  • 233: Our Calvin The Coonhound Battles Cancer

A Special Holiday Part II Podcast for Calvin The Coonhound Beating Cancer:

Tune in for a special holiday podcast catching you up on our ailing Calvin The Coonhound. Calvin is our English Redtick Coonhound, 10 years old, battled Cancer, became a tripod, and now has been battling partial renal failure from the tripod leg amputation surgery to save his life from Cancer. Listen in for my transparency and updates into our personal lives and love for Calvin.

On This Episode You Will Hear:

    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction. This is a special edition, I decided that with the power of Thanksgiving here in the USA, I'd thought I'd break up our normal content and add in a couple of solo episodes, which are very few and far between on this show since founding in September 2016.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="00:53"] For the past eight years I've had the honor and privileged to be able to go up to the Harlem in northern New York City and there's a strong population of less fortunate people. There's a wonderful woman there by the name of Mary Lanning and she helps give back for the past 47 years making 2000+ meals, which this year we did 2500 hot meals going to the streets to give back. Go listen to that episode 232 to learn a little bit more. There was another powerful organization we got to work with on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, which was the Tunnel 2 Towers program. That's an amazing organization giving back to people whether it be military, police, fire, first founders, etc. This whole program was started thanks to the Stephen Siller Foundation, which was named after a New York City fallen firefighter who died in the 911 World Trade Center Towers collapse. So again, check out Episode 232.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="02:35"] I think we should be good to our fellow man, no matter what day or week or month it is. But this episode is especially targeted to a very special member of our family, Calvin The Coonhound. That's my dog, and not just my dog, it's actually my fiancé’s dog. It was really her dog for five years before I met her and then the past five years that we've been building our relationship together. Obviously Calvin became, we’ll call it my son, as well, since we don't have human children. Calvin is our child. I never would have called him that until the tragic experiences that we've been going through this past month.
    •

    • I wanted to do a podcast to reflect on that because I think I underestimate sometimes the impact of people, individuals and yes, even animals on our lives. That's what I wanted this episode to really do for you all, was to get you guys to pause and reflect. So I thought what the heck let me share some personal components out of my life for you all because isn't that what podcasting is all about?! We should be getting more intimate, I should be letting you guys deeper into my life. I mean, over the past 200+ shows, I know I've definitely softened things up and let you guys in on my little romantic adventures and how basically my head was up by butt as I was fighting to fall in love with my now fiancé. So for those of you haven't followed on social media, Calvin has not been having a good go the past couple months.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="04:46"] For the past few years he's been an amazing companion I loved taking him mountain biking and Kristen my fiancé was worried that as he was getting older, I might be overworking him. I ride pretty fast as a mountain biker, I've done a few races over the years, I don't like to go slow. So Calvin likes to run with me and he's happy to get after it with me so that's why he and I have our own special bond which is different than hers, ha-ha!
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="05:38"] She took him to the park couple of months ago where he loves to be typical Calvin, he sprints across one of the baseball fields or soccer fields and he does this weird dipping of his shoulder and then just slides into the grass. Then he rolls over and just likes to rub his hair in the grass, it's a dog thing. I sometimes I feel like as human beings we should take a page from their book and learn how simple life can be for happiness. So maybe next time its wintertime maybe when you're in the snow, drop that shoulder and just roll around through the snow.
    •

    • Anyway, he goes to do this and all of a sudden Kristen said he just let out this god awful YELP and did not want to get up. He's a pretty tough dude. Now granted he's as we're recording this here in November 2018, a 10-year-old dog. So if this whole math in dog years is accurate, that is 70-years-old, supposedly it's a seven to one ratio. So she was worried because he's a 90-95 pound Coonhound and granted my fiancé does a lot of CrossFit, we lift a lot of weights and she's a strong girl, but she was wasn't if she was able to get them back to the car.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="08:27"] So yes, ladies and gentlemen, Calvin The Coonhound has Cancer. So this was a huge shock to us. I love to try and maintain that high energy, glass is half full. My fiancé, being the educated doctor, she is a bit of a realist. I guess you reach a point where you know too much and it's really hard for her to battle that and fight the fact that it could be this bad. So she can't stop thinking about that. Let me tell you the past month and a half, I was getting frustrated. My patience was pushed to the limits, at times, I had to catch myself, I thought I was being a little bit of a dick.
    •

    • I just know too much just like she knows too much from the medical world. I know too much from the natural wellness, healthy energy, the Psychology front, etc. I'm just pushing her to understand that Calvin needs us to be 100% positive. I know things don't look good. When people are not doing well it doesn't pay to hang around them and then be the woe is me companion. Sorry guys, this is not how I roll, so I took this full speed ahead for Calvin. I don't know if it helped him or not but obviously the Cancer was real.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="12:16"] We can always make more money, that's a little business life lesson. If you're looking for something else that will give you an excuse to work hard for your clients or for your customers, go spend the money because you're going to want to get after it! So anyway, $3000 already invested into that orthoscopic and biopsy, we were going stay committed.
    •

