    Title: Ma'am Darling
Subtitle: 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret
    Author: Craig Brown
    Narrator: Eleanor Bron
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-21-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From our funniest writer, a portrait of our most talked-about royal.
She made John Lennon blush and Marlon Brando clam up. She cold-shouldered Princess Diana and humiliated Elizabeth Taylor.
Andy Warhol photographed her. Jack Nicholson offered her cocaine. Gore Vidal revered her. John Fowles hoped to keep her as his sex slave. Dudley Moore propositioned her. Francis Bacon heckled her. Peter Sellers was in love with her.
For Pablo Picasso, she was the object of sexual fantasy. 'If they knew what I had done in my dreams with your royal ladies,' he confided to a friend, 'they would take me to the Tower of London and chop off my head!'
Princess Margaret aroused passion and indignation in equal measures. To her friends she was witty and regal. To her enemies she was rude and demanding.
In her 1950s heyday, she was seen as one of the most glamorous and desirable women in the world. By the time of her death, she had come to personify disappointment. One friend said he had never known an unhappier woman.
The tale of Princess Margaret is pantomime as tragedy and tragedy as pantomime. It is Cinderella in reverse: hope dashed, happiness mislaid, life mishandled.
Combining interviews, parodies, dreams, parallel lives, diaries, announcements, lists, catalogues and essays, Ma'am Darling is a kaleidoscopic experiment in biography and a witty meditation on fame and art, snobbery and deference, bohemia and high society.
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for Craig Brown: "The amazing Craig Brown - the greatest satirist since Max Beerbohm." (Elaine Showalter)
"The wittiest writer in Britain today." (Stephen Fry)
"Every page is gold...genius." (Boris Johnson)

    La-di-da
Princess Margaret was a renowned beauty in her day, glamorous girl-about-town as a young woman and member of a raffish, pleasure-bent jet-set. As a royal, she took things to the edge and came to be the despair of the more traditional members of the royal family. Poorly educated and extremely spoiled by her indulgent father, perhaps because of his own miserable childhood, she became both difficult and demanding; her friends were expected to accept her arrogant and often selfish behaviour, which included cutting public put-downs. Acutely aware of being second best, always in the shadow of her sister, Queen Elizabeth, she made sure she too was treated as a queen everywhere she went and woe betide those who failed in this respect.
I found this book hugely entertaining, my one criticism being that the several what if
scenarios were an unnecessary distraction from this riveting story.
I think this book would appeal to women, mainly, and especially to those who remember the press furor over her broken engagement and subsequent, fateful marriage.
    Repugnant royal
This is fabulous! Read wonderfully by Eleanor Bron. I can't recommend this highly enough.
i will never look at those rubber sealed jars in the same way again.
    Over too quickly
Suffice to say - an excellent listen, ably assisted by Eleanor Bron. Her narration is, without question, the best i've ever heard on an audiobook.
    What a monster.
Fascinating look at Margaret R o se. What a monster she was but how ill served by her family and so called friends. Could have done without the whimsy marriage to Picasso, friendship with the Duke and Duchess of Wi indsor and what monsters they were too ,.

  • What Would Mary Ann Do? Audiobook by Dawn Wells, Steve Stinson

Title: What Would Mary Ann Do?
    Subtitle: A Guide to Life
    Author: Dawn Wells, Steve Stinson
    Narrator: Dawn Wells
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 9 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-20-17
    Publisher: Dawn Wells
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
So, what would Mary Ann do?
As the sweet, polite, and thoughtful Mary Ann Summers from Kansas in the hit series Gilligan's Island, Dawn Wells created an unforgettable and beloved character that still connects with people 50 years from the show's debut in 1964. As the "good girl" among the group of castaways on a tiny island, she was often positioned against the glamorous and exotic Ginger Grant, played by Tina Louise, prompting many to ask: Are you a Ginger or a Mary Ann?
This book, charmingly narrated by Dawn Wells herself, not only helps listeners answer that question for themselves but also sends the inspirational and heartwarming message that yes, good girls do finish first. Part self-help, part memoir, and part humor - with a little classic TV nostalgia for good measure - What Would Mary Ann Do? contains 12 chapters on everything from how Mary Ann would respond to changes in today's culture to addressing issues confronting single women and mothers. Wells brings along her fellow characters from Gilligan's Island to illustrate certain principles, such as incorporating the miserly Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) in a discussion on money. Anecdotal sidebars also describe fascinating facts and compelling memories from the show as well as some trivia questions to challenge fans and followers. This book provides inspiring lessons from TV's favorite good girl.

