Jack felt the familiar burn of shame in his chest.
Why do I keep doing this...thinking about her? It was so long ago, but I can't get what happened out of my head. I shouldn't let any of that junk define me, but I still do. I'm driving in circles, caught in some loop that I can't break out of. I want to know why she abandoned me...but some things, I guess, I'll never know....
Handsome police officer Jack Stratton is the "hometown hero cop with a heart of gold". Constant nightmares have forced him to seek answers about his rough childhood and the dark secrets hidden there. With Alice (aka Replacement) by his side, Jack travels to Hope Falls to solve a murder that occurred before he was born. Everyone in the small town remembers the unsolved murder of Steven Ritter, but after 27 years, no one thought that someone would look into it - but they don't know Jack.
A heart-rending mystery-thriller about lost love, betrayal, and murder, Jack Knifed will keep you on the edge of your seat.

    Wonderful detective suspense mystery!
I love this very different 6 novel suspense mystery series. The Kindle versions are free to borrow with my Kindle Unlimited account. I read the first 5 novels in 2015 well before audio versions were available and then had to wait one year to read the 6th (And Then She Was Gone). Books 4 and 5 are not yet available in audio. Each book is stand alone.
The Detective Jack Stratton mystery series books are unusual and unorthodox. I like them so much that I want all of them in my Audible library. Jack Stratton was raised in the whorehouse where his mother worked. Now in his mid-20's he is a hero police detective with a heart of gold and very strict moral code to which he holds himself. In this novel he is searching for the father he never met and for his mother's history.
There is so much to like about the Jack Stratton series. The character development with the vivid characters is outstanding. Alice, who is called Replacement, is a wonderful young lady who has lived in poverty her entire life and who plays a key role in Jack Knifed. The novels are fast paced and they are fun. Of course, there are also twists and turns. As much as I enjoyed the Kindle version, the Audible version is even better thanks to the narration of Andrew Tell. I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ENTIRE SERIES!!
    Very entertaining fast paced mystery...
This is the third book I've listened to in the Jack Stratton series. These are really good books with with an admirable protagonist. He's a young cop with a hot temper and a soft heart. He grew up in foster care and now lives platonically with a young woman who came to live in the same home after he left.
Jack grew up thinking of himself as a throw away child who must not have been worthy of keeping. Him mother was an addict and he didn't know who his father was. In this book he goes to a psych hospital and sees his mother for the first time in about 20 years. She mentions his father's name and that someone killed him.
Jack and his friend/roommate go to his mother's hometown to solve a 27 year old mystery.
Great read, fast paced and interesting plot.
The books in this series do not have to be read in order. Each can be read as a stand alone.
Andrew Tell does a very good job narrating.
I RECOMMEND this book for an easy listen.

    Title: Celine
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Peter Heller
    Narrator: Kimberly Farr
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-07-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 155 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
From the best-selling author of The Dog Stars and The Painter, a luminous, masterful novel of suspense - the story of Celine, an elegant, aristocratic private eye who specializes in reuniting families, trying to make amends for a loss in her own past.
Working out of her jewel box of an apartment at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, Celine has made a career of tracking down missing persons, and she has a better record at it than the FBI. But when a young woman, Gabriela, asks for her help, a world of mystery and sorrow opens up. Gabriela's father was a photographer who went missing on the border of Montana and Wyoming. He was assumed to have died from a grizzly mauling, but his body was never found. Now, as Celine and her partner head to Yellowstone National Park, investigating a trail gone cold, it becomes clear that they are being followed - that this is a case someone desperately wants to keep closed. Combining the exquisite plotting and gorgeous evocation of nature that have become his hallmark, with a wildly engrossing story of family, privilege, and childhood loss, Peter Heller gives us his finest work to date.

