    A Strong 2nd Volume of a Trilogy
This is a great example of a 2nd book in a trilogy, and it does what it does very well. If youre already a fan of the author or the series, dont hesitate to pick this up. Youll reconnect with lots of old friends and meet a few new ones.
To the new reader/listener, you might wonder what the fuss is. Heres the deal. This is the 2nd volume of a story set in the same world as The Horse Mistress several years later, and many of the same characters appear. You do not have to read the full The Horse Mistress series to enjoy this new trilogy in the making, but youd get a richer understanding of everything thats going on.
This fantasy setting is similar to Britain in the time of the Druids if they would have been successful at keeping the Romans at bay. Kathriel, a former slave and prostitute, is determined to lead a slave revolt, and her lovers Ithric (a lion shape shifter) and Favian (an asexual eunuch priest) are there to help her every step of the way.
Does that love combination sound crazy? It shouldnt. One of the things Steffan excels at writing is a polyamorous trio where the three members feel like equals who absolutely need each other. Its not as shallow as a fleeting lusty attraction. That is not to say that there arent inventive sex scenes because there are (though less than in other volumes), but the sex scenes always serve to move the plot and the characters forward. I have never been able to make that comment about another author, and it still surprises me.
As a second book, the characters spend a lot of time working on their skills in self-defense and for their cover as traveling entertainers. Much time was spent on this, but it didnt seem like wasted time in the story. Favian had his issued to work through while they were skill building, and later Kathriel went through a dark time of doubt over if she was truly doing the right thing.
At the end of the story, they have rescued one very important slave, and the last scene is fantastic as one to prepare the reader for the next book. It promises to contain the full on uprising that has been promised, with the trio being their best selves as they choose to lead the way.
For a favorite moment in the story, I would say that it was a small one when Favian gave a true priests blessing to two urchins in Ryth. On the other side of the story, there was a big lack of Carivel in this one.

  • Dragon Lore (4 Book Series) Audiobook by Ann Gimpel

Title: Dragon Lore (4 Book Series)
    Author: Ann Gimpel
    Narrator: A. W. Miller
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 29 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-20-17
    Publisher: Ann Gimpel Books, LLC
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 14 votes
    Genres: Romance, Fantasy
    Publisher's Summary:
Contains the full, unabridged Dragon Lore series, full of myth, magic, dragon shifters, and the Scottish Highlands.
    Highland Secrets:
Furious and weary, Angus Shea wants out, but no matter how he feels, he can't stop the magic powering his visions. The Celts kidnapped him when he wasn't much more than a boy and forced him to do their bidding. He's sick of them and their endless assignments, but they wiped his memories, and he has no idea where he came from.
    To Love a Highland Dragon:
A dragon shifter stirs and wakens in a cave beneath Inverness, deep in the Scottish Highlands. The cave's the same and his hoard intact, yet something's badly amiss. Determined to set whatever's gone wrong to rights, Lachlan Moncrieffe ventures above ground - and wishes he hadn't. His castle's gone, replaced by ungainly row houses. Men aren't wearing plaids, and women scarcely wear anything at all, particularly the woman who accosts him with unseemly banter. What manner of wench is she to dress so provocatively?
    Dragon Maid:
When pressed, Jonathan Shea admits magic runs through his blood, but he's always been ambivalent about it - until a dragon and her mage show up in the Scottish Highlands, and then all bets are off. Jonathan's charmed and captivated by the dragon - a creature fresh out of myth and legend - but the woman bonded to it is so enticing, he tosses caution aside and catapults into the magical power he's avoided for so long.
    Dragon's Dare:
Bloated on chaos, the Morrigan leaves the Scottish Highlands to gather power. A trip through Hell yields quite the assortment of allies tagging along behind her. Fell creatures straight out of myth and nightmare that haven't darkened Earth's boundaries for centuries heed her call.

