A return to the period adventure thriller. Where Dead Men Meet reestablishes Mark Mills as a master storyteller for fans of William Boyd, Charles Cumming, or Robert Harris.
Paris, 1937. Luke Hamilton - a junior air intelligence officer at the British Embassy - finds himself the target of an assassination attempt. A clear case of mistaken identity - or so it first appears. As Luke is hunted across a continent sliding toward war, he comes to learn that the answers lie deep in a past that predates his abandonment as a baby on the steps of an orphanage 25 years ago.
From the author of the best-selling The Savage Garden, and set against a terrific backdrop of Europe on the cusp of the Second World War, this is a compelling novel, rich in adventure, espionage, secrets, and lies.

    Rather slow.
The tale itself wasn't too bad, but I found the pacing pretty erratic overall, and wasn't overwhelmingly interested in most of the characters. I stuck it out, but probably only worth the one listen.

    Title: Performance Anomalies
    Author: Victor Robert Lee
    Narrator: David Pittu
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-15-17
    Publisher: Perimeter Six Press
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
Read by Tony-nominated actor David Pittu, who received the 2014 Best Male Solo Performance award for his reading of Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch.
Victor Robert Lee's provocative literary spy novel Performance Anomalies launches a protagonist, partly of Chinese and Russian origin, to rival the most memorable espionage heroes. Cono 7Q is a startling young man of haunting heritage who has been gifted - or cursed - with an accelerated nervous system. An orphan and a loner, he acts as a freelance clandestine agent, happy to use his strange talents in the service of dubious organizations and governments-until, in Kazakhstan, on a personal mission to rescue a former lover, he is sucked into a deadly maelstrom of betrayal that forces him to question all notions of friendship and allegiance.
Relevant to our geopolitical times, Performance Anomalies tracks the expansion of Beijing's imperial reach into Central Asia, and the takeover of corruption-riddled Kazakhstan.
Cono 7Q's main adversary is a brutal Beijing agent whose personality has been twisted by the Cultural Revolution's devastation of his family. Performance Anomalies travels from Brazil and Stanford to Kazakhstan and the Tian Shan mountains, covering an engrossing emotional landscape set against the backdrop of an emerging new Cold War between America and both China and Russia.

    This is a worthy spy!
Our hero, Cono, is a free-lance spy. With his heightened nervous system, mixed heritage, and gift for languages, he makes a great spy. Now hes on a personal mission to assist a friend out of a heap of trouble. In Kazakhstan, the stakes are raised as European oil resources are threatened and weapons-grade uranium comes into play.
I was easily swept up by this book. Cono is perfect for espionage and it was refreshing to have a non-Caucasian hero. His mixed heritage and linguistic skills allow him to blend into so many different cultures. Cono is sometimes referred to as Cono 7Q and theres a short flashback that explains this. He has a rare mutation on gene 7Q that accelerates his nervous system, giving him an extra edge. He can pick up on minutia and interpret their meanings quickly. Also, he has lightning fast reflexes. Hes just on the edge of being a superhero.
Early in the story, he receives a desperate call from his former lover Xiao Li. Shes currently working as a classy prostitute and unfortunately she witnessed something she shouldnt have. Now her life is in jeopardy. Cono is several countries away but he calls in a favor with his long-time friend Timur who can get to Xiao Li quickly.
Once Cono meets up with Timur, things get messy. There are plenty of things that Cono and Xiao Li are unaware of, making it difficult to figure out who is on their side or against them. I really enjoyed the changing allegiances as people make backroom alliances. It made it so much harder for Cono and Xiao Li to untangle themselves from this mess.
My one quibble with this story is how the ladies are sexual objects or love interests, each of them. Now they are a bit better than Bond Women in that each of them has their own personality and a role that affects the plot. Still, I couldnt help giggling and rolling my eyes a bit as each woman wanted to bed Cono. Maybe that 7Q gene also puts out an irresistible pheromone. Dimira is a teacher and has known Cono for some years. She provides a temporary safe house and some contacts for Cono.

