highly enjoyable & engaging magic-based horror

Black magic is the name of the game in this entertaining horror story from Russell James. Dark magician Lyle Miller has set up shop in the downtown portion of the dying Citrus Glade, Florida, where his magic shop draws the attention of four teenage misfits and a priest who suspects devilry is afoot. Such is the opening of Lyle's Grand Adventure, which promises to deliver plenty of bloody murder alongside an apocalyptic storm that will wipe Citrus Glade and all its inhabitants clean off the map.

Black Magic was a nice surprise to discover. At first, I had thought the story lacked focus as much of the first hour of this 8 1/2 hour listen is devoted to introducing the book's major players, of which there are many. James assembles a large cast to wreak plenty of havoc upon, ranging from the mayor of Citrus Glade to the town's sole DPW worker, a citrus farming family, a drug mule, a handful of retirees living in an old folks home, and more. Thankfully,Black Magicrewards the patient listener and James draws his diverse cast together in a few surprising ways, drawing them all into various energetic and action-packed set pieces. This book also served as my introduction to Russell James, and I was pleasantly surprised at his ruthlessness as he dispatched characters in some rather unsettling, and magically showy, ways (it's only after having listened to Black Magic that I now realize I have several other titles from this author on my Kindle, which I'm now forced to move up the reading queue a bit!). The classic trick of sawing somebody in half gets a gory, gut-twisting workout in a scene I won't soon forget, and James riffs on several other well-known magic tricks along the way in wonderfully gruesome scenarios. James doesn't pull any punches and, frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

On narrating duties is David Stifel, whose baritone voice gives this book's various horrors rich gravitas and plenty of weight. Having listened to a few of Stifel's other readings, I knew what to expect from this reliable narrator and wasn't disappointed.Black Magic is a fun work in its own right, but Stifel makes it an easy listen to sink into. He's a pro, delivering a well-finished audiobook with no noticeable flaws in the production.

Russel James delivers a highly enjoyable and engaging magic-based horror thriller. Black Magic is more Wes Craven thanCharmed, so if you're looking for a fun, pulpy romp with plenty of darkness and savagery, this should fit the bill rather well.

Fast Paced and Interesting

I really liked this book. It was fast paced without skipping over details that were needed to bring the story together. I've read books about witches and magic before that got so complicated and used completely made up words that I had a hard time following. This book had simple concepts and explanations that kept me interested. The characters were also well described and developed nicely though the story. I downloaded the first two books for free, but I would have gladly paid for them. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Witch Myth: Wildfire

Gwen, a 16 year old orphaned who just happened to be a witch was taken in by a fairly large coven. After ten years, even tho she wasn't blood, she had an established spot in the family. One day she woke up staring at a reflection of herself. It turned out to be her dead twin sister. A curse was put upon the coven and one by one they become very ill. It was up to Gwen to figure out how to save her family.

Just Wow

Oh so intriguing ! The storyline had me from the start. The characters were weird and crazy that keep me engrossed that I couldn't put this book down ! I had to get the next book ASAP. A tottally must read !

Love

Enjoyed every minute. Read in a couple hours. Just a fun read. Easy to pass the time with. She left no ties untied which is something that will ruin a book for me. She created many many entertaining questions about the plot. Wondering who did it and all that. I can't wait to read the next one.

Easy reading

Witches and evil - what a good, easy , entertaining read. Good and bad, white witches vs dark witches; an outcast adopted witch and a jealous family member, unaware community and disaster all combine for an interesting unbelievable but believable read. I am actually looking forward to more/ continued ventures!

Excellent story

This is an excellent CIA/spy novel with lots of intrigue and action. Excellent character development with just enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes without getting lost. The factual events in the story are just enough to make it real. The title makes it obvious there is more to come but the ending of the story does not seem so obvious for continuation. I can see it continuing but not real sure exactly which way it should go.

Bill Nevitt does an excellent job narrating this story. His voices work well and provide distinct character differentiation. He even has one character that sounds whiny when needed but not all the time. Unlike another story I recently read where several characters were whiny all the time, even when they shouldnt be.

Amazing..

This is my first intro to this author. I knew in the first few pages that this book had my undivided attention. I never reveal details in a review....just read this book and be riveted page after page.

