Locked On Bucs – Daily Podcast On The Tampa Bay Buccaneers

As we get set for a Week 8 matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints, Ross Jackson and David Harrison dive deeper into the contest between NFC South rivals.

Passing game storylines figure to play a big role as a wounded Bucs secondary faces a Saints receiving corps struggling to find consistent playmakers.

Then, we dive into the key matchups to the game, revolving largely around New Orleans running back, Alvin Kamara. Will the Tampa Bay defense be able to contain the star back without having to dedicate too many defensive assets to doing so? And can the Saints offense, especially quarterback Jameis Winston, do enough to capitalize on his talents?

Finally, keeping Kamara contained, and winning the turnover battle figure to be the keys to winning for both the Buccaneers and the Saints, respectively.

And we close out, with a pointed question about New Orleans' trust levels in Winston.

Only in a Bucs and Saints matchup could Tom Brady be the least talked about quarterback, and it's all happening, on the Locked On Bucs Podcast!

James is joined by WTSP 10 Tampa Bay Sports Director Evan Closky to dive into all things Tampa Bay Buccaneers as some listeners call in to voice their opinion on the 600th touchdown ball trade-off and what they would have done had they been handed Tom Brady's record setting touchdown game ball. Evan then gives his take on the situation.

Mike Evans has a pretty impressive NFL record of his own, being the only receiver in NFL history to begin a career with seven consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. No other receiver to ever put on a pair of cleats can lay claim to that milestone. Not Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Calvin Johnson, Steve Largent, Lance Allworth, Paul Warfield, or Raymond Barry. You may ask why I named those specific receivers and the answer is simple - those are the only receivers to ever be inducted to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame on the first ballot.

So, having said that, is Mike Evans a first ballot Hall of Famer? It's too early to tell right now, but James and Evan debate the merits should Evans continue on this trajectory. He's having another impressive season - currently on pace to set a career high in touchdown receptions for the second consecutive season - but there's a long way to go before we start thinking about gold jackets and whether or not he will get one on his first year of eligibility.

With the New Orleans Saints next up on the schedule, Bucs fans are preparing to see a familiar face in quarterback Jameis Winston. As of now, the Saints are averaging 10 points less per game on offense than the Buccaneers but allowing 4.2 points less per game to their opponents than Tampa Bay is. As for Jameis?

Well, James and Evan discuss his utilization as he is currently 29th in the NFL in pass attempts - fewer than some players that have played fewer games due to injury or circumstance compared to Winston, who has been a starter all season. Is this a way to minimize risk by forcing Winston to be a game manager? Or is Alvin Kamara just so good that he commands the ball enough that Winston doesn't have to throw it?

Finally, Evan gets into his predictions for player of the game, bold prediction, and final score as the Bucs start off as a five point favorite on the road against their divisional rival - the first meeting between the two since the Bucs eliminated the Saints from the playoffs in the NFC Divisional round.

After Victory Monday for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, comes Takeaway Tuesday, at the Locked On Bucs Podcast!

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy entered COVID-19 Protocols on Monday. Did he bring it with him to Tampa?

As we take a deeper look into the Week 7 win for the Buccaneers, we ask the question: Did Bruce Arians leave the starters in too long? The NFC Playoff picture may shed some light on the answer as five teams currently stand with one loss or less in football's best conference.

Then, James makes the case for Bucs quarterback Tom Brady being the real MVP leader as we near the midway point of the season. How does Brady's 2021 stack up against Kyler Murray's (Arizona Cardinals, QB)?

In our final segment, James and David discuss the need for Tampa Bay to continue with the laser-like focus they've had since losing to the Los Angeles Rams, and how close wide receiver Chris Godwin is to climbing up the Buccaneers record books a little more, this coming Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out of Week 7 of the 2021 NFL Season with their sixth win, and have started the year 6-1 for the first time in franchise history.

In the win, quarterback Tom Brady threw his 600th career touchdown, becoming the first and only passer in the history of the league to do so.

Catching the pass was star wide receiver Mike Evans who finished with three scoring catches on the day, as Brady threw four in the first half, adding another to wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Even without Antonio Brown, the Bucs were able to put together an impressive offensive performance, paired with a dominant defensive game for the Bucs who forced five turnovers against Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears.

Three interceptions by defensive backs Dee Delaney, Jordan Whitehead and Pierre Desir accent the impeccable job being done by Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles as he continues to find ways for his unit to produce despite injuries to Carlton Davis III, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Richard Sherman.

The Buccaneers also got four sacks on the day with two coming from Jason Pierre-Paul and one each from Shaquil Barrett and Antoine Winfield Jr.

All three also forced fumbles, with Barrett and defensive tackle Vita Vea coming up with recoveries as well.

Running back Leonard Fournette continued his strong rushing streak with 81-yards on 15 carries, scoring a touchdown in the process.

Ronald Jones got more action than usual, getting 10 carries himself, and turning in 63-yards on the ground with those touches.

