Publisher's Summary:
The popular Darkship series returns!
After winning the civil war in Eden, Athena returns to her calling, collecting powerpods with her husband Kit. Now weeks away from Earth, she goes into labor. To make matters worse, a strange ship attacks Athena and Kit's Cathouse and kidnaps Athena's husband. That ship is called Je Reviens. It's a name steeped in history - and not the good kind of history.
Hot on Kit's trail, Athena discovers that you shouldn't name a ship Je Reviens unless you intend it to return. The genetically modified Mules are back, and they have a plan to prevent themselves from being exiled ever again. And if the Mules win, the best thing humanity can hope for is slavery.
The worst is death.
While a bio-engineered plague wreaks havoc on the forces of liberty, Athena must risk herself, her husband, and her child for the survival of humanity.
The Mules may be about to find out what revenge truly is: one angry mother.

So much heart!
I loved the other Darkship books, but this one hit me in the feelz from the very first page.
Maybe because I understand that immediate confusion after the child to whom you just gave birth is placed in your arms, and maybe even a slight bit of panic (my first thought was "What do I do with him now, this little human I've created?")
Maybe it's because I understand the innate need to protect said child, and the burning, passionate, almost all-consuming desire to protect the ones you love at any cost.
Maybe it's because I get the almost disparate emotions a mother experiences walking that fine line between "this little human is a stranger whom I can't understand" and "this little human is my responsibility, my heart, and my soul."
What Sarah Hoyt is REALLY good at is emotionally connecting the reader to the characters, but at the same time not duct taping the reader to them and moving the story along at an exciting, interesting, readable pace. Whether it's childlike, damaged, but at the same time brilliant Fuse, or the heroic, vulnerable Kit, or the courageous, too-stubborn Athena, the reader moves with the characters, instead of being tied to them.
Long and short of it is I love this book! Great addition to my library!
Fast paced adventure with a healthy dose of motherhood.
Oh...wow.
This is the best one in the Darkship series yet.
First, this is a fast paced science fiction adventure story. Don't forget that as I write the rest of this.
At the end of the last book, Athena was pregnant. At the beginning of this one, she goes into labor while their ship is under attack by forces unknown. And when her husband Kit does not return from making repairs after the brief, inconclusive space battle she has to struggle out of her birthing bed, take care of her newborn infant and attempt to find out what happened to her husband.
The story is in many ways about what it means to be a parent, specifically a mother. Not just Athena, but others in the story are put into positions to act as parents to others. In addition to her own child Athena finds she not only has responsibility for her newborn daughter, but is put into the position of acting as a parent to a "relative" she never knew she had.