Reminds me of a Dan Brown novel.

Love the high concept of a Sky Fall event. This is strengthened by the chapter epigraphs. It reads a bit like a serial, somewhat episodic in its plot. Also, the idea of the Nephilim is cool (though I didn't love that the little girl joined in). A few memorable characters too, primarily Alice. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

No. I enjoy audio books but the print version would be just as good or better.

What was one of the most memorable moments of When the Sky Falls?

Spoiler: When Alice is torturing Miguel. It made me physically cringe. Great characters. Alice is a psycho but she's a very likable one.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Really loved the way it made you think about everything you've been taught and what you believe. It makes you evaluate yourself and the world you think you live in.

This was a great book. Very psychological and analytical so it makes you think, but the characters and the stakes keep the pace up so you want to keep reading.

Gripping thriller

Oh yeah. Listening to the story being narrated was so much better than reading the book on its own. The narrator's voice worked fantastically for this book.

I couldn't suspend belief enough to finish this book. The characters are flat and formulaic and

the plot is stereotypical and predictable. The narrator does not enhance the story. Her portrayal of the characters are delivered in an almost robotic tone . I can not recommend this book.

Had Promise But For Repulsive Protagonist

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The book started out with promise. The character and plotline was interesting and the build up of creepiness was great. But then the book just took a nosedive into the most depraved and disgusting scenes and I had to stop listening. The character himself turned into a stereotypical creep - masturbating to disturbing thoughts or pictures procured from facebook without the woman's knowledge or consent. That was bad enough, I thought. Then came the (very long and extremely graphic) scene of this same 30 year old character having sex with his underage neighbour. It was gratuitous and unnecessary. That was the final straw and made me sick to my stomach.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure, I haven't had the greatest run with Audiobooks lately.

How could the performance have been better?

I have commented on this narrator before, he pauses at the oddest moments which is frustrating. He sounds like a robot.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Home Is Where the Horror Is?

The long and graphic scene mentioned above where the 30 year old man has sex with his underage neighbour.

Gruesome!

Wow! What a gruesome and perverse horror story! I loved it. I am a photographer myself like the main character, Evan. That made this story even more enjoyable for me, although my taste in subject matter is a bit different. Evan prefers to photograph deformities and scars. The story is very creepy throughout and just gets more gruesome and perverse as the story continues. Excellent narration by Rick Gregory!

Whatever u do DO NOT get this so-called book. Its not a thriller its a poor version of a Childs sex story. The writer uses words like hes a teenage boy

It makes no sense. Just dont waste ur time or money and the narrator sounds robotic

If you like books about a pretentious photographer that mocks most Americans, thinks perversely about an underage girl, the description of sick porn, and Lot's of masturbation THIS is the book for you!

If not, DO NOT buy this book!!

Awesome book

Its a 3 book series which is Awesome! Very in-depth too! I absolutely love the characters! I only Wish Caroline was visible a little more. I love how the ghosts get recharged by a car battery! That was so cool. I really liked this book a lot! I looked forward to having it read to me. It took like 2 or 3 days

Hell - on Earth, and Beyond

This is an exciting, fast-paced book, with lots of action, much of it gruesome (but in a good way).

Disclaimer: I'm personally acquainted with the author, and while this is not my normal taste in reading, I like the way he tells this story. There are spiritual themes, but nobody is smacking the reader in the face with a Bible, thank God! If the mere presence of hell, demons and angels is a problem for you, think of it as being set in an alternative fantasy universe.

I have a couple of small quibbles with this, second book of the trilogy. First, the lead character of the first book, Kyle, is almost on the back burner here, but it's also okay as we get to spend more time with other interesting characters, like Napoleon, and Tamara. And for those who hate a cliff-hanger, boy howdy, you're NOT going to be happy with the ending here. There are SOME issues wrapped up, but more is carried over to the third book. (Which I am currently nose-deep in). Recommended.

Heaven or Hell? It's Your Choice

I liked the second book in the trilogy just as much as I liked the first book. The story continues with Kyle Fasano after he fell through the portal to another place. If you're not a believer in heaven or hell this is still a great book to read. The journey Kyle is chosen for has great rewards for a million others and for himself even if he doesn't believe he can complete the task. His succss in reaching the White City wil allow a million others to hear the call of repentance and it will change Kyle's heart.

