Hachiko Waits

This is one of the most heartfelt true stories ever written. I saw the American made movie Hachi, and fell in love with the story. I did some research to find it was based on a Japanese dog, an Akita, named Hachiko, who faithfully waited at the Shibuya Station in Tokyo for his master who had died, and is a legend in Japan. There is a statue of Hachiko, which stands at the site where Hachiko waited for ten years for the return of his master.

The best and must see movie, it can make you cry easily

Wonderful story!!!!

I bought this book for my 23 y.o. daughter who loves animals and reading. After seeing the recent release "Hachi ~ A Dog's Story" starring Richard Gere....I knew she would love this book. She read the book first....then saw the movie. The book is set in Japan, where the actual events took place. She could really picture the characters....Hachi, The Professor, etc. by the authors descriptive verse. Although the movie is set in the USA and brought to modern times, the story....absolutely true...is hard to believe. The loyalty of this beautiful Akita dog is a real wonder. Very inspiring and a must read (and see) for the animal lover.

Wonderful Educational Tool

Wonderful, poignant story. Teaches true love, devotion, and introduces Japanese culture to young children. A great educational tool, just right for 4th graders. My students were so taken by it that they requested to see pictures of Hachi's statue at Shibuya station.

My 12 year old read this in one evening!!!

Beautiful story every young man and young lady should read. Touching and endearing, this story teaches loyalty and compassion. We got the book before purchasing the movie. I prefer to do both. The movie was great also, but there's something that penetrates just a little bit deeper when you spend a quiet evening with a book. A must read actually for all ages. Enjoy something simple and sweet for a change!!!

Excellent & Magic

Yes the Little Matchstick Girl caught my heartstrings one Christmas morning as I sat surrounded by my loving family in my warm sitting room

opening an abundance of Christmas presents & there on screen was a beautiful small child with no shoes on her feet & no coat to keep warm as she stood in the freezing cold snow waiting for a customer to buy her matches. All presents forgotten as I watched in awe as this little girl lit match after match to light up her dreams to be with her loved ones.

I felt so lucky & so loved. Thousands of children lived like her up to the early 1900's.

A well read story that will warm your heart.

Awful narration!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator's voice needs to be deleted and re-recorded with someone else at the helm.

This sounds like it's being read out by a computer! I can't stand it! My children won't entrain listening to it but I've had it too long to ask for a refund now. It's awful!

We listened to this as a family on a long trip from London to Scotland. We are two boys (12 and 10), a girl (7), plus Mum and Dad. Comments from the family: A brilliant story to listen with the family (7year old); A great, exciting story, full of surprises. I really liked it. (10 year old): I really enjoyed it and am glad I listened to it, even though I found it a little slow on n the middle. Its also really really well read. (12 yr old); Beautifully written with lovely rich language and wonderful positive messages. (Dad); Wonderfully old fashioned, wholesome family read. A little predictable but who cares! Its got all the ingredients of a great story - a loveable heroine, an evil adversary, joys and great losses restored by a happy endingWe all loved it and it provided much food for conversation - especially around the rich vocabulary. We love the Berenstain Bears!

Every Berenstain Bears book we get becomes a favorite for a little while, and this one is no different. My daughter has even learned the "wishing rhyme" (Star light, Star bright...) and says it along with me. These books are all so good and uplifting for kids, teaching them a valuable lesson in a nice, short story.

What can anyone say about the Berenstain Bears that has not already been said. They are always a joy. As a former pre-school teacher I know how the children enjoy the books, now I am buying the books for my grandchildren so that they too may enjoy the mis-adventures.

My three and a half year old loves this book! We read it together on our kindle fire hd. Great story.

