Thoroughly satisfied!

I loved this book. The author did an excellent job with the descriptions in this story. I am a very visual and imaginative person, so with the author's descriptive prowess I felt as if I was watching a movie. I can't wait for volume two. My only negative is the way volume one ended. it just dropped off. The attempt at making it a cliffhanger wasn't welldone. Other than that, this was a great listen.

The narrator did a good job of bringing the individual characters to life. Coupled with the authors descriptiveness, the narrator allowed me to see and hear each character and their individual qualities and traits. I would imagine the narrator has played the 'Call of Duty modern warfare series' as his voices put me in the mindset of 'Soap' McTavish and his lot.

I have seen some glowing reviews of this on Goodreads and thought it sounded amazing so eagerly plugged in my headphones to listen. Maybe I should of read it because I think I would of enjoyed it more. The narrator was only OK. It sounded like, to me anyway, he was very stilted and up tight. I felt like all he did was read the lines given to him, he didn't preform nor give any life to the book. He seemed to stop for a second after every sentence which is why it felt so stilted and it came across as a monotone and unremarkable story.

As I said, I might of enjoyed this more if I had read it, but since I listened to it here are my thoughts on the story itself.

An elite team of soldiers are on a covert mission in the Middle East, their objective is to assassinate the head of a known terrorist group. Their mission goes successfully but on their way to their extraction point, they come across a village that has been destroyed, bodies of men, women and children are strewn everywhere. Straight off they see that something isn't right because there seems to be survivours among the dead, but these people seem different. The way they hold themselves and walk are off. As they get closer they start to see impossible things, people with devastating injuries are walking about aimlessly, that is until they see the soldiers. Suddenly they surge towards them and despite the soldiers firing, they keep coming. The soldiers soon learn that only head shots will stop them. They finally destroy the remaining people and head home. They soon learn that what they fought were the walking dead, and the disease is spreading through out the world. Their life is about to become much more difficult and the job a lot harder! Can they all survive?

Sounds great right? Well in one sense it totally was. The story itself was fairly fast paced and intense and I became invested in finding out what happens the team, but in another sense, I felt it was lacking.

Would you listen to Just a Couple of Days again? Why?

I would absolutely listen again since the plot of this book is not the only point...the story is very interesting and captivating, but it does such a great job of making the reader think that multiple listens would provide totally unique experiences.

Very unusual sci-fi-esque meandering dramedy

What made the experience of listening to Just a Couple of Days the most enjoyable?

The narrator really made the book for me. He did a great job, especially considering the multiple paths that the story went in.

What about Bernard Setaro Clarks performance did you like?

He really gave the characters depth, great narration.

I don't know what that was but I think it was a mixing bowl of slag! Maybe a mixture of other books he thought of writing, left over pages and fragments of story wannabes? Not sure but I found myself hating it. It didn't seem to have a purpose for existing as a story.

I listened to the preview and read the reviews. I was pleased with the way the author used language. However, the story meanders all over the place and it is more like a comic book story in prose without the superheroes. I stopped listening about half way through.

MANNERS ARE FREE, BUT

HAVING NO MANNERS COMES WITH A COST

This is not going to be a classic. It is a little different. No zombies, but seemingly normal people who kill and than commit suicide. It is hard to tell who the bad guys are until they try and kill you. This makes for a more horrifying situation than zombies who are obviously zombies. The conspiracy behind how these people became monsters is a little unique. I have only read one other book with a similar type of scenario, unless you count the one with the Nazi's.

GOLF USUALLY BORED ME TO TEARS, I LIKE MY ACTION FAST AND SWIFT

The main characters are okay. The plot has some holes you can fly a plane through, but I could not stop listening and I am at lost to as to why. Best I can figure is that it did stay entertaining and I wanted to know who and what was behind the whole thing.

WHEN I START SOMETHING I LIKE TO FINISH IT AS QHICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY AS POSSIBLE.

If the next book goes on sale, I will buy it, but I don't think I am going to spend a whole credit.

Great story, different in a good way.

I really liked this story. It was very original when dealing with other books in a zombie, or post apocalypse category. Two brothers on vacation scrape by to try and save humanity.

A solid post-apocalyptic tale, with a few holes

Where does First Activation rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

The story has some shortcomings but Jack and Harry are solid characters that you want to root for. I immediately picked up and started the Second Activation once I finished up the First Activation. It's not my favorite post-apocalyptic novel but it's an interesting story.

