Max Porter series just gets better and better!

I received an ARC in exchange for a fair review but I liked this book so much I bought my own copy. This is the 5th book in the series about a researcher, Max Porter, his semi paranormal wife Sandra, and their buddy, a ghost Private Investigator named Drummond who helps them solve cases but who only Max can see and hear. As much as I have enjoyed each one of this series, I think this one hit it further out of the park than usual. Max and his Scoobies are really getting their groove on in this story but what is even better is that people (or whatever) you were convinced were enemies in previous stories just MIGHT not be as bad as you thought. The story centers around a pregnant family and a possessed house and moves through a tale of Prohibition, Speakeasies, and well, that's all the spoilers you are going to get. Buy this book and you will be hooked and then you can drop broad hints to family members that a perfect Christmas gift would be the other 4 volumes of this series. You will get hours of great reading. Enjoy!

I have been devouring this series, as fast as a book a day, when I am able to keep reading, and you will want to keep reading.

I discovered Stuart Jaffe's Paranormal-Mystery series just before book 6, Southern Curses was released. The main characters are husband and wife and a ghost detective who adds a Noir flavor to the stories. The characters may have some special abilities but Stuart does a great job of letting us experience their day to day lives and the interaction, frustrations and joys as they adventure thru the paranormal and reality. They are not "super heroes" and the story lines involve them solving the mysteries in "realistic" way, using their limited special abilities, their humanity, their teamwork and their brains.

I have been devouring this series, as fast as a book a day, when I am able to keep reading, and you will want to keep reading.

Who knew ghostly detective work could be so exhausting!

This author continues to entertain. The whole dynamic of the characters is so different from anything I have read before. And once again I really appreciate how he weaves in the local history and folklore.

Well-written but lacks depth

Emme writes well and as an independent author, takes care to eliminate common editing mistakes many do not. For that she deserves kudos. Her heroine Harry has Kate Daniels'-like supernatural and martial arts skills and like many other books in the genre, she develops new powers which are superior to others. I like this type of context. Where the book(s) fall short for me, however, are in three areas:

First: the world-building is very light. We have a made-up city of unknown proportions that appears to be the first choice when villains are attempting to establish a new world order. Why exactly? Do other cities have identical political setups (i.e. a master vamp in control)? Is there a master supernatural council somewhere worldwide? Why is Nash an Alpha but clearly subservient to the local Werewolf council headed by his mother? Who is Isaac and where does he fit in the vampire hierarchy? We know Harry has uniqe skills that have not been seen for millenia; wouldn't that set off alarm bells elsewhere? Etc, etc. This aspect of the books remains underdeveloped and I thought would be fleshed out as the series progressed. Not so.

Second: The romance is rushed, almost to the point of mere convenience. Harry herself points out multiple times that she and Nash haven't gone on a single date and even though Nash's wolf says they're mated, neither "human" agrees they truly like each other. Most of their encounters involved him yelling at her for interfering in his investigation so I'm not sure why Emme accelerated their relationship to intimacy so quickly. (The old "I hate him but I can't resist him" trope).

Third: I love supernatural books with a strong kickass heroine but if you are going to pair her with an alpha wolf, ensure that our hero recognizes her strengths and doesn't pat her on the head and expect her to sit in a corner while the menfolk handle the situation. Emme pens Nash to state this directive in one fashion or another throughout the book and then explicitly writes a scene in the book to emphasize their relationship. (*** minor spoiler: Nash handcuffs her to a crate in the middle of a firefight and she's confronted by two bad guys who try to rape her ***) .

Good vs. Evil

This is an intriguing book. I have not listened or read paranormal suspense/urban fantasy books before. I thought I would try a new genre to see if it fit my tastes. I was intrigued by this story, but just couldn't get into it like I do typical romance or mystery books. The book is part of a series and there are several references to the earlier books in this story. I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, narrator, and/or publisher. I think the author did a good job with descriptions and the story flowed, but this genre just isn't for my tastes and that is why I rated the story 3 stars. The narrator did a very good job.

surprised me (in a good way)

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This book surprised me by how good it was. I am not usually a huge paranormal fan, but this was really interesting. It was intelligently written and funny. The plot was pretty original. I loved how the bomb part of the story played out. The characters were well developed and easy to find yourself getting wrapped up in what happens to them and rooting for them. Narrator was great. Smooth and easy to listen to. Very good read.

Another very entertaining and enjoyable addition to the series. A supernatural thriller with plenty of intrigue, mystery and suspense that pulls you into the story from the beginning and never lets go.While I enjoyed this installment of the series, it wasn't as exciting and fast paced as the 2 previous books.

While technically you could listen to this book as a standalone I wouldn't recommend it. There are several references to events that have happened in previous books. Especially the areas that deal with Samantha and his brother Mikey. It's worth it to start at the beginning of the series.

The story is told through multiple POV's.

Being Gods Bounty Hunter on earth is not an easy job. Evil never takes a break. It's everywhere.

Well Done and Creepy

I recently discovered Duncan Ralston after I read Woom (a Matt Shaw production), so when I ran across the opportunity to get a review copy of the audio for this one, I jumped all over it.

Salvage is less extreme than Woom, but for a straight up ghost story it has some truly creepy and disturbing scenes in it. The back story and mystery plots are very well done and the narrator does an admirable job of keeping the pacing of the story moving as the towns skeletons are slowly revealed.

Very well done. I will be looking forward to more work from Mr. Ralston. 4.5 Audible Stars!

I dont normally read/listen to these types of books; I like my sweet HEA, but this one . . .

