Sixteen-year-old Jae Hwa Lee is a Korean-American girl with a black belt, a deadly proclivity with steel-tipped arrows, and a chip on her shoulder the size of Korea itself. When her widowed dad uproots her to Seoul from her home in L.A., Jae thinks her biggest challenges will be fitting in to a new school and dealing with her dismissive Korean grandfather. Then she discovers that a Korean demi-god, Haemosu, has been stealing the soul of the oldest daughter of each generation in her family for centuries. And she's next.
But thats not Jaes only problem. There's also Marc. Irresistible and charming, Marc threatens to break the barriers around Jae's heart. As the two grow closer, Jae must decide if she can trust him. But Marc has a secret of his ownone that could help Jae overturn the curse on her family for good. It turns out that Jae's been wrong about a lot of things: Her grandfather is her greatest ally, even the tough girl can fall in love, and Korea might just be the home she's always been looking for.

Fresh Fun in a Fabulous Setting
One of the first things that struck me about Gilded, besides its ridiculously cool cover designed by Abby Kuperstock, was how fresh the story seemed. If you examine any individual element, it's been done before: protagonist girl with abilities of which she is unaware and a willingness to go where angels dare not tread, the cool and slightly shy boyfriend who the object of the gorgeous girl's desire, the over-worked and slightly overbearing widowed father who hides his true care and concern under a gruff exterior and the insanely powerful, other-worldly bad guy. Then again, I and the best chefs in Paris can use the same ingredients to prepare a meal but you'll want to eat the end result of their cooking over mine. While there is nothing really new under the sun, Christian Farley melds the characters, worlds, writing style and narrative elements to make something really fresh and new. The writing is clear, the dialog crisp and the storyline twisty enough to be fun and keep you guessing while not so winding that you can't remember your way.
As I often do, I went between the Kindle and Audible versions (using Whispersync for Voice to keep a smooth transition). Greta Jung did a beautiful job narrating, fully allowing you to immerse in Jae's world. Her pacing was spot on; I particularly liked her smooth-talking Haemosu.
Loved it. Haven't heard 1 like it
Really enjoyed this story. I hadn't heard one like it and thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the different myths and culture. Great story
    Gilded
While this is not my favorite type of book, overall I really enjoyed it, holding my intrest from start to finish. It's squeaky clean & perfect for the whole family to read together.
There's a couple of kisses, explained in detail, because of the deep feelings involved. But no one starts explaining how the rest of their body begins to feel, while they're kissing... the way "Young Adult" novels do.
& while the main character Jay, is super fighsty, the language is clean. Clean without being a geek. The worst thing she might say is "go to hell!"...
I would catagorize this book as a "Classic Adventure" for the whole family, the kind you read more than once.
    Incredible Korean Fantasy
Very impressive fantasy, and the narrator's voice is beautiful.

    Setting, story, narration: all solid!
Just about perfect. The story is great, with a strong setting that reveals the peacefulness and wildness of the west at once. The main character is strong and sassy and smart and irresponsible, but completely like-able. Mystery and adventure are weaved into the story, and I just guarantee that you'll love it! I'm SERIOUS about my audiobooks, and this one is a big hit!

    Wonderful!
I've read this book about 3 times in paper back form and just got the audio version so I could work on things and still have a book. I love that the narrator changed her voice for characters and it made the book all the greater!
    Excellent!
Educational, Well - Written, Fantastic Narrator. Although fictional, this is based on a real life story. After listening to it myself, I used this as homeschooling curriculum for my 7 year old daughter. There are so many hidden educational gems in here about everything from the conflicts between the Native American tries, white sellers and the French, to the way that cross were planted, cared for and harvested, fires created, babies raised, health needs, etc. We love it and I highly recommend it!
    Understanding Indian's daily life
My children 6th and 4th grade enjoyed it. It gave us a glimpse of what Indians were like. We think of them as savages and forget their humanity. Loved that we now have more perspectives of the people in our past. This book enriched our knowledge.
    Great story!!
I truly enjoyed listening this story! It lets you see both sides equally and gives you an inside view on how Native Americans lived. Not only is it educational but it's very entertaining!
Boring story geared more toward 8-yr-olds...
...than teens 11 to 13. At 11-13 I was reading both "age appropriate" books as well as books written for adults. This is one I would have read when I was 7 or 8, though I think even younger kids will find it boring because there's no story in this story. It seems more like a description of some mildly interesting historical facts (whether accurate or not, I don't know) punctuated by Molly/Mary's repetitious thoughts.