Dawn's new book is a great read and well worth any three hour trip!
Having grown up as one of the many latch key kids from the 1970s, Gilligan's Island and my favorite, Dawn Wells, hold a very strong, important place in my childhood. I purchased Dawn's Cookbook back in 1993, and enjoyed it a great deal, and have enjoyed reading Dawn's latest book - 'What Would Mary Ann Do?" I met Dawn a couple of years ago at a convention show in the Silicon Valley, and she was as charming, smart, level headed and lovely as any fan would have hoped for. A great conversationalist with a smart, quick wit and point of view. She mentioned at that time that she was working on this book, and worried a bit about the title that the publishers were considering- 'Why We Love Mary Ann.' Good to see that the book title was transformed to reflect the more advice-centric format of the book.
Dawn is Dawn, and Mary Ann, her characterization of the character that Sherwood Schwartz created, is very much a part of who Dawn was then, in 1964-1967. Dawn created the Mary Ann we all know and love, not the other way around. This book helps to imagine that, and explain why - what it is like being a celebrity, and going through life recognized as 'that woman on TV, Mary Ann.' There are moments in this book when the reader can see and feel 'the blessing and curse' that comes with fame and fortune (not necessarily in equal amounts.) Dawn deals with all this carefully and honestly in this book ... the image, the loves, the family, the triumphs, the disappointments and loss. The good things that happen to someone in a life, and the not so good. The fate of growing old, and doing it with dignity, hope and optimism. Finding one's happiness. Dawn tells all.
Dawn was and is 'the good daughter' - foremost in this book, I was impressed at the type of daughter Dawn is.

    Subtitle: My Life So Far

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-17
    Publisher: Penguin Books Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Unstoppable, the fiercely honest, fearless, darkly funny autobiography of global tennis star Maria Sharapova.
In the middle of the night, a father and his daughter step off a Greyhound bus in Florida and head straight to the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. They ring the bell, though no-one is expecting them and they don't speak English. They have arrived from Russia with just 700 dollars and the conviction that this six-year-old girl will be the world's next great tennis star. They are right.
This is Maria Sharapova's gripping and fearless autobiography, telling her story from her roots in the small Siberian town her parents fled to after the Chernobyl disaster, through her arrival in the US with nothing and her phenomenal rise to success - winning Wimbledon aged just 17 - to the disasters that threatened her career and her fight back.
Here the five-time Grand Slam winner gives us candid insights into her relationship with her father, who gave up his job and life in Russia to dedicate himself to his daughter; the truth behind her famous rivalry with Serena Williams; the injuries and suspension controversy that threatened to end it all; and her recent battle to get back on court.
Told with the same combative, no-holds-barred attitude as her game, it's a story of crazy luck, mistakes, rivalries, sacrifice, survival and, above all, the constant, unwavering determination to win.

