    Publisher's Summary:
Dark, witty, and suspenseful, this literary crime thriller reminiscent of The Dinner and The Silent Wife follows a famous author whose wife - the brains behind his success - meets an untimely death, leaving him to deal with the consequences.
"Evil is a matter of opinion."
On the surface Henry Hayden seems like someone you could like or even admire. A famous, best-selling author who appears a modest everyman. A loving, devoted husband even though he could have any woman he desires. A generous friend and coworker. But Henry Hayden is a construction, a mask. His past is a secret, his methods more so. No one besides him and his wife know that she is the actual writer of the novels that made him famous.
For most of Henry's life, it hasn't been a problem. But when his hidden-in-plain-sight mistress becomes pregnant and his carefully constructed facade is about to crumble, he tries to find a permanent solution only to make a terrible mistake.
Now not only are the police after Henry, but his past - which he has painstakingly kept hidden - threatens to catch up with him as well. Henry is an ingenious man, and he works out an ingenious plan. He weaves lies, truths, and half truths into a story that might help him survive. But bit by bit the noose still tightens.
Smart, sardonic, and instantly gripping, here is the story of a man whose cunning allows him to evade the consequences of his every action, even when he's standing on the edge of the abyss.

    Wrong Narrator?
Intriguing book full of dark comedy which was muted by the Audio production.
I think Corey Brill is a talented narrator who just wasn't right for this book. He read the book, prose and characters, with an American accent and while stylistically he was excellent, it stripped some of the atmosphere from the book and often pulled me out of the story.
I don't blame the narrator but the seeming production decision that American's would prefer European novels if they were presented as if they took place in Akron.
    Intriguing listen
This story held my attention all the way through. I like the pace of this book, the twists and I am really relieved about the ending. No spoilers-well worth my time and money!
    Beautiful writing
A dark comedy of errors, told beautifully. Like other reviewers I wonder at the choice of narrators since the protagonist is an Englishman. And yet, Mr. Brill's tone is pitch-perfect. How can people fall for this base, evil guy?...and yet, you almost do yourself. While there were some aspects of the plot that left me hanging, I can't wait for another novel from this author.
    Beautifully written
Very engaging storytelling with an interesting twist on an individual's "truths". I enjoyed it a lot.
    Odd
This book was hard to follow. The back and forth story line was not my favorite.

    Publisher's Summary:
On Sept. 29, 1869, the gold market crumbles, and fortunes are lost in a matter of hours. When the bodies of two men, wealthy Boston Brahmins Noah Bassett and Philip Munro, are found, it's assumed that they committed suicide over their financial losses.
When Harvard professor and forensic scientist Will Hewitt autopsies the victims, he discovers that Munro was murdered. Dr. Hewitt needs help navigating the city and its complex society to find the killer. He turns to governess Nell Sweeney, who understands the world of the rich and how their power can be used to hide their secrets. The investigation leads to the conclusion that these men were concerned more with keeping some things hidden than with the loss of their money. How they were tied together makes for a chilling climax to a mesmerizing mystery.
    Critic Reviews:
"Not only does Ryan provide readers with a tightly wound, suspenseful novel peopled with multidimensional characters, she writes about an era whose problems mirror our own. This is a historical period she knows and brings to life so clearly that readers are totally immersed. Nell is an ideal heroine: smart, intrepid and human. Be on the lookout for her return." (Romantic Times BookReviews) "Nell and Will are a confirmed pair of amateur sleuths in this fourth entry in the popular Gilded Age series, and this makes the setting perhaps slightly cozier, but as usual, P B Ryan is spot on with her period detail. This is the best part about the series for me, as these books really do open a window into how both the high and low society of Boston operated. She thankfully doesn't shrink (Anne Perry style) from showing it, warts and all...probably the best entry yet." (MyShelf.com )"As always, Nell and Will's predicament tugs at my heart. Loved it!"( Babbling Book Reviews )"The author has an amazing grasp of life during this period of history. Each detail is crafted to let the reader feel immersed in the time; from the major historical events, to the minutiae of everyday life. These facts are effortlessly woven into the overall narrative." (The Romance Reader's Connection)