    • Calvin loves us, he gets fed better than I do sometimes. I pass him my grass fed steak. He's more important, as our child, so anyway, let's fast forward. We got labs coming back, we're stressed out, and he's on pain relievers now. I know those are not good for him. I'm anti-pharmaceutical, I'm anti-drug, we were trying herbal remedies too, and pain relieving oils just to try to cut back on any drugs. We tried it all man I mean, this is a major commitment.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="14:08"] We finally get the test back it does confirm that this cancer did not metastasize. We can move forward with amputation so the game plan is set and the only day they can give us that works as soon as possible is the day that Kristen is flying out of town to Kentucky for a Horse Event. So she was not looking forward to that.I take the day off from any business activities, I didn't care, it was all about Calvin that day and back to lifestyle balance. Sometimes you got to unplug man, just focus on what matters. They took the leg, the shoulder, the scapula, everything, to make sure there's no chance of any Cancer left behind. All to make him into a true tripod pup.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="15:27"] Fast forward to this recording time, he's hobbling around like crazy but before I go full Fast Forward, he started having more problems. That's right, I think we're upwards of over $4000 now, probably closer to five, and that's right, dollars US. Between the pharmaceuticals, the pain treatments, the IV treatments, the surgery, the earlier orthoscopic procedure, Calvin's health has us committed.
    •

    • We see this weird discoloration proceeding from the front of his body to the back of his body, down to his hind leg. We find out we should probably bring him back in and get some blood work done. Well sure enough now we've got renal failure on the list! So for those of you who don't understand renal failure, renal relates to your urinary system, your bladder, and in this case, your kidneys. This is the system that helps remove toxins from the body. We tied this new issue to the pharmaceuticals, we just think he was getting too much due to all of his procedures.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="17:27"] I mean this is this is getting deep, Kristen's not doing well. Her stress, her emotion is manifesting into me. I am I'm doing my best guys, I'm trying to stay positive. I'm trying to stay ahead of the front and you know I talked about on the show about how your mindset is everything. Life's challenges are meant to test you, well let me tell you this test was blowing me away and I was not ready for it.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="18:07"] We pull out all the stops again. We started running IV treatments to hydrate him and help get fluids to start flushing the urinary and kidney system. We were just trying to help kick start the kidneys, hoping to reverse the supposedly irreversible renal failure. So now at that point it's still not looking good. We do an update of blood panel, we get him back to the surgical center for the next two days. Running those IV’s with full 24-hour monitoring and updated blood work again.
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="19:44"] Our new game plan, we're doing IV’s a couple times a day and he's going to be peeing his butt off but we got to help flush his system. We also try to see if this is going to help with us switching out and reducing his medications.
    •

    • So let's fast forward to Thanksgiving. I'll just sum up, the blood work is reversing, it is slowly starting to climb and improve. It's not perfect yet, he's showing more energy, he's going outside on his own. I’ve also built him his own handmade ramp, it's in my Instagram history @scottwmulvaney. I literally built a massive wooden ramp with special carpet tiles and anti-skid taping on it. So now when you walk out the back of our house there's no human steps, there's a ramp to help him get into the yard. That's right, I'm handy!
    •

    • [spp-timestamp time="21:26"] Let me sum up the financials. I believe we're at a maximum of money invested in Calvin #, I think we're at a new grand total of $8000. That's right, count it, 8000 US dollars! I still can't fathom that guys.
    •

    • Part of that was a donation to the surgeon’s favorite zoo. The surgeon who did the procedure, this is the power of amazing people ladies and gentlemen, he does not like charging his fellow veterinary doctors for their own loved animals. So if he's working on a major procedure like ours which should have cost us a hell of a lot more, he preferred to donate his time. That was a three hour procedure and he did not charge us, so we only paid for that day which was the veterinary facility. A shout out to Dr. Guy DeNardo and PennRidge Veterinary in Perkasie, PA!

  • 232: Wishing a Happy Thanksgiving & NY Charities
A Happy Thanksgiving Charities Themed Podcast Today:

Happy Thanksgiving and a whole lot of charity work on this cold and thankful holiday in New York. Your host, Scott, shares this year's charities and support messages to be thankful this season. Special shoutouts to Tunnel 2 Towers with the Stephen Siller Foundation.

Another shoutout to Mary Lanning of her Yes! Solutions in NYC and the many years of serving hot meals to the streets of Harlem with the StreetCorner Gourmets. Stay tuned for a follow-up episode with Brian Strauser of the Strauser Project when we dig deeper into our Staten Island experiences before attending this year's all-nighter creating over 2000 hot meals with the StreetCorner Gourmets family.

Facebook LIVE From New York City:

