Solid potboiler

If hard drinking, salty semi private eyes in a tropical setting are your thing, you'll enjoy Sleeping Dogs Lie. Clearly the author has a feel for Key West and likes to eat and drink since he spent far more time describing locations and food and alcoholic beverages than working out a compelling (or believable) detective yarn. (Seems likely that forensics agents would question and work out the details of the climax and likely bring the unlicensed gun toting main character up on charges) But there are some amiable flourishes, chiefly a dopey, unresponsive dog named Buddy. And the Florida Keys setting is a unique touch, like I said. Above all, the cast of characters is memorable and are expertly brought to life by the narrator Alex Robertson, who seems born to read audio books.

A fun summer summer read with a great narration

This is a humorous audio book with some great one liners. The narrator, Alex Robertson has a fantastic voice that makes this book even better. I'm looking forward to hearing more of these stories.

I thought it would never end

Has been a long time since I have read or listened to a book this bad. I almost dumped it after 1st 25%, but didn't. Wish I had.

Juvenile, poorly written and poorly narrated.

Muliable Murders and Killers

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, If you enjoy one of Lauren Carr books. You will want to read the others. They are all that good.

What did you like best about this story?

It was intriguing and enjoyable. You were always looking and guessing who might be the killer or killers. You want to solve the mysteries and deaths.

Have you listened to any of James C. Lewiss other performances before? How does this one compare?

I might have but I am not 100%. How can you compare one book to another one narrator to another book he did.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, But that did not happen. Though that would be something I would like to do with one of her books. I just do not do it.

GOOD. ENJOYABLE

Again a good story from Lauren Carr. Well performed by James C. Lewis. The murder plot was good and the it was a very intriguing mystery. Good cast of characters and as usual Gnarly did his part in catching the killer. I hope there will more books for this series.

If you like Janet Evanovich, you will like Donna Glaser.

I have become so addicted to the Letty Whitaker books over the last year. I've read them all and then sit impatiently awaiting Mrs.Glaser to write new ones. This newest book is no exception. Letty is funny, a little smart assy, and always finding her way into trouble no matter how she tries to avoid it. As she begins a new phase to her career as a part time school counselor, trouble manages to find her there as well. If you like Janet Evanovich (I do too), and you like books that are in a series (I love continuing characters), then you will like Donna Glaser's books as well. There are already 5 of them so they will keep you in the read for a little while. Then you can join me in waiting for new ones. :o)

I very much enjoy reading books by this author

I very much enjoy reading books by this author. I am always waiting in anticipation for her to release new novels. This one did not disappoint! This is the 5th book in the 12 Step series featuring Letty and, in true Letty form, we find her in the middle of an unexpected and crazy mystery. The plot line was great, the twists were good, and I didn't want to put the book down!

I totally love this series!!

This series is so much fun. The suspense keeps the reader on edge and the humor sneaks up and makes you laugh out loud. Letty's internal dialog is hilarious, and her struggles make her character easy to root for.

The Lies We Tell....Another Great Book

Donna White Glaser has done it again....written a great book that kept me interested and guessing about who done it. I find the female protagonist charming. It seems like Letty gets involved in murder just by doing her job. She is working as a high school therapist in a new program that allows the students to see her during school hours. Her first client is the principal's daughter. Letty has no idea of the trouble to come.

The plot is well thought out and involves an odd group of people who call themselves "furries." I'll let you discover what they are. The characters are fully fleshed out, each one distinctly different. The storyline moves quickly with just the right amount of suspense, humor and romance.

Excellent

This was a great book. it was a well planned and well developed mystery with lots of twist and turns. I could not put it down. Letty is doing her best to stick with AA and live a good life. Unfortunately, life keeps getting in the way. I like her relationship with Eli and Beth.

Ilysa Ramsay was taking the art world by storm when she is suddenly killed and her last painting disappears. Ten years later, Mac Faraday receives a package from a questionable collector that had a soft spot for his mother Robin Chase. The package is the missing Ilysa Ramsay painting and before he knows whats happening people are trying to buy it from him and breaking into his house.

At the same time Joshua Thornton is a military lawyer and detective. He is on vacation with no kids in the house and gets a call from Cameron Gates, a serial killer. He was blamed for one victim that was never identified and it has bothered him since he didnt kill her. He asks Joshua to look into Jane Doe. Joshua meets up with the detective that worked the case and together they find themselves in Deep Creek Lake.

Mac has his hands full when a missing painting shows up on this door steps. Mac has a bunch of rich people that act that way and are more worried about money than family values. I loved Gnarly and the toll bridge, too funny.

But then you get introduced to Joshua Thornton. I read the first two Thorny Rose mysteries and really enjoyed his son and Macs daughter. He did a great job in Shades of Murder and I cant wait to read his mystery series.

This was another great Mac Faraday mystery. I loved the twists and the real reason the painting disappeared. Once again I didnt really know who the killer was and was caught off guard by the reveal. I love these mysteries and recommend them to everyone.

