Abandoned (Jennie McGrady, 12) by Patricia Rushford

One of Rushford's best books yet! A wonderful tale of an adopted child's search for her mother. Also very gently looks at both sides of the abortion issue along the way, and puts it back into proper perspective without condemning either side. Although written for youth, I recommend it for all women! Like all the other Jenny McGrady series books, this one will keep you guessing to the very exciting end.

wonderful

I found some of the Jennie McGrady mysteries while in a christian bookstore one day. I bought the first book in the series, and thought that I'd have something to keep me occupied. I couldn't put it down! Patricia kept me on the edge of my seat the entire book, and hasn't let me down yet!

She has done it again!

Patricia had yet again used her wonderful mind to create a wonderful Jennie McGrady mystery! In this book Jennie must find out why some one is on a killing rampage and why their next target is one of the local media! What can she do with only a little amount of time?

i heard this book is pretty good....

i personally haven't read this book yet, but i'm expecting it to be pretty good, as all the other jenny mcgrady books are... but my friend just bought it and she said it was really good and that she couldn't put the book down... we'll just have to see now, won't we?

Loved it!

First of all, the story was great. It kept me up late at night not wanting to stop listening. Disappointed by the ending a bit, but that's why it is a series I suppose. The narration was really good for females other than the whisper she does at times - makes it hard to hear. The male voices are not good. Very low like a whisper and gruff. They sound unreal and all the males sounded exactly the same. I would not let this deter you from purchasing this book though. The content is good enough to stand alone.

A Worthwhile Read

I pondered over this book but can report I made the right choice.

It's an interesting take on a paranormal cosy mystery and it works. Okay there a bits where one has to suspend belief, but isn't it hat what this genre is about.

The characters are likeable, even the weird neighbour Ian. Our protagonist, Libby is the divorced single mum. Ya da ya da ya da, but you'll root for her.

Connelly and his Cassie Black does not disappoint

Having gone through all Harry Bosch stories in no-time, I realised I had to get my hands on more by Michael Connelly. The book is impossible to put down, and kept me going and going. A book I highly recommend.

Not good...

Worst Connelly I've listened to. Liked all the others, prefer the legals to the Bosch series but they're ok.

This was clumsy, repetitive and padded.

Not a single endearing character, weak story.

The over written narrative of people unlocking doors or doing any simple task was more and more annoying as the book went on.

If everyone in every scene had just 'entered' a room it would have been 5 chapters shorter.

Another great Book shame about the sound

After about 4 hours in the audio starts cutting out, so frustrating. Great book good narrator but the sound cutting out is so annoying. Still a great book they just need to fix the sound.

What You Think is Apparent is Only Skin Deep.

This novel is the reason I read mysteries, especially Nordic ones. It has everything I love in a good whodunit - twists and turns, good characterization, no red herrings, and an ending that knocked my socks off.

It is the first novel I've read by Anne Holt but it is not the last. She may be the best Scandinavian mystery writer I've read, and I've read a lot. I also am impressed with the quality of Anne Bruce's seamless translation. The book had me in its grips throughout and I had a hard time getting to sleep because I didn't want to put it down.

The story both simple and complex. The director of a foster home in Oslo, Norway is found with a knife in her heart. Hanne Wilhelmsen, Chief Inspector, and her team are directed to solve the crime. Hanne is new at her job and is settling in but finding it difficult to delegate to others. The main suspects are the usual - the husband who stands to inherit everything, the lover who has been stealing from the dead woman, the employees of the foster home, and even the children who reside there. One child in particular, a twelve year old boy who has run away, is on the police radar.

The police very carefully interview all the possible suspects and the motives become more and more difficult to sort out? There are several people who could have benefited from the death but who had the opportunity to commit the crime? Is the solution an easy one or do the investigators need to dig deeper?

I found the novel easy to follow despite the number of characters in it. I especially enjoyed how the story of Olav Hakonsen, a twelve year-old boy in the foster home, along with his mother's first person narrative, are interspersed in the mystery. This is a fine example of how a great mystery should be constructed. Kudos to Ms. Holt!

Let me explain the Three-Star rating. Holt writes very well and is a good story-teller, hence 3 stars. I didn't finish the book because of its unrelenting"darkness." Now I realize that "dark" and Scandinavian writers are almost synonymous, but in this case it was simply off-putting. I'm a Norwegian by descent and I appreciate "dark," but in this case there seemed to be no hope of a dawn. Anne, I love you,but not this effort.

This is the fourth book in the Hanne Wilhelmsen series translated from Norwegian to English. It describes Hanne's encounter with a young boy, most likely a psychopath or sociopath, who is sent to a special home for troubled children.

Fast start with a hit and run in the parking lot

These books were written as funny, fast-paced, fun reads with some romance tossed in for good measure and this one does not disappoint. The writer keeps getting better with each book. This was my favorite book so far in the Faith Hunter Scrap This Mystery Series.

Dont expect the Grandmas back on scene but the rest of the cast in present. Steve, the current boyfriend and prosecutor, Detective Ted Roget & his PI brother, Bob, are present and accounted for. New to the scene is Bobs boyfriend, Garrison, and a VERY arrogant cop (well portrayed I wanted to slap him up the side of the head).

Wish the author would have played up the identity thief a little more.

After reading this book, I really want to attend a weekend crop at a hotel and I am looking forward to the next book.

Additional ideas for the author: men do scrapbooking to show off their businesses and there are historians in fraternal organizations as well as the widower who wants to scrap his son's wedding (love triangle for the Grandmas).

Brilliant introduction to Malcolm Fox

I've been a fan of Rebus for years and was sceptical of a Rankin Edinburgh book with a different central character, but I was pleasantly surprised.

If anything I enjoyed The Complaints more than the later Rebus books. Learning more of Fox's character and situation as the book progressed was intriguing. I look forward to my next Malcolm Fox instalment.

Fox meets Rebus

I've always loved the Rebus books so thought I'd try one without him. On certain levels they have similar characters - flawed, rule breakers an awkward sibling. I think they became to respect each other after "Saints of the Shadow Bible": but different enough to be their own men. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any fan of Ian Rankin. The reading by The magnificent James MacPherson is once again superlative.

Excellent book. Malcolm Fox is a great protagonist. Really absorbing story. Can't wait to listen to the next Fox story.

What a writer Rankin is. I loved Rebus and was unsure if Rankin would be able to enthralled me without the grumpy DI. Well he did and how! Welcome Inspector Malcolm Fox - I look forward to getting to know you.