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:15"] Beards and No Shave November vs Movember.
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:45"] In the USA, we have Thanksgiving. So about eight years ago, I stumbled across a wonderful woman by the name of Mary landing in New York City. This was after my first year of firefighting after I left the corporate space.
    • [spp-timestamp time="03:06"] StreetCorner Gourmets has been going on for 47 years. I just finished my fire season, she loved hearing that story. I said, I'll be back and give me your contact information. I'm going to come up and I'm gonna volunteer with you, your family, and these people you gather every year to create such a powerful impact.
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:35"] 2000 meals made from scratch, Thanksgiving meals that we create in a commercial kitchen with volunteer work, then taken to the streets, and we serve them hot on the street Thanksgiving morning.
    • [spp-timestamp time="06:12"] Shoutout to Brian Strauser of the Strauser Project, he's been on the show a couple times over the years. He was inspired to join me this year. Another tradition I'm going to throw in here for you guys is we also attempt to do a mountain bike ride every Thanksgiving day morning.
    • [spp-timestamp time="07:00"] Sleep deprivation is not healthy for us.
    • [spp-timestamp time="07:59"] I got changed in the parking lot, freezing my butt off. This annual ride is called the Jaeger ride. It is inspired by Jaegermeister, the liquor, if you choose not to drink, it's okay.
    • [spp-timestamp time="08:53"] Brian had his own powerful event that we're going to bring up on another one of our upcoming shows. A powerful organization out of New York ever since 911, and the loss of the twin towers. Thousands of people and thousands of first responders who had died, triggered an organization that rose from the ashes, The Stephen Siller Foundation
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:46"] Stephen Siller Foundation stepped up. Their tagline is the Tunnel 2 Towers organization and it's a story of Stephen Siller, a fallen FDNY member who was off duty the day of 911. He tried getting to the tower, grabbed 70 pounds of gear, his clothing, his equipment, ran from the tunnel to the towers.
    • [spp-timestamp time="11:10"] Stephen Sillers Foundation steps up, who is Stephen from 9/11?
    • [spp-timestamp time="13:40"] A cold Thanksgiving in 2018, that we have a lot to be thankful for. In the end, what is the purpose behind all of that what are you doing, to drive all of that.
    • [spp-timestamp time="14:20"] Final Words

  • 231: Inspiring Your Superior Self, Baltimore, and Blue Collar Life
Baltimore Resident, Blue Collar Influencer, Inspiring Your Superior Self:

Host of Your Superior Self, Trey Downes is a thirty-something-year-old dad of three living in the suburbs of Baltimore, MD. His wife, Marisa, is a labor and delivery nurse and together they are striving, like most working-class families, to find happiness and balance.

Growing up in a small town in Delaware, Trey recounted the working-class culture cycle: You are a union worker for the same company your father worked for and your grandfather worked for before him. You clock in and out for 30 years, going through the motions until you retire.

Trey discovered that he was in the majority among his peers and launched YYS with a mission to break that cycle, successfully cultivating an inspirational community for people looking for a path to self-growth. The concept behind YSS pays tribute to Trey’s favorite author, Ernest Hemingway, and his infamous quote:

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow men.

True nobility lies in being superior to your former self.”

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="03:00"] Hardcore History with Dan Carlin.
    • [spp-timestamp time="08:40"] Does today's generation have that type of commitment? It's always what is owed to me.
    • [spp-timestamp time="12:25"] Airwalk shoes and Jnco jeans.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:30"] Wrestlers, the Briscoe Brothers
    • [spp-timestamp time="19:31"] I am trying to reach like the blue collar workers, the blue collar entrepreneurs.
    • [spp-timestamp time="24:47"] Reading physics book as a blue collar guy. He's on the treadmill right now. He's on cruise control. I'm like, Look, man, we are the creators of our own success. Wake up to it.
    • [spp-timestamp time="33:15"] I think people don't understand the power of getting a properly tailored dress shirt.
    • [spp-timestamp time="35:48"] Quote, Live Life To The Fullest by Ernest Hemingway. I actually want to know what is the moment in his life that inspired that quote.
    • [spp-timestamp time="42:44"] If I could do this, I can do anything.
    • [spp-timestamp time="46:08"] So what was your breaking point? What was your Ernest Hemingway moment? What was your reasoning for saying, you know what I'm done?
    • [spp-timestamp time="54:07"] That's the goal, right? To build ourselves into person that we want to be on any day, we could fall back any day. But you have to keep the strength inside of you, you have to keep the passion. You have to keep the disciplines that you do every day to keep pushing you and building yourself into that role that you want to be in or that person that you want to be.
    • [spp-timestamp time="57:34"] That helps you understand a little more about how I set out balance in my life. I didn't know these things, back to your point, right? I had to put in all these different reps.
    • [spp-timestamp time="59:50"] Dog walkers making $100,000 per year, blue collar?!
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:06:07"] 30 more years? 25 more years? A freakin retirement clock on my phone that lets you know what I'm gonna retire like, Are you kidding me?
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:15:15"] Final Words

    Final Words:

I want to say to you the listener, that it doesn't matter what it is that you're thinking about right now, whether it's business or personal fitness, or investing or being a father or spouse, all it takes is one action one step into that direction.

Opportunities will open up that you never thought that maybe might have been there. Like, for me, it was I didn't think that was would be a podcaster, I had a dream that I wanted to make a difference in the world. I wanted to voice my opinions about self growth and self betterment. I just took one step, I went to Google and YouTube, searched how to be a podcaster and I learned how to put a show together and a website and now I'm over here talking to Scott getting after it about self betterment, self growth.

So don't be afraid to take that step and don't hesitate because the more time that you take, the less opportunity to get better or faster it's you know, you're you're losing time and I the biggest regret that I have is is not starting sooner so that's that's pretty much it man like just get after it.

The best marketer wins every time.