    Pantheon Gods and Dragons
This was a fabulous series of books. If you enjoy epic tales of dragons and gods you are in the right place. All four stories weave together a cast of characters that are amazing. Book two was my favorite as the story of Lachlan and Maggie hooked me from the very beginning. I loved the humorous asides from Lachlan about how a Scottish Lord would view the future. Maggie's natural and modern reticence to their instant and steamy connection made their relationship more believable. Book four was the icing on the cake for me. All of the characters reunite to divert certain disaster caused by the Morrigan. The narrator was first class! There was no awkwardness going between male and female dialogue. If you love stories about dragons, witches, gods, and magic you will love this series!
    Actual storyline
This was a very intricate well done story. I love dragons and I especially love the way these stories were so well connected with a common goal. I enjoyed it
An exciting series of destiny, war, dragons, mages, witchcraft, & steaminess!
I highly recommend this series by Ann Gimpel!!
I have just recently found her audiobooks & I quickly became addicted to the tales she weaves. Her worlds are full of action, drama, magic. *Her books are not for the younger crowd as all of them I have bought so far contain many sex scenes.
This series is of destiny, war, dragons, mages, witchcraft, & steaminess all in one. So much to tell & yet I dont want to ruin it for you. This journey takes us along the travels & battles of many magical beings & their mates across many worlds & dimensions.

    Publisher's Summary:
    A Being(s) in Love Story
David is in love with Tulip, a kind and unusually quiet fairy in his social circle. But everyone knows Tulip doesn't date humans. David tells himself he is happy to be Tulip's friend, because he doesn't believe a fairy could love him and Tulip has never tried to "keep him" - as fairies refer to relationships with humans.
Fairies are drawn to David, describing his great "shine", but David knows only too well how quickly fairies can forget humans, and thinks he's destined to be alone. He can't see his own brilliance or understand how desperately Tulip wants him, even if Tulip believes David can do better.
But exhausted and more than a little tipsy at a Christmas party, David makes his feelings too obvious for Tulip to deny any longer. Because of a past heartbreak involving a human, Tulip is convinced someone as shiny as David could never want a "silly, stupid fairy" in his life. Now, if he wants to keep David, he'll have to be as brave as his shiny, careful human.

    it is worth it
the story is so much love in it i like it a lot because of the people in it and that you see some of the other people from the other books it is so wrth it
    For fans of the series
I have enjoyed a couple of the books in this series, but I think in general - that R Coopers writing style just isnt for me. Or at least in audio format Im not sure if that would have made a difference but listening to this just made me confused for a lot of the time.
On the one hand I really enjoyed the set up post doc fairies are part of society but not David is the clueless human who attracts fairies but doesnt realize it But there were all these love triangles that confused me and made me frustrated.
I was also sick to death of Davids morose view of himself by the end. When two characters simply need a long discussion to settle things between them The Big Misunderstanding it makes me crazy- I kept thinking that if Tulip and David had just TALKED
I loved the fairy magic and holidays and even the format for the story. Using the holidays as a way to move us forward through time was clever. What I didnt like was the way our 2 MCs kept dancing around one another.
The narrator, Michael Fell, didnt add much to this experience. He read nicely but didnt add any extra flavor or zing at times he was almost monotonous.
I dont want to make it sound like this was horrible it wasnt. It just wasnt that interesting to me- and didnt strike my fancy.
I highly suggest looking at other reviews many others have enjoyed this. You dont need to read the series in order, but I wonder if Id read the book just before this Frangipani and the Very Shiny Boy (Beings in Love, #5.5) if Id have felt more strongly for this story. Frangipani and his Boy are in the story so
In any case I give this a 3 of 5 stars. Solid effort.
    An emotionally satisfying book.
This is a lovely, understated story and Micheal Fell's performance only enhances it. David and Tulip have both been hurt before and their journey towards reaching out and learning to trust again is, while raw at times, very emotional. Though set in a world where magical creatures are real and intermingle with humans the central themes and plot are so universal and grounded in reality that it hardly feels like fantasy.