    Murder HE Wrote
Peter Heller wrote my sentimental favorite, The Dog Stars, with the precious ol' Jasper; devoted to Hig, flying the fuel restricted circumference day after day perched in the co-pilot's seat on a stack of handmade quilts. (I always think of that joke when I think of Dog Stars...*the dyslexic pilot whose co-pilot was DOG.*) Besides the sure sell of a furry character, the poetic styling, rugged outdoorsiness, the touch of philosophical pensiveness had me carrying a burning torch for Heller's zen-like edginess. And so, I devoured his next novel, The Painter, with nearly the same enthusiasm and dreamy reverie. I think Heller can thank me for selling probably a hundred copies at least of Dog Stars.
Margaret Atwood reflected on failure in an article for The Guardian: "Who set the bar so high that most of our attempts to sail gracefully over it on the viewless wings of Poesy end in an undignified scramble or a nasty fall into the mud?" After the disappointment of Celine: A Novel, I thought about Atwood's remarks, and about my disappointment with Heller's new direction -- because this felt like a set up for a series.
Celine still has some of the hallmarks of Heller's talents, his landscapes are just as vivid, and at times he hits some of the poetic prose, but overall it falls immensely short if you're comparing it to his previous works that *sailed so gracefully on the wings of Poesy.* He is in his element talking about the awe-inspiring landscapes of Yellowstone, Montana, and Wyoming. He is also in his element when he describes women -- and if you've read Heller's journalistic treatment of *grapefruit breasted* women you'll understand that concerning the female gender, the guy is leaden rather than golden. Here let's talk about the elephant in the pages...the old, wrinkly, wizened, graying senior citizen, emphysemic, "old woman" Celine. The 'ol gal is all of 67. (Hope Heller never intends on asking Christie Brinkley for a date.) Celine is the "Prada P.I," not your ordinary, uh, private dick.

This is how much I have enjoyed this series.
I am usually extremely tough on narrators who mispronounce words, and editors who let them slide. It's not the kindest part of my nature. But when Nikki said that one of her fellow characters was an "aficiando" of history, for me, that malaprop was Nikki's, not Ms. Meire's, and I had a nice chuckle. That's how real the characters came to be for me, in Ms. Meire's versatile voice.
The plots in these books are unique, and involving, but it's my involvement with great characters that keeps me coming back every time.
    Jay Thomas
Not as strong as the others
But do love these characters and the narrator; kept me engaged but not breathless for the next installment.
Another great 'on the Fens' suspense thriller!
The books in this wonderful detective series by British author Joy Ellis are being released in audio monthly. I have listened to the first 4 in order. Ellis is an excellent story teller. Protagonist Detective Inspector Nikki Galena is a complex and fascinating character. In this case I wish I could award award 4.5 stars. Narrator Henrietta Meire is superb.
So much melodrama and contrived shock value
Becoming increasingly formulaic- bizarre happenings, personal threats and danger to team, so much killing for one small town. It feels like she is just trying to come up with more and more bizarre storylines. I still can't get over how useless and contrived the mask wars were in the first book. I keep listening because I do like some of the characters, but I find myself more disinterested and wanting to skip ahead. It doesn't help that some of the accents are painful - not sure if they are just true to region, but still grating.
    A fan of continuing series
I have really enjoyed the DI Galena series. The characters are interesting and the plots are intriguing. I will be sad to be done with the available titles and eagerly await a new one .

If you could re-create a day, what dark secrets would you uncover?
From New York Times number-one best-selling author Brandon Sanderson comes a detective thriller in a police beat like no other.
Anthony Davis and his partner, Chaz, are the only real people in a city of 20 million, sent there by court order to find out what happened in the real world 10 days ago so that hidden evidence can be brought to light and located in the real city today.

That's one order they have to refuse.
The hunt is on. And though the dupes in the replica city have no future once the Snapshot is turned off, that doesn't mean that both Davis and Chaz will walk out of it alive tonight.