A lot of the time we focus on delivery a great product or a great service, and that's awesome! That's a customer retention tool. Before we think about customer retention, we have to think about customer acquisition. People only know how good you are once they've bought from you. Before they have bought from you, they only know how good your marketing is.

So the best marketer wins, every time. Resolve to become a great marketer.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:56"] The struggle is real, and the entrepreneurial spirit people.
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:35"] Shout out to rob a SYR CrossFit.
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:54"] Scott’s four-legged family which is becoming a three legged family member. So shout out to Calvin The Coonhound in surgery recovery today. He finished his surgery last night, has become a tripod so I wasn't sure what your thoughts were around that because we're going to kind of tie this into the show here about injury and athletic recovery.
    • [spp-timestamp time="03:00"] Shoutout to Penn Ridge Veterinary Hospital because that's the ones who are helping save Calvin’s life. So quick backstory. Calvin is our English Red Tick Coonhound and he's 10 years old. In June he started getting a limp and we were surprised because we actually she made me stop taking him mountain biking with me.
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:45"] Fast forward the lab work we find out is Cancer that ate away at the cartilage in his elbow. That's why he was in so much pain. We did all the lab work we figured out okay the cancer is not spreading did not metastasize. We'd have to take the leg off because he's in so much pain. We took the entire right leg off, the shoulder, scapula, everything.
    • [spp-timestamp time="07:20"] We have that executive functioning component to our thought where we're able to have that sequential reasoning and abstract thinking. If there was an injury that was to the extent of losing a limb or something, that impactful, we can think ahead, know what our lives are going to be like.
    • [spp-timestamp time="08:01"] There's also that psychological process of rehab. We remember how strong we used to be, or how it used to be before, but now, we're starting here.
    • [spp-timestamp time="09:12"] I feel it's probably different for everybody. It's harder to look at where you're at today, whether it's the circumstances, the condition of an injury or something like that, or other elements of your life.I think Andy Bernard says it best, I'm a huge office fan, but he says when I was here at Dunder Mifflin, I kept wishing that I was back in Stanford. And then when I was here, I kept wishing I was there, you know, I wish there was a way that we could realize we're in the good old days when we're there. Sometimes we can have a little bit of glorification of the memories where we were right up all the positive.
    • [spp-timestamp time="13:29"] Maybe it's like a culture shock thing might be right. I think through the self-development in the professional development after that transition helped me/us because you realize, okay, are you over-glorifying it to celebrate those experiences.
    • [spp-timestamp time="16:28"] Two individuals that climbed it with him throughout his rehab process, he just kept saying, I'm doing it, I'm doing it. We didn't have the heart to tell him. You can't tell someone in that condition.
    • [spp-timestamp time="19:26"] We're probably also supposed to struggle through that process. Yes, that's where you learn. I tell people in the entrepreneurial space, right, like you're supposed to make mistakes. That's how you learn some of the most powerful things you can carry into your future. Because now they're hard-coded in your brain because they were painful and you're not gonna forget them. If I was able to get through that surgery, or if I was able to get through that injury, and I was able to do that I can handle this, you know, so it can, it can really help shape us, but also give us confidence in a way going forward. So those who make it through those struggles comes with great growth.
    • [spp-timestamp time="21:53"] The trials and tribulations, the bouncing back, the mindset from an injury, I think reflecting on lessons learned. I think a lot of us skip over these lessons that we're supposed to be learning.
    • [spp-timestamp time="22:58"] The culture of their sport where it really is, you push through like it, that's just the culture of the sport that they play. So I think that there's definitely to a point there's a cultural influence.
    • [spp-timestamp time="24:10"] Turns out that I had dislocate a rib in my back, in reality you can displace the cartilage apparently. So if you're trying to breathe and your rib cage goes to expand, mine was held back from doing that. So every time I tried to breathe, the cartilage was shifted. So I had to have a chiropractor fix all this.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:59"] They just feel like they have to push through the pain. I didn't know, if I was able to play with a dislocated shoulder.
    • [spp-timestamp time="26:25"] I'm letting my body recover. Maybe I'll change it up. Maybe instead of going to the CrossFit gym, I'm going to go and maybe do some yoga or do some mobility work or do something else.
    • [spp-timestamp time="31:42"] Making sure the framed and signed “The Rock” artwork would properly go with the décor.
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:00:00"] Final Words

I kept wishing I was there, I wish there was a way that we could realize, we're in the good old days when we're there. - Quote: Andy Bernard (The Office)

    Final Words:

I think it's just, be in the now. Whether you're talking injury and our previous level of functioning, or what you used to be able to do. What you wish you could do, or what the other person is doing.

It's all about what we're in right now. We could sit here and wish forever that the injury didn't happen or that things went differently, it’s about accepting all of this. This is where we're at right now, even though maybe we wouldn't choose to be here, this is what it is. It is okay and we will be fine. There is that acceptance, whatever that present moment is giving you, we can then do something with it, in a much more efficient and impactful fashion.

  • 228: Dr. Jay’s Carnivore Diet Study & Telomeres
Dr. Anthony Jay Returns To Talk About The Carnivore Diet and His Carnivore Study:

Are you a true Carnivore, are you ready to commit to a 100% Carnivore Study?! Dr. Anthony G. Jay PhD returns for another health podcast episode. He’s definitely a healthy influencer when it comes to DNA, genetic research, and the ability to analyze your 23andMe health data. You can learn about on that from our past podcast episode 177: My 23andMe Supplement Health DNA Analysis with Dr. Anthony Jay.