What other book might you compare First Activation to and why?

The First Activation stops pretty suddenly the Second Activation picks up at the exact moment the first book ends.

What about James Langtons performance did you like?

James' girl voice is a bit strange, the male characters are solid.

Don't get attached to anyone Jack and Harry meet.

Will you survive the first activation?

They just landed after a cross-ocean flight from the UK to NY. The pilot cannot reach the ground and has to perform an emergency landing. What they find when they land is just the beginning. Follow two brothers as they discover what has happened to people while they were in the air and try to figure out what exactly is going on.

The narration for this was really enjoyable. I honestly didnt realize going into this that the book was from the point of view of two British brothers so the fact that the narration was done in a British accent was a total shock to me. But, Im glad it was. It added a lot to certain scenes where a word or phrase was said and either they didnt understand it, or the people around them were unsure what they meant.

A better SHTF novel.

Not sounding as dogmatically preachy as most end of the world novels The Defiant, Grid Down, is a pleasant surprise. The story , following the average "post EMP" plot keeps your attention none the less.

The narration was pleasant and I look forward to hearing more.

The wrong narrator

What would have made The Defiant: Grid Down better?

The narrator's voice is deep and likeable, and would probably excel at commercial voiceovers. However, I don't think his style suits audiobooks for the following reasons: he uses the same voice for all characters (confusing), he misreads/mispronounces things repeatedly (instead of saying "Nicholas' bag" he will say "Nicholas bag").

Perhaps I should blame the editor/producer, too, because it seems like a professional one would have ordered multiple takes when an error occurred.

Would you recommend The Defiant: Grid Down to your friends? Why or why not?

I will not recommend this audio version, but I would recommend the paper book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Joseph Morton?

Duke Fontaine, without a doubt!

I have a new favorite author!

I have now officially listened to all of Mr. Vance's books on tape available on audible. I am eagerly awaiting his next one. The man really knows how to write a great book! You won't be disappointed

What disappointed you about The Defiant: Grid Down?

The fact that you have to buy 2 more books to finish the story. I have been an Audible member for a number of years now and recently I have been noticing a significant trend towards shorter and shorter "books" that force you to eat up credits to get the whole story. Two recent examples are "The Defiant:Grid Down" and "Vagos, Mongols, and Outlaws". The first ebook mentioned is the worst offender, if you want to hear the whole story you have to purchase 3 books, burning up 20% of my annual allotment. At least the second book tells a whole story. There have been others over the last year that have struck me as a poor value given the length of the read.

As much as I enjoyed The Defiant, there is not way I am going to reward the author's and Audible's (Amazon) greed by shelling out two more credits for what should have been one.

If this trend continues I will look for an alternate source of audiobooks.

A brilliant end to the trilogy

In my review of the second book of this series, I complained that something was missing. I guess the authors were saving it all up for this book. I just erased my next sentence because I don't want to spoil anything for you. I want you to have a chance to experience this story spoiler-free.

The story is great. It is similar in many ways to "The Martian." (another great listen) But there are several wow moments. In fact, maybe I should say wowee-dowee moments. I am sitting here feeling a little sad because the story of these people has come to an end. It was a great end, but I'm so sorry that I won't be able to spend tomorrow with them.

Read this series. Start with the first book and work your way through in order. You'll thank me.

good, if technical

a lot of dry technical explanations. narrator has improved significantly since the first book in the series. bad accents and mispronunciations are still quite common. however, it's pretty well written.

It gets a bit tedious

It's a little formulaic. So enjoyable, but it seems it's the same sort of plot. Daring space crew reaches out to do something seemingly impossible. They get into deep trouble and improvise a way to work through the trouble and improvise to come out shining in the end. Enjoyable, but kind of like fast food science fiction.

The Android app fails to download the book at all. Apparently the "mp332 codec doesn't support full file assembly." What a pity.

Be PC not Zombies Necronite

What made the experience of listening to Dying by the Hour the most enjoyable?

More intense background into characters and much more action. This is a totally new way of looking at the genre.

What about Hollie Jacksons performance did you like?

Holly Jackson is perfect, one of my favorite narrators. She's great with voices and emotions. When I see she's narrating a book I always check it out.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Ally was being choked, while so many people are dying around her Jesse chooses to try to save her.