"Narrator William DeMeritt delivers everything one needs in this sci-fi gumshoe novella.... Sanderson's skillful story is made all the more compelling by DeMeritt's deliberate narration." (AudioFile)

    Yet, Another Universe
I hate to sound like a broken record, but Sanderson does it again. He comes up with something entirely different from what he has been writing. Think of your favorite fantasy or sci-fi writers and now think of how many universes they write in. For most it is one. I have lost count of how many Sanderson has invented and so many are great wonders to get lost in. This world is a world within a world or a city-state within a city-state. It is a time travel book. It is easy to get into your head, the rules are not complicated. The story has some twists and turns, some are predictable, but a couple I did not see coming.
The universe itself is enough to recommend this book, but I also like the characters. These are cops or detectives who are basically outcasts. In the real world they are losers, outcasts, failures. In this world it is harder for them to screw up and cause damage. They of course don't see themselves this way and are hungry to prove themselves. One cop is OVERLY AGRESSIVE, while they other one is the opposite. Yet, even in a world that really does not exist, crime can still happen and crazies can still torture.
If your a Sanderson fan, this is a must and if you don't know him, this is a good place to start.
Creative World and Fantastic Mystery Story
I have been meaning to try a story by this author for quite some time, but hadn't gotten around to it until now. My loss! The creative worldbuilding, the description of characters and setting, the tight plot with that wow-worthy end twist made for a fantastic first-time encounter. This was a cross between sci-fi and mystery with a good old-fashioned detective noir feel.
This shorter story introduces a futuristic situation when technology now allows police to recreate a day and setting from the near-past and send officers into the simulation to find out what happened on a certain day or time to gather facts that will lead to finding evidence in the real world to present in court.

    Members Reviews:
Series is doing a great job of being a consistent
So I really enjoyed this book and loved watching Verity commit to being a ghost hunter and heading straight into a job. I think the best part of the book though was that Verity really handled much of this book on her own. Ellis was very much a supporting character in this story versus being with her for all the adventures and Frankie was just plain not willing to help.
The mystery was fabulous and very different from what I expecting with a book series being so entrenched in the southern culture. Mummies and Egyptian curses was a great addition to Sugarlands already rich history. Verity and Ellis relationship is still too cute for words and I enjoy how accepting he is of her and Lucy the skunk.
I guess by only issue with the book and why I didnt give it 5 stars is new dynamic to Verity and Frankies relationship because I personally felt Frankie was a total ass in this book and his last minute pep talk to Verity seemed very out of place for him considering how he treated her throughout the rest of the book. His whole reluctance to be even remotely helpful seemed very out of character for him based on the past books. I understand being tied to Veritys property is a drain on him and honestly Im kind of ready for that to be over.
Angie Fox did a fabulous job of describing the house and grounds of Rock Fall mansion and it painted a very detailed in my head. The other good thing Angie does is keep Verity true to her character and I love that. The character has stayed consistent throughout the four books and hasnt started to annoy me yet which usually happens by now in most series. I also have no complaints as Tavia Gilbert has now become the voice of Verity and I will accept now substitutes.
Concerns: Either give her a good steady job with income or paying clients cause after this fourth book if I have to read about Dollar Store Ramen noodles I think Im going to scream.
    Humorous and Suspenseful Paranormal Mystery
Killer title, right? Yeah, sorry couldn't resist that one, but it's really what snagged my attention first. The whimsical cover screamed cozy mystery to me and that's fine because I've been meaning to try more of them. But then hey...

Laborious story and less than stellar narration
I don't often write a bad review but we all know that a good narration can make a bad book better. Unfortunately, in this case, we have a poor narration making a mediocre and rather implausible story, well, mediocre. I really struggled with Emma Wyman's high pitch delivery, unusual intonation and unconvincing character voices hard to listen to, and the story felt improbable and laboured.
    Disturbing subject matter
I had to stop listening. Be warned this is about a child molester. It was just too disturbing to continue listening to.
    Little Girl Lost
I tried very hard to like this book but wasn't successful. The narrator had an accent that was irritating and she seemed as bored and detached as I was. I was disappointed with the story line as well. After 2 dreadful chapters I had to shut it off to save my sanity. There was NOTHING going on except her voice going on and on and on
    Kept me listening for hours.
The reason for the 4 star overall review is because I think the listeners can do without the disgusting details given during the child molestation. That's too far in my book. That aside it was an amazing book.
    meh
    This story was OK.
The narrator needs to learn how to take a pause -- especially at the end of chapters! As a result, sometimes I had no idea where we were, who was talking, what was happening and to whom!
I predicted the ending (an ironic statement after my third sentence)