Im not a tennis fan, but I couldnt put it down.
Enjoyed every minute of this book. It kept me up past bedtime. Even had me reaching for my phone, when my hands should have been on the steering wheel. And I wish shed write some more. If you enjoyed Ronda Rouseys book youll probably enjoy this too.
    Some of my favourite parts:
No one can be great everyday. Can you get it done on the ugly days when you feel like garbage and the tank is empty? ive been close to flawless on a few lucky afternoons, I can count them on one hand. But its usually a question of figuring out how to win with what ever Ive got. Theres so many matches I have won just by figuring out how to sneak by.
If you want to survive you have to have a short memory. Its important to remember but its more important to forget. Learn what you can and remember what youve learned. Its best just to forget.
    A wonderful honest book
I found it a great story I enjoyed every chapter when I began listening I just couldn't stop even though I have now heard it I will still buy the book to keep.
I wish Maria Sharapova everything good in the future and look forward to watching her play again and again.
    Loved it
Fascinating to hear her childhood experience and her fathers obsessive desire to be number one!
    Emotional
This book was everything Id hope to get from Masha, it was a perfect way to summarise what she has went through.
    A Grand Slam read!
This is such a fantastic book read superbly by Maria herself.
She tells of her very humble begining to her rise to super stardom and dealing with the doping episode. Maria doesn't big herself up in anyway and always stays grounded as her star rose rapidly.
I love that Maria is also the auditor, it feels so personal.
A great book and highly recommended.

Having watched John Saunders since he came to ESPN, I appreciated his skill and professionalism, but hearing the stories made me feel terrible. I have also been a long time fan of John U Bacon and his works. If you know or are suffering from depression I highly recommend this book. Amazing work

It will provide deep insight into the type of turmoil that people with depression have to deal with and how difficult it is to remain productive. Title: Jimmy Stewart: Bomber Pilot
    Author: Starr Smith, Walter Cronkite

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-08-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Of all the celebrities who served their country during World War II - and they were legion - Jimmy Stewart was unique. On December 7, when the attack on Pearl Harbor woke so many others to the reality of war, Stewart was already in uniform - as a private on guard duty south of San Francisco at the Army Air Corps Moffet Field. Seeing war on the horizon, Jimmy Stewart, at the height of his fame after Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and his Oscar-winning turn in The Philadelphia Story in 1940, had enlisted several months earlier.
Jimmy Stewart: Bomber Pilot chronicles his long journey to become a bomber pilot in combat. Author Starr Smith, the intelligence officer assigned to the movie star, recounts how Stewart's first battles were with the Air Corps high command, who insisted on keeping the naturally talented pilot out of harm's way as an instructor pilot for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. By 1944, however, Stewart managed to get assigned to a Liberator squadron that was deploying to England to join the mighty Eighth Air Force. Once in the thick of it, he rose to command his own squadron and flew 20 combat missions, including one to Berlin.
    Critic Reviews:
"Smith's clear admiration for Stewart comes through on every page, but with an understatement that even George Bailey could have lived with." (Publishers Weekly)

    Jimmy Stewart Bomber Pilot Review
    Jimmy Stewart: Bomber Pilot
This is a fantastic read! If you want to know what Jimmy Stewart the Bomber Pilot did during World War II this is the definitive book you should select. This is a well research book filled with personal anecdotes about Jimmy Stewart the World War II hero. I loved it! The book gave an insight into the personal history of Jimmy Stewart from his early days growing up in a small town in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Then going on to Hollywood, California and becoming a major box office star in great demand. All during this time his love for flying and flying was something he did every time he had an opportunity. Then in the early days of 1941 he realized that the United States would be in a global conflict so he left Hollywood to become a US Army Air Corps pilot. It was not easy for Jimmy Stewart because many at first thought that he was going to be a film star who had joined the service for publicity only. But for Jimmy Stewart this was not his way. Whatever he attempted he worked extremely hard to be the best. He was that and proved it with a real tough assignment with the Eighth Air Force in England. That is not where the story ends; no, there is much more but I invite you to read this book: âJimmy Stewart Bomber Pilot.â Starr Smith his biographer has written a great story shedding much light on Jimmy Stewartâs military career. Yes go ahead see for yourself that his legacy offers future generations what can be done and accomplish if you work really hard and take care of those you lead; an outstanding history of Jimmy Stewartâs life!
A book for fans that will leave them wanting.
This book purports to be a profile of American acting icon Jimmy Stewart's experiences as a bomber pilot in WWII. It turns out to be more of a series of the author's recollections and whatever he could find that, even remotely, related to Jimmy himself..

