Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

BYU football has their sights set on joining the national college football elite, but Kalani Sitake’s pointed plea for enhanced resources is raising eyebrows. With The Athletic reporting that BYU’s roster spending sits at $20–$25 million—far below Big 12 rivals like Texas Tech ($38–$42 million) and below middling Power 4 programs like Nebraska ($31–$35 million)—Sitake's comment seem to say he believes that to truly compete on the national stage, Brigham Young University must boost its financial investment. Jake Hatch breaks down just how far the Cougars have come, touting a 23-4 record and consecutive seasons of College Football Playoff contention, while making it clear that continued success hinges on increased support from boosters and the university. Does BYU have what it takes to keep pace with college football’s arms race, or will limited resources cap their ambitions?

Jake Hatch offers insightful analysis into the figures and context behind BYU’s standing, referencing programs such as Ohio State, Oregon, and LSU that are already pushing or surpassing the $50 million threshold and reaping rewards on the gridiron. Sitake’s message is clear: the BYU Cougars don’t need to match the stratospheric spending of national powers, but they must at least approach the investment levels of their conference rivals—namely Texas Tech—to challenge for top honors. Mid-tier programs outspending BYU are finding ways to transform their fortunes, prompting fans and administration to consider if holding steady financially will limit the Cougars’ progress. The episode questions whether smart allocation and on-field results can make up the difference, or if new leadership under BYU vice president Keith Vorkink can catalyze lasting change.

The spotlight then shifts to BYU’s defensive resurgence, as Hatch sits down with starting end Hunter Clegg. Clegg reflects on his own development, the influence of coaches Kelly Poppinga and Chad Kauha’aha'a, and the defensive line’s youth and upside. With Tausili Akana’s standout 2.5-sack game against Arizona drawing attention, Clegg insists the unit’s ceiling is even higher as they prepare for their first road matchup versus Colorado State and dual-threat quarterback Hauss Hejny.

Mailbag questions engage with hot-button topics including Justin Kirkland’s defensive role, the condition of Lavell Edwards Stadium’s turf, injury trends, and offensive line concerns. Hatch addresses rumors swirling around Legend Glasker and reviews the history of BYU’s break from the Mountain West. Join Locked On Cougars for a comprehensive, passionate look at BYU football’s quest for sustained greatness amid rising stakes and shifting landscapes.

BYU football heads to Fort Collins carrying College Football Playoff hype and a 1-0 Big 12 record, ready to take on Jim Mora’s upstart Colorado State Rams. Will Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin continue BYU’s statement run, or can Hauss Hejny and an ambitious Colorado State squad pull off a program-defining upset? This matchup isn’t just about standings—it’s a meeting of two teams aiming to redefine their conference and national trajectories.

Christian Rauh and Jake Hatch dissect the renewed rivalry and its playoff implications, examining how the BYU Cougars' comprehensive performance against Arizona has shifted the perception of the Big 12 race. The discussion highlights Bear Bachmeier’s stellar quarterback play and his rapport with LJ Martin, whose physical running style has become central to BYU’s offense. Defensively, Jake spotlights transfer linebacker Cade Uluave’s game-changing presence, emphasizing the need for BYU to contain Colorado State’s ground attack.

On the Rams’ side, standout transfer additions Mel Brown and Dorel Robinson offer a dynamic one-two punch, while linebacker Oumar Diomande’s knack for timely turnovers makes him a defensive cornerstone. Christian Rauh questions whether Colorado State’s consistency across all phases can close the gap with a top-ranked opponent, especially in the electric home environment at Canvas Stadium. The potential X-factors? CSU’s inside knowledge from former BYU staffer Matt Mitchell and linebacker Matt Ah You, providing tactical insight against familiar faces.

The conversation also takes a sharp look at conference dynamics, referencing close battles Oregon State has had against Big 12 contenders in Texas Tech and Houston, and considering whether Colorado State can emulate those near-upsets. Insights into NIL investments and player retention offer a broader view of the college football landscape. Both hosts weigh in on whether BYU will cover the 17.5-point spread or if Colorado State’s grit will keep things close.

Ultimately, this in-depth preview sets the scene for a pivotal game with postseason implications, key player matchups, and the potential for narrative-shifting surprises. BYU aims to maintain its dominance, while Colorado State seeks respect and a breakthrough moment under Jim Mora Jr. A must-listen for fans tracking the Big 12, Pac-12, and college football’s developing power structure.

Utah’s golf landscape is on the verge of transformation as the Utah Section PGA partners with the Larry H. Miller Group for Utah Youth Sports Giving Day—an initiative raising up to $150,000 in matching funds to propel the next generation of golfers. Will this push help the BYU men’s and women’s golf programs continue their ascent and keep Utah talent competing on the national stage? Devin Dehlin, Utah Section PGA head, reveals how these donations will directly expand junior access, provide equipment, and support vital programs like Drive, Chip, and Putt and the Itty Bitty Tour for ages 4-6, fostering young golfers’ development from their first swing to elite college competition.

