Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast on Baylor Bears Football & Basketball

Introducing Big 12 Power Rankings: BYU Jumps Iowa State for One? Utah Down, Colorado Up, Texas Tech, Kansas? from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

BYU has established itself as a historically dominant force in college football, particularly as a program outside the traditional Power Five conferences. Known for its high-powered offense, quarterback production, and consistent winning tradition, BYU has earned a reputation as one of the most successful and respected teams in the game. The Cougars’ legacy began to take shape in the 1970s and 1980s under legendary coach LaVell Edwards, who transformed BYU from a regional program into a nationally recognized powerhouse.

A key to BYU’s dominance has been its innovative approach to offense, especially during Edwards' tenure. Edwards introduced a pioneering passing game that helped redefine college offenses at a time when most teams relied heavily on the run. BYU’s high-flying, pass-oriented attack allowed it to compete with and often outperform much larger programs. The Cougars became known as a "Quarterback Factory," producing elite talent like Jim McMahon, Steve Young, and Ty Detmer, the latter winning the Heisman Trophy in 1990.

One of BYU’s crowning achievements came in 1984, when the Cougars went undefeated and claimed the national championship after a victory over Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. This accomplishment was historic, as BYU became the first team from outside the Power Five to win a national title in the modern era, breaking barriers for smaller programs.

Even beyond their championship season, BYU has maintained dominance through numerous conference titles in the WAC and Mountain West, and an impressive bowl record. The program’s consistent winning seasons, high national rankings, and ability to schedule and beat Power Five opponents throughout its independent years have solidified BYU’s status as a dominant force.

Now as a member of the Big 12, BYU’s tradition of excellence continues, with a strong foundation that speaks to its historic dominance and consistent success on the national stage.

The Baylor Bears ran for 343 yards (142 from Dawson Pendergrass) against Oklahoma State, but one of the main storylines in the Baylor win was the Oklahoma State running back. 2023 Doak Walker Award winner Ollie Gordon was held under 80 yards, thanks in large part to LB Matt Jones. Jones credited his grandfather's memory for his huge performance, with 10 solo tackles, 3 tackles for loss, a sack, and forcing a Gordon fumble at the one yard line.

The Baylor Bears made it two wins on the bounce with a 38-28 win to send the Oklahoma State Cowboys to 0-5 in the Big 12. The Bears ran the ball extremely well again, rushing for 343 yards with Dawson Pendergrass accounting for 142 by himself. Baylor held Ollie Gordon under 80 yards on the ground, leading to another double digit victory.

Introducing College Football's BIGGEST Upset: UCF Shocks BYU in Orlando Saving Gus Malzahn, New Analyst Predicts from Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast.

Follow the show: Locked On Big 12 | Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

Historically, BYU and UCF are two of the most successful programs outside the traditional Power Five conferences, each carving out significant achievements while building strong football legacies. While BYU’s football history spans decades, with a national championship and a legacy of quarterback excellence, UCF’s success is more recent but equally impressive, especially given the speed at which the program has risen to national prominence.

BYU’s football history is highlighted by its 1984 national championship, which cemented the Cougars’ place among college football’s elite. Under legendary coach LaVell Edwards, BYU became known for its innovative passing offense and produced a string of elite quarterbacks, including Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer. BYU has consistently been a competitive force, winning numerous conference titles in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and Mountain West and maintaining a strong reputation even during its independent era before joining the Big 12.

UCF, while younger as a football program (established in 1979), has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent years. The Knights made national headlines with an undefeated season in 2017, claiming a "self-declared" national championship and earning respect as one of the top Group of Five programs. UCF’s recent success includes multiple American Athletic Conference (AAC) titles, impressive bowl victories, and consistent rankings in the top 25.

While BYU’s historical success is more established and includes a national title, UCF’s recent surge has made it a comparable program in terms of modern competitiveness. Both programs have now joined the Big 12, setting up exciting future matchups between two teams with strong football traditions.

Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson has emerged as one of the top passers in the Big 12, but was setting records when he was in high school in Lubbock. Seth Parr, his high school coach, reveals why Texas Tech did not recruit Robertson and what the old coach told him before throwing 5 touchdowns in a blowout win over the Red Raiders Saturday. Baylor fans will love his predictions about Sawyer's future.
