Susan McBride has written a very enjoyable book, the characters are very well developed. If you're a cozy mystery fan, you won't want to miss this one.

An author who knows the ends outs of Richmond, .Va and is an excellent story teller

I have liked all of the Willie Black tales

I have liked all of the Willie Black tales, not only because of their Richmond settings but because Willie is funny and flawed and has a gift for doing some really stupid stuff in a charming and journalistically earnest way. I think this may be my favorite Willie Black book yet. There are dark moments, but there is a sweetness to Willie's relationship to his daughter, his mom, and their extended family. It's a quick read, but fun, especially if you've ever lived in or visited Richmond, Virginia.

The Best So Far

I've read all of the Willie Black mysteries and this is the best. As with all of the Willie Black books, this one is populated with interesting, often idiosyncratic, characters. The more books you read, the more you enjoy them.

I enjoy the continuing adventures of Willie Black and other characters. Howard Owen adds humor to a good mystery.

The Bottoms Out

I enjoyed Owen's first two Richmond mysteries, but this one got too bogged down in the many problems facing newspapers and newspapers. Really slowed the action.

Fast paced; suspenseful; good narration.

I enjoyed this fast-paced, well-plotted, suspenseful mystery that comes with a side of light banter to balance the gruesome deaths. My rating 4.5.

Manny is a dedicated, driven, workaholic police detective. He loves his wife and daughter but that doesnt stop him from getting pulled away when he is deep in pursuit of a killer. He gets along well with his partner, Sophie, who, even though married, seems to flirt a bit - okay outrageously - especially with one of the FBI agents they have been working with. Manny has his own draw to resist in the form of a female FBI agent.

Manny and Sophie are just getting into the investigation of a local murder binge that appears to be targeting men of ill repute, known for hurting or mistreating women. Although the vigilante killer (or killers) may be ridding society of some real low life, still its murder. Before Manny gets deep into the forensics, where he likes to dig, he gets a call he doesnt want to hear.

Another serial killer, and Mannys nemesis, Dr. Fredrick Argyle, is on the killing path again and is baiting Manny to catch him. This guy is very brutal and creepy, reminding me of Hannibal Lecter.

Manny and his team speed off to the new crime scene where Dr. Argyle leaves a few mutilated bodies and warnings that Manny and his family and friends are not safe. Back home, Mannys own boss is shot at point blank range leaving Manny another killer to track.

The story makes clear shifts between the murder investigations keeping the reader/listener keyed to gather the clues. The author skillfully hints at suspects that do not seem probable but one never quite knows what might cause someone to snap.

Although the plot deals with some gruesome murders, the author manages to maintain a certain lightness in the friendship of the characters and the depth of love among the family. The comedic banter seems natural as a release to ease the tensions of their gritty jobs. Mr. Murcer does a good job with each element: strong characters, skillfully plotted mysteries with red-herring clues and twists, and high levels of action and suspense. I really enjoyed the forensic details and mind thinking that Manny sorts through trying to get ahead of the killers.

The story is sprinkled with cursing, as might be expected with cops and killers, but, as far as I can recall, the author doesnt use the worst of the words. I really enjoyed the fast-paced style and the strong, engaging protagonist. Although this can be read without having read the first book, it made me wish that I had read that one first. Also, this ends with open lines for new changes in the next book.

Great info on history of DC in a great murder mystery

Really enjoyed this book. Much of it took place in my neighborhood of SW DC. The research about the neighborhoods was really great. School names, rib joints, old dance clubs, all sorts of details right in place. I learned some of the backstory of DC that is not well-covered in history books. Ever heard of "red summer?"

Very insightful about class distinctions among African-Americans in DC and elsewhere and about how class, wealth and political connections affect whether a murder is a back (or no page ) story or a front page above-the-fold epic. Deals also with the effect of the ever-encroaching gentrification in this town. I'm typically not a murder mystery fan, but this is about urban sociology.

