We’re bringing in the professionals. Nancy Moscatiello and Scott Eldridge, veteran true crime television producers and hosts of The Slippery and Scamanda, join Live, Laugh, Larceny for a deep dive into the wild world of ’90s crime television, scams, investigations, and the stories that happened behind the scenes. We skip the Dreadful Dilemmas and get straight into their careers working on iconic crime and reality television shows including Crime Watch Daily, Hard Copy, Real TV, and America’s Most Wanted. First, Trevin puts their investigative memories to the test with Crime Academy Flashcards, an original game inspired by preschool flashcards. Each object or location sends Nancy and Scott into their archives, recalling bizarre investigations and revealing how crime television actually got made. A flashcard about a restaurant brings up the infamous Sunset Boulevard Denny’s brawl and the hunt for restaurant surveillance footage. A question about disguises leads to stories about the techniques early news investigators used to get access and information. A Chicago diner sparks memories of Mari Yang during the investigation into the murder of Chicago Bears safety Shaun Gale. Then the conversation gets stranger. A Patreon suggestion involving Ouija boards leads to the psychic scam known as the “Immaculate Deception,” while a flashcard about phones opens the door to wiretapping, the Andonian Brothers, and a California cartel known as The Mine. We also explore the history of Hard Copy and the evolution of “caught on tape” television, including how early reality news programs helped create the found-footage and true-crime television formats that dominated the ’90s. Even Entertainment Tonight gets pulled into the story of how the genre evolved. Other cases include Jose Lantigua, a Florida furniture store owner who faked his own death and claimed to have Mad Cow Disease, and the infamous Wendy’s finger-in-the-chili scandal involving Anna Ayala of San Jose. Nancy and Scott share behind-the-scenes knowledge about the case—including the strange petty crime committed after the original scandal. And because no episode featuring The Slippery would be complete without talking about scams, Amanda goes one-on-one with Nancy and Scott for her burning questions about Scamanda. We dig into Amanda Riley, the California blogger who falsely claimed to have Stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma and collected more than $100,000 in fraudulent donations, as Nancy and Scott offer their perspective on the case, the deception, and the hit true-crime series Scamanda. It’s ’90s crime TV, investigative journalism, scams, fraud, famous cases, behind-the-scenes television stories, and one very strange deck of flashcards. Take a break from the heavy and get petty! Things have been busy in the Live, Laugh, Larceny world, so this week we're taking a break from traditional petty crime for a day of bizarre Animals in the News. First, Trevin has a dog dilemma after his freshly groomed pups reveal their freshly groomed butts—and somehow, the sight is so adorable it brings him to tears. Amanda takes her daughters to see the newest Paw Patrol movie, only to discover that a broken theater AC can make a children's movie feel like a survival challenge. Then it's time for Animals in the News: no sound effects, no elaborate reenactments—just bizarre headlines about animals getting into trouble, causing chaos, and occasionally committing what can only be described as petty crimes. A black bear breaks into a shopping mall on a military base in Alaska, steals some fruit, and leaves behind a very memorable calling card. Another bear discovers an unexpected interest in golf clubs in British Columbia. A dog in Scotland needs rescuing after consuming marijuana while hiking near Ben Nevis, while an Australian beagle eats 11 kilograms of gummy snakes. A tourist in Hawaii faces consequences after allegedly throwing a rock at a monk seal, while therapy ferrets are deployed at one of the UK's largest children's prisons to help deal with a rat problem. And in Arizona, bright-blue pigeons used for a gender reveal spark concerns from wildlife officials. It's animals, crime, weird headlines, and a whole lot of scat. Hold your nose for this one, because things are about to get explosive. This week, Trevin falls down a nostalgia rabbit hole after discovering the functional reboot of Slice soda, while Amanda faces every parent's favorite annual tradition: back-to-school shopping. Between the madness and the prices, she may never financially recover. For a special round of Would You Rather, Trevin brings us the incredible story of David Cifaldi, a 32-year-old nurse who impaled himself with a trekking pole and then hiked ten miles to avoid being airlifted. The question: would you rather pay the medical bill or make the ten-mile hike? Amanda brings us two spectacular QVC fails, inspired by the recent viral wig-selling mishap involving Toni Brattin. Would you rather say something catastrophically wrong on live television—or suffer a physical mishap that makes you an internet sensation? Then things get seriously gross. Trevin tells the bizarre story of Mark Mortimer of Lydbrook, England, whose disastrous night involves breaking and entering, a bomb, an explosive bowel movement, and a sandwich that definitely did not deserve what happened to it at the Lydbrook & District Community Social Club. Amanda brings us the strange workplace bullying lawsuit of David Hingst, who sued his former employer Greg Short of Construction Engineering for $1.8 million, claiming years of relentless farting and workplace harassment caused him severe psychological distress. Can a workplace fart lawsuit actually find justice—or is the whole thing destined to become the butt of a joke? With Stinky, explosions, bodily functions, QVC disasters, and enough toilet humor to make you question your life choices, this one is not for the faint of nose. It's Labor Day week and we are rewinding it back to our second listener stories episode: EP 159: Now That's What I Call Listener Stories Vol. 2 Ring the bell and tell your friends. We’ve got another ALL-LISTENER-STORIES episode! And since we’re taking a trip back through the Live, Laugh, Larceny archives, we’re bringing back one of our favorite collections of bizarre true crime stories, petty crimes, ridiculous criminals, and listener-submitted crimes. But before we hear from our awesome listeners, we gotta do the show stuff. This week, Trevin encounters a cursed Chipotle salad that he leaves sitting on his desk for an entire weekend, while Amanda discovers that bringing Jell-O to a kid’s birthday party does NOT mean people are getting Jell-O shots. Top 5 takes a closer look at the polygraph and lie detector test, including its bizarre history and some of the earliest attempts at figuring out whether someone was lying. Then Trevin counts down five of the most common—and most ridiculous—causes of selfie-related deaths, from guns and electrocution to driving, drowning, and falling. Then, we get to the main event: three petty, bizarre, and completely listener-submitted stories. Amanda tells the story of a disgruntled bakery employee who destroys cakes before quitting, including one cake that just happens to have been ordered by one of our own listeners. Trevin investigates the mystery of a person who wiped their butt on a towel at a party, giving one listener the chance to play detective and figure out who committed the truly shitty crime. And, of course, we’ve got another round of funny true crime, petty criminals, strange crimes, and the weirdest stories our listeners could dig up.
