Locked On Cougars - Daily Podcast On BYU Cougars Football & Basketball

Welcome into another edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! We are shifting our focus to the hardwood today as the BYU basketball program officially drops its 2026-27 roster. While the excitement surrounding head coach Kevin Young's squad is palpable, the biggest storyline centers around Jaxon Kohler. We break down what having the talented big man on the roster means for the Cougars, even as his ultimate on-court eligibility hangs in the balance amidst an ongoing legal battle playing out in a California court room.

On today's show, we examine how Kohler’s skill set—including his inside presence and perimeter shooting—could elevate BYU's frontcourt in a rugged Big 12 conference, and what the timeline looks like for a final resolution on his status.

From there, we zoom out to the macro landscape of college athletics as we navigate Year 1 of the landmark House settlement era. We look at the numbers surrounding institutional revenue sharing, discussing how much money schools have distributed under the cap. We analyze where BYU fits into this financial arms race, whether the Cougars are among the programs pushing right up to the maximum cap limits, and how athletic departments across the country are adjusting to this new economic reality.

Tune in for all the roster analysis, legal updates, and financial breakdowns you need! Make sure to subscribe, rate, and review Locked On Cougars on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform.

BYU football chases a milestone as they travel to Fort Worth, determined to snap a 20-year losing streak against the TCU Horned Frogs in a matchup loaded with Big 12 implications. With running back LJ Martin leading one of college football’s most efficient ground games, can BYU use its veteran offensive line to finally conquer Amon G. Carter Stadium? Quarterback Bear Bachmeier’s improved arm strength and ability to hit deep shots raise questions about whether TCU’s secondary can withstand BYU’s balanced attack, especially with dynamic freshman Legend Glasker already threatening Austin Collie’s freshman receiving records.

Jake Hatch and Darrion Gray break down the key storylines, starting with the potential for a trap game: BYU’s historical struggles in Fort Worth and TCU’s recent players-only meeting set the stage for high emotions. They analyze how weather could impact run-heavy schemes, the significance of BYU’s right tackle Andrew Gentry’s injury, and the battle in the trenches as both teams look to establish dominance up front. Is Kalani Sitake’s defensive line ready for primetime, or can Jeremy Payne and the Horned Frogs finally reignite their struggling run game?

The hosts assess pressure mounting on TCU coach Sonny Dykes following fan frustration over penalty woes, close losses, and a lack of offensive consistency. Does Dykes have the formula to circle the wagons and rally behind quarterback Jaden Craig, who—after transferring from Harvard—has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled with turnovers against Power 4 competition? The debate turns to whether TCU’s defensive front, which excelled at stopping the run against UCF, can contain LJ Martin, or whether Martin will methodically wear down the Horned Frogs for another signature BYU victory.

Key matchups include BYU’s veteran defensive tackles Keanu Tanuvasa, Anisi Purcell, and Justin Kirkland against TCU’s offensive line, the ability of Bear Bachmeier to capitalize on play-action against TCU’s secondary, and whether wide receiver Jordan Dwyer—limited by injury but dangerous on deep balls—can provide the big plays TCU needs. Predictions favor BYU by double digits, but with TCU’s back against the wall and history on their side, could the Horned Frogs stun the Cougars?

Don’t miss this comprehensive, high-stakes preview filled with strategy, star power, and expert analysis from Jake Hatch and Darrion Gray on a contest that could shape the race in the Big 12.

BYU football chases a perfect 4-0 start Saturday in Fort Worth, TX, but must heed warning from 2023 when the TCU Horned Frogs dismantled them 44-11 in Fort Worth. With Kalani Sitake and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick at the helm, have the Cougars truly learned from that eye-opening defeat? Jake Hatch spotlights the stakes in this pivotal Big 12 meeting, recalling how an at-the-time unheralded Josh Hoover torched BYU’s defense in and why Jaden Craig, TCU’s Harvard transfer QB, could present a similarly dangerous challenge if BYU underestimates a Horned Frogs team desperate to rebound from early struggles. With TCU already holding players-only meetings and appearing desperate, is this a setup for another shocker?

Switching to hoops, Jake Hatch unpacks the ongoing Jaxon Kohler eligibility saga as the BYU men's basketball program navigates legal uncertainty and NCAA resistance. Kohler, alongside 70-plus plaintiffs—including former BYU big man Keba Keita—seeks a court injunction extending their eligibility after the NCAA’s controversial "5-for-5" eligibility rule and age-based requirements left 2022 class transfers in limbo. With the temporary restraining order extended and first exhibition games looming, Kohler remains eligible—at least for now. Legal experts and coaches like Rick Pitino argue the NCAA is on the losing side of this PR battle, and Jake Hatch lays out why a simple policy fix could prevent the season from being mired in endless court appeals.

