Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

BYU football gears up for their first Big 12 conference test of the season against the Arizona Wildcats, determined to keep Kalani Sitake’s flawless 5-0 record in the matchup intact. With Arizona’s players, led by quarterback Noah Fifita, vocalizing their motivation for payback after last year’s double-overtime heartbreaker, the stakes soar for both programs. Will BYU’s home field advantage at LaVell Edwards Stadium once again tip the balance, or can Arizona finally end the streak and launch its own Big 12 campaign in style?

The conversation focused on the unique storylines that shape the BYU-Arizona rivalry, including Sitake’s debut as head coach in the 2016 season opener against the Wildcats and wild finishes that have defined recent meetings. One concept discussed was the importance of BYU’s crowd energy, which players and coaches credit as a legitimate factor, especially after the 41-19 blowout in Provo in 2024. Injury news also took center stage: with Raider Damuni’s injury prognosis and return timeline described as miraculous with Tommy Prassas and others ready to step up at safety, depth and adaptability remain themes for the defense. Insight was shared on Isaiah Glasker’s expected return, ongoing evaluations for Sione Moa, and Jonathan Kabeya’s progress as the Cougars navigate early-season challenges.

A key theme that emerged was BYU’s preparation mindset, with Sitake and players emphasizing respect for every opponent and the need to fine-tune execution, especially when transitioning from FCS competition to the rigors of Big 12 play. The discussion explored the strategic role of Kelly Poppinga (“K-Pop”), and how coaching adjustments impact the team’s performance and communication—touching on the dynamics of in-person sideline leadership versus coaching from the box. Preston Rex shared insights about his position switch from free safety to running back and the “all-for-one” attitude in BYU’s locker room, while Hunter Clegg offered details about his move to boundary backer and the depth that powers BYU’s “front office” mentality on the O-line, as described by Kyle Sfarcioc.

Several points were raised, including Arizona’s retooled secondary, the challenge of containing Fifita’s dual-threat abilities, and how disruptive defenses test the Cougars’ offensive strategy. With Big 12 implications running high and both programs hungry for an early-season statement, this episode breaks down everything fans need to know ahead of BYU’s showdown with Arizona and what it could mean for the conference race ahead.

BYU football sent a powerful statement with a dominant 63-7 victory over Utah Tech, sparking optimism about a potential Big 12 Conference title charge and a run at the College Football Playoff. With Bear Bachmeier’s improved speed at quarterback, Legend Glasker’s record-setting debut hat trick, and Cannon DeVries’ electrifying all-purpose impact, Jake Hatch breaks down why the BYU Cougars look every bit like a veteran-laden squad ready to be hunted this season. Key moments included the first-string offense putting the game away in the first half and the defense unveiling an aggressive new identity under Kelly Poppinga, blending the coverage discipline of Jay Hill and the attacking style reminiscent of Bronco Mendenhall. Standouts like Kendall Wall emerged as playmakers on defense, while freshmen Journee Tonga and Devaughn Eka flashed as the Cougars displayed depth across the roster.

However, the celebration is tempered by two significant injuries. Running back Sione Moa left with what could be as a potentially multi-week setback—especially concerning given his “thunder and lightning” partnership with LJ Martin. The offensive backfield will now rely more on seasoned backs like Preston Rex and promising freshmen, but questions remain about pass protection with Moa out. On defense, free safety Raider Damuni suffered a hyperextended knee in a friendly fire incident with Keanu Tanuvasa. While the injury isn’t believed to be an ACL tear, BYU faces a crucial depth test at safety, with Tommy Prassas likely stepping up. Will the secondary and running back group withstand these challenges and keep BYU’s championship ambitions intact?

With the Utah Tech “preseason” tune-up in the books, the focus shifts entirely to a pivotal clash against Arizona. The Wildcats, led by standout QB Noah Fifita, are seeking revenge after last year's double-OT thriller. Jake Hatch previews the matchup, exploring the quarterback duel between Bachmeier and Fifita, critical battles in the trenches, and why this early Big 12 showdown could determine BYU’s perceived legitimacy as a conference contender. Can the Cougars deliver against a vengeful Arizona squad and prove they’re built for the long haul? Subscribe now for in-depth coverage as BYU enters a defining stretch of its season.

Welcome into another edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! The No. 14 BYU Cougars put on an absolute clinic under the lights at LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday night, dismantling the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a dominant 63-7 rout to kick off the home slate in style.  On today’s episode, we break down every angle of this explosive 56-point victory.

We start with a surgical performance from quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who carved up the Trailblazers' defense with 198 yards and three touchdowns—all efficiently delivered in a masterclass first half.