1869 Gold Crash, the Haves and the Have Nots
Probably the best so far in the series, book four, brings Will and Nell together to investigate the death of two prominent Boston men . . . Noah Bassett and Philip Munro . . . Will, now having taken a job at Harvard as a forensic scientist and professor, has done the autopsies and is not satisfied that they did indeed kill themselves over the gold crash and loss of their fortunes . . . on first blush, the two men do not appear to be connected . . . but upon further investigation, Will and Nell find that the two families are joined in more ways than one . . . Noah, an old friend of Viola's, Will's mother, was a kind and gentle man, the father of two grown daughters, had become a rather sad and depressed man over the years, particularly since the loss of his son in the war and then his wife to cancer . . . Philip Munro was a financial adviser . . . flush with money . . . and forever on the lookout to enter the world of "old Boston money" and society, which theretofore had rejected him . . . a good friend with Will Hewitt's younger brother, Harry, Philip and Harry were birds of a feather . . . drinkers and carousers . . .

    Publisher's Summary:
Cesare Cardinale is an amoral, aristocratic Italian playboy - an entrepreneur and race car driver who wants for nothing - whether it's fast cars, beautiful women, or orgies of debauchery. Cesare, however, has two dirty secrets: First, he has a penchant for violence that borders on the sadistic and sociopathic; second, he owes his extravagant life to a Sicilian Mafia don, creating a seemingly perfect relationship - as he leads a double life as a Mafia assassin. But when Cesare is ordered to murder four U.S. government witnesses in protective custody, he attracts the attention of a mysterious special agent who will stop at nothing to bring the crime syndicate down.
Soon Cesare is engaged in a lethal game of cat-and-mouse against both an adversary who is more than his match, as he understands what makes Cesare tick, and the Mafia, who fears he might talk.
From the author of The New York Times number one best-selling novel The Carpetbaggers comes a story about the Mafia, written when American leaders like J. Edgar Hoover were still skeptical about the existence of an Italian-American organized crime network or the Cosa Nostra. Published a decade earlier, this novel inspired books like Mario Puzo's The Godfather and helped ignite American pop culture's insatiable fascination with the Mafia that continues today.

Ideally spooky Halloween listening.... A chilling ghost story by the author of The Woman in Black.
One murky November evening after a satisfying meal in their Fleet Street lodgings, a conversation between four medical students takes a curious turn and Hugh is initiated into a dark secret. In the cellar of their narrow lodgings in Printer's Devil Court and a little used mortuary in a subterranean annex of the hospital, they have begun to interfere with death itself, in shadowy experiments beyond the realms of medical ethics. They call on Hugh to witness an event both extraordinary and terrifying.
Years later, Hugh has occasion to return to his student digs and the familiar surroundings resurrect peculiar and unpleasant memories of these unnatural events, the true horror of which only slowly becomes apparent.
Susan Hill is a prize-winning novelist, having been awarded the Whitbread, Somerset Maugham and John Llewelyn Rhys awards, as well as having been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She wrote Mrs de Winter, the best-selling sequel to Rebecca, and the ghost story The Woman in Black, which was adapted for the stage and became a great success in the West End.
Her books include a collection of exquisite short stories, The Boy Who Taught the Beekeeper to Read, and the highly successful crime novel series about the detective Simon Serrailler. Susan Hill lives in Gloucestershire, where she runs her own small publishing firm, Long Barn Books.

    Spooky but short
An entertaining dip into the macabre. The moral of the story is NOT to mess with dead people. Medical students, beware!
    Victoria sponge...
    Any additional comments?
A young medical student has taken rooms in Printer's Devil Court in London, sharing them with three other medical men. One evening, the four men have a discussion as to whether the story of Lazarus could possibly have been true is it scientifically possible to bring someone back from the dead? Two of the men hint that they have been carrying out experiments on the subject and ask Meredith and the fourth man if they would like to join in. The fourth man considers the whole idea to be blasphemous and refuses, but Meredith's curiosity wins out, and he agrees to be a witness to the experiments a decision he will regret for the rest of his life.
Susan Hill has written this very much in the style of a Victorian ghost story although it's set in the 20th century. It feels very much like working to a recipe...
1 notebook revealing a terrible secret
    1 creepy street name
    4 medical students
2 or 3 graveyards to taste
    2 corpses
1 late night adventure in a mortuary
1 man racked by conscience and haunted for the rest of his life
Mix all together with a wooden spoon until smooth, and bake for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Unfortunately, the resulting cake is somewhat bland a Victoria sponge without the jam perhaps. One feels that a vital ingredient has been forgotten...
1 generous splash of essence of horror
The quality of the writing and storytelling is quite high it's just that it's a story we've all heard so often in various forms and Hill brings nothing new to the recipe. I felt she was so busily ensuring that she got it to sound authentically Victorian, which she succeeds in doing very well, that she lost sight somewhat of the fact that a ghost story ought to be scary, and in order to be scary it must have some element of unpredictability.

