Locked On Cavs - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Cavaliers episodes

March 18, 2021Cleveland beats Boston as Isaac Okoro throws the hammer down
On today's episode of Locked on Cavs, co-hosts Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell discuss key takeaways from Cleveland's Wednesday night win over the Boston Celtics, the reports that the Toronto Raptors are no longer interested in trading for Andre Drummond, and they then discuss what the team's goals should be for the second half of the season.
After a few embarrassing losses on the road, the Cavaliers were able to get back on track in a 117-110 win over the Boston Celtics. The greatest lesson Cleveland learned was being able to handle adversity head-on, even when they blow a lead, and still hang on to win.
Cavaliers rookie Isaac Okoro has been really impressive defensively from as early as the preseason for Cleveland. But, games like Boston show how far he's come offensively with his posterizing dunk on Jayson Tatum and his clutch free throws down the stretch.
According to New York Times NBA insider Marc Stein, the Cleveland Cavaliers wanted Norman Powell from the Toronto Raptors in an Andre Drummond trade. With how well Powell has been playing as of late, it makes sense for the Raptors to not make him available while trying to acquire Drummond.
The Raptors seemed like Drummond's last gasp for a possible trade destination. We're about a week away from the trade deadline and all signs point to Drummond having his $27.8 million contract bought out by the Cavaliers.
Looking ahead to the rest of the year, Cleveland needs to maintain the mantra that the future is now for the team. That means Kevin Love, like Andre Drummond, needs to either come off the bench or stay home when he's finally healthy again. Larry Nance Jr. is the future for Cleveland at the power forward position, and the Cavaliers need to further integrate him with the team's young core.
For Jarrett Allen, meanwhile, the Cavaliers need to encourage his natural playmaking ability and refine him as a post player as well. This will only unlock Cleveland's offense further and also make Allen more worthy of the extension he's likely about to sign.
When it comes to Dylan Windler Cleveland needs to find a way to get him more easy looks on the perimeter. Coming out of Belmont Windler was considered a three-point assassin. With the Cavaliers, he hasn't gotten proper looks to showcase that ability and in turn, has made his rookie season somewhat disappointing.
Finally, the Cavaliers need to better utilize their player development staff to make sure they can round out their rotation one through fifteen. Teams like the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat are organizations Cleveland can take examples from in order to do this.

March 16, 2021Cavs-Heat preview and trade talk with Locked on Heat
Locked on Cavs for Tuesday, March 16
On a Locked on Cavs x Locked on Heat crossover, Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell are joined by Locked on Heat and Locked on NBA host David Ramil to preview Tuesday's Cavs-Heat game, run through possible deals to between Cleveland and Miami and more.
Full notes:
The Cavs will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Tuesday in Miami - what are the chances of that happening? And will the Heat have Bam Adebayo, who has been out recently due to injury?
What separates the Heat and Cavs as franchises? Is there something Cleveland can learn from and build from? And from a Miami perspective, what stands out about the Cavs and how they currently build?
The Heat, like a lot of teams, would probably like Larry Nance Jr., but the Cavs aren't going to do that trade. But would Miami like Taurean Prince? According to Ramil, the answer is no for a few reasons.

March 15, 2021Kevin Love leaves Sunday's game with an injury
On today's show, Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell dive into a bad weekend for the Cavs with a focus on Sunday's loss to the Hawks, Friday's loss to the Pelicans and Kevin Love's injury in just his second game back.
Full notes:
To open the show, Chris and Evan dive into the Cavs' 100-82 loss to the Hawks. Cleveland kept it close for a stretch, but fell apart in the fourth quarter. As usual, they give out game MVP, play of the night and stat of the night,.
Chris recaps Cavs-Pelicans solo by diving into the Cavs' brutal loss, where the Cleveland trailed by as many 40 despite the Larry Nance Jr. and Kevin Love both returning from injury,.
To wrap the show, the hosts dive into Love leaving Sunday's game with an injury after less than two minutes and what it might mean for him going forward. Is it time for the team to shut him down for the season and not risk any further setbacks?

