Publisher's Summary:
Julius Caesar is dead, assassinated on the senate floor, and the glory that is Rome has been torn in two. Octavian, Caesar's ambitious great-nephew and adopted son, vies with Marc Antony and Cleopatra for control of Caesar's legacy. As civil war rages from Rome to Alexandria and vast armies and navies battle for supremacy, a secret conflict may shape the course of history.
Juba, Numidian prince and adopted brother of Octavian, has embarked on a ruthless quest for the Shards of Heaven, lost treasures said to possess the very power of the gods - or the one God. Driven by vengeance, Juba has already attained the fabled Trident of Poseidon, which may also be the staff once wielded by Moses. Now he will stop at nothing to obtain the other Shards, even if it means burning the entire world to the ground.
Caught up in these cataclysmic events and the hunt for the Shards are a pair of exiled Roman legionnaires, a Greek librarian of uncertain loyalties, assassins, spies, slaves...and the 10-year-old daughter of Cleopatra herself.
Michael Livingston's The Shards of Heaven reveals the hidden magic behind the history we know and commences a war greater than any mere mortal battle.

Suspenseful, intriguing adventure in the Roman Empire!
One of the best books I've read all year. For a debut novel, it is fantastic. If you love history and fantasy, and if you've always wondered about the existence of God or whether Cleopatra was a cool chick or not, this is the book for you. Two thumbs up!

I was hooked from the first page, and couldn't put it down until I got caught reading it at work. The interlacing storylines and intriguing characters kept me glued to the pages, and I enjoyed it so much that I had to buy several copies to gift to friends. The Praetorians' story line was definitely my favorite. I can't wait for the next book!
I loved the action
I loved the action, suspense, intrigue, character development, strong female characters, impeccable grammar, and the interweaving of history, fantasy, and religious contemplation (by some of the characters) -- definitely a page turner!
Excellent read!
I loved the weaving of historical and fantasy. The factual background really helped to make the story come alive for me. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
History seasoned with magic
This is an exquisite merging of history and fantasy. The author, who previously has had only short fiction published, is an associate professor specializing in the middle ages.
The book's in three parts: The trident of Poseidon, The Battle of Actium, and The fall of Egypt. I recommend reading one part at a time and let it soak in before starting the next part. It is quite heavy on the history, starting immediately after the assassination of Julius Ceasar. While Mark Anthony and Cleopatra are characters in the book, the main characters have names of real people who are mentioned in historical records, a couple of whom very little is known. A glossary at the end of the book tells us what is known about the characters while also listing the very minor characters who are unknown to history.
The writing style tends to be a bit professorial and I actually liked that. There's lots of narrative here, and less dialogue than you'll find in most novels.
