Brilliantly imagined and beautifully told, Aurora is the work of a writer at the height of his powers.

Best story and narration, I've heard in long while
I really loved this story about humans, our ambitions and frailties. Excellent and thought-provoking stuff :-)
    NO STARSHIP, NO CRY
This is a very involving story, and very intelligent writing. The narrator is excellent, and makes the book even more enjoyable.
Supposedly hard-science sf: hard for the accurate description of the constraints of space travel, but it also contains "soft-science" elements that add a lot of interest to the story. Perhaps it should be called speculative fiction in the sense of half science fiction and half philo-fiction. I had never read any of Kim Stanley Robinsons books before AURORA, and I think that it a good introduction to his work. I have now begun reading RED MARS and I am already coming across many of the same concepts that AURORA develops in more concentrated form. The range of knowledge mobilised in this novel is encyclopaedic, but I never found the story dull. I would distinguish the pace of the action, which was sometimes slow, from the pace of the invention (action, ideas, and style) which is always engrossing. So I found the novel enjoyable and thought-provoking, and never slow-moving.
The text is multi-layered: a hard science attempt to spell out concretely what voyage to a nearby solar system in a generational ship would be like; a more philosophical reflection on the mysteries of consciousness, the self, and free will; an exploration of the human propensity for living in ideas and making bad choices based on fantasy or ideology, a deployment of biological and ecological science beyond the mere fascination with technological prowess; a vision of human thinking and behavior as determined by errors and biases that cognitive science is only now beginning to understand.
The whole story is a science-inspired deconstruction of the fantasy of traveling to the stars, by taking that fantasy literally. Yet the story is metaphorical too: the starship is a prison, and our own ideas are a prison. The novel seeks to establish that what Robinson calls the technological sublime does not take us outside of our (mental and physical) prison, but just transports it elsewhere. The whole book is a plea for the use of science as enrichment of our present life rather than as escapism, into some beyond.
Robinson wants to enlarge our scientific vision: he tries to be encyclopedic, and to break with the hegemony of physics and technology in our thinking and imagination. So he includes not just hard physics, but also biology, sociology, systems thinking, philosophy of mind and of language, and cognitive science. Factoring in these considerations gives a very different approach to the generational starship than was customary in classical, physics-obsessed science fiction. This makes the book a stimulating and powerful read.
However, in AURORA politics suffers, as it is subordinated to Robinsons reflections on biology and cognitive science. This scientistic explanation of human behaviour generates what some people decry as the pessimism or the "conservatism" of the vision embodied in the book. I do not think that this vision is pessimistic or conservative.

    A battalion of convicts...
    Fifty secondhand armored vehicles...
A desperate scramble to hold the line...
The Vasilov Worlds are on the edge of human space. They have fought a war for 35 years against the insectoid Kadan that they have no intention of ending. It's too essential to a society where the only social movement is via battle promotion. Then it all changes when the Kadan nearly annihilate the front lines.
Vasilov Officer Colonel Cole Clarke has just returned home from service with the Sigg Military. Now that he has learned how the Sigg fight, he's bringing that knowledge to the Vasilov Military, plus an entire battalion of secondhand Sigg armor purchased on the scrap market. But instead of a fresh battalion of troops, he's assigned a penal battalion filled with convicts. The Vasilov Military doesn't accept change easily, even when they need it.
What would happen if an entirely new style of warfare came onto the battlefield? Could a strike force of secondhand armor trump the defensive doctrines they'd used for 35 years, or would they be doomed to failure and death on the icy planet Lishun Delta?
One squadron of armor. One colonel. A thousand of the worst convicts in the Vasilov Military. Will they be up to the task?

    Riveting
Casey Calouette is a new author for me. Thought I would give the first book in the series a try and see if I like it. The genre is military sci-fi. The book grabbed my attention right away and kept it all the way to the end.
The Vasilov worlds are on edge of human space and have been at war for 35 years against an insectoid race called Kadan. The protagonist is Vasilov officer Colonel Cole Clarke. He just returned home from service with the Sigg Military. He has learned how the Sigg fight and wants to introduce that knowledge to his own military. He has also brought back some second had armor from the Sigg military. The military does not want to change so assigned him to a penal battalion filled with convicts. They are stationed on the icy planet of Lishan Delta. On a hot day it is great to read a story about an icy world.
Calouette has created realistic battle scenes this seems to be his forte. The story is less about the technology and more about the people. The story is dialogue and action driven and light on description and back-story. I assume Calouette will develop the characters more as the series goes on. It is well written and entertaining. Jeffrey Kafer does a good job narrating the book.
    Death before dismount!
What made the experience of listening to Steel Breach the most enjoyable?
Its a story that I think many who have done time with, or have friends who have served in any mounted unit will find many great moments with. It brings back sparks and whispers of the cramped, dark box that is home, warmth and comfort, despite it being a small, smelly box. The performance of the reader was, quite well, and fit the theme.
What other book might you compare Steel Breach to and why?
It, reminds me a bit of the Freehold series, but, mostly due to the similarities that both display in therms of mounted operations.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Death before dismount.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes. And I did so.