Dr. Jay has a Ph.D. in biochemistry and he researches stem cells and epigenetics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also the president of the AJ Consulting Company which provides personalized diet, sleep, and training programs based on DNA. Dr. Jay is the author of a bestselling book on artificial estrogen chemicals and is an expert on hormones, fats, and cholesterol. His book is called “Estrogeneration: How Estrogenics Are Making You Fat, Sick, and Infertile.”

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="03:00"] The Glutathione component is a necessary supplement to aid my body in its detoxicification process is that accurate? Yeah for you specifically it's more important than normal. It clears heavy metals and it clears just a lot of different products that you know are toxic like you said and just the fact that your body's not producing as much as it should as much as a normal person based on your DNA.
    • [spp-timestamp time="05:30"] Dr. Jay just got a new on reverse osmosis filter system and stainless steel tank. It's a tankless reverse osmosis which is kind of cool. Most of them have like a plastic storage tank where they keep the water.
    • [spp-timestamp time="11:30"] Something called Carnosine. Actually plants don't make Carnosine. You can't find if you're a pure vegetarian, you're not eating any Carnosine. So let's, let's dive into this right. So we're talking about Carnivore now.
    • [spp-timestamp time="12:15"] I think there's so much science we just don't know you know, most people think that that we were so far along in science we just know everything but I really don't. When you run these mass spectroscopy studies, there's thousands of different compounds. In reality, there's probably thousands of different things we're getting when we're consuming meat and we're consuming them in a balanced form, and not some isolated one substance form and that is supplementation.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:00"] Telomere tests, your telmore age, and carnivore mascot, Dr. Shawn Baker.
    • [spp-timestamp time="16:13"] I respect people's lifestyle choices. I respect their faiths , I don't talk about religion on this show. If you choose a vegan lifestyle because of your love of animals, okay, I get it, but then just make sure you are aware that you better supplement the heck out of that lifestyle because it is not a 100% lifestyle. We are naturally omnivores. Great book, omnivores dilemma is a classic first thing I ever learned about the word on the board from and again, I'm a huge advocate.
    • [spp-timestamp time="17:00"] A lot of people on the Carnivore Diet are super zealous about it too. I think the zealots are difficult because they're not really open to what's good. They're just picking a side and they're sticking to it, no matter what. They don't really care about the logic or the arguments. I mean, you can find that pretty much anywhere, but it seems to be super concentrated in the vegan community, it is not every vegan, but definitely there's a lot of them out there that are really social media trolls.
    • [spp-timestamp time="18:40"] I've become a advocate for moving on from the word diet. Vinnie Tortorich cares a lot about with his whole NSNG Lifestyle. Trademarking his No Sugars No Grains as this not a diet it's a lifestyle. So I'm intrigued that if once you progress through this research, we could finally bring it to the point where this is a lifestyle. Diet, thanks to magazines and bro-science has become a short-term mental thing. The psychology piece here is like guys, we're trying to teach you a sustainable lifestyle. Well, that's the funny thing about this is I'm (Dr. Jay) actually not teaching anybody sustainable lifestyle. I just want it to be a diet for this study.
    • [spp-timestamp time="21:00"] I don't think people need to carry on forever, some people will want to, and it will be beneficial for them. But most importantly, from my perspective, is I want to see some data, you know, I want to see how their telomeres change. That's kind of the foundation of this study, but we're also doing blood work before and after, and then we can translate that into people that really need it. We can say okay, this is a good diet for people or a lifestyle for people that have autoimmune problems. i.e. Anna Vocino the co-host of Fitness Confidential who lives with Celiac Disease. She's the author of the Eat Happy Cookbook.
    • [spp-timestamp time="22:50"] Is it plants or is it possibly the chemicals that could be still within the plant because even in the organic craze, they've now created organically approved herbicides and chemicals to keep bugs off. Everybody thinks organic means chemical free. You have to read the fine print. Our tissue is very similar to other animals. So if we're eating animals, that's not that much different. Plants have a completely different cell wall structure. They've got all these different proteins, just just myriad of different components in our bodies. So the biggest problem is because we all seem to have leaky gut these days. A lot of people punch holes in their guts with these chemicals that you're talking about. And it's called intestinal permeability.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:00"] Your immune system is smart enough to know, hey, I can't. I'm not going to destroy red meat.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:59"] Branched-chain amino acid are like Lego. If you've got a chain of 20 Legos or a hundred Legos, those go through your intestine. Your intestine is supposed to break those down into single Lego blocks. If people are getting leaky gut, these massive chunks of protein are going into your blood. That triggers your immune system.
    • [spp-timestamp time="27:05"] So red meat is very recognizable. It's very similar to your body, the components in red meat are similar to components in your body. It's got protective factors that are concentrated that you don't find in plants. The current research is not for people eating 100% meat. That's what I'm really trying to set up, is I want to answer questions like what happens to your testosterone? What happens to your blood sugar? What happens to your inflammatory markers?
    • [spp-timestamp time="27:05"] Carnosine, it's the protein building block that is naturally produced in the body. It is found in muscles when they are working. It's also found in the heart, brain and many other parts of the body. So, we already have Carnosine present.
    • [spp-timestamp time="30:00"] So advanced glycation end products is when you basically have too much sugar around and it starts sticking to proteins. That causes all kinds of health problems.
    • [spp-timestamp time="35:00"] Coming back to the carnivores diet what I'm setting out to do is have people do 90 days. Before they start it, I want them to be omnivores, and I want them to test their telomeres.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:00"] Scott considers going full Carnivore for this study.
    • [spp-timestamp time="41:15"] The most important thing is you have to take the telomere test before and after. I don't make any money from that company or anything like that.
    • [spp-timestamp time="42:19"] Nobel Price Winnter Elizabeth H. Blackburn.
    • [spp-timestamp time="44:36"] It is a pretty hardcore study. You know, it's not for the faint of heart.
    • [spp-timestamp time="45:17"] The problem with most dietary studies is people are eating all kinds of stuff. Scientists make these conclusions, but they're an inaccurate conclusion. That's the problem with the whole vegetarian diet, all the studies with the vegetarians versus people eating meat, people are eating fish or whatever, it's so messy. Now, some of those people are smoking, they're drinking too. They're doing all kinds of different things that throws all the studies off. It's a nutrition epidemiological study.
    • [spp-timestamp time="48:30"] So people can eat organs on the study. Mountain lions would be excluded because the meat is white, and I would exclude pork because the meat is white. I would exclude birds because the meat is white for the most part just to make it easy for people understand.
    • [spp-timestamp time="54:19"] I personally think the Carnivore Diet is going to be extremely beneficial for people with autoimmune problems or inflammation problems. I can't hundred percent prove that, we don't have the studies, but that's where I see the potential. Who knows, there might be a potential in 10 different areas that we don't even know about right now. Hopefully this study will allow me to get funding to do follow-up studies and in the future we can actually pay people to participate. Things like intensive research like bloodwork. Like for example, I want to test testosterone receptor number.