Next, we spotlight an unforgettable collegiate debut from Legend Glasker. Glasker put on a show for the Provo faithful, hauling in multiple touchdown receptions and finding the end zone on the ground in a dazzling multi-touchdown performance. We also highlight Cannon DeVries, who continued to prove why he is a multi-phase weapon for Kevin Young's squad, impacting the game dynamically on special teams and defense.

However, it wasn't a completely spotless night for the Cougars. We dive into the unfortunate injury to safety Raider Damuni, looking at what his absence could mean moving forward. Plus, we react directly to head coach Kalani Sitake’s postgame comments revealing that a few banged-up Cougars could potentially miss next week’s massive early-season showdown against the Arizona Wildcats at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Tune in as we analyze the stats, hand out game balls, and get you fully prepared for Big 12 conference-adjacent action ahead! Make sure to subscribe, rate, and review Locked On Cougars on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform!

Big 12 teams face early-season pressure as Baylor preps for a high-stakes showdown against Auburn in the Aflac Kickoff. The group debates talent disparities, the impact of new coaching staffs, and whether last year’s stats offer any real insight for fans expecting a breakout performance.

The conversation focused on Oklahoma State’s revamped lineup, raising questions about defensive improvement and the upside of bringing in nearly an entire staff from North Texas. UCF’s Alonzo Barnett emerges as a sleeper to watch, while the hosts debate whether parity in the Big 12 will help or hurt the conference’s playoff hopes. BYU football sets the stage for a season with sky-high stakes, eyeing an 11-1 regular season that could launch the program into the College Football Playoff conversation. Jake Hatch breaks down why he predicts BYU can conquer powerhouses like Notre Dame at LaVell Edwards Stadium, even if they sacrifice a heated road rivalry game at Utah. With the Big 12 title game and national spotlight in play, the episode spotlights how the BYU Cougars’ roster is constructed for both explosive results and record-breaking performances.

LJ Martin headlines the offensive firepower, with the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year positioned to become BYU’s all-time leading rusher and a legitimate Doak Walker Award contender, should he stay healthy. Bear Bachmeier’s arm brings the promise of a high-octane passing attack, potentially topping 3,500 yards if BYU’s offense fully clicks. Newcomer Legend Glasker draws attention as a freshman starter with game-changing abilities, while Kyler Kasper and JoJo Phillips round out a dynamic receiving corps. Jake Hatch also projects Walker Lyons as Bear’s go-to target on crucial downs, reinforcing the depth and versatility of Aaron Roderick’s offense.

On defense, the Cougars are set to unleash Isaiah Glasker, named by Jake Hatch as his defensive MVP pick, back from injury with something to prove. The addition of Justin Kirkland at nose tackle could be the key to unlocking more sacks and freeing up Keanu Tanuvasa and BYU’s edge rushers for big plays. Listeners get answers to burning questions about defensive coordinator changes, the development of Kelly Poppinga’s linebacker-based schemes, and injury updates for key contributors like Jovesa Damuni.

Fan mail sparks lively debates—should Kalani Sitake prioritize style points and run up the score, or keep it classy? Will backup players like Preston Rex and Sione Moa step into significant roles? Can BYU’s defense make history as its best ever? Jake Hatch covers BYU’s season opener against Utah Tech, highlighting key storylines from roster depth evaluations to the must-watch battle for WR1. The road to the Big 12 title and playoff glory begins now—will the Cougars seize their moment?

BYU men's basketball stands at the brink of another breakthrough, with Kevin Young’s squad reshaping expectations across the Big 12 and beyond. Can incoming star Bruce Branch III match AJ Dybantsa’s legacy as a projected top NBA pick, and how high is this program’s new floor? Jake Hatch examines ESPN’s latest projections, which put BYU’s ceiling at 26 wins and a Sweet 16 appearance—despite continued uncertainties surrounding key roster pieces like Jaxon Kohler and Jakub Urbaniak. Even with questions at center and that one open scholarship slot, the national spotlight remains fixed on BYU, thanks to relentless recruiting, deep roster talent, and a Big 12 schedule that all but assures NCAA Tournament relevance.

Hatch highlights the BYU Cougars’ incredible evolution from WCC afterthoughts to coveted Big 12 contenders, dissecting why experts are bullish on BYU even in a fiercely competitive league. Listeners get a detailed analysis of the squad’s depth, from Robert Wright III’s return and the eligibility rollercoaster with Kohler, to the versatile scoring touch of Branch III and influx of other blue-chip talents like Collin Chandler and Jake Wahlin. The segment explores what makes BYU’s ceiling so much higher this season, the potential pitfalls if injury or eligibility issues emerge, and the unthinkable prospect of snaring multiple future No. 1 NBA picks under Young’s leadership. Is this the start of the most dynamic stretch in BYU basketball history?

