Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Lance Leipold and the Kansas Jayhawks are hiring former Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes to the same post to bring the wide zone to Lawrence full time. Grimes led a huge turnaround at Baylor in his first year with the Bears, making them into one of the best rushing teams in the nation and helping them towards a Big 12 and Sugar Bowl title.

Jeff Grimes has held various coaching positions, including roles at Brigham Young University (BYU), Auburn University, and LSU. He gained recognition for his work as the offensive line coach at BYU and played a key role in developing effective offensive strategies.

One of Grimes' notable achievements was during his tenure as the offensive coordinator at BYU, where he orchestrated a highly successful offensive system. His innovative approach and success with developing players contributed to his reputation as a skilled and respected coach in college football.

It is time for Dave Aranda, Jake Spavital and the Baylor Bears to look for reinforcements in the transfer portal, and they will need depth at quarterback. The Bears have already offered Holy Cross QB Matthew Sluka, but current players are trying to recruit Boise State QB Taylen Green, whose game resembles Auburn Tiger great Cam Newton.

With Florida State's snub of the College Football Playoff, the Big 12 could be an option for them to defect to, but it most likely would see a plethora of ACC schools' calling Brett Yormark for a spot.

Baylor's men's basketball team is top 10 in the nation yet again, but attendance at the Ferrell Center is a major problem. Will the move to the Foster Pavilion solve this?

New NCAA President Charlie Baker proposed a new subdivision within Division I for only the richest and largest athletic programs, allowing for those universities to pay players directly and without regulations on NIL. Schools like Baylor and TCU may be above the financial threshold at the beginning, but many schools, especially Big 12 powers like Oklahoma State and Kansas State, will be physically and metaphorically left behind.

Can Baylor survive this change?

The Bears have offered one of the most sought after quarterback in the transfer portal, Holy Cross's Matthew Sluka, who will remind Baylor fans of another former quarterback to wear the green and gold.

Plus, Baylor took care of business again on the court, routing Seton Hall, 78-60.

The Baylor Bears officially unveiled Jake Spavital as Dave Aranda's new offensive coordinator Monday. While meeting with the media, Spavital talked more about his offensive philosophy as well as how much he believes the Bears need to utilize the transfer portal.

Plus, play making slot receiver Monaray Baldwin announced he will be coming back to be apart of the new spread offense. Scott Drew's Baylor team is shooting better than any basketball team in the nation, and they are just getting started.

Drake Dabney was one of Dave Aranda's top weapons at tight end in the 2023 season, catching five touchdowns and going over 500 yards for a lackluster Baylor offense. After finishing his degree at Baylor, he announced Sunday he would be hitting the transfer portal.

Tight ends play a versatile role in football, contributing both as blockers in the running game and as receivers in the passing game. They line up on the offensive line and are known for their ability to catch passes, block defenders, and provide flexibility to the offensive scheme. Tight ends are often key targets in the red zone due to their size and ability to create mismatches against defenders.

After a record breaking rookie campaign at Baylor that saw him be named a Freshman All-American, Richard Reese endured a much different role in the Bears offense in 2023. A role where he barely touched the ball. In playing the same of games as he did his freshman season, Reese got 132 less carries, 666 (yikes) fewer yards, and 12 less touchdowns in his sophomore compared to his stellar first campaign, all while averaging only .3 yards per rush less in 2023.

Given a bigger role in the offense, there is reason to believe he could've challenged his 972 yards in 2022 and possibly became the 16th 1,000 yard rusher in program history.

Now, Richard Reese is staying at Baylor. That's a big win for this staff.

Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears have hired Jake Spavital to run the offense in Waco next year and NIL has been a crucial talking point in the program's descent to the bottom of the Big 12 the last two seasons.

"NIL" in college football refers to the NCAA's Name, Image, and Likeness policy. This groundbreaking policy, implemented in July 2021, allows college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. Before NIL, NCAA rules prohibited athletes from receiving compensation for endorsements, sponsorships, or other opportunities that used their personal brand.

NIL rights empower college athletes to enter into endorsement deals, promote products on social media, and participate in various commercial opportunities while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. This significant shift in policy recognizes athletes' rights to benefit financially from their own image and popularity.

The NIL policy has had a transformative impact on college sports, providing athletes with new opportunities to capitalize on their marketability. Athletes from various sports, including football, have taken advantage of NIL opportunities to secure endorsement deals, create merchandise, and engage with their fan base on social media.

Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears are still on the lookout for a new offensive coordinator to save Aranda's tenure as head coach. Baylor has indicated they are looking for a former head coach to take the offensive reigns. Three Texas legends who fit those criteria are Chad Morris, Major Applewhite and Art Briles.

Morris led top 10 offenses under Dabo Swinney before a disastrous 22 game stint as the head coach at Arkansas. Applewhite is a Texas Longhorn QB legend, who also coached the likes of Vince Young and Colt McCoy before taking on the OC role under Tom Herman at Houston and eventually becoming the Cougars' head coach.

Art Briles? Well you know about Art Briles. Could he be thanking Bobby Petrino for opening doors for him?

After Baylor announced they would retain Dave Aranda and fire Jeff Grimes, the athletic department quickly indicated they were looking for an OC with previous head coaching experience. This video details three of the best candidates on the market that fit that criteria.

Selecting an effective offensive coordinator is crucial for a football team's success. Look for someone with a deep understanding of offensive strategies, a track record of success, and strong leadership skills. A successful coordinator should possess a keen football IQ, showcasing the ability to analyze opposing defenses and exploit weaknesses. They should have experience working with various offensive systems, demonstrating adaptability and creativity.

Communication skills are paramount, as the offensive coordinator needs to convey complex strategies to players and collaborate with the head coach and other staff members. A coordinator who can motivate and inspire the team is invaluable. Look for someone with a history of developing quarterbacks and maximizing the potential of skill position players.

A strategic mindset is essential; a good offensive coordinator should be able to make in-game adjustments and craft game plans that suit the team's strengths. Additionally, organizational skills are crucial for efficient game preparation and playbook management.

Ultimately, a successful offensive coordinator is a dynamic individual who combines tactical acumen, leadership prowess, and adaptability to drive an effective and high-scoring offense.