    Baldacci at his best
Thoroughly enjoyed this story which was fast paced. Was listening to it while working in house and found myself sitting down to listen to the story rather than switch it off in order to vacuum. Narration good and to me it was Baldacci at his best.
    Far-fetched plot, shallow characterisation
Not for me. Clichéd and lazy writing, no depth to characters, turgid dialogue. And "lightyear" is a measurement of distance, not time, David Baldacci and your lazy editor!
    What an annoying narrator
I'm only a few chapters in but the narrator's voice and style are driving me crazy. I would listen to another book by Baldacci but not if read by Scott brick. He has an annoying voice and most of the time I can't tell if it's the man or women talking. They both sound the same.
great story less than great performance
the story itsslef was really good however the narrator's performance left a lot to be desired.
he sounded bored and had no get and and go for the book. as well as that the editing left choppy areas and a lack of audio every now and then.
    Excellent
Fantastic, intricate, thrilling and compelling story. Scott Brick is one of the best narrators. I have listened to many of his and disturbed that previous reviews have expressed the opposite. can't wait for the next book.

Not your typical Agatha Christie tale
If you are expecting just another Agatha Christie mystery, you are in for a pleasant surprise. At its heart, The Secret Adversary is a mystery but Christie includes elements of adventure and espionage not normally seen in her stories.
The beginning of the story is so unlike the average Agatha Christie novel that some fans might be taken aback, but it picks up fast. The mystery and adventure had my undivided attention, like most Christie mysteries, this one wont disappoint. The characters are interesting and the dialogue adds dimension to those characters. By the end of the book, youll agree that the Secret Adversary is indeed, classic Christie storytelling. The narrator did a great job of drawing me into the story and had a talent for bringing the characters to life with his different voices. If youre an Agatha Christie fan I highly recommend you give this a listen!
    Truly awful
Love Agatha Christie , have been a huge fan for decades and have read and listened to practically all her books. This is a truly awful adaptation - only listened to 4 chapters then gave up - couldn't listen to any more. Don't bother wasting a credit on this audiobook:(
A Good Story spoiled by the Narration
Would you try another book written by Agatha Christie or narrated by David McCallion?
We are great fans of Agatha Christie and have many of the audiobook versions of her stories. However, I would not buy another with this narrator. We found him slightly fast at times but it was his complete mispronunciations that spoiled the book for us. Is English his first language? The odd one can be forgiven but there were far too many
Who was your favorite character and why?
Tommy for his down to earth, hidden qualities.
How could the performance have been better?
    Much better narrator
Did The Secret Adversary inspire you to do anything?
Look for another narrator when purchasing further books
    Any additional comments?

The third Jack McColl espionage thriller by David Downing (also the author of the WWII Station series) brings together two lovers in Bolshevik Russia.
Winter 1917: As a generation of Europe's young men perish on the Eastern and Western fronts, British spy Jack McColl is assigned a sabotage mission deep in Central Asia, where German influence is strong. As he quickly realizes, the mission only becomes more dangerous the closer he gets to its heart. Meanwhile, the woman he loves, Irish-American suffragette journalist Caitlin Hanley, is in Bolshevik Russia, thrilled to have the chance to cover the Revolution.
Caitlin knows Moscow is where she is meant to be during this historic event - even if she is putting her own life at risk to bear witness. But four years of bloody war have taken their toll on all of Europe, and Jack and Caitlin's relationship may become another casualty. Caitlin's political convictions have always been for progress, feminism, and socialism - often diametrically opposed to the conservative goals of the British Empire Jack serves. Up until now Jack and Caitlin have managed to set aside their allegiances and stay faithful to each other, but the stakes of their affair have risen too high. Can a revolutionary love a spy? And if she does, will it cost one of them their lives?

    Downing's clunker
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story line stretches credulity, and the characters are tired.
Would you ever listen to anything by David Downing again?
I enjoyed the 'Station' series, and have listened to the two previous books in this series. This is the weakest.

