Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

The BYU football program stands at a crossroads as off-field drama threatens to overshadow a pivotal season. Promises made—and possibly broken—between head coach Kalani Sitake and athletic director Brian Santiago are fueling a high-stakes power struggle. Jake Hatch uncovers exclusive reporting from Dick Harmon and Gordon Monson revealing contract delays, leadership disputes, and the behind-the-scenes Jay Hill interview saga when Sitake briefly considered the Penn State job. With BYU football driving $125 million of the athletic department’s $155 million revenue yet receiving less than 50% of that in return, tension over NIL budgets and program resources has never been higher. Is Sitake justified in demanding more to propel BYU toward Big 12 championships and a College Football Playoff bid, or are the administrative divides too deep to bridge?

The episode unpacks the unprecedented move to separate BYU football from other varsity sports, placing Keith Vorkink in a leadership role distinct from Brian Santiago. Jake Hatch explores how this split impacts Sitake’s leverage, the reported promise of potential AD changes, and whether the new structure addresses long-standing issues of transparency and accountability over funds and support. Listeners get a breakdown of how miscommunication over men’s basketball NIL budgets and overall athletic spending triggered frustration, with basketball’s perceived $20+ million NIL budget compared to football’s sub-$10 million NIL pool fanning the flames.

Amidst the turmoil, attention pivots to the gridiron, where BYU’s roster—led by upperclassmen Isaiah Glasker and Cade Uluave along with rising stars like Bear Bachmeier and Legend Glasker—is poised for one of the most anticipated seasons in school history. Can Sitake galvanize his squad and keep their focus as distractions swirl and expectations soar? The conversation weighs whether internal culture and a “players-first” approach can insulate the team from outside noise, referencing Sitake’s track record of 10-win seasons and his commitment to putting players’ interests at the forefront.

On the basketball front, Kevin Young’s hiring of former Raptors assistant Patrick Mutombo as defensive coordinator promises a strategic shift. Drawing on his NBA and G League coaching pedigree, Mutombo’s defense philosophy aims to address BYU’s historic struggles with perimeter defense—a potential game-changer given the apparent absence of an elite paint protector in the current frontcourt.

Can BYU Athletics weather its leadership storm and deliver championship-caliber performances on the field and court? Jake Hatch delivers insider analysis on the Cougars’ present turmoil, looming decisions, and the on-field challenges that await as Utah Tech, Notre Dame, and Big 12 contenders loom on the horizon.

The 14th-ranked BYU football program enters game week with fresh optimism and a revamped depth chart spotlighting the rapid rise of young standouts and the enduring presence of veteran leaders. Legend Glasker headlines the conversation after grabbing a top spot at wide receiver, confirming preseason hype and ESPN’s All-Big 12 chatter. Host Jake Hatch breaks down every key move, from Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin anchoring the backfield alongside a surprising emergence from Preston Rex—a converted player making waves as the running back corps becomes one of the deepest in years.

On the offensive line, the Cougars roll out a blend of experience and new blood, with Bott Mulitalo's rookie rise standing out. Jake details how the unit’s mix of fifth-year seniors and promising sophomores provides fresh options while new team captains and co-captains—Bachmeier, Isaiah Glasker, Evan Johnson, Roger Saleapaga, Cade Uluave, Bruce Mitchell, and Keanu Tanuvasa—set the tone for a leadership-rich locker room. Tight end duties fall to Walker Lyons and Saleapaga, both expected to see significant double-tight formations as the offense evolves.

Defensive shifts grab attention, with Tanuvasa and Justin Kirkland starting up front, Bodie Schoonover’s versatility, and the “BB” and “FB” defensive roles drawing intrigue as fans anticipate how the staff will balance pass rush and run support. The linebacker room, now featuring Jake Clifton’s Big 12 experience, gets high praise for its competitiveness and depth, while the secondary introduces fresh four-star recruits and the dynamic Cannon DeVries, who doubles as the Cougars’ new punt returner. BYU’s specialists undergo a full reset—with Fuller Schurtz at punter and Matthias Dunn handling kicks, new faces will be in the spotlight on special teams.

