  • Training principles that apply to life

I've learned so many amazing principles and skills from my time as a soldier, and as a coach in the fitness industry, that are relevant and transferable to all aspects of life.

Last week I spoke with Marshall of Anvil Training and Development, and we briefly mentioned some of these principles.

In this episode, I dive a lot deeper into what those principles are, how they relate to my coaching and training philosophy, and provide real world examples of how they apply to other areas.

    1.  FITT
    • Frequency
    • Intensity
    • Time
    • Type

           2. SPRAID

    • Specificity
    • Progressive overload
    • Recovery
    • Adaptation
    • Individualisation
    • Detraining/reversability

  • Marshall Officer of Anvil Training and Development

Welcome back to the Live Train Perform podcast to Marshall of Anvil Training and Development.

Marshall and I met whilst we were undertaking our veteran run, veteran heavy yoga course in Australia at the start of 2020. This course was intended to provide the tools necessary for the attendees to take back to their networks to disseminate quality information to allow veterans to manage their minds, however these tools have many practical applications that pertain to the wider community also. He is the OG of the Coaches Corner episodes, which came up as an idea after many great conversations with other coaches in the space around what we see happening in the fitness industry, and sharing tools that we've adopted after many years of solving problems for our clients and athletes.

    In this conversation we discuss:

    1.  The fallout from the events unfolding in Afghanistan in recent weeks, and how that is impacting the veteran community that served in that theatre
    2. How the principles that you learn on your fitness journey can be applied to many other aspects of your life
    3. The benefits of finding a quality community for mutual support on your fitness journey

  • Live in the process, not the outcome

Last week I spoke with Nic Edgerton  about the principles and protocols he uses with his physique athletes, and something he said piqued my interest, and that is, "I tell my guys to live 90% in the process, and 10% in the outcome."

In this episode, I dive a little deeper into this subject, and give some actionable examples of how to use the OODA loop set up your routine to ensure that you are focusing on the process, which will inevitably take you on the journey to achieving your goals.

    • Observe
    • Orient
    • Decide
    • Act

Whilst you can't predict the future, you can influence it.
When you take care of the process, the process takes care of the outcome.

  • Nic Edgerton on what it takes to train, and look like a bodybuilder

In this episode, I speak with Nic Edgerton about the journey that took him from competing as a physique athlete, to becoming one of the leading physique coaches to come out of Australia in recent years.

Nic has a global reach, and has coached hundreds of transformations worldwide, along with over a hundred top three placings of his athletes in numerous bodybuilding and physique competitions in season 2019/20.

This conversation covers a lot of ground, and we both give practical advice and actionable takeaways for the audience at pivotal moments along the way.
    Topics covered include:

    • The difference between bodybuilding and physique competition
    • Nic's journey from athlete to coach
    • Advice to aspiring coaches, and those already working with a coach
    • What he looks for in his athletes, and what his athletes can expect from him
    • Periodisation of training, nutrition, recovery, and performance enhancing drugs
    • "Steroids are the icing on the cake"
    • "Get the most from the least"

I met Nic almost a year ago through social and training networks, and we've built a friendship over that time.  I have so much faith in Nic and the principles he lives and trains by, that I've handed over some of my clients to him to look after whilst I am currently away in fight camp with one of my athletes.

  • Remedial drills to deal with chronic pain

"Wait until you're my age, you'll understand what I'm talking about."

Everyone has heard this uttered to them by many different people, multiple times over the years. I can't recall how many times I've heard this...yet, I'm the one saying it now.

As we age, we are accumulating more and more dysfunctional patterns and muscular imbalances. The less time we spend on addressing them, the more they will start speaking to us.
If I have two parallel lines, it doesn't mater how far I follow them, the distance between them will remain the same. However, if they are only 1 degree apart, I won't see the discrepancy close to the origin, however, the further I move away from the origin, the more apparent that discrepancy becomes. Our joints are the same. This is where discomfort becomes pain. This pain is our "check engine light" informing us something is not quite right.

Understanding recruitment patterns can help us identify when things are working well, as well as when they are not. When we identify less than optimal recruitment patterns, or joint misalignment, we can then address them to help manage, improve, and even alleviate chronic pain.

  • My thoughts on Afghanistan

I have been accused of being a baby killer.
I have been called a puppet of my Government sent to invade another country and do the dirty work on the ground.
I've been assured that the work that my teams and I did was a waste of time and that the lives we lost was karma for being in another country.
The list of accusations and verbal abuse and simple ignorance goes on and on...however I don't lose any sleep about the opinions of others that haven't been in my boots, yet shout the loudest about war being unjust and morally wrong etc.

Regardless of what the official Government title or role of each battlegroup was, my job was to look after my mates to the best of my ability, along with the Afghani soldiers and security forces we were mentoring to provide stability in their own country once we left.
Some of these soldiers had experienced life under the Taliban regime. We fought side by side with them, and we earned their respect, as they did ours. They knew we would one day leave the country, and the weight of the country would be left on their shoulders.
We also worked with soldiers whom had not experienced the Taliban regime. They were lazy. They were high all the time. They ran at the first sign of trouble, and left us on our own to fight our way out of sticky situations. They expected us to be there to save their arses, and acted accordingly. We didn't trust them.
Unfortunately, the majority of the soldiers we worked with were the latter, so it's no surprise to see the rapid decline of security forces in Afghanistan recently, with the Taliban strolling back into power.

