    ENJOYABLE AS EXPECTED!
I love this series. Melena is growing in strength and her determination to save her lover, Lucas from purgatory succeeded. I admire their love for each other. I am worried for Micah and I hope the next book will find him safe and sound.
Another great book in the series
I really like this series because it's a supernatural one but it's not like the other books I've read or listened to. It has all of the supernatural creatures but the story is easy to understand and distinguishes the differences between the sups
    very good read.
narration excellent. story great. racy in parts but that's ok. Couldn't get the short story or the second novella but it still flowed.
    Interesting, but...
What would have made Darkness Divides better?
I don't know, the previous books are so wonderful, and this book is a bit boring
Did Cris Dukehart do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes, he try to give emotions to each one.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Darkness Divides?
i wouldn't cut, but I should tell to the author to give more attention to the others characters.
    Book 3.5 is attached
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Mel's trip to Purgatory Really I am only writing this to say that book 3.5 in included in this as a short story after Darkness Divides.

    Publisher's Summary:
From New York Times best seller and science fiction and fantasy mistress of adventure Mercedes Lackey, Book 4 in the pulse-pounding Secret World saga of modern-day humans with superpowers.
Destroying the Thulian North American Headquarters has not made life easier for ECHO, or the world. The Thulians continue their attacks, first in unpredictable incursions, then with another all-out assault on ECHO, orchestrated against ECHO headquarters across the world. Dominic Verdigris has not given up on his effort to obtain The Seraphym for himself, in order to use her to avert his own fate at the hands of the Thulians. Nor have the heroes of ECHO and the CCCP found life anything but harder. Belladonna's duties have increased a thousand-fold, and now she has responsibility for the lives of every metahuman in ECHO on her conscience. Obviously using the intelligence gathered from the raid on the North American Thulian base to find the main Headquarters is of paramount importance - but once it is found, can she manage to convince the armies of the world to follow ECHO into an all-out attack?
Then Red Saviour risks everything on a risky gambit of her own: send her wolves of the CCCP to find the Thulian Headquarters, despite the dangers, and despite the consequences of blowing everything on this hazardous gambit that could very well end, not in victory, but with the world in flames.

    Awesome
This gets better with each book, can't wait for next one. The story never gets stale.
    Excellent 4th installment
Loved the first 20 hours, then got to an epic 1-2 hour battle and...battle fatigue! I just can't care about blocking and tactics for that long. But, well, that's what the pause button is for.
    Looking forward to book 5!

Best book from the robot firefighter genre
An interesting look at the impacts of technology on firefighting. Taken from the perspective of a firefighter, husband, and father Johnny. You experience the firsthand account of a changing world that moves quickly through the career of the Boulder, Colorado firefighter. The book has a little bit of everything, but it doesn't delve too deeply into any one area to exclude anyone from enjoying this. It has some romance, some action, some drama, and deals with a science fiction topic. The author moves through the technical topics in a way that gives the reader the information they need to know but wonât bore the technically savvy reader with details.
You get to grow up and grow old with Johnny as he experiences an upheaval in his world. Is it for the better? Thatâs you for you to decide. This book will make you think about the implications of a changing world on Johnny's life and how it will relate to your own life. A fun read that never gets slow.
Very fun and exciting tale- a great book exploring the future of fire fighting!
The Last of the Firefighters is a fast-paced tale following the lives of 2 fire fighters which explores fire fighting, relationships, and the rapid technological advancements our future holds. It is a satisfying story with many creative and exciting predictions on the future. It is a true page turner and a must-read for firefighters and science fiction fans.
I highly recommend this excellent novel!
Another great book by Ed Daniels
The Last of the Firefighters appeals to a much wider audience than just the firefighting crowd. Although the storyline takes you through the probable technological advances in firefighting through one man's career, it has much more depth than just that one topic. It has a bit of romance, action, and science fiction in every chapter; something for everyone. Without giving away too much, I will say that this book makes you think long and hard about the impact that technology has, and will have, on our lives. After you read The Last of the Firefighters you will be asking, when can I read the next book by Ed Daniels?!
Great firefighting action and near-future technology make for a fun read
I enjoyed Ed Daniels' first book, Fire Chief: The Story of a Volunteer Firefighter, and looked forward to reading this one.

    horribly narrated and edited
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone who doesn't care about details, background information, setting and didn't listen to the first two audio books.
If youve listened to books by Richard Morgan before, how does this one compare?
Bottom of the list. I usually enjoy the audio books of Richard K. Morgan, his fantasy novels as well as his scifi but this one was just awful, especially since I took a liking to the first two.
And what's with the editing? Echo sound effects for flashbacks? Why? I had to check my file at the first scene, just to realize it is edited to sound like this. Why the inconsistencies in a trilogy? Highly unnecessary.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
If you can't even get the protagonists name right, you might as well decline the job and choose a different book. The author spent a few lines in his earlier books explaining the pronunciation and origin of his character's name, the narrator just didn't care. The setting of the story has a strong Japanese influence but he couldn't get any of those words right either. Every time the I heard the word yaKUza made me cringe and it didn't stop there. I'm not sure if it was the author's choice to find a new narrator, I really liked Todd McLaren's interpretation of Takeshi and his attitude. Just the right amount of "not giving a fuck", pardon my language. Dufris' character interpretations, especially those of the female characters, all sound cookie-cutter-basic.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Woken Furies?
I wouldn't chance it. The author wanted to tell a story, and even though I liked the later parts better, because I had an interest in those plot elements from prior books, the author likes to keep the reader guessing. I'd have liked greater detail regarding the changing environment, since the protagonist had a long and eventful life at this point but we don't read much about the changes in the universe.