Kalani Sitake addresses big-picture questions on Notre Dame’s upcoming visit, potential FCS scheduling shifts, and how the team adapts to BYU’s athletic department restructuring. He emphasizes the importance of home-field advantage at LaVell Edwards Stadium and the invaluable experience of blending new and returning talent. Player perspectives from Bachmeier, Martin, and Kirkland bring candid insight into their goals, the team’s internal confidence, and the hunger driving both established starters and emerging playmakers.

How will BYU balance newfound depth with the expectations of a demanding Big 12 schedule? Can these rising stars and proven veterans deliver a breakthrough season? Tune in for Jake Hatch’s comprehensive analysis and all the behind-the-scenes storylines that will define the Cougars’ path forward.

The BYU Cougars sent shockwaves through college football by separating their football program, led by Kalani Sitake, from the broader athletic department under athletic director Brian Santiago. Is this bold administrative realignment a short-term “Band-Aid fix” or the beginning of a deeper philosophical split within BYU Athletics? Jake Hatch unpacks insider perspectives—including Brett McMurphy’s report and Dick Harmon’s analysis—on whether true success in the Big 12 era depends on choosing between Sitake’s modern, adaptable approach and Santiago’s established structure, or if BYU can forge a new hybrid model to keep all sports thriving. The rising professionalization of college athletics, with massive budgets and NIL-driven dynamics, makes this more than just an internal shake-up—it’s a question about the future of sports at Brigham Young University on a national stage.

Amid the off-field drama, the Cougars also prepare for Utah Tech, who stumbled badly against Montana State in a 54-0 thrashing. Can Bear Bachmeier and the BYU football program’s deep roster turn their opener into a showcase and get key reps before a high-stakes Big 12 Conference matchup with Arizona in Week 2? Jake Hatch debates Sitake’s consistent sportsmanship—his reluctance to run up scores even when the odds are lopsided—against the need to keep the team sharp and evaluate young talent. He also questions whether FBS vs. FCS openers make sense given the wide talent gap and suggests alternative scheduling formats that could benefit both powerhouse and up-and-coming programs.

Plus, it’s NFL cutdown week: find out which former BYU stars survived the final roster trims and earned spots on 53-man lineups. Get updates on Puka Nacua, Fred Warner, Tyler Allgeier, and surprising news on Zach Wilson and Zayne Anderson. What’s next for players like Tanner Wall, Chase Roberts, and Tyler Batty, among others, as they fight to land on practice squads and stay in contention for midseason call-ups? Injury setbacks and tough decisions loom large, but Jake Hatch provides optimistic outlooks for several on-the-bubble Cougars determined to break through.

As BYU navigates a new administrative era and the start of football season, can Sitake’s leadership keep the Cougars competitive and united through mounting pressures, or will unresolved friction force a major crossroads for the entire athletic department?

TCU faces high stakes and high tension as they open the Big 12 football season against UNC in Dublin. Can the Horned Frogs shake off internal drama and avoid the infamous “Emerald Isle” curse, or will UNC’s chaotic coaching situation prove less of a distraction than expected? This week’s Big 12 Squad show gathers local experts from across the conference, including Jake Hatch and voices from the rest of the Locked On Big 12 Squad, to break down the wild landscape ahead of the official kickoff.

Overseas games steal the early spotlight, sparking spirited debate about Brett Yormark’s push for Big 12 international exposure. Is flying programs across the Atlantic worthwhile for recruiting and brand-building, or just a logistical headache that strains athletes and coaching staffs? Follow a truly candid conversation as hosts weigh the long-term value, discuss outcomes of past games plagued by weather and travel woes, and question if a single game in Europe can actually move the needle for a Fort Worth-based program like TCU.