A lot of people that had boots on the ground are struggling with the fact that Afghanistan was retaken so easily, after 20 years, countless lives and injuries/casualties, and trillions of dollars spent trying to build a better future for the local people.
If you're in that position, rest assured that your contribution showed a generation of Afghanis what life could be like, and hopefully, inspires the resistance to rise up and crush the Taliban's reign of terror that has flared up across the country once again.
I have no doubt that the atrocities that will be shared to the world in the coming weeks and months will have people calling for us to go back in and do something. Undoubtedly, these will be the same people that were calling for us to leave...

The recent pictures and videos of civilians desperately trying to escape should paint a picture as to how terrified people are of the Taliban, and the grim future that most Afghani's will likely face.
My thoughts are with my Afghani brothers who stood side by side with Australian soldiers to fight a common enemy, as well as for those who cannot defend themselves.

  • Wes Masters MC (Military Cross)

Wes Masters was awarded the Military Cross by Her Majesty The Queen for his actions on the battlefield in Afghanistan on the 4th of July 2013.

Wes ran hundreds of metres across dangerous ground surrounded by Taliban firing points, carrying heavy equipment, in stifling heat to tend to his comrade who had taken a shot in the throat from a Taliban sharp-shooter.  His actions kept the wounded soldier in the fight. That wounded soldier was a sniper, who then went on to have a significant impact on the battle, and undoubtedly preserved the lives of many of his teammates, whilst reducing the threat and capability of the enemy they were fighting.

That injured comrade was Simon Moloney, who was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for his actions on that same day. Simon has told his side of the story in a previous episode of the podcast.

    This is Wes Masters' story.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • Why Wes joined the Military
    • His journey through the training process, to the battlefield
    • "Every day is a legs day"
    • The events that unfolded on that life defining day
    • Being awarded the Military Cross by the Queen
    • Mental health implications upon discharging from the Military
    • The tools Wes has used to build himself towards the man he aspires to be

Be prepared for some dark humour, too much swearing, and previously untold stories.

  • Understanding the menstrual cycle and the implications on performance and recovery with Leo Tyson

I met Leo Tyson of Tyson Transformations many years ago in Phuket, Thailand, when he came onboard as one of my interns at Tiger Muay Thai.
In the years since, I've interacted with him numerous times, and have always been impressed by his knowledge and application of principle-based coaching.

One area where Leo stands out in my network of coaches, is his ability to break down and explain in simple terms, female specific physiology.

This episode dives into that topic in as much digestible and actionable detail as we could fit into a 90 minute episode.

    Topics covered include:

    • What prompted Leo to explore female specific physiology
    • Understanding the menstrual cycle
    • The hormonal effects that occur through each phase of the cycle
    • How these hormonal changes can pertain to relationships
    • The importance of tracking the menstrual cycle
    • Why the data within these phases should influence lifestyle decisions
    • How to factor in these hormonal changes when it comes to training, nutrition and recovery

"I shouldn’t be in the position I am right now."

The odds were stacked against me:

    ●       Poor family on welfare, eldest of 6 kids, parents didn’t work, abusive step-dad, no electricity or running water for a 6 years period of my life

    ●       Caught up with the wrong crowd, stealing, drugs, skipping school

    ●       At 14 years old, I sat on a bus for 3 days with $50 in my pocket, to travel to the next State over West, to begin a new life in the workforce - 2000

14 - 20: I grew up and learned how to become a man through work and rugby
20 - 26: I lived, trained and fought as a professional soldier, at a high level
26 - 32: I became a personal trainer, after failing in my pursuit to become a firefighter
32 - 38: I worked with, and won world titles with some of the best athletes on the planet, as their strength and conditioning coach

  • Coaches Corner: Opportunity vs Luck, and why you should be tracking data points

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that."

...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about.

In this third installment of a conversation I had with Jon Le Tocq of Storm Force Fitness, we discuss the differences between luck and opportunity, and why understanding that can impact how you approach your training and lifestyle decisions.

We round out the episode with a great discussion around the many benefits of tracking data points. I have covered these topics in a lot of detail in my early podcast episodes, which I will link below. I use the following tracking tools:

    • Basic health markers (https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/3771500-episode-3-progress-tracking-basic-health-markers.mp3?download=true)
    • Objective tracking tools (https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/3771551-episode-4-progress-tracking-objective-tracking.mp3?download=true
    • Subjective tracking tools (https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/3767621-episode-5-progress-tracking-tools-subjective-tracking.mp3?download=true)

Fitness for me is being able to do whatever I want to do, at any time, with minimal limitations, because I've prepared myself to be able to perform at a multitude of tasks across a broad spectrum of skills acquired through a targeted, periodised training program.

Please note that the original conversation went for about 90 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/have been dropped as separate episodes.