    Good book
This book was really exciting. I read it before letting my 11 yo son read it. It's super exciting, casual 'romance' (appropriate for age), lots of fighting without gory descriptions. I recommend as a cheap pretty quick read. Glad to see it's a series. 5/26/13 revision: I based this review on Fire Mage. After reading more of Sun Mage, I feel the need to add that there is mention of naked women in passing (no graphic description), and the description of the violence in the Underworld is a little more than necessary (severed head on stakes). A little worse than Harry Potter book, more like the Harry Potter movies.
Amazing! Classic Fantasy for all ages!!
Sun Mage is book 2 in the Blacklight Chronicles written by John Forrester and it was AWESOME! I had the pleasure of reading both books in the series pretty much back to back and everything that I was disappointed with (which wasnt much), in the first one was forgotten. The fast pace for this book, like the first one, makes it a great read for pre-teens, teens and adults. A classic high fantasy novel with gods, magic, friendship and deception. We start the novel with Talis, Mara, Nikulo and Rikar aboard a slave ship uncertain of their futures and it just roller coasters from there. I literally could not put Sun Mage down and I read it in about 2 hours! The message of the book is clear. In light there is darkness and in darkness light and one can't survive without the other. It surprised me to find this kind of depth in the book. I wasn't expecting it and it was a very good surprise!
As for the characters, it was quite interesting to see them grow and change. Talis and Mara growing closer and then ever their bond almost unbreakable now. While Nikulo and Rikar fall apart. I felt sorry for Rikar in his descent, you know he's an idiot and there's nothing you can do about it. As for Nikulo I really enjoyed him in this book. In the first one I was indifferent he didn't seem special but it was cool to see what different powers he had and to watch him struggle to choose between a friend an whats right.
A lot of the questions that I had in the first book were answered (thank you), and of course it leaves the reader with more questions. Which I love. The cliffhanger ending was amazing and I found myself yelling at the book "You can't end it that way!" I love it when an author offers you closure and then throws a curve ball on the last page!
I give this book 5 Ravens and now I am DYING to read the next one.

He makes frequent appearances on radio and TV. He has won the Bram Stoker, International Horror Guild, British Fantasy, and British Science Fiction Awards and been nominated for the Hugo and World Fantasy Awards.
    Critic Reviews:
"That oh-so-unassuming title does not equip you for the journey you're about to undertake. Immersive, claustrophobic and utterly wonderful" (M.R. Carey, New York Times bestselling author of "The Girl With All the Gifts")
"Kim Newman gets inside your head like pollen off a field of wildflowers; the pleasant idyllic turns full of suffocating dread. Thoroughly enjoyable, master storytelling." (Lauren Beukes, bestselling author of "The Shining Girls")
    Members Reviews:
    Riffin' on the Classics
In the hands of a mere mortal, this story would be average, just average, really average, assuming it didn't just disintegrate outright. Kim Newman makes me love and hate this story at the same time, and I honestly can't decide which. Even so, I have to brand this a success.
Picture, if you will, the classic Victorian era ghost story, ramped up with 20th century horror movie elements designed to creep out modern audiences without being truly scary. It's a psychological carrot that lures you in with sheer atmosphere before the really dastardly stuff begins. Newman is a walking encyclopedia of horror and pop culture, and he uses it to full advantage. His writing style is excellent, per usual. He makes you love the ghosts. He makes you love the Hollow. It feels like a great place to live, completely backwards of nearly every other haunted house. Usually only the characters believe it's wonderful, and the reader knows better. Newman makes you feel it too, even when you know better.
The odd thing is this. The family being haunted is dysfunctional by its very nature, which makes this a refreshing modern take on the old tried-and-true, however... I wanted to slap every member of that family. They were SO well written as to be juvenile and/or borderline obnoxious at times; again, it's a hallmark of just how good Newman is. These characters play out like the instantly identifiable protagonists you might find in a lesser YA novel, only three-dimensional and fully-formed. They have everyday, real world problems and attitudes to match. As a result, I found myself cheering on the ghosts in much the same way I cheered on Jack Nicholson in Kubrick's version of The Shining. It sounds wrong, but there it is.
And the ghosts didn't disappoint. As predictable and lamentable as the people can be, the ghosts keep you guessing. These ghosts are able to find and use the inner demons of their targets with laser precision. For me, that's the selling point of this story.