I know the next book is out in print, I hope audible releases it soon also.

Excellent follow up to an original series!

Switching from past tense to present tense, Shrum has created a sequel that keeps you on the edge of your seat late into the night. Told from dueling POV's (Jesse and Ally) at first made me a little disappointed. I fell in love with Jesse in Dying for a Living (first book in the Jesse Sullivan series). But I wasn't totally sold on Ally. She was a good, developed side character, but I didn't quite connect with her. Seeing the imaginative world Shrum has created though Ally's eyes changed my tune immediately. And while part of what I find so lovable about Jesse is her unapologetic views on life and her snarky attitude. As where Ally is softer, sweeter, and more of a people person. But getting her POV, you find out Ally is a bada$$ in her own right. Her loyalty and devotion to Jesse and vice versa gives you definitely #friendshipgoals, then of course there is the story itself. And Shrum does not disappoint. There is action--a whole lotta action--romance, heartache, an evil villain hell-bent on going to great lengths to achieve his diabolical plan, and Cindy. And more some reason, maybe the exploding toilet thing in book one, but I just love me some Cindy :)

two tales

struggled to listen to whole story. it went back and forth back and forth with no one knowing what the hell was happening while the story line is already laid out. first book was not bad but this book isn't even worth it for free let alone wasting a credit.

Not as good as the first

What did you like best about Dying by the Hour? What did you like least?

I like the characters. I like the 'death recovery' aspect. I didn't care for the 'long game' aspect. Jesse against her dad feels like it could go on and on for multiple books and I don't think that can sustain my interest.

Very enjoyable book - especially for military

I enjoyed the book. I especially found it interesting having served in the Marine Corps for 24 years. The author does an outstanding job applying actual military culture to science fiction. Very detailed discussion of weapons.

I was able to relate to much of the story line as I have observed outstanding Marines make this somewhat difficult transition to Lieutenant.

What does Daniel F. Purcell bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I spend several hours per day commuting to work. I have listenened to many books in the car. Mr. Purcell does an outstanding job of bringing the story to life while holding the interest and attention of the listener.

It held my attention from start to finish! Looking forward to #4.

Well done - I am certainly interested in future books for this series.

Its a great book, but Mr. Drummond made every female, including Sula sound like some whiney high schooler. These were warrior women of the future, not some Valley Girl mall shoppers. Aside from that, great book, great reading. Thanks

Solid, well-plotted military space opera.

Solid, well-plotted military space opera with moments of vividly imagined scenes that raise it above the crowd. As military sci-fi, it excels in convincingly imagined space combat, built on plausible physics, as well as some visceral, cinematic scenes of ground combat. The main protagonists are strongly characterised but the book would be strengthened by a more fully drawn supporting cast, especially the non-human characters.

Dude reads FAST!

I checked my iPhone's Audible App several times to make SURE the speed was set to "X1". I even paused the book and opened another book to make sure something else wasn't wrong with the speed setting (Nope, other books played fine). Mr. Rheinstrom just read through this book like he was narrating an Auction or something. EverythingIsReadSoFastYouHaveNoIdeaWhat'sHappening!!!

Several sentences are read multiple times, back to back... I am left with a feeling that this book was pushed through at an INCREDIBLE pace for some reason.

Mr. Rheinstrom obviously has a LOT of talent, I've listened to another book he's read, but he fires through this book like it's stuck on Fast Forward. Editing didn't catch a LOT of parts... in at least one place it was like he realized he'd fumbled the sentence and kinda ended up TRYING to make it sound funny, and then the sentence is immediately repeated a totally different way, with the "First time through" not removed... kinda like 'Bloopers Parts' got left in..

At first I thought the plot and story wasn't making sense because it was read so incredibly fast, but then I realized the time line was jumpy, and the story line and planning just wasn't thought out... it's hard to explain... nothing seems to make sense, plans aren't thought out, a year elapses between one sentence and the next... just, strange.

It a good book but ....

The narrator is bad it's hard to get use to his voice and female voice sound like a man in drag

Audio Performance is better than the first book even though someone doesn't know how to edit the audio. Sentences are repeated at chapter change.

lots of repeated lines and random gaps in the audio. seems like they didn't listen to it before launch.
