    Publisher's Summary:
Following the bloody war between the Athenian Republic and the Pruessen Empire, an uneasy peace has settled over the region of space known as The Tunguska Fault.
The Telford family's independent trading vessel, the Belinda, is captured by Pruessen slavers and the crew forced into a life of brutal servitude. Their desperate bid for freedom succeeds but a tragic price is paid.
Years pass and Nathan Telford, fighting the nightmares of his past and yearning for revenge, joins the Athenian Navy. His first posting is aboard the warship Truculent, patrolling the northern quarantine zone beyond which lurks the Empire.
Answering a distress call from a beleaguered freighter, the routine mission becomes a desperate fight for survival. The Pruessans are once again testing the defenses of the Republic and this time they have technology far in advance of the last war.
It is left to Nathan, three untried middies, and a disgruntled petty officer to try and avert a looming disaster.
With their high-tech weapons rendered useless and facing overwhelming odds, Nathan risks everything on a brave, hastily conceived gamble.

    Fantastic!!!
What does Keith Michaelson bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He really brought the story to life.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
This book is really a 4.5. I wish we could do half ratings. Love books that can bring out all the emotions while including tons of action. I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.
    A very good read
Wow just wow! Nicely done. Way to go on the why the main character is so driven and doing it in such a manner as to drive it home but refrain from being too graphic and leave some of it to the readers imagination. I look forward to listening to more of this series and any other books.
    Excellent Military Scifi
If you could sum up Uncommon Purpose in three words, what would they be?
    Just totally awesome
What was one of the most memorable moments of Uncommon Purpose?
The time Nathan had growing up on the "ranch" or whatever were actually some of my more favorite parts
Have you listened to any of Keith Michaelsons other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, Keith did a wonderful job of maintaining a balance throughout the narration - he managed to match and evoke the emotional content of each scene while continuing to engage the listener
    Any additional comments?
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Wanted to listen straight through!
This story MOVES! This isn't like a lot of space themed operas where everything is on a single ship. They are space battles, colonies, opposing forces all vying for control, and young Nathan Telford, the last of his family, navigating currents of hate and forces he can't control.
I'm looking forward to some of the forces introduced but not fully developed coming to fruition in the next book! Great concepts with some mystery that blends a bit of "magic" into what feels, at first, like a traditional space journey.

Kit has been projecting into other species for seven years. Longer than anyone else at ShenCorp. Longer than any of the scientists thought possible. But lately she has the feeling that when she jumps, she isn't alone....
Since she was 12, Kit has been a phenomenaut, her consciousness projected into the bodies of lab-grown animals for the purpose of research. Kit experiences a multitude of other lives - fighting and fleeing, predator and prey - always hoping, but never quite believing, that her work will help humans better understand the other species living alongside them.
But after a jump as an urban fox ends in disaster, Kit begins to suspect that those she has trusted for her entire working life may be out to cause her harm. And as she delves deeper into the events of that night, her world begins to shift in ways she had never thought possible.
    Critic Reviews:
"A work of intelligent, thought-provoking, spine-chilling science fiction that will delight and terrify in equal measure. Exciting, horrifying and compelling." (Jack Wolf, author of The Tale of Raw Head and Bloody Bones)