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Leo Durocher (1906-1991) was baseball's all-time leading cocky, flamboyant, and galvanizing character, casting a shadow across several eras, from the time of Babe Ruth to the Space Age Astrodome, from Prohibition through the Vietnam War. For more than 40 years, he was at the forefront of the game, with a Zelig-like ability to be present as a player or manager for some of the greatest teams and defining baseball moments of the 20th century. A rugged, combative shortstop and a three-time All-Star, he became a legendary manager, winning three pennants and a World Series in 1954.
Durocher performed on three main stages: New York, Chicago, and Hollywood. He entered from the wings, strode to where the lights were brightest, and then took a poke at anyone who tried to upstage him. On occasion he would share the limelight, but only with Hollywood friends such as actor Danny Kaye, tough guy and sometime roommate George Raft, Frank Sinatra, and his third wife, movie star Laraine Day.
As he did with Bill Veeck, Dickson explores Durocher's life and times through primary source materials, interviews with those who knew him, and original newspaper files.

    A throwback to another era
I was about eleven years old when Leo and his movie-star wife had a syndicated television program in which they talked to each other and guests. We watched it because my Dad hated Leo and would cuss at his image all through the show. Because of my age, I didnât get the show.
I didnât know he was a great-fielding shortstop nor did I know about his record as a manager.
After reading this, I admire his abilities but feel he is not someone I would want to be around. However, the book is written well and seems to explore all sides of his issues. I do remember many of the games and players that are discussed in the book. It was a good visit to the past.
For anyone who is a baseball fan, the book is worth the purchase. To others, I canât say.

This is a very well written account of the life of Leo Durocher, a man who was not universally loved but who could not be ignored due to his forceful personality. The author succeeds in giving us a picture of the inner Durocher, as well as presenting us with a factual narrative of his life. He was a complex man with theatrical abilities to make himself noticed, even when his baseball career was not going well. He was one of the pioneers of racial integration in the major leagues but, after taking Robinson in, did not treat him well.
Still, together with Casey Stengel, Durocher is one of the most colorful characters of baseball and reading this volume is a good way to get know the man in his multiple facets.
More that just lip about Leo Durocher
Interesting stories and tales about Leo Durocher that I never knew. Book would probably appeal more to those of the age that could remember the 1950 era of baseball. However even the young baseball fan would be able to read how many papers were in existence and how many writers were assigned to cover a major league team.
    I truly enjoyed the book
I grew up in the age of Leo the Lip and found him to be a most interesting, albeit obnoxious, national figure. So, I truly enjoyed the book. If it were only from my own narrow perspective I would give it a star higher rating but in terms of general interest not so much.

    Publisher's Summary:
There is a man blazing a trail across the silver screen, delivering performances of such electric intensity that he has united critics and casual moviegoers alike. That man is Tom Hardy.
Starring roles as Britain's most dangerous prisoner in Bronson, both Kray twins in Legend and the villainous brute Bane in The Dark Knight Rises have showcased his raw talent, edginess and ability to utterly inhabit his characters. He has also cemented his status as that rare thing: the man that women want and men want to be. His appeal is endless. But things weren't always so promising.
Cloistered in a life of suburban predictability, a teenage Tom began getting his thrills from drugs and petty crime. He made his first mark in the award-winning series Band of Brothers, but in 2003 Tom collapsed on the streets of Soho, brought low by drug abuse. Yet with the single-minded commitment that has come to characterise his acting performances, Tom banished his demons once and for all.
Now, with the title role in the long-awaited Mad Max: Fury Road under his belt and Hollywood at his feet, there is just no stopping this magnetic figure. This affectionate and in-depth biography reveals all the faces of Tom Hardy: the wayward boy he was, the driven professional he now is and the all-time legend he is sure to become.