Or Caliban, the so-called savage Prospero chained to his will? In this incredible retelling of the fantastical tale, Jacqueline Carey shows listeners the other side of the coin - the dutiful and tenderhearted Miranda, who loves her father but is terribly lonely. And Caliban, the strange and feral boy Prospero has bewitched to serve him. The two find solace and companionship in each other as Prospero weaves his magic and dreams of revenge. Beautiful, charming, slightly scary story
Inspired by Shakespeares The Tempest, this novel explores the characters of Miranda, daughter of the betrayed and exiled Prospero, and Caliban, the orphaned son of an exiled witch. These three live in isolation on an island where Prospero chains the local spirits to his will and schemes his revenge on those who betrayed him.
I dont recall ever having read or watched The Tempest (though it might have happened in school) so I came into this book not knowing much about the story and characters. We meet Miranda as a young girl. Her father has quite the ego and demands complete obedience from his daughter. Theyve been on the island for some years at this point, living in the still intact part of a crumbling fortress or castle. Hes tied several island spirits to his bidding. A fire salamander keeps his hearth warm while little house gnomes and elves clean. Miranda, and later Caliban, have to do most of the foraging and cooking as well as tending the cooking hearth as Prospero will only leash one fire salamander and that one is for his work rooms alone.
Its a lonely life for a child. She makes friends with the hens only to learn the hard way that is not so wise. When Caliban does come on the scene, hes only a few years older than Miranda and has been living on his own for several years. Prospero is a bit cruel in his handling of Caliban in those early days. Its Mirandas kindness that brings Caliban into language, cooking, and servitude. They develop a deep friendship.
For some reason, I found parts of this book slow. I havent quite put my finger on it but I did set this book aside once or twice to go read something a little more fast paced and then came back to this story. Perhaps it is because the story is told from Mirandas and eventually Calibans points of view. They dont know how they came to be on the island nor do they know Prosperos history nor what his end game is. Since I hadnt experienced The Tempest, I didnt either and this left a lot of big questions that werent revealed until near the end of the book. Even then, I finished this book feeling I need to go read The Tempest to have the full understanding of this story.
I did enjoy all the magical elements of the tale. The spirit Ariel was a wild card. Is it malevolent or merely frustrated at being imprisoned and then later chained to Prosperos bidding? It does torment Caliban with truth-laced words from time to time. Prospero is almost always in his rooms working on some bit of magic or other.

Kit Colbana - half breed, assassin, thief, jack of all trades - has a new job: track down the missing ward of one of the local alpha shapeshifters. It should be a piece of cake.
So why is she so nervous? It probably has something to do with the insanity that happens when you deal with shifters - especially sexy ones who come bearing promises of easy jobs and easier money.
Or maybe it's all the other missing kids that Kit discovers while working the case, or the way her gut keeps screaming she's gotten in over her head. Or maybe it's because if she fails - she's dead.
If she can stay just one step ahead, she should be okay. Maybe she'll even live long to collect her fee....

An exciting and energetic mix of fact and mystic fantasy wrapped in intrigue!
I bought I wasn't much of a fan of mystic sorcery types of books, but this was an absolute thrill to read. I'm now truly hooked on the Colbana Files series and plan to read them from beginning to end!
J.C. Daniels writes in such a way as to pull your eyes from page to page without rest. If I had some uninterrupted time at the beach, or in the den with a nice cup of hot tea, I would have finished this book in less than a day. As it is, I finished faster than I wanted to, and now I'm going back for seconds...and thirds...
Great work here, if you are looking for a hero with the brass and snap of a traditional "gumshoe" and the intelligence of an ace detective, covered with the real heartfelt emotions you expect from a hero, you need to read the Colbana Files by J.C. Daniels.

