  • A Mission for Military spouses, R. Riveter handbags, and Shark Tank

    R. Riveter is a company started by two Army spouses that employ other military spouses across the country to create beautiful and meaningful handbags and gifts that represent the stories of each woman who worked on them. Their business model allows these women to have productive and flexible careers while following their military spouses from one assignment to the next. Just like their namesake, R. Riveter, is a symbol of a true purpose-driven sisterhood, one that aims to help create a better future for everyone.

Teaming up with “Shark” and billionaire investor Mark Cuban in 2016 allowed for much of this expansion.

The company was started by Lisa Bradley and Cameron Cruise.

    Lisa Bradley, CEO/Co-Founder

Lisa grew up in Columbus, MT–a small Rocky Mountain town. She studied Business and Entrepreneurship in the “big city” of Bismarck, ND, where she met Jason Bradley. Soon after, she married into the Army and the two enjoyed four duty stations in just over six years. Lisa combined a “roll up the sleeves” mentality with her MBA to launch R. Riveter with her friend and co-founder, Cameron Cruse. Lisa was named one of the 25 people changing the future of retail in 2019 by the National Retail Foundation.

    Cameron Cruse, CCO/Co-Founder

Cameron Cruse co-founded R. Riveter in 2011 and set out to provide mobile, flexible income for military spouses across the country. She graduated from SCAD, first with a BFA in 2010, and then again with a master’s in architecture in 2011.From 2014-2021 she lived in Southern Pines, NC with her family which became home for the company’s flagship Retail store. She is currently living life “tiny” in an RV with her family as they build their dream home and start their next chapter in the great state of Texas. Cameron was named one of the25 people changing the future of retail in 2019 by the NRF and Apparel’s 30 under 30 in 2018. Cameron is a mother of two and proud Military Spouse. She is a firm believer that we are stronger together than we are apart.

Sara talks with Lisa and Cameron all about their story and progress with their business and as Military spouses, Lisa and Cameron joined together to do something not only creative, but also created jobs for other military spouses that move around a lot. Bradley and Cruse looked to the original Rosie the Riveter for inspiration. Today, R. Riveter’s unique production model puts military spouses to work, crafting components of the handbags from their homes, no matter where they live or how often they move.

They talk also about their successful appearance on Shark Tank in 2016 and made a match with entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Hear how they talked of backing out prior to their appearance. And how they pushed themselves to do a hard thing and how it so paid off. They were off on a faster growth track and it’s worked out for their thriving business.

Riveter continues to grow its network of military spouses "R. Riveter doesn't hire military spouses to make handbags. We make handbags to hire military spouses, and create a greater sense of mission," said Cruse. Military spouses also hold roles in product design, project management, marketing, and more.

What can be more timely now than highlighting these entrepreneurs with a mission? Military spouses is it’s own community.. moving every few years, being the stay-at-home mom, holding things together while their husbands can be anywhere and in various degrees of danger. R.Riveter holds the community in a circle of creativity, community and earning potential for the spouses.

  • The story of the beige tank top: The Little Things in Life Do Matter

Sara receives an Amazon package of new tank tops, but has no idea who they are from. This begins a process of Sara reflecting on her trusty beige tank top, and the things that make us feel safe, and the knowledge that it’s all the small moments that add up to what we call life.

When we have lived through difficult times, and we find something we like, we hold on to it and it helps us feel safe, good and whole.

For Sara, it has been her beige tank top. Whatever “thing” brings you comfort, whatever it is, reminds us of times when it was with us, and we can look back and remember we felt a bit safer with it by our side. And most importantly, we can often look back over how far we have come.

The tank top went with Sara to her first Ted talk in 2019, it’s gone to dinners, it’s gone on mountain climbs, and been through multiple human interactions. It reminds us that even in moments when we don’t know what will happen, the littlest things in life are what matters.

Sara says: Find your piece of comfort and stay with it, whether it’s a lip gloss, teddy bear, or tank top.

