Locked On Angels - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Angels

It's been a tough time, folks! The Angels lost their fourth straight game and moved to 13-16 on the season. A fun Shohei Ohtani start on the mound was ultimately not enough as a bad offensive performance from an injury-riddled lineup, blow-up from Junior Guerra, and questionable bullpen management from Joe Maddon led to a loss.

We dive into yet another Angels loss and talk about one of the weakest links of the 2021 team: their putrid defense. No team has committed more errors in baseball (29) and the Angels rank near the bottom of the list in other measures that look at range and ability to convert batted balls into outs. We break down this major red flag and how it's a double-whammy with a bad pitching staff.

*FULL DISCLAIMER: This episode was mostly recorded before the news about Anthony Rendon's negative MRI came back.*

We spend Tuesday's episode breaking down an absolutely insane day of Angels baseball. It started with the early news that Shohei Ohtani would miss his scheduled start on the mound after arm soreness from getting hit by a pitch the prior day. It ended with a sigh of relief after x-rays came back negative on Anthony Rendon's leg. In between those events, a whole lot happened in an Angels 7-3 loss.

We break down a disappointing series loss and the Angels' inability to put together a stretch of winning in the recent weeks. After a 3-3 stretch against inferior teams, the Angels now have a gauntlet of tough teams coming up, including the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers at Angel Stadium this week. We discuss how tough of a stretch this is and what to expect.

Thursday's episode recaps the Angels win on Wednesday that gave them the series win in Texas and goes over the electric Chris Rodriguez. We dive into how remarkable it is that Rodriguez even made it to the majors, how unique his pitch mix is, and how the Angels should handle him as a starter/reliever moving forward.

Tuesday's Angels game was a real doozy so we spend little time discussing the game, other than a quick rant about home plate umpire Ron Kulpa. For the remainder of the episode, we try to explain how Angels pitchers have one of the worst ERAs in baseball despite being a top-10 unit by other extremely important measures.

We spend Tuesday's episode breaking down the performances of the two most important Angels players: Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. After breaking down the insanely entertaining and impressive win on Monday night, we specifically talk about Ohtani's electric night at the plate and on the mound. We dive into how unique this all is by comparing him to other players from around the league. In the remainder of the episode, we talk about how the normalization of Mike Trout's greatness is overshadowing what is currently the best month of his career.