March 12, 2021Larry Nance Jr. is (probably) back in action
On today's show, Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell cover updates from the Cavs' first All-Star media availability before answer three more questions about the second half of the Cavs' season: What will we think of Darius Garland at the end of the season?; Where Will Isaac Okoro’s offensive game be at the end of the year?; Where does the defense ultimately end up? Is it good? Is it just fine? Or is it bad?
Full notes:
According to the Cavs, Larry Nance Jr. is on track to play Friday. That should be a really good thing for the Cavs. As for Kevin Love and Darius Garland, it sounds less likely that they'll be back against the Pelicans.
The Cavs' defense has altered between good and bad this year, almost to an extreme degree. But what is real and what isn't? All that seems secure is that Isaac Okoro and Jarrett Allen are good defenders to build a defense with.
Speaking of Okoro, he's taken little steps forward on offense this year, but still feels like a major work in progress on that end of the floor. It doesn't seem likely he can change that reality before the end of the season.
As for Darius Garland, he arguably has the most to prove of ny member of the Cavs. If Collin Sexton is as locked into the team's plans as we seem to think, how does Garland fit into those plans? Can he have a second half of the season that can get him to a place where the Cavs lock him into the core too?

March 11, 2021Remembering Joe Tait and questions about the Cavs' second half
On today's Locked on Cavs Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell discuss the passing of Joe Tait, the Cavaliers making the playoffs, Kevin Love's role, and Collin Sexton's future with the team. Plus, a live reaction to the Cavs signing Quinn Cook.
Here are the bullet points:
Joe Tait spent 39 years as the voice for the Cleveland Cavaliers and his calls are iconic like Tom Hamilton with the Indians and Jim Donovan with the Browns. Tait set the standard for what it takes to be a radio play-by-play announcer for the Cavaliers and also had an impact on the television side of things as well.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a brutal stretch in March and early April to start their second half of the season. Because of this, the team's goal of making the playoffs feels a lot more unrealistic.
Kevin Love is expected to return to Cleveland's lineup at some point. When he does, his impact will be immediate as it will allow the Cavaliers to run a more modern offense in terms of three-point shooting.
Cleveland general manager Koby Altman called this season an evaluation period for the team. The second half of the season will be an evaluation period for Love in particular on whether or not he's tradeable this upcoming offseason.
Is Collin Sexton worth a maximum contract? If he wasn't playing in Cleveland probably not. But, because of the smaller market, the Cavaliers will have no choice but to pay top dollar for Sexton's services.

March 10, 2021Defending Zion, Cavs-Pelicans preview and more with Locked on Pelicans
On today's show, Chris is joined by Locked on Pelicans host Jake Madison to talk about how teams defend (or at least try to) defend Zion Williamson, what David Griffin's tenure running the Pelicans has been like and why New Orleans is interested in Larry Nance Jr.
Full notes:
Zion Williamson is close to unstoppable and having an incredible season. For teams, it becomes very hard to even try to defend Zion effectively. And with no Larry Nance Jr., it probably means Jarrett Allen gets assigned the job.
David Griffin has a long runway in running the Pelicans - something he didn't really get in Cleveland. According to Madison, he's been a success off the court almost more than building a team on it.
The Pelicans' possible offers for Nance Jr. - who the Cavs are almost certainly not going to trade anyway - aren't any good.

March 05, 2021Why Andre Drummond to Chicago makes sense for everyone
Andre Drummond is now generating trade interest from the Chicago Bulls. At first glance, it doesn't make much sense for the Bulls to obtain Drummond. But, when Wendell Carter Jr. cannot stay healthy and is more of a power forward, along with Chicago's lackluster depth, making a move for Drummond makes a ton of sense.
Trading with Chicago also makes sense for Cleveland as well. Chris and Evan propose the Cavaliers send Andre Drummond and Cedi Osman to the Bulls for Otto Porter Jr. and Tomas Satoransky. Porter would be a welcome addition on the perimeter for Cleveland and Satoransky would be an immediate answer for the Cavaliers' glaring need for a backup point guard.
It's been reported that Cedi Osman and Taurean Prince are both available in trade discussions as well. It isn't surprising that Osman, one of Cleveland's more erratic players, and Prince, a veteran looking to play for a championship, are available. Osman could work in an environment with more structure while Prince could work nicely for any contender.
Finally, Chris and Evan talk about how Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Isaac Okro are considered untouchable but why it's reasonable that Larry Nance Jr. isn't.
