Live Train Perform episodes

  • Is eating for health, and eating for performance the same thing?

In my line of work, I often see people taking training and dieting to the extremes. And whilst there is a time and place for that, it shouldn't be the norm.

So, how do we bridge the gap between eating and training for health, as opposed to optimal performance?

This is a soundbite from an interview I conducted with Danny Lennon of Sigma Nutrition, with the full episode live on Monday.

Shaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life.

"I shouldn’t be in the position I am right now."

The odds were stacked against me:

    ●       Poor family on welfare, eldest of 6 kids, parents didn’t work, abusive step-dad, no electricity or running water for a 6 years period of my life

    ●       Caught up with the wrong crowd, stealing, drugs, skipping school

    ●       At 14 years old, I sat on a bus for 3 days with $50 in my pocket, to travel to the next State over West, to begin a new life in the workforce - 2000

14 - 20: I grew up and learned how to become a man through work and rugby
20 - 26: I lived, trained and fought as a professional soldier, at a high level
26 - 32: I became a personal trainer, after failing in my pursuit to become a firefighter
32 - 38: I worked with, and won world titles with some of the best athletes on the planet, as their strength and conditioning coach

  • Paul Minter of Head-Up Charity

I was introduced to Paul of Head-Up Charity by my mate Simon Moloney, who featured on the podcast recently, and told his story of being shot through the throat whilst out on task as sniper in Afghanistan, and was subsequently awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by Her Majesty The Queen.
Si is one of the co-founders of the mental health charity operating out of the UK. The original founder however, has an incredible story of his own that has kick-started the movement in the UK, and is looking to tie in with the team at Swiss 8 to build a quality collaboration that will change the face of mental health across the world.

Paul is a veteran of numerous deployments to Afghanistan, and has battled his own demons, as have a lot of veterans fighting in wars overseas, and in this episode, Paul generously shares some tragic personal and professional circumstances that the majority of people will never face in their entire life.
We go into some dark corners of the mind that soldiers fighting on the front-line face everyday, and discuss many topics in this intriguing, but emotional, conversation.

Paul and I also share some of the most valuable lessons and tools we have learned over the years to manage the mind, and allow us to re-integrate back into the civilian population, which has proved over the years to be an extremely difficult process that unfortunately some people can't adapt to, and see no other way out than to take their own lives.

    THIS CONVERSATION IS FUCKING HEAVY.

  • Examples of progressive overload

Everyone knows exercise is good for us, and increases mental and physical health and longevity...but how much is too much?

    Well, that depends!

Every single person is going to be different, and needs to make adjustments to their own training, nutrition and lifestyle, to get the most out of the time, energy and effort they are putting in.

Everyone has hit a heavy legs session that has crippled them for days, and it hurts to walk up stairs or sit on the toilet...that's a sure sign that you've done too much.
If we train way beyond our capabilities, we spend all of our energy trying to repair and recover the systems that were damaged through training.

Everyone also knows that person that goes to the gym, and does the same workout, week in week out, month in month out, over the course of a year, and doesn't look any different.
If we don't train slightly beyond our capabilities, we spend a lot of time, energy and effort in going to the gym, but don't yield the results we want.

This is where progressive overload comes into play. Doing just enough (but not too much) at the gym to elicit the response that you desire is critical to making gainz. Put simply, this means that as the body adapts to what you do, you make your workouts slightly more challenging. Rinse and repeat.

Most people just look at lifting heavier (guys I'm looking at you) or moving through the same workout faster, or getting more done in the same amount of time (girls I'm looking at you).
And whilst these techniques can have some benefit, these tools become stale very quickly, and if you don't have any other tools in the toolbox, this leads to long plateaus, and plenty of frustration.

In today's episode, I speak about the many tools of progressive overload I have in my toolbox, and provide specific examples on how to use them, that can consistently add up to improved performance and efficiency over long periods of time, when used correctly.

  • Andrew Pap

Andrew "Pap" Papadopoulos is a fitness industry leader, having built, featured in, and developed a number of businesses utilising some of the tools learned during a stint in the Australian Army.

His desire to pursue exploring the limits of his capabilities has pushed him in many different directions, including featuring in a TV series called "Search for hurt", which became a platform for him to build his name, his brand and his businesses within the fitness industry.

Pap has worn, and does wear, a lot of different hats, and is continuing to build his fitness empire  by inspiring others to live their best life through his Everyday Three. Six. Five. Program.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable conversation with a down to earth guy, who is at the top of his game, with plenty of lessons, great words of advice, and actionable takeaways for my audience.