Mr. Tucker is very, very good. I read his first book in this, series, the Ways of the Dead. Hope "Sully" will be back real soon.

I also enjoyed the reader. This was my first audio book & I stayed up past 3am to listen to the end of it. The only problem for me is that the audiobook slowed my old iPad to a crawl. Next 1 I buy will have more storage.

Another Excellent Read!

This author was so ahead of his time! The story is both riveting and entertaining! The characters are very believable and the prejudice against a nudist lifestyle as well addressing the prejudice towards the color of the leading character, Virgil Gibbs. I truly wish I had discovered this author a long time ago. Truly entertaining and an exceptional read.

The series was recommended by Penguin Classics book club. It's a shame that the TV show has misrepresented the books. They're absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to finish the series

great book

Great book. Just as good as the first one, "In the Heat of the Night." I intend to read all of the Virgil Tibbs mysteries.

Virgil Tibbs rules!

This is the second of John Ball's books featuring his most famous creation, Virgil Tibbs, the Black homicide investigator from Pasadena, California. Ball, who was a nudist, explores that life style when a body is found in the pool of a nudist resort. "Cottontail" is a person who covers their genitals when sunbathing, hence a white streak about the hips. "Cool" means "dead". The victims tan lines make it clear that he is not a nudist, but great lengths have been taken to obscure his identity while making sure that the body is found promptly: a seeming contradiction.

Ball not only spins an interesting tales about a well-developed character, he explores issues of race, as well as conformity and individuality. Virgil generally gets along with most people, but struggles to keep his calm when racism faces him again. At several points, characters must decide whether to stand by Virgil and face the anger or disgust of racists, or whether abandon him to avoid friction. First published in 1966, the book has held up well. And alas, the racial issues are still alive today.

The one weakness in the story is that Ball does not give all the clues to the reader. Since I read mysteries as novels, rather than attempting to solve them, this doesn't bother me, but may be annoying to some readers. At the end of the (first two books at least), Virgil assembles the cast to explain the solution.

A series that deserves to survive as a classic.

Regret means you cant go back.

I purchased due to reader as I am a new fan of Ms Early. My fave is Rachel Gibsons romance, Rescue Me, not be be missed if you like romance and want to see the full talent of Ms Early. She reads Karin Slaughter mystery books which are great, but you must have a very strong stomach. I didnt sleep for a week after my first Slaughter book!

These 2 authors have potential to the start of a decent series. They must get just a bit better editing if they are to succeed. In this story, the byline might be:

You can only prove now what you are capable of and not go back to repair the past.

Good, will set you free.

Do the right thing now even if afraid.

I loved all the secondary characters, and this story seemed a bit like chick lit, which I do like, but if authors want the big time, then they will have to bring it up a notch e.g. Marcia Clarks Samantha Brinkman series, read by my fave Ms Angela Dawe.

Note: I do use the new 1.25x speed to best enjoy the authors.

FANTASTIC

This mystery starts off right from the get go and is almost possible to stop listening to!!! I loved it!

Couldn't put it down.

Loved the book, and it did turn out with a great ending. However the murderer wasn't who I thought it was going to be.

Quirky and Excellent!!

Very enjoyable, great narration. Really enjoyed the ending. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys time travel literature.

Just Average Time Travel Mystery

Average story about a man who gets to, mysteriously, relive pieces of his past, with different outcomes, all in order to figure a tragic mystery from his college days and achieve overall contentment in his current life.

The book tried to foster a moral/spiritual lesson narrative to tie the time frames together, but because it was awkwardly applied, this message often gets lost in the proceedings entirely.

Narration is not as good as many other books I've listened to previously. The Voice Artist's voice is clear and strong; but, peculiar phrasing and inflection takes away from overall. performance.

Overall an average read to pass the time - if someone absolutely needs a time travel fix and is having problems finding a book in this genre.

A disappointing production

Promised a lot and delivered the predictable. Narration editing poor. Could be a lot better. Enjoyed nevertheless.
