    fun sequel
Alex Lamb continues his very exciting tale of Will Kuno-Monet, a Roboteer (paper) who stopped a war and met with Transcended species to talk them out of destroying humanity as they had other species. Thirty years later humanity is fighting over the new area the galaxy given by the Transcended and filled with ruins from a species that was destroyed. A small cabal is afraid of a civil that will destroy humanity and they have found a planet of Nemesis (paper from Gollancz) filled with artificially intelligent life. An attack by Nemesis robots to destroy an illegal human settlement is set up to be discovered, and Will sends an expedition to investigate, with the scientific half piloted by is adopted son, Mark. Plots within plots soon set Nemesis to attack all human settlements including Earth, and only Will and Mark working separately can same humanity. This, like the first tale, is an edge of the seat, impossible to put down, exciting read. Thereâs a third book coming and I canât wait. Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press
Having a hard time working my way through this. ...
Having a hard time working my way through this. This follow up lacks the "pop" of the original in the series. Having difficulty identifying with any of the newly introduced characters and wondering why the original cast was relegated to secondary status or removed from the storyline altogether.
    Great story & writing
Technology, bio, nano, electronics, aliens, tactical, war, transcendence, failure, dystopic future, page turner, flat characters, dimensional story, great read, thanks
Nemesis is one of the most imaginative and intriguing books I have ever read.
Nemesis is one of those books that is operating on many levels in its commentary on the human condition. It is a rare Sci-Fi book than can delve so deeply into humanity's greatest ambitions and horrific ugliness without being either dis or utopian. By refusing to pick a side Lamb does an extraordinary job of demonstrating how both are deeply entwined, and how those messy extremes play through lives of individuals. Through is grasp of both human character and exotic science Lamb manages to make the most extraordinary outcomes seem entirely believable.
The first part moves slowly deeply immersed in the inner workings of its characters and a complex web of political intrigue. As such it develops the characters much more richly than in the first book.

The planet Agate is, however, the human colony-world which lies perilously close to the K'Tai Imperium, and the K'Tai resolve to put the upstart humans back in their place.
The K'Tai Imperium invades Agate. On the ground, in the midst of the whirlwind conflict is the Carter family: Dave, a mid-level exec, is working in downtown Gemini City; his wife, Sue, a high school teacher, and their teenage twins, Jodee and Chris, are on a school trip to a Redlazore mine.
In space, the League Border Patrol face overwhelming odds as the K'Tai fleet advance.
The K'Tai soldiers of the infamous Black Legion descend on Agate, opposed by the meager, poorly armed militia and a sprinkling of regular marines. The planet and those upon it are engulfed in the flames of war.
The K'Tai, however, did not count on the Carters. For the Carters have a secret. A secret which will cost the K'Tai Imperium dearly.
The Carters are Agate's human population's only hope.

    Another briljant book from Neal
A return to form for Neal, doing the polity universe justice. Starting with the next book in the series immediately.
    Great book and great narration.
I wouldn't have expected the difference made by a narrator that goes goes the distance to give characters their own voice and keep it confidential consistent throughout a book to be as big as it was. Absolutely love it!
another great read marred by very low sound
very poor sound as many audible books of late (not the same for the audiobooks I have from the public library or other sellers). Had to turn the volume on max which made for some distorted narration.

    Epic space battles await
Here we have the first book in a new series. The author delivers epic space battles interesting characters plot twists and more. All of that combines to immerse the reader/listener into an epic tale. Alien invaders out of legend, immortal guardians who have warned of this day, Magic and technology guts and glory. Enjoy this well written well narrated story. Can't wait for the next one. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
    Great space story
    Audible book
Attempted assassinations, military assistance, battling with alien creatures and attempting to escape with their lives. There are some fast paced sections and some that are a little slow. I found the audible voice quality was poor initially - like the he was too close to the microphone but it got better farther in. Every now and then there was echoes but this was usually only a few seconds or a sentence. I like when they are talking over radio it actually sounds like a recording. Good overall story with enough detail to get you interested.
    Meh
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
The narration was pretty decent, the story line was nothing new to the genre... typical alien invasion/humanity fights back concept. The dialog was, at times, hokey. This book seemed rushed somehow. Like the author had all of these great ideas and tried to put them all into the story.
A good idea, in a rush to jam in far too much.
    -Story-
This book had a lot of good ideas, but for what I think is the first time on audible I actually wish this small book had been substantially longer. I don't particularly mean that in that I was especially attached to any of the cast and couldn't let go. Instead I mean that this book feels like it was the script for a bad action movie, or maybe even an anime, the way it moves from action scene to action scene while force-feeding you more and more exposition and new caveats.