Abbie Roads uses such vivid descriptions that several times I had to close the book to clear the visual from my mind. Its that good.

Xander Stone, after being hit by lightning, was given the gift, or curse, of being able to hear peoples thoughts. The police use this ability during their interrogations. For years Xander was plagued by an internal voice begging him to save someone, an unknown woman. He drank until the voice was silenced.

Isleen Walker and her grandmother had been held captive and tortured for eight years. The only thing that kept her alive was her frail grandmothers promise that her savior would come and save them. It was too late. The last stabbing in her side would be the end of her, if not Queen would finish it in the morning. Grandma lied, he wasnt going to rescue her.

The story is so involved and intense that you dont know where she is going to take you next. Your heart starts to calm down and she scares you with something else.

Roger Wayne was an exceptional narrator.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There were several, but I pick Isleen Walker. She went through so much but never gave up hope. Xander the hero because how he protected her, and Rowena for being the mother neither of them had.

Love this Debut Novel!!

I can hardly believe this was a first novel! Well written--a true page-turner. It gripped me from page 1 to the very last word! Well done, Abbie Roads; excellent narration, Roger Wayne!!

Fascinating

This is the first time I have read this author. I wasn't sure what to expect, and was delighted at how good it was. Parts were frightening, funny, sad, emotional and romantic. Strong characters who seemed larger than life. Others that were irritating and there were some really evil men involved too.

Better than candy!

Firstly, this is my first book by Abbie Roads. I didn't know what to expect. At first glance, the cover is what made me stop and say, "hmm, what's this?" Then the blurb grabbed my attention but I had no clue that I would be sucked into the world she created.... and love every second of it.

This was a very fun book to read. The narrator did a good job on the audio. The author was creative and talented.

My favorite scene was when they finally got the wife because she annoyed me to no end. Which proves how great this was.

Nerdy detective, catches the bad people.

I can't wait for possibly more of these because i have really enjoyed the first one. I have reread three times so far including the voice over four. I love the wit and combined seriousness of the characters and the obvious research that went into it. Her character really comes to life and i feel like i have made a kick butt knew friend.

A great read.

Enjoying the story is what makes for a great book. I think of it as a bonus when seemingly unrelated story lines converge.

A lot of fun

I don't like mysteries that involve supernatural players.... but I really liked this one. The ghost was rarely about but the cold case was very present. There were surprises aplenty that had nothing to do with ghosts.. Fun, interesting, a good book and a nice change of pace.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No. But be warned, this is a light detective/ horror story with demons in it. I found it funny and would listen to more in the series, but would not recommend it to religious sensitive people.

WOW!

pi, excop, witches, supernatural, suspense, paranormal, detective, thriller, nyc

Ex NYPD now a PI, his girl Friday, the helpful witch, the ghost of a murdered man, and a very confusing client make up the main characters in this paranormal thriller. There is situational humor, and some things that stretch the imagination, but all combine to make for a thoroughly enjoyable tale! I later noticed that this is the third in a series, but who could tell?

Steven J Cohen has a very expressive voice which conveys emotions and characters extremely well.

Who Needs Ghostbusters w/Jason & Trina on the Case

I have never read a story by Ms. Macomber, but I will now. Fun story and great characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Scarlet, Sometimes?

So many fun and hilarious moments (dolls, 6' teddy bear, cab drivers). You've got to listen to fully enjoy.

What about Steven Jay Cohens performance did you like?

Mr. Cohen has a wonderfully soft voice. I enjoyed his storytelling and character roles. It's wonderful when the narrator transports you to another time and place.

Continuation of a great series

What did you love best about Scarlet, Sometimes?

The third book of this series, I have really gotten to like the main characters and their nuances.

Yes, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys twist and turns with a dose of stalwartness.

What did you like best about this story?

Believe it or not, I really like Salvatore and Isaac and hope that some missing info will be cleared up in another book.

What about Dara Rosenbergs performance did you like?

I thought she hit most of the characters voices on the mark in a way similar to Lorelei King,

I would have given a 3.5 stars for the story if I could. Though the story has been an enjoyable read, I have been thoroughly frustrated at the continual information blackout that makes Harry appear to be rather an airhead. Or perhaps the goal is to continue the ostrich effect...what do I know!!??!!

I tried to like this book but the more I listened the more annoyed I got. The lead character Harry was undeveloped and made and made idiotic decisions over and over again. The only thing that saved this book was the world building created by Lisa Emme. The environment created for Harry is descriptive and creative filled with likable supportive characters. I would have stopped listening if it were not for them.

A great series that was around since 2016!

A light, cozy, paranormal mystery. The action is fast and continues until the end. Harry is witch and can see ghosts. Her roommates are a werewolf, Tess and a human, Holly. They are childhood friends and entrepreneurs, with a five-year plan to buy the building the fire hall. That was their plan until vampires get involved.

In this society there are vampires, witches and werewolves. There are two strong male characters, Nash, the police officer/werewolf, as well as Salvador, a vampire. Both male characters play true to the stereotypes for their characters. Nash is a sexy brooding character that take command of situation and gives orders, he is also a little grumpy. Salvador is a suave old-world vampire. He is the Magister and the most powerful vamp.

After her initial vampire meeting, Nash leads her to his bike holding her hand. She reflects that is was kinda nice. There is the traditional tug of war between the alpha wolf male and alpha human female; I can take care of myself, you cannot mark me as your property like you pee on a tree. Even before that you are given the clue there could be romantic interest.

When Harry is in a threatening situation she uncovers additional powers. She learns information about her parent(s), and characters in her entourage.