    The conspiracy theories continue!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
If my friend was into an action/conspiracy theory potboilers, then yes. Otherwise, not so much.
Would you recommend The Foundation to your friends? Why or why not?
    As above.
Have you listened to any of Jeffrey Kafers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't recall listening to this performer in the past, so I don't have a comparable. That said, it was a solid , and actually strong performance, consistent and realistic.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    Unlikely. Not my style.
    Any additional comments?
I was provided my copy of this audiobook by the author in exchange for this review. This is a relatively solid offering, with interesting underlying concepts and lots of action. Admittedly it is a bit of a stretch from a suspension of disbelief POV, but it does make some interesting points.
Some more editing and trimming is required, but on balance worth the credit, esp. for the type of book it is. Recommended.
Great Audio for a Great Story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Foundation to be better than the print version?
    They're both awesome!
What did you like best about this story?
The story kicks along at a rocking pace! It's perfect for listening to on a long drive.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Come on! No spoilers!
    real world stuff,
This was fast moving in some parts and definitely slowed down in others. Some parts seem to be all over the place. A good read lots of characters to intertwine within the storyline. Very political and kind of scary because who knows if his may ever happen one day. The narrator did a very good job
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Unbelievable Thriller
The author of this story is new to me, while the narrator is one of my favorite male narrators for romance and action stories. Parts of this book I absolutely loved and other parts not so much. My review is not a synopsis of the book, rather my opinion of it. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher.

Great WWII Spy Trilogy, book 3
This is third novel in the series and last on Audible. It features Kurt Mueller, the loyal German Officer who betrays his country in order to destroy the Nazis. While each novel stands on its own, reading the series in order is recommended.
The story begins with Mueller and his family living with his mother in Ireland. Actually Kurt's back from a dangerous mission, hoping to acquire leave to see his family. But the successes of his first two missions has all but insured he will be deployed without leave, perhaps to the end of the war. Then he receives a postcard from Hamburg. In order to save his family Kurt goes awol.
The action and suspense is nonstop. What makes it believable is the historical fact that the German Army and police were politically splintered between regular police and army, SS, and Gestapo. Mueller is German and uniquely equipped to manipulate these factions in order to complete his missions.
Wonderfully written and narrated, Postcard From Hamburg is a must read.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
For listeners of John le Carré and viewers of Homeland, a slow-burning psychological spy thriller by a former brigadier general of intelligence in the Israeli army.
After attending her father's funeral, former Mossad agent Rachel Goldschmitt empties her bank account and disappears. But when she makes a cryptic phone call to her former handler, Ehud, the Mossad sends him to track her down. Finding no leads, he must retrace her career as a spy to figure out why she abandoned Mossad before she can do any damage to Israel. But he soon discovers that after living undercover for so long, an agent's assumed identity and her real one can blur, catching loyalty, love, and truth between them. In the midst of a high-risk, high-stakes investigation, Ehud begins to question whether he ever knew his agent at all.
In The English Teacher, Yiftach R. Atir drew on his own experience in intelligence to weave a psychologically nuanced thriller that explores the pressures of living under an assumed identity for months at a time.
    Critic Reviews:
"An extraordinary page turner, told with clarity, insight, and compassion, The English Teacher offers a rare and realistic portrait of the unrelenting sacrifices of living a double life." (Gideon Raff)
"[Yiftach R. Atir] probes how leading a double life can erode the foundations of a spy's former existence; how all of the lies are rooted in truth, and the truth, especially when it comes to love, is often coated with a patina of lies.... Masterful." (The Times of Israel)
"The book...does exactly what a novel of its kind should do: re-examine the Mossad. Throughout the book...doubts are cast on personal as well as national morality.... Atir seeks to pinpoint the fine line separating the moral actions that operatives perform for their country and their own exploitation." (Ha'aretz)
    Members Reviews:
    Powerful suspense story
This is not a feel good happy ending spy story. It's a powerful and seemingly truthful account of an agent caught between a real life which holds nothing for her and a False life that she creates containing all that she loves. Well written and well read.
    The Good and the Bad
The Washington Post named this mystery novel one of the top 10 of 2016. I agree that the story was well written and interesting; however, while the narrator had a good voice and did an adequate job, her lack of energy throughout much of the story did a disservice to the author and the listeners. Overall, still a good audiobook.
In the leauge of "I am pilgrim "
If you want to feel what kind of nightmare the agents live this will swollow-you!
    Don't , just don't.
No big story, nothing special, no character building. I waited and waited then it's over.
    Unique, captivating and thought-provoking.
Very different from the usual spy thriller genre. It's stark, dark and realistic. No good guys. No bad guys. Just human beings.