    Not my cup of tea
Let me start by saying, I'm not a Sci-Fi fan generally. I got this book because I thought my love of animals and interest in them would be enough for me to enjoy this book. It wasn't. With that being said, if you like Sci-Fi, far out books, this may be for you. I also listened to this book rather than read it. That was a problem because it was way too complex, in my opinion, for an audiobook. I couldn't follow it. It jumped all around and confused me countless times. I tried to rewind several times, but that's tough to do in the car. This was one instance where I thought it might make a better movie than a book because the visuals would have helped me. I thought about quitting several times, but I kept thinking it would all come together for me in the end. It didn't. I was still confused and some things weren't answered for me. Some were, but I still didn't understand the answers when I got them. Credit to the author for the concept and the research. I'm sure some will enjoy it. Overall, this book was just over my head and wasn't my cup of tea.
    Great book for animal lovers
The author communicates so beautifully the essence of the animals she writes about in a very clever way combining a unique plot with very well developed characters. It was very entertaining. At the beginning of the book it was hard to tell who the narrator/author was speaking for, but I was quickly able to pick up and get into the perspective. The narrator does a beautiful performance. It was a very entertaining story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend it!
    Wonderful!
Loved it! The author let you feel what it might be like to be human consciousness in an animals body. I wish she had been a wolf! Great idea for a story. Made you think. This book was one that I was sad when it came to an end. Great narration.
    Ambitious Story Telling
I am intrigued enough by The Many Selves of Katherine North that will certainly read it again and recommend it to adult friends and family. It is science fiction but not the usual sort. There is no fantasy in this story apart from the occasional delusions of Kit and her fellow teenage "phenomonauts ".

She didn't want to have to make extra trips back to base because of equipment failure. She didn't want to become a mining tutor for a group of newcomers from Earth. And she certainly didn't want to get entangled in corporate conspiracies, piracy, kidnapping, murder, and worst of all...politics.

    Any additional comments?
By the time I got through 90% of the book, I knew I was going to return it, so I just stopped there. Juvenile is the best descriptor I can come up with. It's a hair under just ok. Female protagonist is over the top on the 'girl bad ass' stereotype. Male bad guys are over the top on the 'white country redneck' stereotype. Story itself is shallow and predictable. If you want a good sci fi 'small community that takes care of itself' story, try Heinlein's The Moon is a harsh mistress.

The conclusion of the story could serve as an introductory point for several more stories as huge and technically complex machinery is left no more than superficially explored, including a planet sized information library millions of years old. I would enjoy a more detailed perception of these fictional machines by AI fictional machines 10k years or so down the timeline

    Publisher's Summary:
A picaresque tale of minor league baseball - in an alternate Great Depression America full of wild magic.
Since the Big Bubble popped in 1929, life in the United States hasn't been the same. Hotshot wizards will tell you nothing's really changed, but then again, hotshot wizards aren't looking for honest work in Enid, Oklahoma. No paying jobs at the mill, because zombies will work for nothing. The diner on Main Street is seeing hard times as well, because a lot fewer folks can afford to fly carpets in from miles away.
Jack Spivey's just another down-and-out trying to stay alive, doing a little of this and a little of that. Sometimes that means making a few bucks playing ball with the Enid Eagles, against teams from as many as two counties away. And sometimes it means roughing up rival thugs for Big Stu, the guy who calls the shots in Enid.
But one day Jack knocks on the door of the person he's supposed to "deal with" - and realizes that he's not going to do any such thing to the young lady who answers. This means he needs to get out of the reach of Big Stu, who didn't get to where he is by letting defiance go unpunished. Then the House of Daniel comes to town - a brash band of barnstormers who'll take on any team and whose antics never fail to entertain.
Against the odds, Jack secures a berth with them. Now they're off to tour an America that's as shot through with magic as it is dead broke. Jack will never be the same - nor will baseball.