    Release date: 01-17-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Evan Evans is a young police constable who has traded in the violence of city life for idyllic Llanfair, a Welsh village tucked far away from trouble. Nestled among the Snowdonia mountain range, Llanfair looks to Constable Evans like a town forgotten by time, but he quickly learns that even the bucolic countryside has its share of eccentric - and deadly - characters. Evans' new neighbors include two competitive ministers vying for the souls of their flock, one lascivious barmaid, and three other Evanses: Evan-the-Meat, Evans-the-Milk, and Evans-the-Post (whose favorite hobby is to read the mail before he delivers it).
Before Evans has time to sort through the complicated relationships and rivalries of his new home, he's called to the scene of a crime as brutal and fearsome as any he encountered in the big city. Two hikers have been murdered on the trails of the local mountain, and Evans must hunt down a vicious killer - who may or may not be linked to the mysterious destruction of Mrs. Powell-Jones' prize-winning tomatoes.
Evans Above is the first novel in Rhys Bowen's popular Constable Evans Mystery Series.

    Interesting....
A good British cozy/village crime novel. The reader was stylistically very good but a bit plodding. Amazingly the performance improved quite noticeably by just upping the speed to 105%. I do recommend trying it at the higher speed.
    Another great series!
Rhys Bowen's versatility is amazing and she doesn't strike a wrong note in this series set in Wales. The narrator is a bit slow but I finally just put it to 1.25 speed and it was fine. Very enjoyable.
    Enjoyable Cozy Mystery
A great cozy mystery with a Welsh mountain village setting and cast of characters. I picked up a few clues along the way, but their relevance was less obvious than I'd thought. Narrator is wonderful.
This doesn't have the light touch of the author's Royal Spyness mysteries but it's no less enjoyable. I'm delighted to have found a new (to me) series to enjoy.
    Has it all
A glimpse of small town Welsh life, great characters you know you'll be able to enjoy for many books in the series, a cozy mystery with a bit of excitement, and from Roger Clark, a gorgeous Welsh voice that just about sings the story. Well done! I hope the rest of the series becomes available!
    Interesting.
Having read Rhys Bowen's Spyness series I thought I would branch out and try her other work. Did not have the lightheartedness of the other series and seemed to move rather slowly.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Constable Evan Evans is persuaded to join the local male choir for the upcoming eisteddfod (cultural festival), he doesn't think the addition of his mediocre voice will do them much good. In spite of all the effort that choirmaster Mostyn Phillips puts in to the choir, it is not exactly first class. Hope arrives in the form of world-renowned tenor Ifor Llewelyn, come home to Llanfair to rest, on doctor's orders.
Llewelyn immediately sets about renewing old friendships, and Mostyn even persuades him to sing with the choir. But Ifor isn't in Llanfair long before the residents decide that his presence is a mixed blessing. Noisy fights between Ifor and his wife, a threatening stranger, and Ifor's own warped sense of humor make life in Llanfair increasingly tense. When he announces that he is planning to write his memoir, telling all about his numerous relationships with famous and infamous women, he jokes that some people won't be happy. But is someone unhappy enough to commit murder to stop him? While tracking down a dangerous killer, Constable Evans also manages to navigate the treacherous waters of neighborhood rivalries, lusty barmaids, and local gossip.
With her third book in this acclaimed series, Rhys Bowen offers another pause-resisting tale of small-town mayhem and murder in Evanly Choirs.
    Members Reviews:
Good but not Bowen's best work
I enjoyed this little mystery, that unfolds in Wales, with the good-hearted Constable Evan Evans at work doing what he does best--using his knowledge of local people and his keen intuitions to solve the murder the higher-ups cannot. It's also fun to get a sense of the local Welsh names and customs.
This short series precedes the "Royal Spyness" stories, where I think Rhys Bowen has created a more engaging set of characters. But they are a pleasant listen in their way. I thought this one was a little flat (perhaps due to the narration as much as the story), and it was a bit choppy in getting all the characters and clues in place. But it has mostly well-drawn characters, and the ending was not obvious throughout the story. It is interesting to put these two series side by side to see Bowen's development as an author, and a good read, if you are not seeking anything too flashy.
This is a good cozy mystery--certainly worth a listen. But the quality of the recording is not as good as one might wish, and that detracts from what is less than stellar narration. I guess what this book was missing was anything that made it "pop" (as they say about colors and styles). Get it, enjoy it, just know it's more like a cup of herbal tea than an exciting cocktail.
One good thing about this series--they can be read out of order (which I did, years ago) with no real loss of continuity.
Good for escape to wilds of wales
Perfect for not-scary, fun (if not complex) characters with Welsh accents. Not as much laughing as Her Royal Spyness, yet smiles of amusement frequently.

