Not much info
I expected to actual learn "How To Build a Chicken Coop" using this guide. Other than a little rambling about chicken coops which is mostly obvious common sense stuff the authors primary instruction is "Buy a coop plan."
Waste of money
Extremely basic information. Anything in it can be brought up in an internet search in 5 seconds and you'd definitely get more detailed and better information. If it was .99 it'd be worth the money but most definitely not for 9.99.....
FAST SHIPPING
GREAT PRODUCT AND BEST SELLER WOULD BUY FROM THIS SELLER EVERY TIME I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO EVER ONE FROM THIS SELLER
Very detailed and easy to follow... BUT...
The expense involved in following these plans is pretty high. After compiling and calculating all of the parts, hardware and wood supplies required, the cost ended up being much more than a precut, prefab coop from somewhere like Tractor Supply. The first three items listed in the materials (strong ties) came to some $67. The entire list of supplies came to around $450.00 based on current prices on Homedepot.com. I found a very nice 3-4 chicken coop on sale at Tractor supply for $179 and by adding a 10x10 dog kennel ($279 from Tractor Supply), I added a nice run with plenty security from the elements and predators and room for expansion. Of course, the quality of this coop would probably be much better with sturdier protection against predators than a prefab alone, but if you put the prefab under a covered 10x10 dog kennel like we did, it probably won't suffer much weathering and the covered kennel definitely keeps the chickens safe from predators.
This is not a complaint against the actual information in the book. It is quite easy to follow and is laid out step-by-step with detailed information on measurements and cuts made to the wood, which hardware is used to bolt and or screw the parts together and exactly what parts to buy. I am not a very handy person... but even I could follow these directions with ease.
Overall, this was the best publication I found on the internet for building your own coop. And I looked at a lot of them. If I had the time and will, this is the coop I would build. It has very nice nesting boxes and roosting bars, plenty of access doors, options for ventilation and even handy removable Plexiglas windows to close off the ventilation on very cold nights. Unfortunately, for me, the cost in money and time is just too high to justify building it over the easier option of buying a prefab and kennel. If you want to build your own high-quality, extremely functional, sturdy and attractive coop, this is the book for you. You will find no better set of instructions anywhere on the internet.
My chicken coop will be awesome
I found this guide very useful and informative. The materials lists and construction assemply sections were clearly detailed and easy to follow. I learned several new things about choosing and housing chickens, and the tips included here were surprising and very helpful. The author covers everything from how and where to place your chicken coop to links and resources to find blueprints to build from.
