Love this My Readers series
Love, love it! This is a great series for any child who loves animals and teaches about kindness of others.
Good Story
George Seldon and Garth Williams wrote this series of books, this one originally titled,The Cricket in Time Square. The cricket has been changed by the author of this version Thea Feldman to a mouse.
This would be the next step up for children even being read the story because it attempts to keep their interest longer not being in small chapter form.
My preschooler who has usually a pretty good attention span, could not seem to be interested through the whole book. Perhaps if a child were older they would follow the story better
A shoeshine booth or store would not really resonate with small children because in most places they don't exist.
This is a nice story of friendship by the cat to get his friend, the mouse out of trouble. Although well written and a good message it just doesn't jump out at children early enough in the story to keep their interest, and a book keeping a childs interest is the key to delivering the message quick enough before interest is lost .It's a good story but if for small children not one their likely to remember.
Terrific story about friendship
My son was almost 2 when we discovered this book on our local library's table and checked it out. He loves the pictures of Harry, Tucker and the subway station. It's a long book for his age, but we were able to get through it most times we read it and we'll soon be getting our own copy. Children a year or 2 older I think will also love it as will beginning readers. It's a terrific story about friendship-- our babysitter said she cried when she read it to our son. It's based the original Cricket in Times Square by a different author -- if that's half as good as this, that's worth getting too. Harry to the Rescue is a little longer and is also great.

good easy reader
If you have read the Cricket in Times square you are familiar with Tucker and Harry! They are a cat and mouse that are an unlikely pair of friends. It's part of the My Readers collection for early readers. I think that this book would make a great lead in to introduce kids to the longer chapter book in which they can learn more about these characters!