Whatever it is, is most important.

Something simple can send your thoughts back and you realize that all the little stories along the way… Those are what create your LIFE.

And if any of you know who sent the Amazon package, please let me know!

  • Shelby Stanger: Adventures Great and Small, Courage and Awe with Sara

Shelby Stanger is a Journalist, Speaker, Podcaster, and Adventurer.

Over the years, her work has appeared everywhere from Outside Magazine to ESPN. Prior to becoming a full-time storyteller and consultant, Shelby worked at the iconic shoe company, Vans, where she helped oversee all the women’s branding and later the international marketing for the Americas and Australasia regions. She later served as a media consultant to brands including Nike and Body Glove.

Always chasing adventure herself, Shelby has surfed from Canada to Costa Rica; sand-boarded down desolate dunes in Cape Town; paddled down a remote portion of the Amazon River; and interviewed countless CEOs, athletes, activists, and thought leaders. Her first book is called Will to Wild: Adventures Great and Small to Change Your Life.

In these pages, you will find stories with practical tips and tactics from world-famous rock climbers and ultra-runners, to longtime thru-hikers, surfers, and even a suburban mom who started teaching women to scale frozen waterfalls in her mid-fifties.

Her Podcast is Vitamin Joy with Shelby Stanger.

In this episode, Shelby and Sara talk about how getting into the outdoors solves so many issues for almost everyone. You can be paddling or surfing in the ocean or just doing gardening in your backyard. Sara and Shelby are both adventurers and talk about what the outdoors does for them and how it often kicks you into action, and gets you moving even if it means facing fears. They both have seen the outdoors change lives.

They talk about getting unstuck, how to pay attention to “trail signs” that point you toward your adventure, and how to face your fears. Shelby and Sara’s work encourages you to break out of your comfort zones, get out into nature, and create the life you dream of.

  • What Are You Carrying That Is Not Yours? Let It Go! With Sara

As a survivor of relational and betrayal trauma and complex-PTSD, Sara was debilitated by the unknown as her marriage and life collapsed, living as a single mom. Emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically unraveling, she found herself at a precipice: She could lose her true life through all of this, or find a new self. Her resilient self chose the latter.

She made a point every day of getting outside, navigating through anger, pain, and grief while hiking 14,000 ft mountains and paddling 4 miles out to sea with whales and dolphins. She somatically healed her heart, mind, and body through nature while practicing the art of resiliency and forgiveness. A new version of Sara with a larger smile, a longer laugh, and a love for her present life evolved. The gift of her trauma was finding her most important relationship: the one within one’s self. It led her to taking groups to the Grand Canyon and other beautiful adventure spots and combine nature, physical activity, coaching and helping people let go of what they don’t need.

That is the reason for the Live Boldly podcast. Sara shares her own stories and brings guests to the table to talk about theirs and hopefully help you get to actionable steps to become more resilient, and to use resiliency as the foundation for living authentically, courageously and joyfully.

In today’s episode, Sara talks about What we All Carry that is not Ours and the point when she decided to take the heavy Rocks out of her backpack and put them somewhere else, not on her back!

She was on a hike in the Sequoia’s during a traumatic time in her marriage and her friend Steve was secretly adding rocks to her backpack. At one point she was looking for a snack and she saw the rocks..she didn’t know why. Steve kept adding more rocks.

At a path, Sara overlooked the most beautiful valley and realized how large and beautiful the world is and how somewhat insignificant we are. At that moment, many things clicked and Sara decided she was not going to carry others’ burdens anymore. She took the rocks out of her bag.

She didn’t need to stay in the pain, nor take on others’ pain and continue to walk in it. She let go of the rocks that weighed her down, she let go of the secrets, she made a decision about divorce and a decision to Move forward.

There are a number of truths that may resonate with you while listening to this episode.

Create an impact in your life today!