Years have passed since the dead rose and wiped out most of the living. Many survivors have gathered in pockets around the world. Some are bent on trying to restore what once was, others have a mind to create something new and better from the ashes of civilization, and then there are those who thrive in the hellish chaos of lawlessness.
While the undead currently roam the world in herds that can often stretch for miles and number in the millions, the zombies are no longer the biggest threat to humanity's continued existence. That distinction has returned to mankind.
Those who are immune to the zombie infection are now either reviled or revered. Some have become human biological weapons while others are seen as the last hope for the continued existence of the human race. They are a symbol of hope to some...fear to others.

Almost back to Great and Glory Ends in Horrible Disaster
From almost great story to complete bomb
This story was bring back the series to its glory it was becoming a great book until and hour before the end.. The author absolutely bombed this book. Kevin's crew was the best story of the series. The Geeks and the Author completely destroyed the book and ruined the whole series for me.. First he destroyed the relationships and even when you accepted that. He brought you to a point where you were holding your breath for a great rescue but failed the readers.. And nuked not just the book but the series.. Sad thing I bought book 11 and have no desire at all to read it.. No longer a fan of the Author.. Flat out horrible.. And the Juan story with Mckenzie made no sense at all. Keeping a soon to be zombie dog next to your kids when it's about to die and turn and not binding it's mouth made no sense.. The Author ran out of things to write and instead of ending in great glory he bombed it.. Flat waste of 8 books for me. Time I can not get back. Erin a leader and bad villain.... Come on!!! That tops the cake of the nonsense.
    Game of Dead
Spoiler alert! Your favorite characters will eventually die. Another great story that leaves the reader pissed, sad, and eager. The writing makes you feel each loss and not want to attach yourself to a character just like the characters themselves feel about each other.
This series just continues to deliver
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Andrew McFerrin continues to be a fantastic narrator. I just love this series, and cannot rave enough about it! On to the next one!
    Sad
I am so sad that Kevin died I don't know if I want to read this series any more now that Kevin is gone and Steve's dead they were my favorite. Billy is stuck at the camp so his story is boring now. Tala story is kinda OK but I just miss the original leaders .
    love this series
disappointed that it will end soon. Saddened by the losses but it is the apocalypse. great story that has developed the characters so well

    Western Meets Ghost Story
This is the 1st in the series I've read... I was impressed and entertained... This short novel/long novella really is unique... I don't recall reading, or hearing of, a ghost story w/ a western type setting and characters... Think dark western meets The Shining and you'll almost have it... Gothic Western maybe??? Nevertheless, an original and imaginative plot w/ some very likably tragic figures...Difficult not to get invested in the Padre... The mood was intense yet ephemeral... You feel like you're catching something outta the corner of your mind, and then it's gone... Good ghost story amplified by the darkness of the storm weaving it's way through the tale... The narration was superior, suitable gravitas and sobriety... Definitely worth a credit even for a shorter work...
    gripping and worthwhile
a well told story although one wishes the characters had developed more worthwhile relationships. the reader is at his best when he slips into his native Texan accent and one wishes he had not tried to overcome it.

Firefly Meets Babylon 5/Galactica/Star Wars Hybrid
This was a pretty interesting series beginning. It reminded me heavily of the sic-fi series Firefly, and had elements of all the famous Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, and Star Wars series as well.
When all is said and done, I thought it was a good start to what will probably be a decent trilogy or series.
The story begins with a colony ship making an emergency jump into hyperspace while trying to escape the species that has essentially exterminated the human race (or so the human characters believe). The ship finds itself at a strange destination in space with most of their ships electronic systems inoperable. Theirs becomes another one of thousands of ships in an enormous space scrapyard, full of ships that suffered the same fate. The only refuge is a truly gigantic space station filled with dozens of diverse alien species. The society that has developed is controlled by money, cheating, fighting, and salvage.
The Babylon 5 reference, again, comes from the fact that most of the story occurs on an enormous space station filled with aliens. The Galactica aspect is seen with the crew fleeing their (supposed..) sworn enemies out to exterminate humanity. Another review compared this book also to Star Wars, and I think that has some merit too There were a lot of diverse lifeforms (including giant dog aliens, space dragons, and monster hornet things that live in space), kind of like Star Wars.
The author did a great job incorporating many of the elements of so many other series and storylines, but still keeping the story original.
The book is full of action, fighting, shady deals, and tons of twists and interesting developments. It was by no means predictable, and I never found myself board while listening.
The narrator wasnt bad, but he seemed to be trying to put a little too much enthusiasm into his voices for some of the characters, and there were times I had a hard time distinguishing which character was speaking. I gave the narration 4 stars, but to be honest he rated more of a 3 or 3.5.
This was an interesting and entertaining book and well worth the credit I spent. I will definitely buy the next in the series when it is released.
    Couldn't finish it
The book borrowed way too many cliches and characters from other stories, movies and TV shows. The cast and crew were cartoonish.

