Michel Paradis currently serves as a senior attorney for the Department of Defense, Office of the Chief Defense Counsel. In that role, he is regularly appointed to represent detainees held at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has argued numerous cases before the nation’s highest courts and has contributed to scholarly publications on the subjects of international humanitarian law and terrorism.

Sander HicksVisionary writer. Independent publisher. Award-winning social-change businessman. Sander Hicks has spoken widely across the USA, on five national speaking tours, ranging from radical bookstores to Stanford Law School. Hicks is a veteran of several electoral and ballot effort campaigns with various progressive and reform movements. Hicks was elected the President of the Cortelyou Road Merchants Association in 2003.

Sanders is running for Congress 2018 election.

Oliver Darcy is a senior media reporter for CNN, writing at the intersection of media and politics.

Prior to CNN, Darcy was the politics editor for Business Insider, where he oversaw a team of reporters and covered national politics. He was also the deputy managing editor of TheBlaze.

Darcy graduated from the University of California, Merced, with a degree in political science.

He specializes in the history of New York City, and in the history and practice of "public history". In 1998 he co-authored Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898, which in 1999 won the Pulitzer Prize in History. An episode About Scientology. A look from the inside. We speak with Karen Pressley (Author of Escaping Scientology) about her time spent trapped within the cult. Also in the studio are Karen Margolis and Tommy O Malley from the Unhireable Podcast

We first learn from Pressley about the ideology behind Scientology. L. Ron Hubbard created a religion that promotes self power, claiming followers have supernatural abilities. There is no praying, worshiping, or god. There is only believing that they are god like. This mentality is established from the very beginning auditing process. This mentality, Karen explains, changes how followers handle conflict. This is all part of “the con”. These are the “steps of the bridge”, as recruits unknowingly surrender control of their free will.

Pressley had worked her way up the ladder as a recruiter, and into the ranks of the Sea Organization. which the Church of Scientology describes as a "fraternal religious order, comprising the church's most dedicated members" All Scientology management organizations are controlled exclusively by members of the Sea Org. David Miscavige, the de facto leader of Scientology, is the highest-ranking Sea Org officer, holding the rank of captain.

She, at one point, was a celebrity recruiter. We hear about her run-ins with big celebrities at the time, such as Frank Stallone, John Travolta, Mimi Rogers, Paul Haggis, Jason Beghe, Leah remini, Nicole Kidman, and Katies Holmes. Shockingly enough, she remembers trying to recruit Cher.

The most dangerous element of leaving Scientology, Pressley describes, is the strict policies in place for those who leave. The religion created the “Fair Game” policy, which was the church’s self-proclaimed right to defend itself from those they see as a threat to their religion.

After trying to leave the church once, she was transferred to the RPF The Rehabilitation Project Force, or RPF, is the Church of Scientology's program for members of its Sea Organization who have allegedly violated expectations or policies. During her second attempt to leave, her husband did not want to join her. And that was the last time they saw each other. They were forced to divorce by mail. And her husband, despite his willingness to stay, was put in dreaded “Hole” (a place of confinement and humiliation).

All of our guests, including some journalists, agreed that the article published on Babe.net about Aziz Ansari was very shoddy reporting.

Some questions we ask the room: How would you have handled the article writing / publishing differently? What kind of conversation should we be having with our children in a world where "hookup culture" is reaching younger and younger youths? Do the differences between men and women factor into the analysis and punishment of sexual misconduct? How much should alcohol factor into our behaviors?