  • Merril Hoge on Sports, Parenting and Self-Reflection w/Sara

Merril Hoge is a former professional American football player. He played eight seasons at running back for the National Football League (NFL's) Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears, retiring after the 1994 season. In 1996 he became a football analyst for ESPN television until 2017.

During a road game in 1994 against the Kansas City Chiefs, Hoge suffered a concussion and, five days later, the team doctor approved him to resume playing during a telephone call without examining him to determine if he had recovered; he was still suffering post-concussion symptoms.

Hoge sustained another concussion several weeks later, and had to be resuscitated after he stopped breathing. He spent 48 hours in the intensive-care unit and was forced to retire due to brain injury. Hoge had to learn to read again and experienced memory loss, confusion and headaches.

In 2003, Hoge was diagnosed with stage II Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hoge commented on this: It is destroyable, it is beatable. You have everything in you to do it. The mind is a powerful thing. There is no doubt, come May, I'll be cancer free; five years after that, I'll be cured. Fifty years or whatever time I have left after that, it will be the platform I stand for. I'll be a better man. This has been a blessing.

Sara and Merril talk about sports, parenting sports kids, leadership and his slogan by which to live your life: “Find a Way”.

Merril talks about his life journey and how as a father, player and leader, he learned the power of self-reflection as a way of looking at situations differently and learning different ways than his father may have showed him.

Self-reflection helps in building resiliency and to live a life that you don’t live to regret. He also shares tools for parenting that made a difference in his parenting: He judges kids in yardsticks of how many years they have lived.. do not assume they think like an adult. He is a believer of patience and keeping perspective at all times.

Hoge reminds us that what are children see us do, they do- so we are responsible for modelling the right behavior.

Merril’s wisdom is shared and we can all learn from a man who has been a football star, but also has gone through enough of life’s challenges to learn from those as well.

  • Stop Procrastinating! & #Create it! with Sara

Sara talks from the heart about our tendency to Procrastinate and how that is not honoring ourselves.

Procrastinating is NOT putting ourselves first. We need to stop putting a stop to what we know we want, our passion, our soul purpose. We must stop procrastinating and we must start taking care of ourselves. Put yourself first (as much as you can). We all have other responsibilities, and some of those we love and cherish, but remember to make room for you.

What will it take to put ourselves first? We need to train ourselves to do it.

Don’t stop living. When Sara was hiking up a side of a mountain with her friend Steve they talked about how people should live life making themselves happy - Even if they are ridiculed at times for what they want.

Sara loves working with people. It’s what drives her. And Steve came up with the slogan: #Create it! Be how you want to be in this world. Stop procrastinating and remember to help yourself. It’s the soul and heart of you.

Sara shares some tips of how to get to a non - procrastination flow:

1.Give yourself self - compassion. We are all busy. If you don’t get to everything, you will get it done, even if a few things have to be for tomorrow

2.Determine what your #1 non-negotiable thing you have to get done today. At minimum, do that.

3.Make sure you set up some reward for the completion of that task. Maybe a SUP in the ocean, maybe a coffee with a friend.

4.Remind yourself it is a gift to get to do what you need or want to do.

Listening to this episode may get you to commit to stop procrastinating one task and you will be on the road to what that feels like. Join me!!!

  • Transparent talk with Partners The Angry Therapist, John Kim and therapist Vanessa Bennett

John Kim, The Angry Therapist and his partner, Vanessa Bennett talk with Sara about relationships, the book they wrote together, sex, and life. John, LMFT, is a published writer, speaker, host of his popular podcast, The Angry Therapist Podcast, and co-founder of Lumia–Life Coach Training and Community.

Vanessa Bennett, LMFT is an author, holistic psychotherapist, and codependency expert. Her therapeutic approach integrates years of study and practice in Depth, Buddhist, and Yoga Psychology. She co-hosts the Cheaper Than Therapy Podcast, leads soul-based retreats and workshops, and creates and facilitates curriculum for non-profit and corporate events and conferences.