Murphy's Law

Mick Murphy was having a good day. It didn't last long because things really started going downhill for him quickly. To start with, he saw a friend fall to his death, and being a journalist, he did what came naturally.

This fast paced, well written thriller takes Murphy on a wild ride through Key West. The characters are well developed and make for a compelling story.

The narration really gives life to Mick and his friends. It's smoothly done and well voiced.

If you could sum up Free Range Institution in three words, what would they be?

A thrill ride

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

From the opening lines, this book grabbed my attention and didn't let up. Start with well described locations, clearly drawn characters, add in a dash of drug running and cover it with some political corruption and you've got a classic page turner.

What about Dave Cruses performance did you like?

Dave Cruse does a wonderful job of giving voice to the myriad of characters that populate this mystery-thriller set in Key West. Being from the south myself, it's refreshing when a narrator can deliver characters that showcase the subtleties of the southern voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book cover says mystery, but this book is more of a thriller. With more than a few jaw dropping "Wow I didn't see that coming" moments.

Wide Range Imitation!

Free Range Institution by Michael Haskins is ten and a half hours of good fun, with a twisty plot, sharp surprises, a quirky setting, and interesting characters whom one would like to encounter again. The audiobook is lighthearted fare for long drives on interstate highways, which is where I listened to it. Narrator Dave Cruse has had a long career in radio broadcasting, and he read the book's narrative and descriptive passages well, as I expected he would. Free Range Institution is his first audiobook, and he produced solid vocal characterizations across a wide range. He can pass for a self-doubting, middle-aged, white American man, an old Irish former priest, and an African-American federal law enforcement officer. He's also a surprisingly sexy wise Latina. I couldn't give his narration five stars, because I'm a Simon Vance snob.

Shallow Plot leads to inevitable disappointment

As an avid and dedicated listener to all of John Sandford's novels, I was non-plussed by the shallow and contrived plot for this latest installment of the Lucas Davenport series. In short, LD -who is now freelancing - is engaged to protect a female presidential candidate in the election run up. Threats have surfaced that someone wants the candidate dead and it's LD's job to find them and avert the assassination. Hmmm. I've just written a plot that has been written a thousand times before and in this particular case, there aren't any twists and turns to change that template from the mundane to the interesting.Hence the reason for the low rating.

Davenport is back!

As a huge fan of John Sandford's books, and having read all the Lucas Davenport and Virgil Flowers books, I've been enjoying experiencing them again on audio. I've worked my way through the Flowers book, finding Eric Conger's narration hugely enjoyable.

I decided to start listening to the Davenport books with the most recent, which I read when it came out a few months back. I was a bit nervous at first, having got so used to Conger's voice, but soon found fresh enjoyment to be had in the unique and excellent style of Richard Ferrone.

As to the book itself, this is May favourite Davenport from the past three or four years. A great read, and very enjoyable. Also, as the character has embarked on a new section of his life, it's a great jumping in point for new readers.

Fabulous

I do long distance driving for work and was happy to find Lucas Davenport! I listened to all of the books narrated by Richard Ferrone.. This book as with the other 26 in the series was spectacular.. I love that all the books were read by the same man. Richard Ferrone has the perfect voice as Lucas Davenport. They say it's not important to read the books in order but I would as you learn to know the life of Lucas Davenport and how he grows.. Great series.. Can't wait for Golden Prey to come to audible!

5 ways to kill a man

brilliant - I really enjoyed his book - it kept me guessing right to the end. Great imagination, beautifully told and good narrator. I will look out more for his work. Well done

Interesting and entertaining with some editing issues

The story itself took a little time to grab me, but then moved at a good pace and was entertaining. Narration was good but the recording is poorly edited; there are some passages that repeat, which is a little irritating.

Fair story but Poor editing

Fairly decent story marred by some poor editing. There were a few paragraphs particularly in chapters 6 & 7 that were repeated, for example one paragraph relating to a fire & the possibility it was due to a chip pan. You found that the story would plod along getting then the narrator woukd repeat the last paragraph again which was very off putting. Also the narration would suddenly stop then start again with the last word or words repeated again. Other than these little niggles it was a an engrossing story if a little far fetched in places.

Lacklustre

Whole story seemed to grind to a standstill half an hour before the end. Lacking in any sort of sparkle in those closing stages.

Non existent plot twists

Absolute crap. The most predictable boring book i have had in a long time. No twists and the most clichéd charachters you will ever have.

A complete waste of time and oxygen

Absolutely terrible. Bad storyline, melodramatic, worst possible accents. Don't waste your time on this dross

Good, but...

A good rolling story, but a few strange things 1) the narrator sounded like an English person putting on a fake Aussie accent. 2) weird use of some Americanisms like "hood" of a car and -cringe! - "dove" instead of dived. 3) The MOST drug free places in Australia are mine sites!

Riveting

Great story ...brilliant narrative. Made me feel like I was right there in the story. Highly recommended.

Job for the 'Mystery wagon'

Started out good, but limited to a desert mine camp. You are given 4 or 5 suspects, and it is one of them. A bit like a Scooby Doo mystery. The main character is very good.