    Scott's Create Space Domains Breakout:
    • Friendships/Relationships
    • Family/Loved Ones
    • Finance/Money
    • Health/Fitness
    • Spirtuality/Faith
    • Mindset Growth/Education

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="02:12"] Talk about surrounding yourself with powerful influencers.
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:08"] So that's a pain in the butt.
    • [spp-timestamp time="07:30"] We have several personas throughout our journey, and we realized your name doesn't change.
    • [spp-timestamp time="09:17"] You have a new journal coming out soon.
    • [spp-timestamp time="10:20"] I feel like so many of us know what to do. But we don't create the space to actually do it. That's a psychologist in me.
    • [spp-timestamp time="17:33"] We gotta pause on that. Yeah, there's always a way to figure it out, that's a mindset piece, not everybody hearing this has that yet.
    • [spp-timestamp time="18:40"] I had to put it in my calendar, I had to rearrange my priorities. I had to put it in so it had a slot and and then I would do it because I knew once I had a plan I would execute.
    • [spp-timestamp time="22:31"] What I love about the network marketing world, too, is that it could really just be 15 minutes or an hour a day. It doesn't have to be 12 hours a day. It really is just intentional time because they say a 1% shift will take you in a completely new direction and a half an hour a day, 15 minutes a day.
    • [spp-timestamp time="25:30"] So the particular activating system is a part of your brain, that's basically like your filter. We hear and we consume like 70,000 things throughout the day. Well, our brain can't handle all of that. So there's a filter that decides what's most important to you.
    • [spp-timestamp time="27:21"] My mindset was different than where I am today. So things are seen and looked at differently. I do understand manifestation in a more scientific way. So I'm intrigued to see how you would respond to that.
    • [spp-timestamp time="29:54"] I mean, even the Bible talks about the power of the tongue and taking your thoughts captive. There's a lot of things that I'm like, oh, I learned about this in church the whole time. I just never realized it was the same thing.
    • [spp-timestamp time="32:12"] You created space in your life and you physically made a space to have a prayer closet.
    • [spp-timestamp time="33:53"] Denise's seven domains. When I studied psychology, we called them the six or seven domains of life. So I'm intrigued to see how you're going to label these out.
    • [spp-timestamp time="42:24"] I think a lot of times people will tell me that they're striving for balance. You're going to flow in and out.
    • [spp-timestamp time="44:47"] The bodybuilding competition. I've always worked out and I've been interested in that. I feel like that really taught me how to eat because before, I was eating out. So that taught me how to cook nutritious food, eat whole foods and in moderation, still have my treat every once in a while. The habits are so strong now that it's not hard. I'm still drinking like a gallon of water a day.
    • [spp-timestamp time="46:58"] You have your dream life goal, you have affirmations, visualizations connected to that goal, because it goes from our head to our heart. We're not just going to say it but we need to believe it. Then we go into our action items. The dream life action items. What can I do for this goal today, then I added dream relationship action and dream health action.
    • [spp-timestamp time="53:10"] A 1% change will take you somewhere completely different.
    • [spp-timestamp time="54:00"] Final Words

  • 226: The Masculine vs Feminine and The Communication Code
Balancing The Masculine vs Feminine, the Communication Code:

Mary is here to discuss the power of the Communication Code. She is also the author of Conscious Communications for Harnessing The Power of Your Words. She is an expert in personal development but is not a life coach; she’s a businesswoman who discovered a road map of how to get in control of your life. She truly walks her talk by generating pragmatic solutions for people who are freaking out. Mary blends personal experience with her extensive knowledge of neuroscience and human behavior to guide businesses and individuals to defeat the freak-out and create their ideal life.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:48"] We are a walking bottle of water, so to speak, right? 70% of our mass is water. So I've always thought I was a giant watermelon. I ate enough of them as a kid. You were a big watermelon geek?
    • [spp-timestamp time="02:32"] You don't swallow the seeds, or you could choke or die. We were probably perfectly willing to swallow them and drink through drink from water hoses. I actually I used to use them as firepower. We did the whole seed spitting thing. Just load up a whole bunch of them and start spitting.
    • [spp-timestamp time="03:35"] Business communication is totally my claim to fame. I just gave two speeches and Florida at a medical conference on the concept of the Communication Code, which is a business communications strategy that I wrote and have been training on for 15 years.
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:21"] So that's where conscious communication came from. It's basically like 20 years ago, I started with an idea. It was an idea that had the potential to change an industry to revolutionize the collections industry, to the create connections in business that are just strong and impactful.
    • [spp-timestamp time="02:32"] It became the framework that I use to build out the personal development concepts in conscious communications.
    • [spp-timestamp time="05:41"] It was also part of that inner desire that I had, you know, I think that I think the universe works in all kinds of ways. I believe that the book happening the way that it did was exactly how it was supposed to happen, to get my name out there. I had this other desire to get out of my comfort zone and get into the personal development space. It wasn't the foundation of what I was really there to talk about, which was how to build trust and rapport and lasting relationships and communications. Based on my extensive research of neurology, psychology, and neuro chemistry.
    • [spp-timestamp time="08:24"] I said sit down if you love debt, and no one sat down, not one person.
    • [spp-timestamp time="09:40"] We're vulnerable to the information that we're given, and how it’s presented to us, and a million other things. That's where I really got my start, creating these strategies. I mean, it was my own company collecting debt. So 20 years ago, when I started my company, you know, I wanted to be different, I wanted my unique value proposition to be that I was using sales to collect this debt versus threats and intimidation. The sales really failed because of a couple of reasons.
    • [spp-timestamp time="12:49"] I know from the last show this, this wonderful, amazing fiance of yours has been a source of a lot of motivation and growth in your life. The only reason why we're still together is because I finally started embracing vulnerability and softening the tough guy exterior and realizing that being vulnerable does not breed weakness and actually breed strength.
    • [spp-timestamp time="15:00"] I think that we don't need to have this perception of debt in our country, that it's a bad thing. There are plenty of times when debt is an investment. What if my company would be twice or three times the size that it is now if I would have made different investments early on. This was probably almost 20 years ago, where a lot of companies were investing in dialers and a dialer system like an automatic call dialer, an automatic call dialer system was like 100 grand.
    • [spp-timestamp time="18:18"] I remember giving you a huge green light. And I remember even after we got off the show talking for another 20 minutes or so.
    • [spp-timestamp time="19:16"] Oh, yeah. Tell me the hack, because I'll maybe I'll steal it. otter.ai It's an artificial intelligence app that voice transcribes.
    • [spp-timestamp time="21:55"] The do not say words need to be read. So you're saying that they can't just be written down? They need to be spoken? Right. Well spoken. So the list of words that we never say are no, not, won't, however, and unfortunately.
    • [spp-timestamp time="23:16"] The strategy that I developed is, is most frequently and easiest to use, and in business communications, however, is typically going to indicate some kind of bad news. It triggers your fight or flight and it prepares you for an argument, you know, it puts you on the defensive.
    • [spp-timestamp time="26:55"] I was doing more analytics methods and procedures, analysis and stuff like that as an analyst. But the years prior to that being on the front line coaching, developing, etc. These are the words that when you start hearing them, get ready to follow the process flow to get them to the save queue, as they are on their way out. If you can't save them as a regular customer service rep, it was still your responsibility to try.
    • [spp-timestamp time="27:41"] Every time they would use that word, what's happening in the body of the consumer is they're gearing up for a fight. Now there are certain words also. So rule number two is you want to replace those negative words with words that actually work to build a connection with the consumer. So just like there are words that trigger the fight or flight, there are also words that build confidence and trigger the opposite system. They trigger the parasympathetic.
    • [spp-timestamp time="29:22"] It's cheaper to save a customer than to market and sell and acquire a new one. I wish Verizon Wireless knew that.