Dehlin highlights the unprecedented roster depth now anchoring BYU golf. Homegrown stars such as Kihei Akina—recent Walker Cup participant and Utah Open winner—alongside Cooper Jones, Peter Kim, and others, trace their roots back to Utah’s junior leagues. With 8 of BYU’s 10 men’s roster spots and nearly half the women’s team filled by local standouts, Utah golf has shifted from relying on national recruits to homegrown dominance. The discussion explores the influence of local mentors like the Summerhays family and the impact of coaches like Todd Miller—son of golf legend Johnny Miller—who brings both experience and a famous pedigree to the program.

Additional insights cover the post-pandemic golf surge, the growing involvement of families and women, and the logistical challenges of making golf accessible amid rising costs and packed courses. Dehlin underscores the importance of lowering entry barriers to ensure every aspiring golfer has a shot, emphasizing how community donations can double their impact through the matching program.

Can community support meet the $150,000 goal and set up Utah’s young talent for lasting success? Find out how you can join the drive and help fuel the Cougars’ and Utah’s path to golfing greatness at utahpga.com.

Classic Mountain West tensions resurface as the BYU Cougars prepare to face the Colorado State Rams for the first time in 16 years—a game loaded with history, rivalry, and significance. Will this long-awaited rematch redefine both programs’ trajectories? Jake Hatch sets the stage for a throwback Saturday night in Fort Collins, revisiting the seismic conference realignment of 2010, the Mountain West’s hardline response to Brigham Young University’s independence plans, and the dramatic vows taken by programs like Colorado State at the time to never play BYU again. With time having healed old wounds, the Rams welcome the No. 11-ranked BYU football program to Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium—now officially hosting the stadium’s highest-profile opponent in its history. Jake Hatch examines why Colorado State reversed course, the financial and competitive incentives on the line, and what this means for both sets of fans hungry for a nostalgic yet high-stakes meeting.

Recruiting buzz grows as BYU secures a crucial late addition to the 2027 class—Ridgeline High’s Owen Leishman. Projected as a fast, physical linebacker with notable size (6'3", 215 lbs), Leishman’s commitment offers intriguing possibilities for Kalani Sitake and Kelly Poppinga’s defensive scheme. Jake Hatch analyzes Leishman’s multi-positional athleticism, highlighting a 4.59 forty-yard dash, impressive 100m speed, and a tape filled with tight end flashes that underscore his power, agility, and potential to thrive as a Power 4 athlete. What does this addition signal for BYU’s recruiting philosophy? With other targets like Filisi Filipe on the radar, listeners get a rundown on emerging prospects and the qualities BYU prioritizes for long-term success.

Hoops excitement builds as BYU basketball hears the national buzz—Rob Wright III lands a coveted preseason All-American nod from Blue Ribbon Yearbook, marking him as the Big 12’s lone representative on the first team. Jake Hatch details why Kevin Young calls Wright "the best point guard in the nation" and how his growth, complemented by transfer additions like Bruce Branch III, Collin Chandler, and potentially Jaxon Kohler (pending eligibility), could propel the Cougars to Sweet 16 expectations. The episode also highlights ESPN’s decision to feature another Big Monday showdown at the Marriott Center against national powerhouse Arizona, recalling last year’s epic comeback attempt and setting the stakes for a marquee late-season clash.

Can BYU football make a statement in its return clash with Colorado State? Will Owen Leishman become a centerpiece of the Cougars’ defense? And is this the season Rob Wright leads BYU basketball on a March run? Jake Hatch delivers everything Cougar fans need to know to get ready for a pivotal sports weekend.

BYU football enters their road clash with Colorado State as decisive favorites, but could a familiar face on the Rams’ sideline alter the expected narrative? Former BYU offensive analyst Matt Mitchell—now Colorado State’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator—brings deep institutional knowledge of Aaron Roderick's offense and Bear Bachmeier’s tendencies. Kalani Sitake openly addresses the unique chess match this presents: Will Mitchell’s inside perspective help Colorado State engineer an upset, or is BYU’s superior talent and preparation poised to prevail? The strategic intrigue is heightened further by the Rams’ head coach Jim Mora and the presence of Matt Ah You, another figure with ties to Brigham Young University, adding yet another layer to the matchup.

Jake Hatch breaks down the BYU Cougars’ latest depth chart and injury developments, with a particular focus on Siale Esera's absence at linebacker following the Arizona contest. How does this impact BYU’s defensive rotation, and is the squad’s deep pool of talent—featuring standouts like Nusi Taumoepeau, Braxton Lindsey, Isaiah Glasker and Cade Uluave—enough to maintain dominance in the heart of the defense? Hatch also zeroes in on emerging running backs Journee Tonga and Devaughn Eka, both rapidly climbing the ladder in BYU’s rotation, underscoring the program’s continued success recruiting Southern California standouts and developing talent that's ready to step in when called upon.

Key discussion points include adjustments BYU made against Arizona, such as deploying Faletau Satuala in versatile defensive roles and shifting to nickel packages with hybrid players like Jayven Williams and Cannon DeVries. Insights from Kalani Sitake offer listeners a window into how the Cougars’ coaching staff adapts schemes based on opponent strengths, and how the current roster’s leadership is shaping team identity during a critical early-season stretch. The episode touches on Sitake’s memories from past BYU-Colorado State battles, the intensity of the Fort Collins atmosphere, and the anticipation of renewing a once-fierce regional rivalry at Canvas Stadium.