As football returns, roster drama simmers beneath the surface. TCU’s readiness—on and off the field—remains under scrutiny, especially with recent locker room turbulence and questions about star performers like Jayden Craig. Meanwhile, UNC’s own preseason has been marred by staff suspensions and distractions. Can either team capitalize on the chaos, or will one stumble out of the gate and set the tone for their year? The Squad previews the most intriguing storylines, from defensive matchups to which team can weather adversity in week zero.

Attention turns to Big 12 contenders and surprises, with Texas Tech positioned as a favorite but embroiled in quarterback-related intrigue. Hosts provide firsthand updates on Tech’s pursuit of Tommy Castellanos, the implications for Joey McGuire’s reputation, and the shifting landscape of eligibility in an era shaped by transfers, NCAA rulings, and roster management headaches. Iowa State’s bold public predictions are put under the microscope—can their defense and coaching staff truly exceed expectations, or is this preseason bravado purely motivational?

The discussion rounds out with key storylines to watch across the conference, including recruiting trends, the challenges of roster turnover, and questions of team chemistry vs. talent. Will Texas Tech’s depth be their trump card, or could underdogs like Iowa State make things interesting? With lively banter, bold calls, and deep insider knowledge, this episode delivers an unmissable preview for die-hard Big 12 football fans.

Kalani Sitake finally gets his wish—the BYU football program now reports directly to university leadership, bypassing athletic director Brian Santiago. The real challenge begins: Can Sitake translate this off-field win behind the scenes into historic success on the field and lead the BYU Cougars into the College Football Playoff for the first time? Armed with increased autonomy and fresh support, the stakes have never been higher for both Sitake and the program as Cougar Nation expects nothing short of a double-digit win season and national relevance.

Jake Hatch analyzes the seismic shift in leadership structure, examining the mounting pressure on Sitake to prove his value amid rumors and internal drama. With the spotlight fixed on BYU football, anything less than an 11-win campaign—or a serious playoff push—could call the changes into question. Hatch discusses how this pivotal moment shapes the narrative around Sitake’s tenure and what’s required for the Cougars to capitalize on their newfound independence.

Attention then shifts to the gridiron, where BYU’s offensive line is poised to be a major strength thanks to offensive line coach TJ Woods and his veteran crew. Hatch sits down with Woods for an exclusive look at a unit anchored by four fifth-year seniors—Andrew Gentry, Bruce Mitchell, Sonny Makasini, Kyle Sfarcioc, and Trevin Ostler—plus emerging sophomore Paki Finau. Woods reveals the behind-the-scenes chemistry, key depth battles, and the high expectations for this season, pinpointing growth areas and highlighting the importance of continuity with proven leaders in the trenches. Bruce Mitchell’s transformation from defensive lineman to all-conference center, and the all-around maturity of the position group, signals BYU’s potential to dominate up front.

The discussion continues with a look at national recognition for BYU’s stars as LJ Martin (#37) and Faletau Satuala (#89) earn spots on the Locked On Podcast Network’s Top 100 college football players. Hatch explains why Martin could climb even higher in future rankings, outlines Satuala’s breakout on defense, and speculates whether Bear Bachmeier will soon join these ranks. The segment highlights what sets these impact players apart and how their performance might drive BYU's playoff quest.

With Utah Tech on the horizon and BYU seeking to solidify roster depth, Hatch breaks down the battles for backup roles, evaluates key matchups, and previews what to watch as the Cougars aim to stake their claim as Big 12 contenders. Will Sitake’s big gamble pay off and validate the Cougars’ bold structural changes, or is greater scrutiny about to find the program wanting?

Welcome to a breaking-news edition of Locked On Cougars, your daily home for all things BYU athletics. On today’s show, host Jake Hatch dives deep into a massive administrative shakeup in Provo and a controversial new ruling from the Big 12 Conference that directly impacts the hardwood.

