The A’s teased hope early in Detroit, jumping all over the best pitcher in baseball, Tarik Skubal. Brent Rooker launched a two-run bomb in the first, then Denzel Clarke—yes, that Denzel Clarke—crushed his second big league homer to give the A’s a 4-2 lead. But as quickly as optimism sparked, it was extinguished just as fast. Luis Severino, supposed to be the veteran presence in this rotation, got lit up for seven runs in five innings. And once again, the A’s unraveled the same way they have all season—bad pitching, worse defense, and a dugout that looks like it’s already showered and on the bus by the sixth inning. By the seventh, the game devolved into a blooper reel. Clarke and Butler nearly crashed into each other in right center on a routine fly ball like two Little Leaguers who missed the last cutoff drill, not the first time this season. Then came the baserunning disaster class: Soderstrom and Wilson thrown out at second down three runs in the seventh. And through it all, Lawrence Butler kept slamming his helmet and bat like a middle schooler denied extra screen time. Passion? That’s what the broadcast crew tried to call it. But let's call it what it is: undisciplined, unchecked frustration that mirrors a team that’s given up pretending it cares. The deeper issue isn’t just the mistakes—it’s the fact nobody seems to care enough to fix them. You won’t hear Martin Gallegos press Mark Kotsay postgame.
