Locked On Angels - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels took 2 out of 3 from the New York Mets this weekend on the East Coast, and Shohei Ohtani had himself a nice Friday and Saturday at the plate! He's continued to play through the UCL injury as expected, and GM Perry Minasian spoke to the media about the timeline of events leading up to his injury and Shohei feeling like an MRI wasn't necessary when dealing with previous issues. It was a nice dose of clarity to a situation that saw all kinds of accusations being flung around since the news broke, and Mike and Jon respond to it in segment 1!

Then, the Halos were able to pick up wins on Friday and Saturday by playing fundamental baseball and getting strong pitching starts. Unfortunately, on Saturday, Chase Silseth was the victim of one of the worst instances of Angels baseball that fans may have seen in their entire lives, and we'll discuss it all in segment 2.

Plus, we talk about what led to the Angels loss on Sunday and how, despite winning 2 out of 3, we feel like this series was just... fine? We'll explain what we mean in segment 3!

Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels received som terrible news on Wednesday, when imaging revealed that Ohtani has a torn UCL, a repeat of his injury that prevented him from pitching the latter half of 2018 and all of 2019. In addition, it was reported that Mike Trout will be going back on the IL after experiencing pain in his hand from the removal of his hamate bone. It's a devastating injury and heartbreaking as Halo fans, as it's the final nail in the coffin for any hope that remained. As it stands, Shohei will appear to continue hitting as he did in 2018, but not having him on the mound will be difficult for the Angels. Mike and Jon share their immediate thoughts on the injury, what it means for Shohei Ohtani and the Angels, and how it affects his free agency after the season. We'll cover it all in segment 1.

Then, the Angels were swept by the Reds, after the Halos dropped both games of Wednesday's doubleheader. It was another mid start for Reid Detmers, who got away from what made him effective against the Texas Rangers last week. The Reds showed that they are everything the Angels wish they could be, and we've got the recap in segment 2.

Plus, with all of the injury news, we're having a conversation on what the Angels need to do with Anthony Rendon. While players are fighting through injuries and wanting to be on the field, Rendon seems to be enjoying his time on the bench and has given no indication that he's working his way back. We'll share our unfiltered thoughts in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels and the Cincinnati Reds played game 1 of this 3-game set over two days, and game 1 saw the return of Mike Trout and a strong start from Lucas Giolito. Unfortunately, both were spoiled by some fielding issues; an all-or-nothing dive from Hunter Renfroe and an error on Nolan Schanuel at 1st allowed the Reds to come back to put the Halos down 4-3. Elly De La Cruz ran circles around the bases and Reds starter had a career-high 10 strikeouts against the Angels, and homers from Mike Moustakas, Brandon Drury, and Logan O'Hoppe weren't enough to overcome the deficit. We've got your recap in segment 1!

Then, we break down Mike Trout's performance in his first game back and ask the question of why he was batting in front of Shohei Ohtani instead of behind him in the order. We'll talk about his at-bats and much more in segment 2!

Plus, Reid Detmers had quite a turnaround his last time on the mound against the Texas Rangers, so Mike and Jon dove into the stats to find out what changed for him. We've got the answer, and we'll share what Reid MUST do in his start on Wednesday night!

The Los Angeles Angels and the Cincinnati Reds have not had a lot of games against each other over their existence, but they'll be playing a 3-game set across Tuesday and Wednesday due to Monday's postponement, and we're here together with Jeff Carr of Locked On Reds for an epic crossover! As the two teams prepare to face each other for the first time since 2019, what can each team expect from the other? Both teams have been struggling in the month of August, and while the Angels were hoping to make a playoff push from the start of the season, the Reds have found themselves in it by surpassing expectations and calling up their stars like Elly de la Cruz! Mike, Jon, and Jeff discuss their teams and how they're feeling as they get set for the Angels vs. Reds!

The Los Angeles Angels were given a grand slam from Shohei Ohtani, turned a clutch triple play, saw the return of Logan O'Hoppe behind the plate, and the debut of Nolan Schanuel, their #1 pick of the 2023 MLB Draft, and they still lost 2 out of 3 to the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend. After a disappointing weekend that saw the Halos severely let their fans down, Mike and Jon are here to recap the weekend and also discuss the call-up of Nolan Schanuel! It's all the highs, lows, and everything in between on today's Locked On Angels!

The Los Angeles Angels got a much-needed win against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night, coming after a near-no-hitter performance from Reid Detmers! Detmers took the no-hit bid into the 8th, but it was broken up by a Marcus Semien bloop hit. Despite that, it was an incredible turnaround for the struggling starting pitcher and a win in the books thanks to homers from Shohei Ohtani and Matt Thaiss. We've got all the details, what was different about Detmers' start, and discuss Matt Wise's influence on the outing in segment 1!

Then, the Angels have played some pretty abysmal baseball since the Trade Deadline, and we've got all the stats to show it. It's not been fun to watch, and the stats explain why. We'll dive into what's caused these issues in segment 2!

Plus, should Halo fans give the Angels a standing ovation in the same way Phillies fans did for Trea Turner? Who deserves it, and who needs it? We'll talk about it in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels dropped another game to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, falling 7-3 after a "Meh" start from Lucas Giolito. There wasn't much to speak of in this game other than the weird accidental home run from Corey Seager that Jordyn Adams caught, then it bounced out of his glove and over the wall in the same stadium Jo Adell did it in back in 2020. Mike and Jon discuss the game, but also get into what's left on the team to cheer for? Who can we root for and be excited about, and Mike has a suggestion for what should Perry Minasian consider doing in the off-season in segment 1!

Then, why does this stretch of bad baseball seem so much worse than the bad baseball the Angels have played over the last few years? Mike and Jon have several reasons why this has felt so awful and disappointing that we'll share in segment 2.

Plus, just to bring a little bit of hope to the show, we're looking at the top prospects in the Angels system now that some have been traded to other teams and where some of the new draft picks rank! We'll tell you where the top prospects stand and dive into their numbers in segment 3!

The Los Angeles Angels really did their best to suck the life out of being a fan on Monday night against the Texas Rangers. They might be forgiven for having a tough time against future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, but it was more than that; it was the poor play on the field, the shoddy defense, and the mental mistakes that really made it hard to root for them. Patrick Sandoval had a short night, the Halos mustered up 1 hit, and Eduardo Escobar had to pitch to finish the game. Well, we've got the recap for you, for better or worse, in segment 1!

Then, over the course of the frustrating season, much has been made of the Angels hitting and pitching coaches, Marcus Thames and Matt Wise, and the jobs they've done. So, we've ran the numbers, and we've got the results - what's worked, and what hasn't? Who can keep their job, and who absolutely needs to go? You probably already know, but we've got the stats for you and what they tell us fans in segments 2 and 3!