"It's just to say that no one has come to pick Nathan up from school, and we were wondering if there was a problem of some kind?"
As Mark Douglas photographs a pod of whales stranded in the waters off Edinburgh's Portobello Beach, he is called by his son's school: his wife, Lauren, hasn't turned up to collect their son. Critic Reviews:
"Excellent ...sharp and moving." (The Times)

    Great Listen
"Page" turner. I was totally engaged with the characters. This will keep your attention.
    Edinburgh raw
This author us new to me. I loved the story line and the relationship between the protagonist and his six year-old son. Some if the violence seemed overdone, but I was kept in thrall to the beautiful, lilting Scots of Angus King's narration.
    ugg!! Deplorable language
Language is deplorable. Absolutely no reason for all the "F" bombs.
The British accent was so heavy at times, I couldn't understand .
I listened for about 2hours. .marked it as read and deleting it from my phone
    Good read
Good story. Angus King was a great narrator made the story come to life. sad that the wife passed away leaving the husband and child. but i think they will do alright in the end. Thank you!
    Not a Nail-biter, But Good
The narrator did a good job of changing moods and voices to portray different characters. I had the villains figured out early on, as well as the motive for murder, but there was a twist I had not contemplated. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

    Boring, predictable plot, annoying narration
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Not sure - I really didn't care for any part of it - but was just curious enough to see if I had the ending right that I needed to finish it. I did have it right.
Would you ever listen to anything by Vincent Zandri again?
    nope
How did the narrator detract from the book?
really annoying voice, semi hysterical. Should have listened before buying.
    Good story amazing read performance!
I liked the story but thoroughly enjoyed listening to the guy that read it. He made the book come alive with his performance. I will be looking for more audio books read by him.
    This story is just ok.
I got it for free on amazon and paid $1.99 to upgrade to audio. I'm glad I didn't pay more. The story was not the best, seemed fairly amature. The voices from the actor were really annoying. I struggled to finish the book, yet I stuck with it. ...hoping it would redeem itself.
    Fire, fire, fire
During the first half of the story there was a bit of over repetition of the verse regarding fire and his childhood 'fire' background/experiences, luckily it stopped just at the point of irritation. After that the story moved along at a quick pace with several twists and turns. The ending is well done, the wording was very descriptive evoking great imagery.
This was my first experience with this author, I will definitely try other novels.
    The narrating was good.
    ilove Vincent Zandri books.
they are different from other thrillers. they keep you guessing till the end and it's hard to put the book down wondering what is next.

Enjoyable, but not worth repeating the experience
What did you like best about 19 Purchase Street? What did you like least?
Apart from the ending, which was truly pathetic on a par with... 'and they woke up to find it was all a dream!'..., plus the constant, boring reference to money, this was an enjoyable story.
What three words best describe Charles Constants voice?
Annoying, annoying, annoying. He really can't pronounce English words properly, even allowing for his American pronounciation!
Was 19 Purchase Street worth the listening time?
    Yes - ish.