    Publisher's Summary:
The delightful 17th installment of the ever-popular, perennially best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.
Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's premier lady detective, is a little short on help. The codirector of the agency, Grace Makutsi, is busy with her own case, her client none other than their erstwhile assistant, Mr. Polopetsi, who has unwittingly involved himself in a pyramid scheme. The agency's other assistant, Charlie, may also need more help than he can offer, as he is newly embroiled in a romance with a glamorous woman about whom the others have their doubts. So when a young Canadian woman approaches Mma Ramotswe with a complex case, it's up to her alone to solve it - with her signature intuition and insight, of course. The young woman spent part of her childhood in Botswana and needs help finding a long-lost acquaintance. But much time has passed, and her memory yields few clues. The difficult search - and the unexpected results - will remind them all that sometimes it's those we think we know best who most surprise us.
    Critic Reviews:
"It's delicious to visit with old friends, and that's certainly the case in Lisette Lecat's lovely performance of Alexander McCall Smith's newest No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mystery. South African-born Lecat, who has long narrated the series, understands the characters and atmosphere perfectly; thus, the listener can trust that all sounds as it should in the company of Botswana's Mma Ramotswe and her compatriots." One of the best in the series
Yes, these women are like dear old friends, the narrator a comforting voice, and the writing a fabulous international trip, but this one has a message and a true heart. There's a double meaning in the title: the two words are the names of the characters and also point to where the story is going to lead. There are a few of these titles I might not suggest, but this one is a must for the Number 1 Ladies fans.
A wonderfult series, That is well known.
The traditionally built lady detective of Botswana Mma Precious Remotswe is back for novel #17 in this wonderful series. Joining her is her mechanic husband and proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, their adopted children Motholeli and Puso, her secretary/business partner Grace "97%" Makutsi, ex-apprentice mechanic and current apprentice detective Charlie, mechanic Fanwell, chemist and part time detective and mechanic Mr. Polopetsi, orphan farm matron Mma Portokwane, and of course Grace's long time nemesis Violet Sephotho.
All 17 novels in this glorious light detective series are in my Audible library. Precious and Grace is a wonderful addition. The setting is Gaborone the capital city of the democratic landlocked south African country of Botswana. The novels in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series are as much about the adventures and eccentricity of the various characters as they are about solving mysteries; there are always valuable life lessons learned.
Lisette Lecat narrates all novels in this series in Botswana's speech patters in English. Lecat is very, very good with regional accents.
I highly recommend this book and this series with the understanding that they are more about the foibles of the characters than with high adventure or strong suspense.