    Sweet vampires
I really enjoyed the sweet vampire story. I found the characters engaging and the story a solid romance. I don't mind instalove within the trope of soulmates, but there were a few eye rolling moments. I think suspending belief is the best way to enjoy this story. The narrator give a A+ performance with his soft British accent for Simon. I was a little disappointed he didn't do a New Zealand accent for Ben, but it in no way took away from the story. I think you have to listen/read to book first in the series as it gives a lot of background and world building. Also, it introduces you to the cast of men who will appear in future books. I look forward to Book 2, Forge's story.
Fascinating beginning to a great series
Ben is a foreign student studying in America from New Zealand. Hes a photographer and he loves to spend hours out and about taking photos of everything and anything. One day he sees a man who catches his eye and after seeing him several times in a row decides to approach him.
Simon is a vampire, over a hundred years old, who sees Ben and identifies him as his potential soul mate. He doesnt immediately try to approach Ben, but lets Ben come to him. Though Simon is lonely and happy for a chance at a life-companion, there is much in his past to suggest Ben might be better off without Simon.
Eventually, the two do meet and neither can stop their attraction from blossoming into a relationship and then love. Simon must come clean and confess what he is and Ben has to accept the monster that lives inside Simon.
In the meantime, Flint, their little town, is being subjected to a string of serial murders involving both humans and vampires. Together, Simon, Ben and three of Simons paranormal friends, work to solve the murders while keeping everyone they know as safe as possible.
It all culminates when someone from Simons past re-surfaces, trying to take Ben out of the picture.
Simon has to overcome his deadly addictions to save Ben and Ben has to trust that Simon is more than a victim of his desires.
    **
This is a unique take on the vampire theme. There is a lot of the typical lore, but some parts are newly constructed.

Mercy would dictate cancellation after season 3
Z2136 hopefully, completes what will only be a trilogy. Written in the style of a made for TV mini-series with each book containing a series of episodes to comprise a single season, this is basically Hunger Games with Zombies. Book 3 doesn't so much bring resolution and closure as it simply runs out of things to say and do. The unlucky Lovecraft family, now only brother and sister spend most of their time trying to to connect with one another with disconnected battles against zombies, psychotic maniacs, and barren baddies. Jonah was successful in the last installment in damaging city 1 and his old boss is forced to take over all the cities.
The story breaks down on several levels. Everyone in a position of power is either corrupt, demented, or megaomanical with almost everyone else either a loyal follower or a freelance sociopath. The backstory for the zombies makes no sense whatsoever with the intention in the 1970's to turn the world into zombies while a small cadre of selected people ride out the storm underground. The tale ends with the supposedly upbeat tempo of the one individual who has done the most to persecute the Lovecraft lineage finally seeing the light and dedicating his life to... not persecuting Lovecrafts anymore.
The narration is well done with a good range of voices and nice pacing.
    Good storyline
I really enjoyed this series . It was well performed. Very different from other zombie stories

    Some Amazing stuff Right here.
This book isn't for everyone. It takes a special listener to fully appreciate Drakes work. His descriptions of the many battles which his "Ranks of Bronze" under-go almost perfectly describes the military vibe that only those who have an appreciation for the finer points of war can thuroughly graps... you feel as though your mixed up in the sweat and blood of the battlefield as the rank and file moves it's ugly head onward to battle. This is a work of genius that your average twilight reader can fully grasp it's brilliant significance.
    Truly a must read :)
the story was bad real bad
this is one of those times the sequel is better then the oeiginal. I read the other two books first then I found this audio book. I bought it on the strength of the reader. bad story great reader.
    loved it. gripping story
another great story. Drake create another great set of personalities. wished there was another extention to this book.
    Meh
Started out with a great premise. Plot development was slightly lacking. Hard to get into the characters. Overall just okay.
Normally I live David Drake's writing
But not this time. It is an interesting idea. It was hard to follow and must be setting something up in future books. But until those books emerge, this as a stand-alone book was a bit boring.

An excellent read of an excellent book
If you could sum up The Dragon Never Sleeps in three words, what would they be?
    Complex and fascinating world
What about Fleet Coopers performance did you like?
The precision of his read is perfect and it makes this book come alive page after page

I couldn't stop listening to it.
    Any additional comments?
this is a book that doesn't leave you with an "average feeling". you hate it or you are fascinated by it. This is a very interesting and complex world Glen Cook knows how to build. Everything is in different shades of color and has its own reasons for acting. Plus this is a self contained structured story : a beginning and an end that goes with it. .
The read gives it more depth as it had the power of the voice. I seldom comment on books but really this read is outstanding.
    A big disappointment .
This book was a great big disappointment, Story line very confusing, Mr.Cooper's narration was good. but the material he had to read was, well lets just say. I was lost within 5 minutes.
    NARRATION FLOP
The Narrator made this story too difficult to follow. I should have tried a sample first. Mostly, Cook writes a good story, however, with this presentation who could tell.
Wonderful book ruined by bad narrator
This is a very interesting world and it is a pity it is a stand alone. I enjoyed the story and the rich universe Cook created. The narration is another matter. I do not know what would make anyone think overly heavy accents (and not good ones at that) would be a good idea. If you can stand it this book is worth the listen. If I had it to do over I'd have bought the paper version.