The conversation then pivots to football as Hatch welcomes Utah Tech head coach Lance Anderson for an exclusive inside look at Saturday’s matchup. Anderson provides unique perspective on facing BYU in Provo, sharing what makes Kalani Sitake’s teams so formidable—physicality, depth, and a fiercely competitive recruiting footprint. Anderson, a key recruiter from his Stanford days, offers personal insight into what he saw in former recruits and now-BYU stars Bear Bachmeier and reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin, recalling their families’ athletic prowess, academic drive, and versatility. The discussion also explores the realities of the transfer portal era, the challenge of coaching at the FCS level, and Utah Tech’s aspirations in a loaded Big Sky Conference.

Don’t miss this comprehensive breakdown of BYU’s roster construction, championship ambitions, and the inside stories behind roster building on both sides of the gridiron. Will BYU basketball live up to sky-high expectations—and can Utah Tech make a statement against a national power?

Kalani Sitake’s future at BYU remains the talk of college football as his coaching success attracts interest from programs the ilk of USC and Penn State. Fresh off a season highlighted by double-digit wins and an enhanced long-term deal, the BYU Cougars’ head coach finds himself in the national spotlight again—with major outlets wondering if his next move is coming sooner rather than later. Jake Hatch unpacks the latest Adam Rittenberg piece, exploring why Sitake’s West Coast ties, reputation as an elite recruiter, and proven results make him an appealing target for schools with bigger budgets and grander ambitions. Is BYU’s recent decision to have Sitake report to a university vice president instead of athletic director Brian Santiago fueling tension and speculation about his long-term commitment? With boosters stepping up to increase support and rumors swirling about resource allocation, Hatch questions whether the Cougars can keep their man or if the siren call of Big Ten riches—and programs eager to throw money and resources at their next coach—will prove too tempting.

The podcast takes a closer look at BYU’s evolving defensive identity under new coordinator Kelly Poppinga. Poppinga introduces the “6 Seconds of Havoc” philosophy, explaining that the average play lasts just six seconds and he expects maximum disruption every snap. Hatch highlights how playmaking isn’t only about sacks—forcing turnovers, limiting gains on crucial first downs, and putting offenses under relentless pressure will define BYU’s defensive brand this year. As the Cougars open the season against FCS opponent Utah Tech, the coaching staff is demanding every player on the depth chart embrace the havoc mantra, regardless of experience or role. Hatch connects this renewed focus to BYU’s ambition to contend with college football’s elite, emphasizing why defensive buy-in will matter even more when Power 4 matchups and star quarterbacks like Arizona’s Noah Fifita are on the schedule.

Linebacker depth is another storyline, as Miles Hall joins the show to offer an insider’s perspective. A St. George native with personal ties to Utah Tech and former teammate Prince Zombo Jr., Hall details the camaraderie and competitiveness of a linebacker unit featuring six players with Power 4 starts. He shares what it’s like to excel on special teams, the challenge of preparing for familiar teammates during camp, and how “fresh legs” will keep BYU’s defense physical deep into games. Hall also reflects on overcoming injuries, the support of his Southern Utah roots, and his excitement to get back under the lights—a sentiment echoing through a program ready for a new season and determined to prove its staying power on the national stage.

Lane Kiffin ignites chaos in college football as he maneuvers to bring NFL-caliber talent back to LSU, prompting a mutiny among SEC coaches and sparking fears of a potential conference boycott or outirght expulsion from the Southeastern Conference. The Big 12 Squad dives headfirst into the high-stakes drama: Could LSU actually find itself on the SEC’s chopping block? With the NCAA’s eligibility rules under scrutiny and coaches like Kiffin pushing boundaries for a competitive edge, the lines between amateur and professional football grow increasingly blurred. The conversation intensifies around the 5th-year eligibility debate, the SEC’s shifting stance on returning pros, and the financial incentives drawing players back to campus. As coaches weigh lawsuits and player boycotts, is the very identity of college football in jeopardy?

Shifting gears to the Big 12, TCU’s season opener against North Carolina exposes cracks in the Horned Frogs’ foundation. Despite high hopes and a recent contract extension for Sonny Dykes, TCU stumbles with costly penalties, key turnovers, and a lack of discipline. Discussion centers around whether Dykes can re-energize the fanbase—or if a midseason exit would be met with shrugs. Jayden Craig’s debut sparks questions about quarterback readiness and the potential for a rebound, while North Carolina’s defense earns unexpected praise. Panelists examine how locker room dysfunction and off-field distractions, including false media scandals and hospitalizations, impact on-field performance.

Broader themes emerge as the crew evaluates the current landscape of college football. Week 0 and Week 1 slates fall flat without marquee Power Four matchups, leaving fans underwhelmed and stadiums, like USC’s, littered with empty seats. The group points to weakened non-conference schedules—complicated by SEC and Power Four cancellations—as a key culprit behind the lack of early-season excitement. Meanwhile, the rise of FCS football provides a surprising source of thrills, with former Power Four players boosting lower-level programs and delivering nail-biting finishes.

