "Would never do that!)! and you can kind of predict how this story is going to end up.
What does Tanya Eby bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I always like listening to Tanya Eby. I think she did a great job narrating.
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book. Elaine Viets wrote a book that contains issues relevant today with unrest between locals and the Mexican immigrants. It didn't matter to the locals if they were here legally, were citizens or even if they had businesses and family. These people would never be part of the community.
When a wealthy local Caucasian man dies on a house fire, his younger Mexican fiancé is blamed by the good old boys in law enforcement and she is arrested.
When Angela Richmon the death investigator looks at the actual facts, they don't add up but convincing the authorities will not be easy
This is a good suspense and I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED it.
If you have Kindle Unlimited the cost is a whole $1.99!!
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
    Thank You.
    Excellent police procedural; excellent narration!
Fire and Ashes is Book 2 in the Death Investigator Angela Richman series by Elaine Viets. I have not listened to Book 1. The brief publisher's summary provides a perfect setup to the novel, so I will not add to it. The suspense related to action is intense but not constant. The suspense related to the investigation is intense and constant. I enjoyed this novel. Tanya Eby narrates wonderfully as is usual for her.
    Entertaining
This is a very entertaining book with engaging and realistic characters and plot. I like how the author gives a prologue at the end. I look forward to the next book.

    Good book
The narrator was not very good in my opinion.
The book was pretty good same story with the same ending though.
A British accent takes away from the storyline.
The narrator's British accent takes away from the story. When you have a narrator that does not know how to pronounce La Joya, it just takes away from the enjoyment of the storyline.
Good Story! Narrator Spoiled the Book
Overall a well-written and interesting story. Thanks to Kindle, I was able to finish this novel, which is set in Los Angeles with American characters, names, locations, etc. The narrators accent reminded me of all the British police procedurals Ive read. Whilst listening I tried to ignore the accent but kept getting distracted and yanked out of the story, especially when common place names were mispronounced. Suggest a different narrator.

    Publisher's Summary:
Police Sergeant William South has a good reason to shy away from murder investigations: He is a murderer himself.
Long-listed for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year
A methodical, diligent, and exceptionally bright detective, South is an avid birdwatcher and trusted figure in his small town on the rugged Kentish coast. He also lives with the deeply buried secret that, as a child in Northern Ireland, he may have killed a man.
When a fellow birdwatcher is found murdered in his remote home, South's world flips. The culprit seems to be a drifter from South's childhood. The victim was the only person connecting South to his early crime, and a troubled, vivacious new female sergeant has been relocated from London and assigned to work with South. As our hero investigates, he must work ever harder to keep his own connections to the victim and his past a secret.
The Birdwatcher is British crime fiction at its finest: a stirring portrait of flawed, vulnerable investigators, a meticulously constructed mystery, and a primal story of fear, loyalty, and vengeance.
    Critic Reviews:
"Well told [and] affecting. The writing is beautifully understated, and the characters are vividly drawn and likable in their imperfections. Shaw makes the stony landscape an important element in the work; it becomes, by the end of the story, a place to which readers will feel a curiously strong attachment." (Booklist)
"Engaging.... A fine procedural.... The action builds to a thrilling ending." (Publishers Weekly)
"Award-winning author Shaw...delivers an outstanding stand-alone novel; its gritty protagonist, intricate plot, and atmospheric description of the English countryside will please readers of Tana French's 'Dublin Murder Squad' series." (Library Journal)

    Very Entertaining Police Procedural Series
I really liked the way this book starts out with two Russian mobsters taking control of a wealthy community and leading you to believe they are behind a brilliant financial scheme, either sell them what they want from you or risk the consequences. How they did it, in the first chapter a wealthy attorney and his high priced call girl are by his pool. She decides to go for a swim when someone releases 20 water moccasins in his backyard. She dies, he gets away with only one small bite on his leg while running away. After that the demands to the wealthy and influential people increase and so do the threats. But don't think you have it figured out, it took the protagonist, Charlie Parker 90% of the book to figure out who the real bad guy is.
The narrator Phil Thron did an excellent job narrating.
    This book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

    Thank You.
    Wow!
Both the author and narrator were new to me, and I am so happy that I found them. I will definitely look for more books with them. The narrator did a great job with all of his accents for the various characters. The book was full of twists. My review is not a synopsis of the book but rather my opinion of it. I was voluntarily provided with this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. I thought this book was a great standalone listen and it is part of a series.
    Keeps you on your toes
If you're looking for an entertaining mystery that keeps you guessing and is entertaining to the max, you've found your poison. My advice: go into this books as I did, knowing absolutely nothing about it for maximum enjoyment.
Narrator Phil Thron did a great job with pacing and I liked the resonance of his voice. He helped paint the images in my mind. Now of course, those picture were painted by virtue of the excellent writing by author Tom Turner.
I'm so glad I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by either the author, narrator or publisher in exchange for this honest review, but even if I hadn't been, I'd have happily paid for this book, and in fact I will go back and pay for Volume 1 now. Hoping for future works, as well. Enjoy this mystery treat and its surprises as you listen. Recommended.
    Loved it.

I received a copy of this audio title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
I have to say I absolutely loved this book. Fun story, fantastic characters (love them crazy Russians), and a satisfying conclusion. I don't want to spoil anything, but hat's off to Tom Turner for coming up with a really unique way to murder people! Didn't realize when I started listening that this was the second book in the series.