  • Swiss 8

Swiss 8 is a proactive mental health model designed to provide the tools required to deliver high-quality content around their 8 pillars of health and wellness, to allow you to be "Better At Life."

These principles are delivered straight to your phone, via the Swiss 8 app, where you can build out your daily routine via the in-built calendar.

    - Sleep
    - Nutrition
    - Time management
    - Discipline
    - Fitness/Movement
    - Personal growth
    - Mindfulness
    - Minimalism

In this episode, I chat with the brains behind the organisation, Adrian and Mex.
We cover a lot of ground during this conversation, but a big point that came up for me repeatedly, was accountability, and principles. Simply put, taking ownership of your current circumstances, reviewing what is working for you in your life, what is not, and then making a decision to create change by implementing the principles of their 8 pillars of health and wellness, progressively over time, using the right dosage each tool, and tweaking them to suit what is most important in your life at the time, without dropping the ball in the other areas that have moved down the  hierarchy of value.

I've been an ambassador for Swiss 8 for a number of years, and I would never put my name to anything I don't believe in, or use myself.

The Western world is in the middle of a mental health crisis, and our veterans have taken action. Swiss 8’s team of combat veterans have built a proactive mental health program that is delivered through a mobile app. The app offers users programs in 8 categories of health and lifestyle; all proven to reduce anxiety and depression. This holistic model forms your daily routine, aiding you to build structure, improve discipline and take ownership of your life. Once habits are formed the app will teach you new skills. Skills that can form identity, purpose, and encourage physical interaction to rebuild tribe and reduce isolation.

  • "You and your health have to come first, because it ripples into every other area of your life" - with Simon Hall of Nourish Life Group

"Real change starts within. If we want something outside of us to change; be it in life, business, income, health, love...we must first look inwards and change there first." - Simon Hall

Simon is a self-confessed Life Enthusiast, Entrepreneur, Human Guinea Pig, Speaker, World Adventurer, Writer and Podcaster.

I met Simon about two years ago at Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand, whilst he was going through a transitional phase of his life.

From the rigors of pursuing an Olympic games appearance in gymnastics, to being part of a successful team breaking into the fitness industry, the rise and fall of the businessman and his personal life, the journey to figuring out who he wanted to be, and the direction he needed to move in to drive him closer to his goals...this episode covers a lot of bases.

The big point that we continue returning to throughout the entirety of the conversation however, is finding purpose through clarifying values.

There are plenty of thought provoking moments, and actionable takeaways in this conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

  • Factfulness

Factfulness: The stress-reducing habit of only carrying opinions for which you have strong supporting facts.

When asked simple questions about global trends - why the world's population is increasing; how many young women go to school; how many of us live in poverty - we systematically get the answers wrong. So wrong that a chimpanzee choosing answers at random will consistently outguess journalists, Nobel laureates, and investment bankers.

In Factfulness, Professor of International Health and a man who can make data sing, Hans Rosling, together with his two long-time collaborators Anna and Ola, offers a radical new explanation of why this happens, and reveals the ten instincts that distort our perspective.

It turns out that the world, for all its imperfections, is in a much better state than we might think. But when we worry about everything all the time instead of embracing a worldview based on facts, we can lose our ability to focus on the things that threaten us most.

Inspiring and revelatory, filled with lively anecdotes and moving stories, Factfulness is an urgent and essential book that will change the way you see the world.

  • Simon Moloney CGC (Conspicuous Gallantry Cross)

"I knew exactly who had shot me. That fucker got the drop on me. I could feel the bullet hole, and I was bleeding heavily. Shot through the throat...I know what that means. I've only got a few minutes left. I'm going to take out as many of them as I can, and go out with a bang." - @mo1089

I have some amazing guests lined up for the Live Train Perform podcast, one of those being this legend, whom I met at @tigermuaythai a couple of years ago.

Simon Moloney was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by Her Majesty The Queen for his actions on the battlefield as a sniper in Afghanistan with the British Military.

    In this episode, we discuss:
    - What went down on that day
    - The journey and training he undertook to lead him up to these life defining moments
    - The similarities and differences we each went through training to become snipers
    - The challenges he's faced, as well as the triumphs achieved since transitioning back to civvie street

Be prepared for some dark humour, too much swearing, and previously untold stories.

    38+: The next evolution begins
