  • Why you should implement some form of barefoot training

In this five minute fitness tips episode, I discuss the benefits of implementing some form of barefoot training.

I also speak about one of my favourite exercises for developing stability in the feet and the hips, which transfers to better joint alignment, improves strength potential, and leads to better muscle activation, recruitment patterns, athleticism, and reduced injuries caused from muscular imbalances and dysfunction through the kinetic chain - The Hip Airplane.

  • Luke Leaman of Muscle Nerds

Luke is a heavyweight in the fitness industry, and has definitely played a part in my development as a coach. I attended his Muscle Nerds foundations course a couple of years ago in Singapore, and anyone who has been listening to the podcast for a while knows that I say often "A healthy organism is an adaptable organism."

Luke's philosophy around training for health first, and utilising basic health markers like blood pressure, waking heart rate, and heart rate variability, has had a significant impact on my coaching and training philosophy over the last few years, and led me down a path of personal and professional growth, as well as tied in a lot of principles and philosophies I had already been using in my career.

This is an incredible conversation for those just wanting to understand what we are thinking about as coaches, but also extremely valuable content for coaches within the industry, to learn from someone who has been in the game since long before the internet became the go-to source of information.

Strap in, grab a notepad and pen, and enjoy the conversation.

  • This stopped me in my tracks...

This was supposed to be one of my 5 minute fitness tips episode...but...I received a testimonial from a friend and client that stopped me in my tracks, and I wanted to share it with my audience.

I also want to express gratitude to every single one of you who listen to the podcast, and share it with your friends and family.

I've recently surpassed 20,000 downloads, which is a significant milestone for me, and keeps the fire burning to continue producing content that hopefully has a positive impact on those who tune in.

  • Heston Russell of Voice Of A Veteran

Heston Russell is a retired Special Forces Major and the Founder of Voice Of A Veteran.

In this conversation, we discuss the ramifications of the recent release of the Brereton report in Australia, and how that is affecting not only the Special Forces community, but the wider population. Heston opens up about the struggles he has faced since discharging from the Army, including starting a new business venture, trying to find his purpose in a foreign civilian environment, thoughts of taking his own life, the people that he draws inspiration from, and his new-found purpose of being a spokesperson for the Veteran community in Australia.

First joining the Australian Army at 17 via the Australian Defence Force Academy, Heston completed Special Forces selection and training to become a Qualified Commando Officer within the 2nd Commando Regiment, Special Operations Command – Australia.

In 2016, Heston was promoted to Major and appointed Officer Commanding the Special Forces Selection and Training continuum at the Special Forces Training Centre.

Launching VOAV in 2020 as a platform for modern veterans to speak out, he is on a mission to break down the stigmas surrounding mental health and vulnerability within the veteran community.

Heston believes each and every one of us has the ability to do whatever is needed to act with an authentic purpose empowered by responsibility – not entitlement – to ensure no one ever feels alone.

  • The force/velocity curve

Understanding the force/velocity curve is essential for smart and efficient programming for pro athletes, as well as a great tool to be applied at the appropriate times with general population clients.

@merciles_66_ competes with @onechampionship and is a National level wrestler from Dagestan.

He is already strong AF, so I don't need to spend much time working on his strength, however, if I want to build a more explosive athlete, I need to focus on his ability to apply his strength rapidly, through the other strength profiles on the force/velocity curve.

    Strength
    Strength - speed
    Power
    Speed - strength
    Speed

I unfortunately didn't catch any of his speed work on camera today, but we started our session with speed work on the stairs, before transitioning into a giant set focused on the other strength profiles. I wanted to keep his speed work separate, as this work is the primary focus for this training block. Due to his already crazy amounts of strength, simply improving his speed (his ability to apply that strength rapidly) will make him a more explosive athlete, which will carry over into his combat focused skills and drills.

Exercise 1: Heavy farmers carry (strength)
Exercise 2: Counter movement box jumps (speed - strength)
Exercise 3: Heavy sled pulls (strength - speed)
Exercise 4: Stepping overhead ball slams (power)

  • Coaches Corner: How do I push past a strength plateau, and what is the difference between slow and fast twitch muscle fibres?

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that."

...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about.

Join me for the third installment of a conversation I had with Will Foden, as we answer questions that have come in from listeners and followers.

    1. How do I push through a strength plateau?

    2. What is the difference between fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibres?

Please note that the original conversation went for about 100 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/ have been dropped as separate episodes.

  • Training tips as we age

"Wait until you're my age, you'll understand what I'm talking about."

Everyone has heard this uttered to them by many different people, multiple times over the years. I can't recall how many times I've heard this...yet, I'm the one saying it now.

As we age, our body simply can't handle the same abuse it was capable of when we were younger. Well actually, it can...it just takes it's toll a lot faster, and requires a lot more time, energy and resources to recover from.

In this episode of my 5 minute fitness tips, I discuss some of my top tips for training after 30, which include:
    - Spend more time preparing for hard training
    - Prioritise recovery mechanisms
    - Conduct maintenance work
    - Undulate training intensity and volume
    - Schedule in deloads

  • James Power interview

James is Ireland's youngest ever professional boxer, with a record of 5 - 0, with 4 knockouts.

During this conversation, we discuss his journey to join the Tiger Muay Thai fight team, including the quarantine period he is currently undergoing to get into the Kingdom of Thailand.

We touch on a number of topics, including:
    - The decision to leave Ireland to make his way to Thailand to join our fight team
    - The journey from the amateur to professional ranks
    - The mindset, attitude and discipline that he has adopted since taking up boxing at the age of 9 years old
    - How he deals with the business side of the sport
    - How he responds to the inevitable number of haters that sprout up whenever you dedicate yourself to reaching the pinnacle of your chosen path

This is a great conversation with a young guy who is hungry to become the best he can possibly be, whilst also keeping himself grounded and humble along that path to greatness.