The conversation closes on the impact of the transfer portal—roster churn offers hope for rapid turnarounds but challenges the tradition of rooting for multi-year stars. Can new revenue-sharing models stabilize player movement and restore college football’s luster? As the Big 12 Squad looks ahead to a loaded Week 3 slate, listeners are left to ponder: Is college football entering a new era where tradition gives way to chaos, or will stability and star power soon return to Saturdays?

BYU football set the stage for a statement season opener against Utah Tech—will Kalani Sitake’s squad deliver the dominant start BYU fans expect, and how prepared is the team for a looming revenge showdown with Arizona? Jake Hatch breaks down why the BYU Cougars should be able to “name their score” against Utah Tech and what BYU’s coaching staff, led by offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick, genuinely hopes to extract from this lopsided matchup. Clean execution, disciplined game prep, and establishing a competitive standard are top of mind as the veteran offense—featuring Bear Bachmeier at quarterback and LJ Martin in the backfield—looks to sharpen its rhythm before the competition gets far tougher.

The episode highlights Preston Rex’s journey from free safety to running back, capturing his candid memories of the previous BYU vs. Utah Tech meeting and the learning curve since switching positions. Rex reflects on his early struggles fresh off his mission—letting up a touchdown and dropping an interception—and how time, coaching, and mentorship from teammates like Sione Moe and LJ Martin have fueled his development. Insightful discussion centers on Rex’s expanded grasp of offensive schemes, pass protection responsibilities, and the family-like dynamic in the running back room. The prospect of seeing not just Rex and Martin, but also up-and-coming backs like Devaughn Eka, Journee Tonga, Lucky Finau, and Logan Payne take snaps if the score gets out of hand sets the stage for depth pieces to shine under the Lavell Edwards Stadium lights.

Jake Hatch also takes listeners behind the scenes on the topic of jersey sponsorships, clarifying recent debates sparked by BYU Olympic sports uniforms featuring BYU Continuing Education patches. Armed with inside info, Jake Hatch explains how BYU Continuing Education operates as a self-sufficient entity, countering rival fan claims that tithing dollars from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are subsidizing Brigham Young University athletics or sponsorship deals—an important talking point ahead of another rivalry season. The pod serves up a blend of practical insights and fan ammunition for any water cooler debate.

Locked On Cougars is your go-to for comprehensive BYU football coverage, from strategic objectives vs. Utah Tech to the anticipation and preparation for critical upcoming early season games against Arizona and TCU.

BYU Basketball’s roster strategy takes center stage as the Cougars pursue Serbian 7-footer Petar Ostojic, while top prospect Xavion Staton heads elsewhere. With questions swirling about why BYU would part ways with one project big man only to seek another, Jake Hatch breaks down the program’s recruiting philosophy and examines how the eligibility of Jaxon Kohler and European prospect Jakub Urbaniak could dramatically alter the team’s frontcourt plans this season. Is BYU prepared for a worst-case scenario, or could their calculated risks translate to on-court success? Jake Hatch explores whether international recruits will truly have the time to develop, especially if the NCAA eligibility saga sidelines proven contributors.

Switching to football, Herriman High’s electric running back Felisi Filipe thrusts himself into the spotlight after a string of standout performances, earning his first Power Four offer from the BYU football program. Jake Hatch analyzes Filipe’s skill set—highlighting his vision, balance, physicality, and fit with BYU’s zone run schemes—while drawing comparisons to past Cougars like Tyler Allgeier and Jamaal Williams. With 684 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in only 2.5 games, Felipe’s rapid rise sparks key questions: Can Kalani Sitake and BYU continue their streak of turning overlooked backs into NFL-caliber playmakers? Will Felipe’s recruiting profile soar as other Power Four programs take notice?

Beyond the headline sports, BYU women’s cross-country surges into the national conversation with a #4 preseason ranking, trailing only perennial powerhouses NC State, New Mexico, and Big 12 rival Iowa State. On the men’s side, Ed Eyestone’s squad secures a top-10 preseason debut, while Oklahoma State, Iowa State, and Colorado bolster the league’s cross-country pedigree. Meanwhile, BYU men’s golf lands at #23 in Golfweek’s preseason poll, as new head coach Todd Miller inherits a roster stacked with talent, including preseason All-American Kihei Akina.

From hard-hitting recruiting insights to inside looks at national rankings, this episode puts every Cougar fan in the know. Will BYU basketball’s big man gamble pay off? Can Filipe carry his prep dominance to Provo’s gridiron? Don’t miss Jake Hatch's comprehensive analysis and the latest on BYU Athletics’ rising stars and preseason momentum.