Back in the world the police are still looking for the man who abducted Ashley Barton. They are starting to see this abduction may be linked to other disappearances of young women. Both story lines are exciting and fast paced. Tony Faggioli has an amazing view of what hell may be like. His view scared me more than anything I learned in parochial school. Book three is loaded into my kindle and ready to read. This is a series that needs to be read in order so be sure to start with One in a Million and get ready for a wild ride.

Amazing....

Just finished this second book in the Millionth Trilogy, wow was it a roller coaster thrill ride! Now I am on to the third and final book. I absolutely could not stop myself from finishing this series.

Ghostly dragons!

SPI is at it again! Hired by the rat fuzzbutt who resides in the shop Jack and Maren are in for a very weird ride with a baddie hiding in an attic. Enjoyed the narrator and really come to see him as the voice of Jack. A good read/listen for most readers who enjoy mystery, some language may make unsuitable for younger readers.

Disappointed

Finished this book, constantly awaiting the spooky chiller that other readers had described. It can not seriously be described as a ghost story as the other worldly goings on are overshadowed by the crumbling relationship of the two main characters. Long descriptions of their past that I felt had no bearing on what I assumed this book would be about!

It's well written but ultimately more about depressing relationships than anything supernatural, hence my utter disappointment and the feeling that I wish I hadn't bothered.

More psychological than supernatural

Would you listen to The Upstairs Room again? Why?

No I wouldn't listen again. I have mixed feelings about this book. I was expecting something a little more spooky. I really enjoyed reading about the 'weird' things that were going on, the upstairs room, the writing on the walls, Eleanor's illness, Zoe's sleepwalking - but I don't really feel like we ever got to the bottom of why that was happening?! Was it the house, was there something in the house, was it just coincidence?!

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I found the narration a bit irritating. I don't feel like the voices portrayed by the narrator fitted the characters.

Classy haunting story with excellent narration

I loved this book. Beautifully written with believable characters, so real with their flaws. I loved that the author avoided any cliché actions and emotions, although the story is quite common her character building made this novel original for me.

Not a bad book at all.

This really isnt a bad book, its written very well. Its just not what it says on the tin. Its not a ghost story, not a thriller, not even really a mystery. Its a character driven drama. Characters are well defined, realistic and interesting. Shes really managed to capture the nuances of modern life and dissatisfaction with it, which isnt easy to do. Its actually quite a pleasant read. I did feel a tad let down purely because I was hoping for a great creepy thriller of a read as the nights are drawing in, but thats down to marketing and in no way the writing. Id definitely read more from the author as theres nothing wrong with the book. The blurb and synopsis just dont reflect the novel and I doubt very much these were written by the author herself. The narrator was great too :)

Esho St. Clair is a man I want to hear a lot more about. Scott Roche has created a character I care about and who has some very special talents. His detective skills are second only to his supernatural abilities, which makes for some very interesting cases!

Roche's lyrical prose and David Robison's amazing talent for voices meld to make a complete world in my head. This book is definitely a "one-sitting" listen. I am eagerly anticipating more from both author and narrator.

Wonderfully Written and Narrated

Scott Roche's supernatural detective story is brought to life by David Robinson's superb narration. Although the stories are short their depth will engage readers and leave them wanting for more. Characters are colorful and expertly crafted. Robinson's interpretation of each character enhanced the story and added additional enjoyment. A must-listen for those interested in supernatural detective stories.

Wish I Had read this Sooner!

I had heard about this book from a few people and had never got around to reading it because I felt it wasnt my kind of book. I was so wrong! The main character St. Claire was amazing. He was a strong character that swept me away into the depths of hell and back with him. The story itself was well setup, and although the character we were first introduced to I felt was going to be the protagonist of the story, I felt sorry for in the end. I laughed, held my breath, and cheered along the characters as the story unfolded. Can't wait for more stories.

Fun romp, definitely want more

Jumping into this book was a little disorienting, as I had no real foundation of who, when, or where was involved. That said, it was easy to sink into this book. You get two excellent mysteries here, with plenty of mysticism, industry, and colorful characters.

Now that I have the grounding in Esho's life, I want more.