Together, they have a child, plus they co-authored a book last year called It's Not Me, It's You: Break the Blame Cycle. Relationship Better.

In the book they analyze their own relationship to help untangle the common and frustrating barriers many individuals face on the road to a happy, loving, rewarding partnership.

It took them many relationships, their own inner self journey, therapy, therapy school, and helping thousands of people with their relationships, to learn to have better ones ourselves. Vanessa woke up at 31, after ending an engagement and moving to Los Angeles. John thought he woke up at 35 after his divorce. But he didn’t truly wake up until he was pushing 40.

In It’s Not Me, It’s You, and in this podcast, John and Vanessa dissect their own relationship to help readers figure out theirs: what their relationships were like in the past, what traumas they carried into the new relationship, and how they work on growing together to foster a healthy and long-term bond.

John, Vanessa and Sara talk about relationships, their relationship, co-dependency, hyper independence, intimacy, showing up, fear of abandonment, sex and all things honest about themselves and how they view their work.

  • You Are Limitless: Sara’s climb thru the Sierra High Route and Life

Sara’s solo episode comes on her return from her climb on the Sierra High Route. A rugged 195-mile hike of which she did part last year and another part this year, with over 100 miles of off-trail travel, through both idyllic sub-alpine forest and tedious talus (rock) fields. It is a rugged alternate to the John Muir Trail (JMT)– it boasts about 100 miles of cross-country travel, numerous Class III scrambles, and endless miles of boulder hopping.

Sara uses this solo episode to talk about her experiences on the trails and how they proved to be symbolic for life and reminders for us all to know we are Limitless.

She talks of 3 specific times on her week long trek that proved life’s lessons. When she was at the Frozen Lake Pass, the second most dangerous Pass and she realized she was feeling fear, not her normal excitement. She stated to her hiking partners “I am afraid”. She relays how they supported her and reminded her she had done a scary Pass last year and got through it. She did.

She also talks about how she is usually the last in line of fellow hikers. And to remember it’s ok to be last. She was alone at a very snowy/icy part and no one was around. She froze up and had to really talk to herself to push through without her spikes on.

    She made it.

And her takeaway for herself and all of you, listeners is We go to what could happen, but instead we should pay attention to what goes right. When we proceed with Bravery, we are LIMITLESS.

Listen to this episode for a diary of her climb, and some reminders of how we’ve Got this!!! Go Forward and grab your LIFE!

  • We Can Do the Difficult! with Sara Schulting Kranz

In this solo episode, Sara talks about the start of her new campaign Live Boldly and “Do The Difficult” starting this week on Instagram.

We all want to Live Boldly, we want to do the things we know we want to do, and we don’t want to be stopped by our own fears.

Sometimes it’s something small, sometimes big, but we know we need to just push ourselves and once we do it, we set ourselves free to move forward in a much better way.

We open ourselves up for more amazing things and we feel good. Whether it’s having a difficult conversation, signing up for the gym or that yoga class- maybe it’s finally taking the step to sign papers you’ve been avoiding- whatever it is Sara is creating a support group where you can state what your week’s task to tackle is and you can also let us know how it went. Then all the other people will be motivated by reading your comments and be there with compassion, cheers, and support for you! Let’s create a ripple effect!!

Live Boldly! Live this incredible life! Live it on your own terms. Sara shares how she may be a little ahead of the learning curve of doing the hard things… and living Life boldly. Yes, she climbs huge mountains, yes, she paddles out 10 miles into the ocean…but she wasn’t always like that.

She can be there to provide a forum and accountability.

We are made up of our past, our stories, our patterns that may be holding us back. Most important is to believe in yourself. Put your challenge for the week on a post-it on your fridge, on your phone and be clear on it. Set your goals and intention. And start. That’s the hardest part.

Sara talks about doing what is on top of your heart, what’s top of your mind. Hear her 7 steps on this podcast and sit with it each week.
