Publisher's Summary:
Lutie always wanted a pet ghost - but the devil's in the details.
The Sarrazins have always stood apart from the rest of their Bayou-born neighbors. Almost as far as they prefer to stand from each other. Blessed - or cursed - with the uncanny ability to see beyond the spectral plane, Aurie has raised his children, Sol, Baz, and Lutie, in the tradition of the traiteur, finding wayward spirits and using his special gift to release them along Deadroads into the afterworld. The family, however, fractured by their clashing egos, drifted apart, scattered high and low across the continent.
But tragedy serves to bring them together. When Aurie, while investigating a series of ghastly (and ghostly) murders, is himself killed by a devil, Sol, EMT by day and traiteur by night, Baz, a traveling musician with a truly spiritual voice, and Lutie, combating her eerie visions with antipsychotics, are thrown headlong into a world of gory sprites, brilliant angels, and nefarious demons - small potatoes compared to reconciling their familial differences.
From the Louisiana swamps to the snowfields of the north and everywhere in between, Deadroads summons you onto a mysterious trail of paranormal proportions.

What a great story! Beaucoup good! Highly recommend!
It's been a while since a story captivated me like this one, and in so many different ways. First, there's the main characters, the Sarrazin family; Maman Mireille, Papa Aurie, and children Sol, Baz and Lutie. Papa is a traiteur, Sol a traiteur-in-training. In French Acadiana, the term traiteur means a faith healer, but the kind of healing that Aurie and Sol practice is not what you might expect. Baz isn't traiteur material, but has his own talents. Maman has her own abilities, as does Lutie, which eventually tear the family apart.
The story of this complicated and gifted/cursed family unfolds throughout the book, interweaving a central mystery that kept me in suspense, glued to my reader. That's the second way this book really worked for me, Riopelle's masterful merging of each main character's story with the central mystery, along with the slow reveal of the past that further developed the characters and the mystery itself. The main characters are sometimes likable, sometimes hateful, always interesting, presented in a spare, unflinching prose that matches the wintery plains where the story unfolds.
Thirdly, there's the wonderful use of French/Acadian language throughout the book, largely sans translation. Although the family hasn't lived in Louisiana for a long time, the language follows them as surely as the past, an inescapable heritage that provides both strength and burden. I found myself lingering over the words like tasting a fine wine, getting into the vowel-ly words as a character in itself. Don't know French, but found myself pretty close when guessing what was said as I read along, and then found a translation. I would LOVE to hear this book read, I think it would be a remarkable experience!
Deadroads is a very satisfying and rewarding read. I hope that Riopelle follows up with another book in the Sarrazin saga soon!
It was just okay to me, but that's just me
For some reason I had a hard time reading this book and I really can't say why. I think maybe there were just too many trippy moments in this book.