In all, it was a dominant performance by a clear Super Bowl challenger, with the only score for the Bears coming on a 28-yard field goal by kicker, Cairo Santos.

Chicago also produced just one receiver with over 40-yards as tight end Cole Kmet gained 43-yards through the air while Allen Robinson was held to 16 and Darnell Mooney had just 39.

Rookie running back Khalil Herbert was able to have a solid individual outing, carrying the ball 18 times for 100-yards.

With the win, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers improve to 6-1, and now get set to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 8 of the 2021 NFL Season.

Our final look at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears matchup in Week 7 of the 2021 NFL Season!

We start with a look at the most recent injury updates from both sides of this contest. What does it look like if Antonio Brown can't go for the Buccaneers? What will the Bears look like without Khalil Mack?

Both questions need answering as we await the final injury reports, dropping Friday.

Then, we field questions from members of Bucs Nation who seek clarification in the Tampa Bay backfield.

Is Ke'Shaun Vaughn going to get his chance to show his talents in 2021? And is Ronald Jones II really a lesser back compared to Leonard Fournette, or is he just one mistake away from gaining more playing time?

Then, we take a look towards the weekend with our keys to a Buccaneers win and we tell you why Chris Godwin and Ross Cockrell are the players to watch in pewter.

James and David also give their bold predictions, and share their final expectations for which side will come out successful when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Chicago Bears, this Sunday.

With the first six weeks of the 2021 NFL Season in the books, we're officially one-third of the way through the year, and it's time for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' First Trimester Review!

Scott Smith (Senior Writer/Editor of Buccaneers.com) joined me on the Locked On Bucs Podcast to discuss the first six weeks of Bucs football.

Last year at this time Tampa Bay was 4-2, and sitting at 5-1 now the record may not be much different, but the feel of the team certainly is.

This time last year Tom Brady was still new to the franchise and seeing him in a Buccaneers uniform was a little weird. Now, everyone is a lot more comfortable, but it doesn't mean the influence he brings has faded.

New confidence arrived with Brady, and it's thriving now on the defense, even as they deal with injuries to players like Lavonte David, Carlton Davis III, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and the up and down health of Jamel Dean and Antoine Winfield Jr. Brought in to help relieve some of the tension, Richard Sherman has even found himself injured, adding to the difficulties.

No matter, Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has his unit persevering in the face of adversity, and it has the confidence on the defense soaring as they look forward to bringing back their injured starters throughout the year.

Smith and I also took a look back at the games played, and I asked him to identify his favorite win of the year up to now and got his thoughts on whether or not there are any residual concerns lingering after Tampa Bay's one loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Of course, we also take a look forward and around the league.

In the next trimester, the Buccaneers play five games in six weeks with their bye week coming in the next stretch of the NFL schedule.

I asked Smith which game is the most important to win, and he stated rather bluntly, the first of two contests against the New Orleans Saints is easily the most important of the next five.

Around the league, Smith weighs in on whether or not fans of the game should be buying into the Arizona Cardinals and their quarterback Kyler Murray, or not. And, he shares his thoughts on the future of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs as they enter the second third of the 2021 NFL Season, at 3-3.

Looking back at the year that has been so far for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with plenty to look forward to, in the coming months.

Previewing the matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears in the NFL's Week 7 schedule of games.

Tom Brady has shared the field with a lot of quarterbacks over the years, but this will be the first time the former Michigan Wolverines signal-caller will play on the same surface as former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback, Justin Fields.

Fields was one year old when Brady was drafted in 2000 by the New England Patriots, and in the infancy of his career, will look to lead his Bears to an impressive upset win.

Currently favored to win by 13 points, the injured but surviving Buccaneers defense will have to match up against star wide receiver Allen Robinson, fellow receiver Darnell Mooney, and Week 6 standout rookie running back Khalil Mack.

Of course, Brady isn't entering the contest weaponless either, as Antonio Brown figures to be the most dangerous big-play threat (if he plays), while Mike Evans and Chris Godwin continue to form the NFL's most talented wide receiver trio.

While linebacker Khalil Mack looks to get pressure on Brady, defensive backs Jaylon Johnson and Eddie Jackson will look to secure the back end of Chicago's defense, trying to make the Bucs earn every point they score.

With Antoine Winfield Jr. on track to have a chance of returning from his concussion this weekend, he'll look to add secondary challenges for Fields as he tries to navigate through the likes of Jamel Dean while facing pressure from Vita Vea, Shaquil Barrett, and Devin White.

A tall task for the Chicago Bears visiting the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but as they say, there's a reason the games are played on the field.

Get the full preview with David Harrison (Locked On Bucs) and Lorin Cox (Locked On Bears) on 'Crossover Thursday' at the Locked On Podcast Network.

Putting a nice, tidy bow on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win over the Philadelphia Eagles, we are joined by 10 Tampa Bay's Evan Closky to get his thoughts on the Thursday Night game in week six. The defense stepped up as much as they could and Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles deserves a lot of credit for the way this defense has been playing given all the injury issues that side of the ball has been dealing with.