    Enthralling
Very enthralling storyline. A whole universe to explore. Well developed characters, political intrigue, with only a touch of romance. It wouldn't be for the hardcore romance type as it took three books before they get together, but if you want a good story this is for you.
wonderful conclusion to an epic series
I love the pelted universe. I also love how all of this ended. I loved the narrator in the end (we part as friends ) he's good at pelted voices I think.

    Overall a good zombie book.
The narrator was pleasant to listen to and did a very good job of bringing you into the story. the story flowed nicely. there is a lot of action. I would have liked to have known more background on the characters. overall a very good listen.
Gripping and Terrifying; Would Make a Great Movie
When a friend told me her boyfriend had written a novel, I checked it out on a whim. I expected something amateurish, but was pleasantly surprised to find a harrowing, gripping tale of horror both visceral and existential. I was very impressed with the author's extensive knowledge of military hardware, procedure, and tactics, and also with the consideration paid to how a zombie apocalypse might actually play out on the world stage.
I was initially uncertain about one major change to the "zombie rules" (namely, that *everyone* who dies, of any cause, will reanimate), but I found this wasn't a hurdle to my enjoyment. The battle scenes remained harrowing, the pathos was real, and the pacing was excellent; I suspect that the author has some experience with writing screenplays. This book would make a great movie.
Starts promising but then shuffles along
What disappointed you about Convoy 19?
The book starts promising and interesting, but then, the inconsistencies start piling up, and I found myself shuffling along, waiting for the book to end. The zombies are inconsistent: sometimes they shuffle and move slowly, sometimes they run and are whirling dirvishes of doom. Sometimes, automatic weapons fire dispatches them easily, and other times, the classic precise head shots are required.
What could Mark Rivett have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Mr. Rivett really needs to do more research into the details that he wants to use in his books. For example, "soldier" is not a universal term for anyone in military uniform. A sergeant in charge is not a "commanding officer." Why would the Chinese Navy want to invade Hawaii in order to establish an island safe zone? Why not any of the number of islands much closer to China (Taiwan, Okinawa, any of the Philippine Islands, etc.? How is the fleet going to get to the Gulf of Mexico since the carrier won't fit through the Panama Canal, and no one would be around to operate the locks anyway?
Have you listened to any of Stephen R. Thornes other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Mr.

    From the Alien View
I prefer books that come from a different angle and that is what treed me to this novella. As mentioned by another reviewer, there are no humans in this. I give an A for Concept. After the beginning of this story it dragged. Maybe it was, too much, too fast? I would have liked to have spent more time with the main character and with this world. A longer version, in which we start with the mother, the birthing, the growing up and than the separation, could have been more interesting. The world created could also use more exploration. To capture the male audience, some violence, evil and or sex would help.
    Must hear.
Absolutely stunning, both the story and the reading. So easy to get pulled into her world. Great to hear sci fi with no humans, but it wouldn't be Jen Wells without a cephalopod!
    Wonderful, unique perspective!
This author gives a unique perspective about symbiotic verses parasitic relationships. She weaves an interesting, intelligent, and believable story which explores the realm of interstellar travel and the interaction between species. I look forward to reading more from this author.
    A gem of a story!
Wow, this story was such a nice surprise... I wasn't sure what I was gonna get when I downloaded it... all I knew was that it was something I hadn't yet read, from one of my favorite authors... I also knew that it was a first contact story from an alien's perspective. What a perfect, little gem of a gift from Jennifer Foehner Wells! This beautiful story (placed in the Fluency universe) is the prequel to Jen's next book, Druid, which is available now in eBook and an audible version should be out later this year...
If you've not already caught the Flu(ency) from Jennifer Foehner Wells, you owe it to yourself to become infected! Don't wait. Get Fluency today, and then read EVERYTHING she has written (short stories, too, like this one, The Grove). You won't go wrong by reading Jen's tales, I swear, you seriously need these books!!!
I just listened to the audible version of this story. It was such a pleasure to hear it in Jennifer's own voice...
    Great premise
The author does a great job reading this short story. The premise of the story is so new and fresh. This is well worth the read.