    Publisher's Summary:
Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the Outside abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she cant leave him to die. She smuggles him into her familys barn - at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.
    Members Reviews:
Not well written and under performed.
What would have made The Hallowed Ones better?
Take out all the words and start all over again.
What was most disappointing about Laura Bickles story?
The fact that it was sold as an Amish story and had very little to do with the Amish way of life.
How could the performance have been better?
The reader couldn't read well. She read a sentence and then, as if she had forgotten the next few words were in the same sentence, she sort of added them on in a lower voice.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Hallowed Ones?
I did not finish the book. I would have taken out the first scene of the helicopter crash and the "beast" or whatever in the helicopter.
    Any additional comments?
Couldn't stand it. I very seldom not finish a book but this one was too much for me. I paid for it for nothing.
    The Hallowed Ones
If you could sum up The Hallowed Ones in three words, what would they be?
    Spirited, complex, and intriguing
What did you like best about this story?
I thought I was ahead of the story, and could guess what happened next. I loved that I was wrong at each turn. The story wasn't what I expected and kept me guessing until the very end.
Which character as performed by Nora Hunter was your favorite?
I loved the main character Katie. She was always questioning. She wanted answers and wouldnt just sit by and take the opinions of others as truths.
    Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book. It makes a person question their own beliefs and thoughts on religion and life. Even though this book is a work of fiction, it creates questions about religion and truth.
Great twist on an old tale
The end of the world as we know it from an Amish point of view. Well told.
    Old Fashioned Vampire Horror
The Hallowed Ones is an old fashioned YA horror story with a twist: adding in the perspective of a slightly rebellious teen Amish heroine. The author does a great job of ratcheting up the terror and unease but at the same time, lack of an original type of vampire/zombie made this somewhat of a let down (e.g., garlic, invite them in, etc.). A lot just didn't make sense and honestly even seemed kind of silly. But it is an easy read and I did complete it through to the end.
Story: Katie prepares for Rumspringa with her best friend Elijah; it is a time she will get to experience the outside world and decide where she wants to be. But then the apocalypse happens and the Elders close the community down to prevent outside contamination. Katie learns that the world has devolved into vampirism but the Elders won't listen to her, claim the problem is random wolves, and even Elijah, who lost two brothers in an outside City, is trying to shut her down.

    Fair story with childish narration
This book is fair at best. It is written to sound like Sandlot, but not as well written. The narration sounds very childish and corny, almost like a poorly animated kids cartoon. All of my problems with this book and audio are related to the immature feel surrounding such serious subject matter. Though I may be older than the target audience. This would likely be a very enjoyable story and narration for a 9 to 12 year old.
    Memories - great memories
What made the experience of listening to Fallout the most enjoyable?
brought back so many memories of those days
What was one of the most memorable moments of Fallout?

    not or not yet
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Interesting
I love the concept of this book. I look forward to the next book, and getting to know the characters more.
    Unusual Metahuman Story
Where does Untouched: The Girl in the Box, Book 2 rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
About 6/10 of all the types of the audiobooks that I listened to so far.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The fight with the metahuman who was going to nuke Minneapolis. I think that they needed to build the characters more. There was a good portion of the book was on heroine's physical battles.
What does Annie Sullivan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I think the reader makes you think that she is actually the "girl in the box". Annie Sullivan read with emotion and feeling.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A tormented metahuman is out of control and must be stopped.
    Any additional comments?
It was an interesting story, It keeps your attention. It is better if you listen or read the first book.
    Again - X-Men(ish) and awesome
If you could sum up Untouched: The Girl in the Box, Book 2 in three words, what would they be?
    X-men
    Transformers
    Action packed
What was one of the most memorable moments of Untouched: The Girl in the Box, Book 2?
    Claire and Siena's fight.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Alexander's peaceful end.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Made me want to work out. LOL
    Any additional comments?
Just as great as Book 1.
The girl in the box 2
This second book took a complete twist from the first, had I known I would not have purchased it. Although it was well written, kept your attention, I found it to violent and did not appreciate the language. The characters were easy to follow but I gave a lower mark because as I said the violence was more than I choose to listen too.
    Untouched
Best thing about this was the very nerdy and very entertaining reference to comics, movies and tv shows.

A brilliant and gripping story line!
Thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narration. The writer could have used more descriptive and effective language and grammar, but overall the three books have you on the edge of your seat and enthralled.
    I enjoyed this book
this book is very good even though I'm in chapter 17 I really enjoy this right now I really recommend it to anyone who like a good story and enjoyed the maze runner trilogy
    Storyline a little weak
I found the two first books with a lot of unanswered questions, and I don't feel like the this book answered them all. But overall I don't regret buying the book, as it was almost as good as the two first books.
Loved it. The best of the series.
Without a doubt this was the best book in the series. It had everything you could want in a truly great and unique story and for once a happy ending. Gotta love a happy ending. To many stories these days have endings that leave me wandering why an earth I read books any more. It's for books like this that I continue to read.
    Fun but a little vague
The trials are over - or are they? WICKED wants to promote the surviving Gladers from guinea pigs to partners in the search to find a cure for the deadly flare. The Gladers are divided with many, Thomas included, struggling to believe that this really is the end. Are WICKEDs promises just another variable in the process and is the cure really within their grasp?
After the build up and intense action of the last two novels, I feel a little let-down with this installment. For at least three quarters of the book, I felt that there was no real purpose behind what the characters are doing. They had no plans and just seemed to be running around wherever chance would take them. The first two books in the series had clear objectives, and the characters James Dashner created were so driven, it felt very out of place to have them just going with the flow.
Some of the plot points also seemed so inconsistent. WICKED is such a technologically advanced entity, yet they dont have cameras in the rooms and a bunch of kids can overpower an entire battalion of security guards? They dont go after Thomas, even though they know where he is and they believe that the entire worlds fate depends on him? Some of the scenes also seemed cliched and contrived, especially those scenes with the rat man. I also felt that the novel lacked proper closure on some key points.
The ending was unexpected but satisfying. I love that Dashner didnt go with the obvious ending. There was a bit of a moral story in this series, which I enjoyed, and the end of the novel was fast-paced, imaginative and action-packed. Overall, still a fun series.