    Members Reviews:
Bert the Shirt returns! And with Giovanni, too!
Would you listen to Shot on Location again? Why?
I absolutely would, and will. I look forward to every new book by Lawrence Shames. This guy will make you laugh under any circumstance you might be in, no matter how dark or gloomy. I guarantee satisfaction. All his books are set in Key West, which has to be where Mr. Shames lives. He describes it beautifully. The main character is typically a New Yorker. The Mob is always involved. Some of the characters are continuing. Bert the Shirt is my favorite. Bert is now a very old ex-mobster who wears exquisitely tailored shirts, and who carries around his tiny, sickly Mexican Chihuahua everywhere. Richard Ferrone is also an excellent narrator, delivering each chuckle and smile with expert timing and great accents. The plots are all variations on a theme, but somehow Mr. Shames makes them fresh. He does not repeat the jokes, which, when you think about it, after five or six novels set in the same place, is quite an achievement. There is a plot, which is not just an excuse for the humor. Each time I read one of Mr. Shames's books I feel like I have taken a small vacation in Key West. I don't believe I'd like the humidity, but everything else about the place sounds like paradise.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Shot on Location?
I love the romantic scenes between Jake, the main character, and like Shames an ex-New Yorker who is a writer, and Claire, who is an executive and all-around gofer for a TV program which is aptly called Adrift. Shames can write romance in a gentle way, giving us the small details which ring so true. I liked best the restaurant scene in which Claire and Jake share a tiramisu with a slice of mango. At just the exact same moment, the two put their forks into the dessert, and the tines touch in a small but electric way. I obviously can't write like Mr. Shames does, but read it for yourself. He is a charming and witty guy.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I think I just answered that question. There are many of them. One comes very early in the book, and sets up the whole plot, and I won't ruin it for you.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I can't do that. It would involve sitting in one place, or lying down, and devoting all of my attention for many hours.

    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Detective Jason Strong novella
The 16 book Jason Strong series includes one dozen 5 star suspense mystery novellas. For My Brother is excellent but does not earn 5 stars.
Good story, didn't care for the reader...
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend the book itself, but not the audible version. The reader's breathy unnatural tone and the way he spat out many of the words was annoying. His characterization of Det. Strong made him sound like a grumpy curmudgeon. I got the feeling the reader was trying to emulate the late great Frank Muller, but didn't pull it off.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Parts of the plot were similar to previous book, but it was good and suspenseful.
How could the performance have been better?
A different reader would have made the book much more enjoyable to listen to; his tone and inflections were distracting from the book itself.
Do you think For My Brother needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
    Perhaps with a different reader.
    Any additional comments?
I really love the way the author writes - no obscenities or graphic descriptions of sex or violence, demonstrating that, indeed, those things are not necessary to good storytelling!
    Tragic detective story
If you could sum up For My Brother in three words, what would they be?
    TRAGIC, SUSPENSE,TAUT
What did you like best about this story?
The ending, was very sad but had to be.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Jason Strong at the police station being pushed around by his boss
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I could have listened to it in one setting but it was too long. If I stopped, I could not wait toget back to it.
    Any additional comments?
The book was well written for a short dective story and the narrator did a good job of giving the characters some life.
    ANOTHER JASON STRONG STORY
Would you consider the audio edition of For My Brother to be better than the print version?
I only listen to audio books, so yes I would consider the audio book better.
What did you like best about this story?
It was over quickly, one trip to work and there was no bad langue in the book.
What about Joshua Benningtons performance did you like?
Joshua Benningtons read was good, I could listen to him all day.
    Any additional comments?
    I would recommend the book.
    Detective Story
If you could sum up For My Brother in three words, what would they be?
    clean detective story
Who was your favorite character and why?
Donnie, the whole story circles around him
What does Joshua Bennington bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He gave it a good read and gave the character a personality.
    Any additional comments?
It was a good book, not great but good with a even better reader.

    Publisher's Summary:
When quiet Ellen Lang enters Elvis Cole's Disney-deco office, she's lost something very valuable - her husband and young son. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn't thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike.
Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood's studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it's also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.
    Members Reviews:
good story but a little dated.
I am new to the author Robert Crais, although he has been writing for years. after reading a recent book I decided to go back to the first in the series. This is a good story but a little dated, hence 4 stars.
    Good book.
Not quite the same feel as some of crais books. Still a good listen though, interesting story. Not hugely keen on the narrator.
Stay with it, slow start leads to much more
Keep going, that's the way forward. Great story, the first of many. Ignore the negative reviews, they obviously have no patience!
    Could not hold my attention
struggled for a few hours and gave up really did not like it and returned it
Gave up before the end of chapter one
I bought this because I'd enjoyed Crais' "Suspect". This book is much earlier. I found the writing slow and clichéd and the narration uninspired.. I tried hard to make it to the end of the first chapter but my interest and patience were snuffed out long before then