    Publisher's Summary:
A crisis has arisen. On their first mission as a team, Pretorius and his Dead Enders kidnapped the real General Michkag and substituted a clone who had been raised and trained in the Democracy. But now they find that the clone likes being the most powerful man in the hundred-world Traanskei Coalititon - and having been raised on Earth, he knows how humans think and react.
This becomes a many-layered problem for Pretorius and what is left of his Dead Enders. As the only humans on a totally militarized alien world, they must first find where the best-guarded member of the enemy's military - Michkag - is hiding and how many aliens, or regiments, or divisions, are guarding him, and then they must find a way past all his lines of defense to kill or capture him.
    Members Reviews:
An imaginative, entertaining blend of space opera and military action, led by a team of mercenary misfits
Pretorius and what's left of his Dead Enders team are back in action, and their new mission basically could be described with one word: "Impossible." In the first book in this promising new series, Pretorius and the Dead Enders pulled off an incredible feat. They sneaked into the Traanskei Coalition, kidnapped its despotic leader, General Michkag, and left behind a Michkag clone who had been raised and trained in the Democracy. The goal was to create lasting peace between the Traanskei Coalition and the Democracy. But the Michkag clone has gotten drunk on power and turned into an even worse despot than the kidnapped original. Compounding that, he also understands the ways of human beings. So, in this fast-paced, entertaining tale that blends space opera and military action, the clone of Michkag has become a major threat to the Democracy. Pretorius and the Dead Enders -- a mixed but talented bag of mercenary fighters, lawbreakers, and space scalawags -- now must track down the clone, break into the most highly guarded castle in the known universe, and try to take him out, amid odds of a million to one (at best) that they will survive. In the prolific author's new book, Pretorius's leadership abilities get plenty of tests, and the deadly or stealthy skills of each Dead Ender are needed. Also, a new, self-confident team member, Apollo, must be convinced to fight by the Dead Enders' loose rules. And well-made plans and tactics must be changed on the fly once the Dead Enders enter a realm where humans are killed without question--and Pretorius and his team just happen to be the only humans within many light years. Amid all of these actions and challenges that must be survived, a reader can wish that the Michkag clone's evilness could have been given a bit more emphasis, too. But Mike Resnick's Dead Enders is emerging as an imaginative, entertaining series to check out now and keep watching for the next book.
My thanks to Pyr for sending an advanced reading copy for review.
    Four Stars
    good followup in this series.

Ex-Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr drew together an elite corps of friends and allies to take on covert missions that the Justice Department and the Corps could not officially touch. When the scientists doing a preliminary archaeological dig on a Class Two planet are taken hostage, Torin's team is sent to free them.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that the mercenaries holding them are a mix of Confederation and Primacy forces, and are looking for a weapon with power beyond anything previously known. Torin must contend with the politics of peace that have added members of the Primacy, former enemies, to her team. She will have to sift through shifting loyalties as she discovers that the line between us and them is anything but straight.
    Critic Reviews:

    Members Reviews:
    Another Torin Kerr Adventure
In this episode Warden Torin Kerr and her team have to rescue a bunch of scientists exploring a planet which might have evidence about the plastics that manipulated both the Confederation and the Primacy into an intergalactic war. Rumor has it, a weapon against the plastic has been found.
The scientists have been captured by mercenaries who want the weapon. They are two factions. The first is a war veteran broken by the war who will do anything to keep his ship flying and his people safe. The second faction has been hired by the mastermind to find the weapon. This faction is very willing to use violence and intimidation to force the scientists to find a weapon that may not even exist.
The Wardens aren't going on the rescue alone. They have been given "help" from the Primacy. The war is over but the two sides are just learning how to work together and neither side trusts the other. Luckily, a number of the being on the Primacy team are known to Torin because they all escaped from a prison together.
The viewpoint shifts from that of one of the scientists to Torin and her team so that we can see events from both sides. I liked that the scientist who is a Niln is trying to understand the invaders who are from the Younger Races. I liked her relationship with one of the young human mercenaries.
This was an exciting space opera. Torin and her newly integrated team need to rescue the hostages but keep getting sidetracked by the potential presence of the plastic. Torin would very much like revenge for all the millions of life the war caused. She is still haunted by her many dead.
Old threats, new relationships, and Wardens
Huff does a great job of fleshing out characters, strategy, humor, and examining issues left after a war affecting a galaxy-wide scale of humans and aliens. All in the midst of a hostage situation and illegal arms cropping up, and defining how the newly formed Wardens need to respond...a constant battle of reality vs Elder races dictates. Complex, intelligent, engaging characters...great read! Hardest part was keeping straight all the alien names/groups.
    Warden Kerr, Hostages, Mayhem
Warden Kerr confronts human and alien terrorists, deals with a hostage situation, confronts the psychological cost of war, runs into a host of old friends, and may find out more about the plastic menace. I love the plotting, the pace, the aliens, the jokes, the insights, and Torin's ability to get into and out of highly dangerous encounters.

    Entertaining.
When famed film maker Jake Bentneus pilots a custom submersible to the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Pacific, he finds that life does adapt and there is a hot hydrothermal vent at the bottom. Swimming in these thermals he discovers things that shouldn't exist. Pre-historic beasts. He sees Megladons but he also sees something that devours the Megladon in one bite. It's ginormous!! He names it Gigadon. In the Submersible Jake decides to get the heck out of there but the Gigadon follows him. Something happens to Jake and he barely survives. Now, a year after the accident, he offers a $1 billion reward to whomever kills Gigadon and brings his head to his hospital in Guam. Can they kill something that has adapted to live in the depths of the ocean?
I really enjoyed this! I went in with no expectations and ended up enjoying the ride. It's the type of book that reminds me of those movies on the sci-fi channel. You know the ones where you think they will be stupid, but you end up watching till the end and find that you enjoyed it. A guilty pleasure!!
Anyway, this was a fun and entertaining read. It's well written (if you suspend disbelief) and well researched. I love a good deep sea adventure, especially if there are prehistoric beasts in them and this one had them in bounds. There is a lot going on apart from the beasts. There is mystery, suspense and science. While the start of the book is slow enough, it plods along at a decent pace. I listened to it in two days!! The characters are varied and well developed. I pretty much liked them all. The descriptive writing was another plus. I could picture the dinosaurs perfectly!! It would make a good movie!!
In all, a good read and I must check out more from this author.
    S. W. Salzman sounded like he enjoyed reading this. He was enthusiastic and energetic and it made for a great listen. He had plenty of tones and voices and even did the female voices really well. I thoroughly enjoyed his performance!!