First, we tackle the seismic news surrounding the BYU Athletic Department. In a stunning structural shift, BYU is officially separating the football program from Athletic Director Brian Santiago’s direct oversight. Going forward, head football coach Kalani Sitake will report directly to BYU Advancement Vice President Keith Vorkink. Jake breaks down why this restructuring happened, exploring how it sheds light on and ultimately aims to resolve the underlying friction that has quietly simmered between Santiago and Sitake. With the financial and logistical demands of the modern college football landscape—including the impending House settlement and $20.5 million revenue sharing—aligning the football program more closely with university advancement makes strategic sense. We analyze what this means for the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and how it positions Sitake and the football program for long-term stability in the Big 12.

Next, we shift our attention to the Marriott Center to address a sweeping regulatory change in college basketball. The Big 12 is moving to ban players with professional experience from participating in college athletics. This ruling sends shockwaves through the sport and carries massive implications for Kevin Young and the BYU Men’s Basketball program. Given Young’s extensive NBA background and his success in recruiting elite international talent from leagues like the Euroleague, BYU has heavily leaned into prospects with high-level professional backgrounds. We examine how this new conference mandate affects BYU’s current roster construction, its international pipeline, and what steps the coaching staff must take to adapt to changing NCAA and conference compliance standards.

From executive-level changes in the athletic offices to regulatory battles on the basketball court, this episode covers the pivotal storylines shaping the future of BYU sports.

Jaxon Kohler’s eligibility status for the BYU men's basketball program triggers major questions for Brigham Young University and the Big 12 Conference. As the NCAA’s legal wrangling over pro-athlete returns heats up, could BYU’s highly-touted transfer be benched before the season tips off? Jake Hatch spotlights the ongoing battle between conference rulebooks and individual player circumstances, separating fact from speculation gripping Cougar Nation. Analyzing freshly released parameters by the Big 12 and SEC, Jake Hatch reveals why legal injunctions and contract fine print—such as Kohler’s unsigned Exhibit 10 deal—might tip the scales in BYU’s favor. Adding to the intrigue, he questions whether the Big 12 will diverge from the SEC’s precedent on NBA Summer League participation, and highlights how the NCAA’s patchwork eligibility waivers for different recruiting classes have left a mess only the courts can solve.

Shifting gears, the BYU football program’s offense may find a new identity as freshman receiver Legend Glasker rockets to the forefront. Can this three-star recruit live up to the insider hype and carve out a career alongside Cougar greats like Austin Collie and Cody Hoffman? Jake Hatch examines Pete Thamel’s bold ESPN predictions that Glasker will be not just a standout freshman, but one of the best receivers in the entire Big 12. Real camp stories, highlight-reel moments against top corners like Evan Johnson, and context from Glasker’s own journey reveal a unit stacked with potential—if the young talent can transform raw ability into production on Saturdays for the BYU Cougars.

Listeners also get exclusive access to candid interviews, including Kila Keone’s viral redux appearance, reflecting on his development, wideout turnover, and the relentless grind to earn a spot on BYU’s depth chart. Insights on Bear Bachmeier’s growth at quarterback show why confidence in the locker room is soaring, even amid massive roster changes. Keone himself addresses doubts about the youth-heavy group, affirming the “confidence through the roof” shared by fellow pass-catchers and coaches.

From NCAA litigation fallout to breakout star momentum, this episode captures the drama and optimism fueling BYU’s basketball and football programs as the new season arrives. Will Kohler’s situation ignite a shift in conference-wide eligibility rules? Can Glasker and company ignite a new era for Cougar receivers? Jake Hatch digs deep into the storylines that matter most to Cougar faithful and Big 12 fans alike.

The BYU football program's pursuit of a consistent passing attack takes center stage as questions swirl around Kalani Sitake’s projection for a deep wide receiver rotation. Jake Hatch challenges the idea Sitake suggested of rotating up to eight wideouts, pointing to recent seasons where production has concentrated among a core group, and breaks down why offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick is likely to put the bulk of snaps in the hands of just a select few. With massive yardage departed through the exits of Parker Kingston, Chase Roberts, and Carsen Ryan, the spotlight turns to the new receiver hierarchy—Jojo Phillips, Kyler Kasper, Legend Glasker, and Reggie Frischknecht emerge as the leading candidates. Hatch explores whether younger options like Tiger Bachmeier and Tei Nacua can force their way into the mix, or if injury is the only plausible path for deeper rotation for the BYU Cougars. The tight end duo of Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga features heavily in the forecasted scheme, raising the question: can BYU maximize offensive efficiency with fewer playmakers but greater chemistry?