    Surprisingly Cute and Fun
This is a very, very odd book. If you're looking for crazy whackadoodle magic and dragons and witches everywhere, this is not the sort of book you're looking for. 95% of this book is a straitlaced normal baseball story. Every once in a great while there will be a supernatural interlude, like a player getting attacked by a werewolf on his way back to his hotel for instance. But almost none of the supernatural stuff intrudes upon the baseball. Luckily, I like baseball. I can't imagine what this book would be like if you didn't like baseball. Probably not very fun. But this book was fun for me. Most everything I've read of Turtledove concerns pretty dark subject matter, war and mass murder etc. This is an easy going slice-of-life baseball story. Who was this book written for? I have no idea. I can't imagine there are a lot of people who are both fans of magical realism and semiprofessional baseball in the 1930s era southeastern united states. But even if this wasn't exactly written for me in mind, I still enjoyed it a good deal. The narration is good. The reader sounds like he's reading the lines for the first time as he says them. That sounds like a bad thing. But since this is ostensibly supposed to be the recollections of a salt-of-the-earth mediocre baseball player, the awkwardness actually works to enhance the story. The narration shouldn't be eloquent, the POV is a hayseed, low on sophistication but high on enthusiasm, and Joey Collins plays that part to a T in this.
    Surprising
A funny thing happened while listening to The House of Daniel, it turned out to be fun. Fun as in listening or watching a baseball game. The story is seem less, although the only potential drawback is the magic elements but hey they were also funny sidebars.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Bloody Conflict is long over. The lands are now controlled by despots, crooked cattle barons, energy hoarders, and anyone with enough might to keep the local folks under control.
For Clay Macaulay, none of that matters as he roams the land in a war machine from a time gone by. He wants nothing to do with small desert towns or brutal dictators. He only has his sights set on a new life. Unfortunately for Clay, too many ruthless people want what he has. They want the war machine he pilots. They want the battle mech that shouldn't exist anymore.
    They want his Fighting Iron.
But they will have to pry Clay's cold, dead body out of that pilot's seat before they can take it from him. And he plans on fighting them every massive mech step of the way!
A far-future mech western, Fighting Iron is a rip-roaring sci-fi adventure filled with six-shooters, plasma canons, rough and rowdy saloon brawls, showdowns, corrupt landowners, and 50-foot battle machines ready to crush everything in their path!

    Any additional comments?
This book was a science fiction and western, set in a post-apocalyptic time and centered around fighting robots. There was lots of action, great detail, and overall, a fun read. It is not for the faint of heart because some of the scenes did get a little gory .
    Fighting Iron
    Any additional comments?
I've enjoyed this authors zombie series. The author is really talented at creating witty and unique characters and the world building is amazing. The author left me wanting to know more about the world and characters he created. The narration is also great.
A futuristic western with huge robots...
A futuristic western with huge robots and an even bigger story
    4.5 out of 5 stars
Fighting Iron is a story about Clay and his Fighting Iron. They want it and he will do almost anything to prevent them from taking it. I wish I could explain it better than this line from the synopsis, but I cannot: "A far-future mech western, Fighting Iron is a rip-roaring sci-fi adventure filled with six-shooters, plasma canons, rough and rowdy saloon brawls, showdowns, corrupt landowners, and 50-foot battle machines ready to crush everything in their path!"
Fighting Iron was narrated by J. Scott Bennett who does a really nice job. The book sounded great, with no issues or problems at all. Bennett's voice allowed this futuristic western play out just the way I think that Bible had intended it to.
This was an interesting book. Part science fiction and part western. Fighting Iron really had a lot going on. And it was coming from all fronts. The character development was really thought out allowing each important person to have their own backstory without taking away from the narrative too much.
The action was fast-paced and made sense, and there was a lot of it. Jake Bible knows how to write intricate stories like this that have lots of action without making it feel like there is too much action.
Western's aren't really my thing, but I still found myself really enjoying this. The way that Bible writes really draws you in and keeps you there.
If you enjoyed this review, please vote for it.

There came an elastic aftershock of creaks and groans and then, softly softly, a chinking shower of rubbled cement. Leaves calmed and trunks stood serene. Where, not a minute before, there had been a suburb, there was now only woodland standing amid ruins.
There is no warning. No chance to prepare. They arrive in the night: thundering up through the ground, transforming streets and towns into shadowy forest. Buildings are destroyed. Broken bodies, still wrapped in tattered bed linen, hang among the twitching leaves.
Adrien Thomas has never been much of a hero. But when he realises that no help is coming, he ventures out into this unrecognisable world. Michelle, his wife, is across the sea in Ireland and he has no way of knowing whether the trees have come for her too. Then Adrien meets green-fingered Hannah and her teenage son Seb.
Together, they set out to find Hannah's forester brother, to reunite Adrien with his wife - and to discover just how deep the forest goes. Their journey will take them to a place of terrible beauty and violence, to the dark heart of nature and the darkness inside themselves.