    Publisher's Summary:
For fans of Robin Cook and Michael Crichton comes a medical thriller that melds cutting-edge science with ripped-from-the-headlines terror. What happens when a new immortality drug leads to an explosive outbreak of a deadly virus that, if not contained, could wipe out humanity once and for all?
World-renowned virologist Dr. Cricket Rensselaer-Wright abruptly abandoned her research in Africa after watching her colleague die tragically from the Ebola virus. When she returns to the States to reunite with her teenage daughter Emmy, her plans are sidetracked. No sooner does she set foot on the campus of Acadia Springs - the research institute where she grew up and Emmy now lives - than her onetime mentor Charles Gifford announces his discovery of the Methuselah Vector, a gene therapy agent that can confer immortality on a patient after a single injection.
Gifford's air of triumph is marred when a young woman on campus dies suddenly from a horrific viral infection, eerily similar to the Ebola that drove Cricket out of Africa. Despite Cricket's pleas to slow down the rollout of the Vector and run more tests, Gifford refuses. And when the unthinkable happens - when Emmy falls ill with the same mysterious disease - Cricket is forced to take matters into her own hands. But is it already too late?
Gifford will stop at nothing to release the Vector into the world. Mobs are clamoring for it. Cricket has only a few hours to find a cure for Emmy, and to convince the public that Gifford's quest for eternal life may cost the very lives he hopes to save.

    Well done
Good story with believable characters. A great listen. I would highly recommend this as a listen to all who enjoy great medical/disease/pandemic fiction.
    Strong research, weak plot
The premise was interesting but it became so implausible that I was left very disappointed.
Maybe the author got a bulk discount on clichés
This book was so bad, it's hard to pick where to start. The author seems to be a graduate of bad Hollywood writing 101, and the narrator doesn't do the hyperbolic story any favors by mispronouncing almost every instrument name she comes across. Not that we scientists actually spend time using full names and defining acronyms and explaining to distinguished virologists what an agarose gel is, not in this age where high school kids run DNA electrophoresis as sophomores. The whole book was just ridiculous.
    far too predictable.
Had no twists/turns to keep it interesting. No "Ah Ha" moments. could have been much better.
    Sci-fi but predictable.
"The Immortalist" approaches our greatest fears. our mortality and the fragility of life. While it appears that science defeats one, it threatens to expose the other.
The author is highly technical at times, though to this reader, not boringly going through analysis. In some places, the reader is led to the most obvious like a child.
The plot is well developed, but the focus on Cricket's obsession with her father and her own shortcomings are sometimes a distraction. Throw in failed marriage and dealing with a teenaged daughter and, to me, the energy is sucked out. Attempting to address all these at once makes it hard to keep up. An impossible problem does keep one coming back to see what is next.

    Publisher's Summary:
The universal order is unraveling. The enslaved cry out for freedom. The apocalypse is now. Devis Cameron, hero of the Xenophobe War and the Empire's reluctant champion, has been posted to the 4th Terran Rangers - a gaijin Warstrider unit on New America - to eliminate a newly discovered underground colony of Xenos and to deal harshly with civil unrest spawned by Imperial repression. The situation is rapidly degenerating into total anarchy. And the nuclear option may be the only alternative.
But Dev is uncomfortable with the role that has been assigned to him. And now he must choose between betraying his masters or his principles - to crush a righteous revolution or to help forge an alliance between the Empire's enemies and an inscrutable race of alien monsters.

    The books deserved better
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I'll be blunt: the performance was horrible. I'm not familiar with the narrator's other work but I suspect the problem here is the direction anyway. Bill Paxton's character in aliens is famous for his panicked scream "Game over, man! Game over!" It was effective because it stood out in stark contrast to the other soldiers who (mostly) remained calm under pressure. In this performance, *every* character sounds that panicked, *every* time. There are plenty of ways to portray excitement in a dangerous situation other than terror. I only hope that the remaining books in the series are yet to be performed and that the director and narrator give the material the treatment it deserves.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I'm cheating here because I have the series in paperback and know the arc of the story. Ask someone for whom the material is fresh and maybe they will name a character other than Dev Cameron. Among the other things I like about Dev is that his rise to prominence is believably reluctant. He's not the resentful rogue-cop, bad boy kind of hero who breaks all the rules and gets away with it because he's so effective. Dev gets thrown into undesirable situations and reconciles by making the best of them, learning and growing from the experience.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yeah, sure. The pacing was fine. At least I think so. If it was off, I was too busy cringing every time something happened and all the trained, professional, hardened, badass soldiers started shrieking.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
This is one of my favorite book series and the author ties together elements of military sci-fi, cyberpunk, space opera, exobiology, emergent phenomena, galactic origins, AI, nanotechnology, philosophy, and more. I was so anxious to experience it in audio that I was getting close to recording it myself. When I found it on Audible I freaked and snapped it up. I would have bought the entire series if it had been available. Now I'm waiting to see how the next one sounds and actually considering abandoning the series.
"What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?"
    Exactly. How did you know?
    Any additional comments?
To be clear, I remain loyal to the series and will probably listen to the entire set, even if cringing all the way through.