Treyson Bourguet, BYU’s backup quarterback, has taken social media by storm with his daily “Players of the Day” recognitions—an initiative aimed at increasing morale and spotlighting unsung contributors on both sides of the ball. Bourguet peels back the curtain on his motivation, describing how his journey from Western Michigan to Brigham Young University, driven by faith and self-discovery, has shaped his leadership style. He emphasizes how his vantage point as a backup quarterback allows him to notice every effort, from standout defenders to specialists grinding through tough practices. In his exclusive interview, Bourguet highlights Keanu Tanuvasa’s relentless intensity and Bear Bachmeier’s rapid growth under center, offering fans insight into the team’s tone-setters as camp concludes.

Health headlines define a major milestone for BYU, as the Cougars exit training camp without a season-ending injury for the second straight year. Hatch credits associate AD Coleby Clawson and Dr. Skyler Mayne for harnessing sports science and rigorous conditioning to optimize athlete performance and prevent overloads during the grueling preseason, underscoring the importance of keeping key players ready for Utah Tech and beyond. With the combination of a streamlined receiver corps, a motivated locker room, and a full-strength roster, BYU seeks to defy lingering doubts and set the stage for a successful campaign. Can this formula deliver big wins in the Big 12, or will the narrow rotation be tested sooner than expected?

The BYU football program signals their intent for a Big 12 championship and a long-awaited College Football Playoff breakthrough, riding high on confidence as camp wraps up. Can Bear Bachmeier’s leap at quarterback and the emergence of fresh faces propel Kalani Sitake’s squad through their toughest test yet? Veteran leadership is everywhere—on both sides of the ball—and expectations in Provo have never been higher. The national media are taking notice too, slotting Brigham Young University 14th in the AP Top-25 preseason poll, the second-highest spot in program history.

Jake Hatch recaps training camp’s key moments, highlighting how the BYU Cougars' 2026 recruiting class—possibly the best in school history—is already making its mark. Freshmen like Braxton Lindsey and Legend Glasker have turned heads, challenging upperclassmen and solidifying roles in a roster built for depth and athleticism. The offensive storylines center on Bachmeier’s rapid development, LJ Martin’s steady presence at running back, and a wide receiver corps that’s quickly silenced doubters with standouts JoJo Phillips, Kyler Kasper, Reggie Frischknecht, and Glasker himself. The offensive line, although experienced, remains under the microscope for its chemistry and ability to function as a unit after key departures; the spotlight is on Bruce Mitchell, Andrew Gentry, and promising sophomore Paki Finau.

On defense, newcomers like Lindsey at rush end are aiding veterans such as Keanu Tanuvasa and Justin Kirkland. Isaiah Glasker’s all-business return at linebacker after injury signals a hunger to not only lead but climb NFL draft boards, taking cues from former teammate Jack Kelly’s success with the New York Giants. Depth at cornerback poses the main question mark—can emerging names like Jayven Williams and Kevin Doe bolster a unit headlined by Tre Alexander and Evan Johnson? Meanwhile, special teams look poised for a strong season with Matthias Dunn at kicker, Fuller Schurtz punting, and dynamic options in the return game, all under Justin Ena’s direction.

Adding intrigue, former college baseball standout Fisher Ingersoll joins the wide receiver rotation, bringing athleticism and a fresh perspective. He shares insight on his transition back to football, the challenges of adapting, and the competitive spirit fueling BYU’s position groups.

This episode offers an in-depth preview of the Cougars’ strengths, remaining questions, and the mindset setting the tone for what could be a historic season in Provo. Will BYU’s proven mix of experience, rising talent, and singular focus finally deliver their shot at college football’s biggest stage?
