Extraordinary achievement

This is a completely original, powerful muti-layered book â both simple and profound. It works on several levels. I might even go so far as to call it a masterpiece of tightly written absorbing prose. It is a woman's survival story in an Austrian valley where she seems to be the only person left alive. Her relationships to the animals around her (dog, cows, crows and a cat) are beautifully and movingly depicted. This is Marlene Haushofer's most famous (and probably best) work.

Viel mehr als nur eine Robinsonade

Eine Frau wacht eines Morgens in einer abgelegenen Jagdhütte auf und stellt fest, dass sie von der übrigen Welt durch eine unsichtbare Wand getrennt ist; außerhalb des Areals, das diese Wand begrenzt, gibt es offensichtlich kein Leben mehr. Außer der Frau, deren rückblickende Aufzeichnungen wir nun lesen, scheint es innerhalb dieser "Insel" niemanden mehr zu geben (die Größe des ihr zugewiesenen Areals kann sie aber nicht bestimmen, sondern muss sich außerhalb ihres Wirkungskreises auf Vermutungen verlassen); mit einem Jagdhund, einer Katze und einer zugelaufenen Kuh muss sie sich nun aufs Überleben einrichten.

Was zunächst wie eine moderne Robinsonade klingt und Sujets der Weltliteratur von der Arche Noah über Utopia und Robinson bis zur modernen Science Fiction aufgreift, lässt sich keineswegs ohne weiteres in eines der bekannten Genres einordnen, und gerade das macht seine Stärke aus.

Die Aufzeichnungen der namenlosen Frau (Namen haben im folgenden nur die Kuh, der Hund und zwei junge Katzen - "man (resp. woman) gave names to all the animals") berichten nämlich nicht nur von den kleinen Ereignissen in dieser "Neuen Welt", in der plötzlich alles aufs unmittelbare Überleben ausgerichtet sein muss, sie reflektieren auch ihr bisheriges Leben.

Highly entertaining, more like a show than audio book

I listened to Oath Of Moment today for the first time. Garro is a lone Space Marine on a very important mission at a most dire point later in the Horus Heresy. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone reading this review, so I won't say much more other than the action and drama in this story makes it one of the more fun Black Library stories I've heard. Space Marines, Imperial Guardsmen, Traitors and Cultists and legendary characters from the time of the Horus Heresy are involved. Even better, the music, sound effects and voice acting by Toby Longworth are extremely well done. It's difficult to talk about the story because it contains all kinds of interesting little revelations about the characters and intricacies of the Horus Heresy that should not be known ahead of time to maximize enjoyment. These Black Library Audio CD stories are much more than just normal audio books, they are more like audio shows like the radio dramas of old with acting, music and sound effects. The actor doesn't just read the story, he performs it and does many different voices and a dramatic reading of the lines. Recommended for all Warhammer fans and fans of SF action. It's a lot of fun.

A Worthy Addition to the Horus Heresy Storyline

I enjoy these WH40K audio dramas and this is one of the better ones. The production values have gotten better with each release and Toby Longworth does an excellent job of 'acting' the story.

In other parts of the Warhammer 40,000 universe these audio dramas are stand-alone stories but in the Horus Heresy series the Black Library is using them to continue the storyline. We traveled with Garro in "The Flight of the Eisenstein" and at the end of that novel he was cooling his heels waiting for someone to decide his fate. Now he's on a secret mission to help ensure the survival of the Imperium of Man.

I highly recommend these audio CDs to WH40K fans, especially the Horus Heresy CDs as they add a great deal to the Heresy and the WH40K background.

Epic Audio Drama

This was my first audio drama from the Horus Heresy series and I found that I was surprisingly delighted with it. The production itself was well done and nicely paced. The reader had a clear voice and the added sound effects really transported you to the battlefield. Story-wise, I thought this was a major improvement for the character of Nathanial Garro, far eclipsing his lackluster introduction in "Flight of the Eisenstein." The only real complaint I have is the length. These things should really be much longer for the price that they're asking!

I have no legion!

This lavishly acted story draws the listened in from the first moment.

I listen to a fair number of the Warhammer audiobooks and I really like this one, It has plenty of action but does a nice job fleshing out the reasons that drive one of the crucial characters in the Horus Heresy. There are a number of flashbacks that add to the story without being cumbersome. A good listen.

Life gets really complicated

Cory gets married and the happy day gets deep-sixed by the disappearance of his patron and the President of Earth, and the total shutdown of transportation and communication. He has to find a way, with his team, to keep the balance of power on his patron's world. And while he's at it investigate the claims of an origin race. Once again non-stop action, great storytelling.

Space diplomacy is more exciting than Earth diplomacy

Continues the adventures of Cory Wilson, Earth's somewhat neglected ambassador to gamra, the intergalactic wormhole-transport network. More fraught political, social and interpersonal drama ensues between rather spectacular explosions. While very much one piece of a series - none of the big background mysteries set up in the first volume are resolved in Raising Hell, and big new questions arise to boot - this is a fast-paced political thriller that's easy to devour despite the horribly complex web of factions and agendas. I will certainly continue reading the series.

Such a good read!

The more of Patty Jansen's work I read, the more I like her writing.

Raising Hell follows on from Ambassador: Seeing Red. It's the second book in the series, and it moved the story right along.

It was great to reunite with the characters I'd become so fond of, and see their relationships develop. I really enjoyed learning more about the complexities of 'gamra' and the multi-tiered 'associations' formed by the Coldi.

It takes quite a bit of skill to develop a human, but not yet human species and make it hang together. Cory, the main character was once again a great read. I've lived in the Pilbara in Western Australia, and Patty Jansen truly captured the excruciating discomfort of overheating.

This audio should be listed under the juvenile section, not science fiction. Although the premise is good, I dont think many adult sf listeners would enjoy it.

I love Syfy ! But it's got to be believable and this truly was from start to finish very easy book to keep up with I could read a little put it Down come back to it and I have no problem keeping up with the plot the characters were good so obviously there's going to be another book can't wait to hear about that! I wish I had more of the huge test which way this book is going but I guess I have to wait for the next Book. Thanks for a good read !!