Engaging and illustrated early reader series

Though this series of An I Can Read Book is labeled as a Level 1 Beginning Reading Book, I felt that it is more of a Level 2 book because of some of the higher vocabulary used. My daughter is five-and-a-half and will start kindergarten this fall, and we both felt that these books were a step up from other level one books, for example the Step Into Reading series. Though she was able to read this book independently, I just feel parents should be aware that this book has some advanced vocabulary and more complex sentence structures which beginning readers might have some difficulty with, e.g.:

"Mama picked up the baby chipmunk and tucked him into Papa's hanky."

"Then one day, he explored one place too many."

"Outside," said Mama, "Brown Eyes will be able to explore all of nature."

The books in the series have engaging storylines and each page has beautiful full-color illustrations. This particular story tells of how the cubs find a baby chipmunk and care for him before finally returning him to the wild. This is an excellent series that will motivate young children to read.

I bought 2 copies of this or my neighbors son Emmanuel who is 5, and one for my friend Jackie's grandson Tyler who is 6, and they loved them. I read it myself. What a cute story. A great book for kids.

Great lesson for animal lovers!

I loved this book because it teaches kids the valuable lesson of letting animals go back into nature. I remember the feeling of wanting to take in every animal that came my way, but after a while we realize that the animal (chipmunk) is ready to explore the world, it can be set free.

Once, again the Berenstains really articulate the lesson well to a beginner audience.

Buy it as a souvenier for the kids before you go and save $

This book is cute - I bouht it to supplement a recent trip to the aquarium.

Advide: buy this book before you go & give it to you child as a souvenier, this way you can save $ by not buying an expensive book from the gift shop.

The story is ok, and they refernce many sea creatutres that you could see at a very large aquarium, but most aquariums will not have nearly as many animals as are in this book (dolphins, whales)

My granddaughter is totally obsessed with the Berenstains. This one is intended to be more of an early reader. There are few words which is great because she makes us read the books 30 times each. It's a very nice story of a trip to the Aquarium.

Gotta read this one!

Don't miss the Hank the Cowdog series! You don't have to be from Texas to enjoy this highly entertaining author and his hilarious stories about the "Head of Ranch Security", Hank the Cowdog. You don't even have to be from the country! I sent some of these to my friends' kids in the northern states, also, and they were begging for more! Intended for children and young adults, but great for the young-at-heart also! You can't help but laugh out loud at the antics!

Compare Hank to Barney Fife

Love these books & Erickson's writing. Hank reminds me so much of some people I know. You could compare him with Barney Fife.

Good ole Hank

A mother told me her son hated to read. I gave him a copy of the first book in the Hank the Cow Dog series. He read the entire book that night, then the entire series. Hank has open the world of books to that young lad. Highly recommended.

This Hank the cowdog was different from the rest because of the visitor Happy Lab. He brings a twist to this book by messing up the ranch.

Fantastic book, poor audio.

She was the main narrator, but there were kids and others with small roles.

There are several things that should be changed. It is wonderful if you are following along with the book and listening at the same time. I listen to it in the car with my children, and this is problematic.

1. The audio is rushed. For example, when questions are asked that require a response, pause just a bit to give time for the parent to stop the playback. That is just one area. There are many times like that where there is not time to really think about anything or even time to pause before the narrator goes on to the next sentence or topic. There's hardly time to realize that a new section has been entered. Like a long run on paragraph when in fact there are several sections. There are also Bible verses being read, but again, they are just bundled so fast into whatever is bracketing them, that there is no time to pause or reflect.

2. The quality is tinny in places and hard to hear. There are times when music is being played in the background while the narrator is reading, and you must strain your ears to hear what is being said. I have tried to adjust this by using 'spoken word' or 'vocal booster', but it hasn't seemed to work.

3. This is a sad part but needs to be said. There is a young man who plays a part in the short stories in the book. His story reading is not good. It is very mechanical, slow, and distracting. There is also a short story where the characters have evil voices and other accents and it is so poorly done that you cannot understand what is being said.

Besides all that, this book is really wonderful. I love the way it teaches anyone to stand on the Rock-God's Word. For that reason alone, we will power through all the audio issues. So, as car ride material, this is not a great option.