The episode also dives into the future of the College Football Playoff: Will it expand to a 24-team format, or will entrenched interests and financial wrangling keep the structure at 12 (or maybe 16)? Jake Hatch provides insider context on the hurdles holding up expansion—including the potential elimination of Power 4 conference title games, alignment challenges between the SEC and Big Ten, and the all-important December 1 ESPN decision deadline. Could expanding the regular season to 10 Power Four opponents become the new standard, and what would that mean for BYU and the rest of the Big 12?

Packed with insight and energy, this episode is essential for Cougars fans following the latest gridiron battles, NCAA legal dramas, and dramatic playoff changes shaping the future of college sports.

Who truly runs the Big 12: the Utah Utes or BYU Cougars? The longstanding Holy War rivalry now carries national implications, as both programs look like legitimate Big 12 Conference frontrunners and serious contenders for the College Football Playoff. Jake Hatch and JT Wistrcill break down the state of the race, debating which team deserves to be called the Big 12’s best after four weeks and who boasts the more impressive résumé. Utah’s smothering defense, led by Devin Dampier, has made a statement by limiting opponents to just over 10 points per game, but BYU football counters with a signature victory over Arizona, featuring the stellar play of quarterback Bear Bachmeier and dynamic weapon Legend Glasker.

The hosts go in-depth on the critical factors behind each program’s early dominance. They weigh the impact of coaching philosophies, highlighting how Kalani Sitake and the post-Jay Hill BYU defense are mixing new blitz packages under Kelly Poppinga, while the Utes continue to thrive on toughness in the trenches. On offense, the evolution of both backfields sparks spirited discussion: Can Wayshawn Parker’s breakout season challenge LJ Martin’s awards and preseason hype? Which offensive line is truly the conference’s best, and how does high school football talent within Utah fuel both teams’ sustained success?

From analyzing Utah's third-quarter lulls to questioning Oklahoma State and Texas Tech’s staying power, JT Wistrcill and Jake Hatch map out plausible paths to the CFP for both Utah and Brigham Young University. Could both teams get in if they finish with just one loss each? The implications are massive, with the duo examining playoff committee perceptions—especially on the impact of non-conference tests like BYU’s showdown with Notre Dame and potential roadblocks like Houston or Cincinnati.

Listeners get tactical insights into the differences at quarterback—Bear Bachmeier’s downfield efficiency versus Devin Dampier’s game management—as well as wide receiver emergence that could rewrite the BYU record books. The show also highlights pivotal moments, such as controversial calls in recent Big 12 games and how officiating might affect the title hunt.

Don’t miss this comprehensive analysis of Utah’s and BYU’s rise, featuring in-state recruiting wins, evolving offensive strategies, and potential playoff scenarios. Will the Holy War determine who represents the Big 12 on college football’s biggest stage, or is there another contender poised to shake up the race?

BYU football has lept into the national spotlight as College Football Playoff contenders, but do playoff committee politics and SEC bias threaten to undo their hard work? Bear Bachmeier’s efficient quarterback play, ranking in the country’s top 25 in QBR, has helped launch BYU to a 3-0 record and a top-10 national ranking. However, the conversation explored how ESPN’s playoff projections set an incredibly high bar for Kalani SItake and the BYU Cougars, demanding a nearly perfect record amid skepticism about Big 12 strength and limited opportunities for ranked wins outside of major showdowns with Notre Dame and Utah.

One concept discussed was the persistent challenge posed by the College Football Playoff Committee’s alignment with media partners and the perception gap favoring SEC and Big Ten programs. Referencing recent AP poll discrepancies and controversial SEC rankings—such as Missouri’s frequent top-25 presence despite a lackluster resume—the discussion raised critical questions: If BYU drops a game to anyone besides Utah or Notre Dame, will its playoff dreams collapse, even with a two-loss runner-up finish? Unlike their SEC and Big Ten rivals, BYU may not get the benefit of the doubt, making each game a must-win for Kalani Sitake and his squad.

A key theme that emerged was BYU’s upcoming matchup with TCU and how current trends favor the Cougars. TCU’s inability to establish a run game, highlighted by a mere 33 rushing yards in their loss to UCF, sets the stage for BYU’s top-ranked ball-hawking defense, coordinated by Kelly Poppinga, to exploit Jaden Craig’s mistakes through the air. The discussion explored BYU’s path to capitalizing on TCU’s weaknesses, historical struggles in Fort Worth, and the chance to make a statement win that could influence the playoff narrative.

Several points were raised, including the Big 12’s unpredictable season—Cincinnati’s perfect start, Texas Tech’s alarming turnover issues, and Colorado’s dramatic mid-season setbacks under Coach Prime. The analysis extended to Utah and Arizona’s resilience, with both squads making their own cases for Big 12 contender status. As the playoff race heats up, listeners are left to ponder whether Keanu Tanuvasa and Bear Bachmeier can keep BYU’s undefeated run alive and break through the national perception barriers. Can the Cougars control their destiny, or will external factors steer the postseason conversation? Get the latest insights, power rankings, and critical matchups shaping BYU’s quest for college football glory.

