  • Weekly/Daily Training Structure with Will Foden

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that."

...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about.

In this conversation I had with Will Foden, we discuss how we recommend being "80% of the way there," all year round. So many people have the all or nothing mindset, and whilst that can be of service at different times, it shouldn't be the focus the majority of the time. A healthy organism is an adaptable organism. Train for health the majority of the time, then when the time is right, you can put the pedal down and train to optimize performance.

This can be a hassle for people trying to build structure whilst going through a lock-down or quarantine period, however, we give some great advice and training templates to allow you to manipulate the tools you have at your disposal, to focus on moving the needle in the right direction, whilst focusing on what is within your control.

Please note that the original conversation went for about 90 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/have been dropped as separate episodes.

Shaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life.

"I shouldn’t be in the position I am right now."

The odds were stacked against me:

    ●       Poor family on welfare, eldest of 6 kids, parents didn’t work, abusive step-dad, no electricity or running water for a 6 years period of my life

    ●       Caught up with the wrong crowd, stealing, drugs, skipping school

    ●       At 14 years old, I sat on a bus for 3 days with $50 in my pocket, to travel to the next State over West, to begin a new life in the workforce - 2000

14 - 20: I grew up and learned how to become a man through work and rugby
20 - 26: I lived, trained and fought as a professional soldier, at a high level
26 - 32: I became a personal trainer, after failing in my pursuit to become a firefighter
32 - 38: I worked with, and won world titles with some of the best athletes on the planet, as their strength and conditioning coach

  • Value Systems with Will Foden

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that."

...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about.

In this conversation I had with Will Foden, we discuss a course he completed recently, that focused on identifying, and building out a systematized set of values that he could then action and live in line with.

We both give examples of how we perceive, and utilize specific tools to ensure that we are optimizing our lives to be at our best, for ourselves, and for others.

The key areas of focus are:

    • Mental
    • Financial
    • Vocational
    • Spiritual
    • Familial
    • Physical
    • Social

Please note that the original conversation went for about 90 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/have been dropped as separate episodes.

  • It's not just what you do, it's how you do it

In this 5 minute fitness tips episode, I give some examples of using the same exercise, but changing how you do it, to elicit different physiological response and training outcomes.

The SAID principle stands for specific adaptations to imposed demands. Put simply, it means that you are going to adapt to not only what you do, but how you do it.

For example, I can use a push up to build stability and mobility in the shoulder girdle, hypertrophy (muscle building), strength (magnitude of force), power and speed (rate of force) and endurance (duration of force). How I execute the pushup, will determine the training adaptation.

This principle is extremely important to understand when adjusting the variables within a training session, to ensure that you are getting your biggest bang for buck, to achieve the purpose of not only that training session, but the overall goal within a focused block of periodisation.

I have also attached an episode on periodisation, along with my YouTube channel for reference.

    What is periodisation: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/5417098-what-is-periodisation.mp3?download=true

  • Client Corner: Damian Gilbert part 4

Damian is a friend, colleague and client.

He served his country, and experienced the highs and lows of war that most front-line soldiers share. From being blown up in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonation, to putting the pieces of his brothers back together in body bags. He suffered from debilitating mental and physical trauma whilst on deployment, however, unfortunately, the war didn't end when he returned to the United States.

Damian then served on the Police Force for a few years, prior to transitioning to becoming a personal trainer. I met Damo when he returned to Thailand to live, after previously visiting to travel and train. He was introduced to me, and we had a chat about his experiences, what he was doing in Thailand, and why he wanted to come and train out of Tiger Muay Thai.
I took him on as an intern, where he contributed to the fitness department, and was a valuable member of the team.

He now works as a private security contractor based in the Middle East.

Damo contacted me about coming on-board as an online client, and we share some of the most impactful tools and lessons that we have implemented in his life in this insightful conversation between coach and client.

This is part 4, and the final installment of a two and a half hour conversation.

  • Weight cutting principles for weight class athletes with Danny Lennon of Sigma Nutrition

In this episode, Danny and I discuss the similarities, and the differences between eating for health, and eating for performance.

We cover a lot of ground, and relate his nutritional principles to a broad spectrum of people from general population weekend warriors, to elite athletes.

Danny shares his approach to preparing professional fighters for fight camp, as well as fight week, acute weight cutting techniques, and re-hydration protocols.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable conversation with a leader in the industry! I recommend grabbing a notepad and pen.

Danny is the founder of Sigma Nutrition, a company providing educational media content on evidence-based nutrition. Of this content, Danny is perhaps most well-known for being the host of the top-ranked podcast, Sigma Nutrition Radio.
Danny has a MSc. in nutritional sciences from University College Cork, in addition to an undergraduate degree in biology and physics. Danny has worked as a nutrition practitioner for several years, working with a range of athletes. He is the author of “The Sigma Weight Cutting System for MMA & Boxing”, a book that details an evidence-based approach to combat sports nutrition and making weight. He has presented internationally at conferences and seminars in Europe, the UK, Australia and the United States.

    38+: The next evolution begins