    Good Intro
This is a very good compilation of all things Hardy. I strongly recommend it for those just now discovering the man's talent--and some good pix of eye candy! However, the two reviewers who criticized this book are probably fans of a few years back, and, to us, the info is not new. I bought it anyway. For newer fans you will find details of his personal life, his filmography (and awards), and exerpts from some good interviews. I think you'll enjoy This introduction to the man, the musician, the actor (stage and screen) and director. By now, the info is missing more current work but it's still a good summary.
    save your money
all this info was gleaned from the internet and nothing that I didn't know before. save your money. meh.
it was well written and organized. i would have preferred personal interviews to flesh out the story.
    Great read!!!
This is so well written and easy to read. I learnt so much about Tom Hardy, information that was not available on the Internet. He is without a doubt my favourite actor and he has a brilliant career ahead of him. Shall keep this on my bookshelf for years to come.
    Five Stars
    Interesting Read.
    Horrendous! Don't waste your money!
This book is horrible written. Everything in the book can be found in interviews, there is no original content. Whoever did the editing needs glasses, the first word is a typo!

    Publisher's Summary:
This audiobook is read by the author.
Risky Business. Revenge of the Nerds. Better Off Dead. Moonlighting. Supernatural. American Dad. New Girl. What do all of these movies and television shows have in common?
    Curtis Armstrong.
A legendary comedic second banana to a litany of major stars, Curtis is forever cemented in the public imagination as Booger from Revenge of the Nerds. A classically trained actor, Curtis began his incredible 40-year career onstage but progressed rapidly to film and television. He was typecast early, and it proved to be the best thing that could have happened.
But there's more to Curtis' story than that.
Born and bred a nerd, he spent his early years between Detroit, a city so nerdy that the word was coined there in 1951, and, improbably, Geneva, Switzerland. His adolescence and early adulthood were spent primarily between the covers of a book and indulging his nerdy obsessions. It was only when he found his true calling, as an actor and unintentional nerd icon, that he found true happiness. With whip-smart, self-effacing humor, Armstrong takes us on a most unlikely journey - one nerd's hilarious, often touching rise to the middle. He started his life as an outcast and matured into...well, an older, slightly paunchier, hopefully wiser outcast.
In Hollywood, as in life, that counts as winning the game.

What did you like best about this story?
Thorough coverage of a solid career
    Any additional comments?
Curtis is sharp, articulate and I really enjoyed the book.
    Enlightened
Curtis Armstrong has enlightened this nerds view of his favorite nerd Booger. Way to go you supernatural king.
    Excellent listen!
Curtis has always been the oddball in his movies. I mean seriously, Charles Demar.... One of the strangest, and greatest, characters ever. This book reinforces the fact that in order to look THAT strange on film, your craft has to be THAT good. Curtis IS that good, and his story is very compelling.
    So worth it
It started out kind of slow but you still couldn't put it down. As he progressed through his 40-year acting career I became absolutely riveted. This book does a good job of painting what I feel is a more accurate picture of Hollywood.
I strongly suspect that the author omitted certain areas of his life and experiences while not doing so for other actors or actresses with whom he had worked, specifically in the area of infidelity. The author was incredibly honest about his drug use which was quite refreshing. If you're looking for a memoir that tries to pass drug use off as "I never inhaled" this is not the book for you.
I loved that this author was a nerd growing up. I actually never thought it was possible for someone to accurately play themselves, but in so many cases this is precisely what the author was able to pull off.
I also really like the author is classically trained. He conquered Hollywood the old fashion way. He worked for it.
I absolutely love the fact that this book is read by the author. It's like listening to a long motivational course given by none other than Charles De Mar.
Worth the money and worth the time.
    Better than excellent.
What a surprisingly charming, warm, funny, enlightening, honest and interesting book! Curtis Armstrong has made me a true fan of him as a human being.

A biased Love story of a Journalist and Mourinho
Great if your a chelsea fan and love a biased view of a lot of Chelsea "incidents", more of a vomit inducing love story between the author and Mourinho/Chelsea
