This story is an interesting peak into an alternate reality where our pets are as capable as we are, if not more ... it's insane to hear this different type of world come alive through Clark's words, but also so fascinating. The travels of this heroic cat sure kept me on my toes!

Charming

These are stories of childhood lived in a time very different from ours. These children invented their own games and were left alone to explore their country environment. Although they had a nanny, much of their time was spent without adult supervision, and so their imaginations ran free. I doubt that modern children, relying for their entertainment on games and media created through the efforts of someone else's imagination, are as clever or as independent as the children in this book.

Classic and charming

This book is a collection of whimsical vignettes (which I read somewhere are based on the author's own childhood in rural England) describing the lazy afternoon activities of a young boy and his siblings. The author has a poetic descriptive prose that is easy to read and evokes the atmosphere of his settings beautifully. If you are an aspiring writer and you want to know how to write from a child's perspective, then this is a must read. I found these short pieces to be charming, sometimes humorous, sometimes meaningful, and they completely capture the essence of the golden summer afternoons of childhood. From a modern perspective, the time period of these stories is also perfectly placed as it is "vintage" enough to add charm without requiring us to wade through the sort of antique language that gave us all fits in school literature classes.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

A sometimes bittersweet foray through memories of innocent childhood in a more simple time. I only wish all children could continue to enjoy such innocence and fun.

The Golden Age

Even though it did get a tad bit rambling at times, I really liked it. Be prepared to become tired of it at times, but don't skip one word.

Lovely

I love Grahame's works. This book and "Dream Days" are stories told by a boy growing up and playing in the English countryside with his brother and sisters. It is all about those ideal childhood days we either remember or wish we remembered.

Hornblower-esque

It seemed like the kind of book I would enjoy, and it has been. A twelve year-old boy David is the narrator. He and his father are transported in time and space to England during the Napoleanic wars. They are pressed into service on an English naval war ship. I have greatly enjoyed reading the Horatio Hornblower books and the Jack Aubrey books about that time period. The author displays a similar understanding of the ships and naval warfare of that time, while at the same time creating a plot that held my attention. I look forward to more of his work!

A Fresh Fantasy Tableau

Shioni of Sheba Book 3: The Mad Giant by Marc Secchia is a YA fantasy about the Princess of Shebaâs slave, Shioni, and her struggles learning new magical powers while protecting her home.

Shioni has her hands full with being the guardian and longtime companion of her mistress, Annakiya. The slave girl has three helpers: a tiny winged fairy-like creature named Zi, the giant Talaku who is a generalâs bewitched son cursed with a growing mind sickness, and the magnificent royal horse named Thunder.

Her magical powers are growing. Shioni hears animal thoughts, senses their emotions, and even talks with them. This is a witchâs power, and Shioni must hide it or suffer the painful consequences. Even worse, a lighthearted race between the fleet Talaku and her astride Thunder is a disaster. It lands them in the middle of a band of Wasabi warriors scouting the Shebaâs country for an invasion. Walking through a trap-filled secret cave passage in the mountains and battling the Wasabi at a bridge ambush are a few of Shioniâs adventures.

The Mad Giant is a delightful romp filled with fun characters. Lions, hyenas, elephants, and other African creatures are a welcome alternative to the usual fantasy fauna. Shioniâs clever spell to defeat the enemy magicians during the Wasabi battle is a satisfying climax to the story. Secchia has done an excellent job creating a fresh fantasy tableau, populating it with relatable heroes and villains, and mixing them together with a twisty plot. The Mad Giant is a recommended fantasy story for middle grades.

enjoyed this one the most

The Mad Giant: Shioni of Sheba is the third installment in the Shioni series. I have also read the first two. It continues the adventures of a young white slave girl named Shioni in the kingdom of West Sheba.

Of the three books I enjoyed this one the most. The first one had a good amount of adventure and introduced the characters. The second book felt like it lulled a bit since so many of the pages were dedicated to character development but that has paid off in this third book which is full of action and drama.