Oklahoma State and West Virginia collide in Morgantown in what’s being called the game of the weekend for the Big 12, and the outcome may have ripple effects far beyond the standings. All eyes are on quarterbacks Mike Hawkins and Drew Mestemaker, who not only headline their respective teams but have vaulted themselves into the national conversation with standout starts that “ruin the graph” when it comes to Big 12 quarterback analytics. The hosts break down the stakes for both programs—Oklahoma State looking to reignite its preseason dark horse status with a marquee win following a rough opener against Tulsa, and West Virginia aiming to continue their undefeated streak and strengthen the Big 12’s chances for two College Football Playoff berths.

Jake Hatch, Cody Stovall, Derek Johnson, Parker Ainsworth, and Kevin Borba go beyond the field to debate which storyline—Oklahoma State’s improbable comeback or West Virginia’s unbeaten run—serves the conference best. Discussion heats up around the atmosphere in Milan Puskás Stadium, with “couches burning before kickoff” painting a vivid picture of the energy in Morgantown. The group also turns a sharp eye to turmoil in Boulder, with Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes spiraling after a bad loss, key players booted from the roster, and mounting off-field drama. Questions swirl about Coach Prime’s standing and whether the coaching hot seat is hotter in Boulder or for Baylor’s Dave Aranda, both of whom face pivotal matchups this weekend.

The analysis doesn’t stop at the headline clash. Kansas State’s legitimacy as a Big 12 dark horse is dissected, with the Wildcats’ dominant offensive line play and under-the-radar 3-0 start contrasting sharply with questions around a struggling Cincinnati. TCU’s trip to UCF, complicated by Alonza Barnett’s hamstring injury, plus Houston’s puzzling road game at Georgia Southern, round out the comprehensive preview. The hosts call out SEC bias in the AP poll, warning that national viewers may overlook two of the best quarterbacks in America due to lack of ranking pomp. As the Big 12 weekend looms, the central question remains: Will Oklahoma State’s dramatic redemption arc or West Virginia’s quest for perfection steal the narrative?

The College Football Playoff Committee’s new strength-of-conference schedule metric might derail the BYU football program’s postseason dreams. Are Kalani Sitake and his BYU Cougars fighting a losing battle as the CFP continues to shift its criteria, apparently favoring the SEC? Jake Hatch spotlights the power plays driving playoff selections and questions if BYU fans should brace for more heartbreak, or if a Big 12 Conference title run is the only answer to counter conference bias.

The episode opens with Jake Hatch breaking down ESPN’s reports on the CFP Committee’s adoption of a new conference opponent evaluation tool. This metric, born in response to SEC lobbying, allows the committee to compare a team’s conference strength-of-schedule in finer detail—potentially pushing Big 12 teams like BYU behind their SEC and Big Ten peers even with similar or better records. Jake Hatch argues this move isn’t just about fairness; it’s a response to SEC frustration over recent Big Ten national titles and their belief in the SEC being the best league. He calls out the committee’s history of shifting standards—like last season, when BYU’s Big 12 title game loss led to a drop in the rankings, while Alabama remained unaffected by a similar loss in the SEC Championship Game.

With the playoff field crowded and the possibility of the Big 12 becoming remaining a one-bid league, Jake Hatch places the onus firmly on BYU: win the Big 12 championship and remove all doubt. The episode explores why Notre Dame’s independence keeps them immune from this metric, spotlighting a system that effectively safeguards bluebloods while raising hurdles for outsiders like BYU.

Listeners can expect a rapid-fire mailbag tackling questions about TCU game confidence—Jake Hatch feels good about BYU’s chances at Amon G. Carter Stadium—and the development of BYU’s defensive line behind Keanu Tanuvasa and Tausili Akana. Is the defensive line finally taking that long-awaited step forward, or will they be exposed against tougher Big 12 competition? Health updates on Bear Bachmeier reassure fans, and a viral story about the Bachmeier family is set straight.

Hot topics include whether BYU needs a program-defining win over Notre Dame or Utah to truly alter national perception, insight into style points versus substance, and why offensive tweaks—like getting the tight ends more involved—could be difference-makers as conference play heats up. Jake Hatch also addresses the PCSA’s potential impact on BYU, the athlete’s voice in looming legislation, and the double standard BYU faces in national media.

Can the Cougars shatter the ceiling and force the CFP Committee’s hand, or will shifting criteria forever keep BYU out of college football’s elite?

BYU Cougars surge through the first three games, raising hopes for a memorable Big 12 run. Can Bear Bachmeier and LJ Martin keep the offense firing, and will injuries challenge BYU’s title chase down the stretch?

Host Jake Hatch leads a spirited roundtable on BYU’s offensive firepower, depth concerns, and the critical roles of Legend Glasker, Walker Lyons, and Cannon DeVries. The panel debates Kalani Sitake’s coaching decisions, the tight end unit’s untapped potential, and whether BYU has the resilience to weather Big 12 competition and marquee matchups against Notre Dame and Utah. With playoff implications on the horizon, can BYU’s defense and secondary, led by coaches like Lewis Walker, deliver when it matters most?