With BYU’s Big 12 aspirations growing and every contest carrying increased significance, Hatch raises the stakes: Could Matt Mitchell’s presence truly tilt preparations in Colorado State’s favor, or will BYU’s disciplined approach and multifaceted roster shine through? Don’t miss this comprehensive preview packed with roster insights, player spotlights, and the tactical nuances that could define BYU’s path forward.

BYU football dismantled the narrative of poor in-game coaching, surging past Arizona with a masterclass in halftime adjustments and disciplined execution. After a sluggish first half that saw Noah Fifita and the Arizona Wildcats control the tempo, BYU’s staff—led by Kalani Sitake and defensive leaders like Kelly Pupinga—responded with swift, strategic changes. The booth and sideline communication resulted in a dramatically improved pass rush discipline, containing Fifita and reversing the game's momentum in the final two quarters. Jake Hatch details how BYU’s switch from passive 3-3-5 schemes to more aggressive alignments, combined with sharper defensive gap integrity, helped bottle up Arizona’s previously potent attack.

On offense, Jake Hatch breaks down Bear Bachmeier’s pivotal 61-yard strike to Legend Glasker—highlighting not just individual brilliance but well-timed play-calling from Aaron Roderick. The offensive line, often a punching bag for early criticism, earned praise for weathering relentless blitzes and keeping the Cougars’ game plan alive. Key contributors like LJ Martin, who sparked the second half with dynamic runs, and Kyler Kasper, who notched his first two career touchdowns, illustrated the depth of BYU’s offensive weapons. Rising talents like Braxton Lindsey and Paki Finau also earned special mention for their physical play and maturity, setting the tone for a team poised to maintain its place among the nation's best.

The conversation turns to “style points” as Jake Hatch explains why Kalani Sitake’s decision to kneel near the goal line with the victory secure was less about optics and more about preserving sportsmanship and solidifying peer respect across college football. Despite some fans clamoring for a bigger margin to impress selection committees, BYU’s vault to #11 in the AP poll proves their substance trumps flash—at least for now. Sitake’s philosophy, honed over a decade, puts winning and reputation above chasing unnecessary points, reinforcing why his players and coaching peers trust his leadership.

Rounding out the episode, the “Big 12 3 Up, 3 Down” segment recaps pivotal conference storylines: Oklahoma State’s stunning upset over Oregon, Utah’s dominating SEC performance against Arkansas, Kansas State’s rapid development under Collin Klein, and pressing vulnerabilities for Texas Tech, Iowa State, Kansas, and UCF. With BYU now standing as the Big 12’s highest-ranked contender, Jake Hatch asks the hard question—can the Cougars sustain this momentum and overcome a gauntlet of hungry conference rivals? Get all the strategic insights, player evaluations, and Big 12 power rankings in this essential Locked On Cougars breakdown.

BYU football delivers a statement win over the Arizona Wildcats, showcasing grit, adaptability, and coaching excellence on their home turf at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Down at halftime and facing early adversity, the BYU Cougars responded with a dominant second-half performance that extended Kalani Sitake’s perfect record against Arizona to 6-0. The conversation focused on the storyline of a true “tale of two halves,” emphasizing how BYU overcame a slow start behind a revitalized offensive attack and a defense that pitched a shutout after the break.

One concept discussed was Bear Bachmeier’s growth as BYU’s quarterback; his mobility, improved decision-making, and three-touchdown performance—featuring scores by Kyler Casper and Reggie Frischknecht—gave the offense renewed life when it mattered. On the ground, LJ Martin shook off a quiet first half to amass 98 rushing yards on 20 carries, helping BYU sustain drives and command the clock. The discussion explored play-calling evolution as Aaron Roderick shifted the game plan, dialing up aggressive vertical plays such as Legend Glasker’s explosive catch to seize momentum.

A key theme that emerged was the defense’s second-half transformation. BYU, led by Tausili Akana’s 2.5 sacks, consistently pressured Arizona’s Noah Fifita and forced crucial stops, limiting the Wildcats to just over 100 yards after halftime. Several points were raised, including the staff’s halftime adjustments and Kelly Poppinga’s approach as defensive coordinator in just his second game. Tommy Prassas' pivotal fourth-down stop and team discipline in late-game situations sealed the Wildcats’ fate as BYU leaned into its identity as a methodical, hard-hitting squad capable of closing out tight games like a heavyweight fighter leaning on an opponent.

The discussion wrapped with engaging questions: Can BYU’s recipe for halftime adjustments and depth of playmakers spark a breakthrough season in the Big 12? Will the Cougars’ style points and second-half surges convince pollsters and fans alike? This episode captures the passion, tactics, and player development fueling BYU’s promising start—don’t miss this comprehensive breakdown of how persistence, leadership, and tactical tweaks carved out an unforgettable win.