Leonard Fournette - and whichever iteration of "Lenny" you want to give him - has been playing on another level over the past few weeks. In the most recent three game stretch, Fournette is third in the NFL in all-purpose yards, making him an indispensable part of the offensive game plan. Not only did he take full control of the starting - or lead - running back job, but he's playing himself right into a big contract in the off-season. Does that mean this year is the last we will see of Leonard Fournette in a Buccaneers uniform or will Jason Licht and Mike Greenberg be able to work some more magic and keep "Regular Season Lenny" in Tampa for 2022 and beyond?

Also, where does this leave Ronald Jones? RoJo was the lead dog in 2020 and it was Fournette that had a sit down moment with Bruce Arians telling him to get on board or get out. Have the roles fully reversed in 2021? Jones is currently getting between four and six carries a game and Fournette's play has also rendered Gio Bernard somewhat irrelevant for the offense. Is RoJo giving up on his role on this team? Or is he still playing with the team first mentality, knowing his number could be called to carry the load at any given moment?

As the Bucs prepare to take on the Chicago Bears, all eyes are going to be on rookie quarterback Justin Fields. Fields has not been overly impressive, but at this stage it's hard to tell if that's because of Fields or if head coach Matt Nagy is hurting the offensive growth. Star receiver Allen Robinson has been a ghost all season as Fields tends to look towards Darnell Mooney more often than not. Is a matchup against the battered Bucs secondary a chance for Robinson to get back on track? Or will the Buccaneers defense step up again?

As Evan gives his bold predictions for the game, last week seems to have sparked the thought that "Sack Barrett" is on the cusp of coming back. The Buccaneers haven't had more than four sacks in a game this season, but Barrett was giving Jalen Hurts fits last week in Philadelphia. Now, he has the opportunity to do the same to a rookie quarterback inside Raymond James Stadium - which could signal the return of the Bucs' sack master.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made some roster moves on Monday, releasing wide receiver and return specialist Jaydon Mickens which can mean only one thing - it's Jaelon Darden time. In addition to the release of Mickens, the Bucs activated offensive lineman John Molchon. There were also some practice squad moves, with the Buccaneers releasing outside linebacker Elijah Ponder and signing long time cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson, who spent time with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. Wreh-Wilson will likely get a crash course in the defense in case the Bucs have to call on him to join the active roster, given all the injuries they're dealing with.

Mailbag time as we had a string of questions sent in from Mad Dog. We dive into the discussion as to what the bigger problem for the Bucs is right now - penalties or injuries. We've talked non-stop about the injury problems, but the Bucs are among the NFL's worst in penalties, being called for the second most in the league while having the most penalty yards of any team. Then again, is one affecting the other?

More discussion as to whether or not O.J. Howard should be dealt - especially now, coming off a solid performance in week six - for some help in the secondary. Or is it time to start talking about trading Cameron Brate?

If it were up to us, would we be willing to announce Todd Bowles or Byron Leftwich as Bruce Arians' successor, protecting them from the rest of the NFL? Or when Arians retires will it be time to look for an overhaul within the building?

Finally, it's never too early to start talking mock drafts, right? Of course not! That's why they call it Mocktober! There are some NFL mock drafts floating around so we thought it would be fun to see what positions the NFL Draft folks are starting to look towards for the Buccaneers through six weeks of the NFL season.

Remember when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady? What about when tight end Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement to play with his friend, and longtime teammate?

If you remember those, do you remember the circumstances leading to running back Leonard Fournette joining the Bucs squad in 2020? Or Antonio Brown for that matter?

You might remember them all, but you don't know those moments, and the build-up to them, the way Bruce Arians, Jason Licht, the players, and other members of the Buccaneers organization do.

Fortunately, author Lars Anderson has access to all the players in this story of champions assembled, and he's sharing everything he's learned with readers in his new book titled, "A Season in the Sun: The Inside Story of Bruce Arians, Tom Brady, and the Making of a Champion".

With a foreword by Arians himself, the book chronicles the assembling of a Super Bowl roster that didn't hit their stride until after they started the season 7-5, with more questions than answers it would seem at the time.

Eight wins in a row later, the Bucs were Super Bowl LV Champions, and as Anderson points out in our interview for the Locked On Bucs Podcast, every new member who joined the team to play with Brady, scored a touchdown in that 31-9 win over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

An expert on all things Arians, Anderson also wrote "The Quarterback Whisperer" with the head coach, then with the Arizona Cardinals.

This new book, "A Season in the Sun", is about as thorough an inside look as you can get, and it's done with the blessing and support of those who lived it.

More than just a book, Anderson offers a glimpse inside the franchise following an unprecedented season where media had as little access as ever, due to COVID-19.

It goes on sale on October 19th, 2021, and is a must-have for every fan of the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