Like Badass Strong Women, With An Amusing Personality? Go No Further!
Have you ever read Kate Daniels? you would know if you had or not because it would of Rocked Your Socks Right Off!!
Blade Song is like an almost as good adult version of Kate Daniels, now if you know me thats high praise. When i first consumed Kate Daniels i devoured all 5 books in almost 3 days, then i turned around and read them again. I have never done that before (good thing otherwise people may become concerned). Anyways this book is maybe half a star less worthy, so maybe 4 1/2 stars, which is good. It has some pretty smexy scene's and some fantastic characters, that Daemon fellow, Whew *fans face*.
I like how the two main characters fit together. Kit is undoubtedly the most screwed up character i have ever come across (that is saying a lot) and Daemon jut takes it and deals, its incredible. Dude is occasionally a butt at times but Kit puts him back in his place, plus she's pretty hilarious. i like my girls with snark!
I love hilarious heroines, who doesnt enjoy a good laugh?
The rest of the characters/world are really interesting as well. I'm very much looking forward to exploring more of them/it in the future, especially the witches! crazy women, gotta love it.
I also cant wait for Kit's family to make an appearance, you just know thats going to happen sooner or later. Mwahaha *rubs hands together in glee*
OH! and Daemon's issues!!! can't believe i forgot those! man is it messed up how excited i am over these terrible things that are bound to happen?? I suppose it's okay cause i know they'll (kit and Daemon) will win in the end.
Will i be reading the next book?
    Hell Yes I Will!
    Who would I recommend to?
Kate Daniels and Night Huntress fan's.
    An amazing new series.

    Publisher's Summary:
A new chapter in the 2016 Rainbow Award-winning Horse Mistress series.
Kathrael is a nobody - an escaped Rhytheeri slave with a face disfigured by an acid attack and a giant chip on her shoulder. Despite being alone in the world, with no possessions other than the clothes on her back, she has vowed to lead a rebellion against the brutal overseers who once owned her. First, though, she's going to murder the cowardly bastard of a shape-shifter who was prophesied to save them all, and didn't.
The man who destroyed her life.
She's fully prepared to die along the way, if that's what it takes. But falling in love with both a eunuch priest and a scruffy, itinerant lion-shifter? Well...admittedly, that part she really didn't see coming.
Favian is content with his life as a pagan priest. After finding and losing a forbidden love, he has devoted himself to helping others as best he can. When a starving, desperate girl takes him hostage at knife point, he has no glimmering of the kind of journey that will follow. He'd convinced himself that love was for other people - not for the likes of him. And the one he lost? It turns out that when the gods are kind, what is lost can sometimes be found again.
As a lion-shifter, Ithric knows that his feline nature tends to get him into trouble. This time, though, he might be in just a hair deeper than usual. After he and Favian broke each other's hearts over a stupid misunderstanding, Ithric decided that relying on other people was a fool's game. Of course, that was before he ended up collared and locked in a cage. Now, some outside help would be just a teensy bit useful...even coming from a decidedly unexpected source.
The Lion Mistress, Book 1 contains graphic violence and graphic sex, including sex between men and sex with multiple partners. It is intended for a mature audience.

    Any additional comments?
This had to be the most interesting concept in my roster of audiobooks in a looooong time.
If you like long books, involved books, with lots of worldbuilding with religion/gods etc - which you should guess with a priest as a character - but even so, it was a little more than I was prepared to delve into BUT good interesting story, with elements you don't normally see and elements that were fascinating. Some great lines to get a kick out of too; "...mad as a bag of weasels." ;)
Erotic eloquence for open minded souls.
When an author has the ability to elicit strong emotions from me through words they get added to the secret library of treasured books in my head that are worthy of reading more than once. The whole Horse Mistress series made me laugh, cry, rage and love. I have a better idea of what gender fluidity is and I found myself contemplating the erotic possibilties of such oxymorons as monogamous polyamory. I truly hope the series continues. Also the narrator they found for this is quite simply... brilliant.
starts kind of slow, but gets much better.
The.start off this book was kind of slow for me. It built the background and told you about the main characters. It was not painfully slow, it still kept me interested, but i do like faster paced books. I am very glad I stuck with it though. before you know it, you are very into the story. I will say though, this is not kids.

    Uncertain
I believe that my uncertainty as to whether I really liked it or not is it is so short that the story is not well developed. To many different threads are included without much development. I will definitely get the next book just to see how it develops whether it leaves you wanting as this one did.
This is part of the romance series I would not have bought this short of a book due to lack of room for development or gone on to the next in the series if I was spending a credit a book
    Gotta Love This Pack!