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EDhdAHrOg]

    • [spp-timestamp time="29:52"] A full one week immersion, to learn how to behaviorally analyze and behaviorally coach people. You're not just managing them, okay, you need to understand communication and emotion. This is just from one on one from a coach to an employee.
    • [spp-timestamp time="30:35"] You want to replace those words with words that actually work to build a connection with the consumer. So like, for example, what if every time you wanted to say, unfortunately, you just instead said fortunately.
    • She made $4,000 from one email, because when she pushed herself to eliminate the word, unfortunately, her brain was forced to come up with a solution to the problem too.
    • [spp-timestamp time="31:56"] Sometimes in customer service, you get that one person on the phone, who without a doubt, you know, this is the person who can handle your business.
    • [spp-timestamp time="34:34"] I'm asking for permission, I'm giving them some power to thing you give the person a little bit of power.
    • [spp-timestamp time="35:56"] This is the magical part of the code. You have to validate what the consumers say to you. Validation is the most powerful part of building the connection. We have a set of human needs. One of our basic human needs is the need to be heard.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:20"] She can even consider getting the nail out of the head. What she needs is to be heard, because the moment that he even forced himself rolling his eyes to say, Oh, that must be hard. You know, he's faking it.
    • [spp-timestamp time="44:13"] All of those words in the subconscious mind plant a seed of a negative outcome, I am not going to get what I want with this person.
    • [spp-timestamp time="47:01"] When someone sees the power of conditioned responses when I learned that it was very awakening to me because see what the reason I became number one was because I would say let's go ahead and get you signed up today. Okay, and then the person just automatically says okay.
    • [spp-timestamp time="50:25"] A classic, how to win friends and influence people.
    • [spp-timestamp time="53:37"] The psychological burden that debt creates on the consumer side.
    • [spp-timestamp time="55:55"] I'm just saying that burden exists on both sides of the dollar.
    • [spp-timestamp time="1:02:16"] Creating ultimate consistency is a game changer.
    • [spp-timestamp time="1:03:12"] From 2005 to 2006, we had 34% revenue growth. We have a business boot camp that all new hires go through.
    • [spp-timestamp time="1:08:58"] FINAL WORDS

If You Can Believe It, You Can Achieve It! Our Theme with Today's LIVE Guest Co-Host, Jeremy Motivates:

Jeremy Vermeulen is a husband, father, youth basketball coach, motivational speaker and author. His talks focus on the topics of happiness, overcoming adversity, believing in yourself, positivity and leadership.

He has always been someone who has found joy in helping people realize that life is so much more than what is right in front of them. In the winter of 2012, Jeremy jumped at the opportunity to volunteer as a youth basketball coach for a non-profit organization and live out a lifelong dream of coaching. This is where his passion to help others really started to shine. Then, in 2015 after overcoming a one and a half year battle with depression Jeremy's passion became a burning desire fueled by a single notion that "If you believe it, you can achieve it!” Since then his mission has been to take his message from the basketball court and share it with the masses.

Jeremy's belief that personal growth and development a long with hard work can help you achieve the life you desire; it is what drives him to continuously learn new methods and techniques that can be used to enhance not only his life but also the lives of others as well.

On This Episode You Will Hear:
    • [spp-timestamp time="00:30"] Introduction
    • [spp-timestamp time="04:14"] Independent youth facilities and organizations, basketball seasons, reinforcing all these positive things. Reinforce that if you make a mistake, it's all right, you're going to make a mistake. But get back up, get back with the team, keep doing what you're doing.
    • [spp-timestamp time="08:26"] I don't let any kid ever feel like they are the weak link, I identify which kids are strong and what skills, etc. Some kids maybe have two to three good skills.
    • [spp-timestamp time="11:27"] Most of my speaking when I go out to youth organizations, or even mental health facilities, like outpatient mental health facilities, I'm telling them about my story. I'm telling them how I fought back against those things.
    • [spp-timestamp time="14:35"] Embrace your fears.
    • [spp-timestamp time="16:50"] Initially, I'd hit a pause. Life will get in the way, you know, family things, whatever it may be.
    • [spp-timestamp time="19:22"] Setting a definitive ultimate goal. At the end of the year, you gotta have it completed. Draw a hard line in the sand.
    • [spp-timestamp time="24:08"] I look at life as a journey. We all have one. We're all living that journey every day. Mine was trying to find happiness through some of the adversity that I had faced.
    • [spp-timestamp time="28:25"] There is nothing that I wouldn't do for my kids. There's nothing that I wouldn't sacrifice for them. There are sacrifices I'm making in my life, to give them a better life, not to say that I had a bad life, but something different than I had.
    • [spp-timestamp time="33:00"] How can I take care of my kids if I'm mentally drained.
    • [spp-timestamp time="38:18"] That was kind of the start of a weird, very weird journey and childhood.
    • [spp-timestamp time="40:09"] So in the fairy tale world, she, my mother was the evil queen. My brother was the horrible step brother.
    • [spp-timestamp time="41:49"] I got depressed. I hit a depression wall.
    • [spp-timestamp time="44:50"] Doing some personal development and self-education.
    • [spp-timestamp time="47:55"] You try and deal with the stress. But you forget about the emotional portion. That's really what broke me because you have two choices. I feel you have two choices. When it comes to stress and emotions. You can either address them and deal with them, or you can let them build up and you'll break.
    • [spp-timestamp time="51:00"] Two years to get past the change the shame component.
    • [spp-timestamp time="52:56"] Putting in the reps, you had to start putting in the healing reps.
    • [spp-timestamp time="56:32"] Jim Rohn left a lot huge footprint in the world. Yeah, and then I found Eric Thomas.
    • [spp-timestamp time="01:04:05"] Final Words