    Worth it!
I had been putting off getting this title. No reason, I just figured I'd not enjoy it and have to return it. I was so wrong
I loved this. The characters felt real, and had their good and bad qualities. The premise is completely new, for me at least, and I loved that. I really loved how the magical elements were introduced slowly, and they didn't take away from the journey these people were taking.
I can't put into words what I felt when listening to this. But I will listen to it again. I know I'll find even more to appreciate about it. Maybe even find the words to describe why I loved it so much!
Post apocalypse with a little bit of magic
What made the experience of listening to The Trees the most enjoyable?
This was a strange book, difficult to define. The writing is beautiful with vivid descriptions of nature. It's a look at not only Earth's nature, but human nature as well.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked them all.. every quirky, flawed one of them. I even started thinking "hey, maybe worms aren't that gross"
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite part of any book is when someone is faced with a difficult decision, and trying to understand what led them to that decision. There were quite a few in this book.
    Any additional comments?
This book reminds me of a Margaret Atwood novel. If you liked her MaddAddam series, you will probably like The Trees. If you don't like apocalyptic/fantasy/survivalist stories, then this one isn't for you.
    The Trees
A gripping, intense story with characters who grow into meaningful people The end is satisfying.
    Almost OK
Narration hard to follow with a very deep British voice. Story a little simplistic. Ending predictable.
High Expectations but I Gave Up!
Was it the writing, or the lugubrious, snail-paced narration? The premise was great - Trees take back the planet as a small band of survivors search for loved ones. The setup and mix of characters were full of promise. Yet the pedestrian dialogue and the droning narration finally got to me. Half-way through I simply couldn't take another plodding hour - even with the addition of a pet vixen cub to the shrinking band of characters.

If Star Trek could meet Colonel Brazee, this is what the universe might look like... Great reading, great fun...
Colonel Brazee brings a future Marine Corps to life. Exciting, vibrant, never boring. The United Federation Marine Corps Books Series, volumes 1-7, is outstanding storytelling. You will enjoy yourself, looking forward to each of the main character's deployments, ruing the day when each novel is finished. Don't hesitate to start with the first book, and settle in your mind, that this journey will be fun...
Do I recommend Colonel Brazee's offerings? You bet! Five out of Five Stars! Frankly, I can't wait for all of his novels. They're worth it!
Bravo Zulu, Colonel, and God Bless You and Yours, Sir!
An enjoyable SciFi series. Good stuff!
I've really enjoyed all of the books in this series, so far, and I'll be reading the remaining books, too. Ryck and his "posse" are an interesting diverse group of characters that even provide some humor at times. I gave this book 4 stars because I've noticed over the past 2-3 books, there have been many more misspellings and grammatical errors than in the early books. Suggest getting an editor, reviewer or even a mere Intern to proofread the material before releasing. Regardless, they're still good and I'll keep reading 'em!
    Another outstanding book
You feel like you have lived Ryck Lysanders life in this series. Many of us in the military can relate to humble beginnings and working our way through the ranks of the military. The brotherhood, war, mortality and the facing of our own retirement can all be lived and felt in this series. I will hate to see it come to an end.
    Colonel U.F. Marine Corps
I have already reviewed this book. I took great care in writing my review because the Book was so good. So Why Amazon, don't you have my review showing and where is it. The United Federation Marine Corps books 1 - 7
Jonathan P. Brazee has done a very good job creating this series. Books 1 thru 7 and excellent and in line with the best Sci-Fi Space Opera. Don't let the cover art scare you away, it may look a little silly but it's what's inside that counts. I highly recommend this series, pick it up you will enjoy!
