Publisher's Summary:
When a bomb is left on reporter Kelly Sands' desk, she's determined to find out who wants her to stop reporting on corporate growth in rural Florida. The open threat thrusts Kelly back into the arms of her editor and former lover, Bart Stanley.
Together, the two begin to unravel the master plan of major developers who want to destroy the last vestiges of Florida's natural beauty. Tortoise Stew is a satire on political crime and Florida sensibilities.
A sometimes humorous, often harrowing, and never boring Florida suspense novel, Tortoise Stew contains a cast of characters who leave dead armadillos as calling cards, dynamite ponds as a way to fish, and carry guns under Santa Claus costumes during the annual Christmas parade.
The novel also addresses the ramifications of adoption after rape and the impact on both parents and children. All the while, the developers and environmentalists fling insults and intrigue as murder and fatal accidents bombard the small communities of rural north Florida.
As she investigates the plots building up, Kelly heads inside a mental institution for more ammunition. When it gets about as insane as it can get, the 2000 presidential election looms in the background providing a surreal quality to the antics of these characters.
Through it all, the steamy relationship between Kelly and Bart heats up as they rediscover what brought them together in the first place.
Fasten your seatbelts for one raucous ride through the quagmire of crazy characters befitting a novel set in Floridian politics.

Fighting Back
Kelly is shocked when she finds a bomb on her cluttered desk. Sheâs accustomed to reporting the newsâ not living it. Now, sheâs putting not just her life on the line to get the rest of the story.
If you like Tortoise Stew, then you should try Ms. Zickâs Native Lands. She adroitly captures the sights, sounds, and smells of tribal living in the 1760s. At the same time, she demonstrates political savvy with her insight into Florida politics. Ms. Zick also deftly and sensitively addresses social issues, including the environment and homelessness, without ever hopping up on a soapbox and preaching at the readers.
North Florida sizzles with the heat of love, lust
North Florida sizzles with the heat of love, lust, ambition, deceit and betrayal, not to mention the ever-present sun and humidity. In the story, layers of small town life are unpeeled to expose a rotten core, but also the seeds of good. Good ol' boy - and girl - politics is alive and well, and extends beyond the small towns in this county. I enjoyed this novel and look forward to reading more of Zick's work.
Best ever
This book was amazing with its twists and turns in the plot always keeping me on edge and wanting me to come back for more the issues brought up are very real world painful as they may be but the love always won out
Boring, don't bother reading
I only made it to page 33. A story about journalists that was written as if it was a newspaper article. It was not entertaining or interesting, so I stopped reading. Don't waste your time.
Good Mix!
This book is a good mix of romance and action! There are many threads to the storyline, but the author manages to bring them all together effectively!