    WOW!
I loved the first volume and this second volume is even better. You definitely know how to write an awesome action packed novel with the right amount of love and lust for all to have. Love the narrator, please keep using Jeffrey Kafer.
This one catches ahold of you immediately.
Braxton is a wolf shifter we met in the first books of the series. He was the bartender of the strip club who helped Branden and Eva rescue Jayden. He also rescued one of the strippers from rape. He was fired for helping the stripper as he injured the rapist. Braxton returns home to find his abusive father beaten to death in the kitchen. His mother sees him leaning over her dead husband with blood on him and accuses him of murder. He is arrested, but manages to escape on the way to jail. He returns home for his motorcycle then heads to a state where there is no extradition. Three wolf assassins chase him down, shoot him in his shoulder on a mountainous road where he falls down a very deep and rocky cliff. After waking he manages to drag himself in wolf form to a B & B which has a safe feel to it. He whines on the porch until Kate finds him and takes him into her home. She calls her friend who is a veterinarian who treats him for the gunshot wound. This is a beautifully written and narrated romance. Both lead characters are sensitive and loving.

Loved this! I really enjoyed Jodi's take on werewolves! Braxton is falsely accused of murdering his abusive father, he sets out for neutral territory and to prove his innocence, but when he is shot and run off the road by werewolf assassins, he barely escapes with his life and luckily he finds Grace. When Grace finds an injured wolf outside of her bed and breakfast, she doesn't know that her normal life is about to get a bit crazy.

    Publisher's Summary:
Misaki "Aki" Itou is a psi - a person with mutated DNA granting him psychic abilities. He's also a contracted companion - a whore. It may not be the perfect profession, but having a roof over his head, food to eat, and not being subjected to torture is a dream come true. He is the top companion at the Hidden Gem, and it makes him enough money to buy the prettiest, most sparkly shoes he can find.
Shane McNaughton is an Irishman who survived the Third World War and works as a cop. As head of Missing Persons, he's good at finding people, but after the plague mutated his DNA, he has a hard time letting anyone see the monster inside. He's been paying for Aki's services for two years, both the psi and the sexual kind, but he wants more from the companion.
Shane needs Aki's ability to see into another person's past to track down a serial killer murdering the children of rich and powerful men, but the more they work together, the clearer it becomes that they are linked through a darker past than either of them realizes.

    Engrossing
The audio version is much more intense than the print edition version, imho. The narrator does a fantastic job. The story starts off on a lighter note but the action and plot spins up and pulls you in like a whirlpool. The conclusion is satisfying. Recommended.
Fantastic beginning to a fantasy series!
The narration This is a new-to-me narrator, and at first I struggled with him, as he sounded quite gruff and a bit older than I expected. But that all disappeared as he started doing the various character voices and I warmed up to him quite quickly, especially with his brogue for Shane. I really hope he is selected for the rest of the series and that they go to audio as well.
The story I honestly thought this was a new-to-me author as well. It wasnt til I read her Goodread profile, and saw my checklist that I realized she also wrote the Dominion series. I had purchased them long ago, but they got lost in my tbr pile. I will say, after listening to thus book, she will definitely be going higher on my list of authors.
First off, this book does have a warning of mild BDSM, and that definitely is what it is mild. But not at all off putting as it works well with the worldbuilding and rank structure in this, I guess youd say brothel but not to the full extent. Due to his abilities Aki does not have to do what the others do, and his beauty as well as the skills he has make him highly sought after, even for others to be in his presence.
Well, unless of course you are a client scared of or prejudiced against a psi such as he, very obvious from the color of his eyes. The backstory in Aki is very fascinating and tidbits are revealed slowly, letting us as the reader know there is more to him even than he seems to know himself. I loved the pacing and the way things were hinted at without feeling like I was being fed the storyline. I got to feel it all along with the character.
POVs do change but the majority is from Akis point of view, and it works well because so much of what he knows is buried in his psyche and is fascinating as the layers peel away.
Shane is just what he is. A rough around the edges cop/shifter that has a softness in his heart for Aki. It doesnt seem so at first and I almost got mad at the way he was so accepting of Akis lifestyle and the pain Aki had to endure to be of use in the detectives investigation.
